Kaido’s popularity comes down to his arc being incomplete, we yet to have his history his flashback which will put him over its unfairto compare him to completed arc villains

It’s less that it’s unfair to judge him based on his lack of backstory specifically and more to do with the fact that we know that Kaido’s role in Wano is as of yet incomplete. Enel and Crocodile both served their roles as main antagonists and therefore we are able to judge them based on how well they played their role.
we know for a fact that Kaido's role in Wano is incomplete and we know that there is more depth to his character than we currently are aware of. its hard to judge Kaido because hes not a complete product yet.

@@almostunliketea also, I don’t think Enel or Crocodile are popular because they’re amazing characters. They’re popular because they’re cool in appearance and attitude, and Oda had them serve a wacky comedic role in future arcs or cover stories.

"He feels like a side character that just so happened to get the role of main antagonist" is a pretty good way to say what I think of him. It feels so weird to me, all of this set up in the 100 chapters of Wano so far and careful positioning of characters and what not is all done with the goal of taking out Kaido. So why even after this many chapters does he still feel like a blank slate? Despite the fact that he will obviously be given some back story some time in the future, I feel like that isn't a replacement for a good old shining personality. Doffy could be on screen for just a few panels and you can instantly decipher that he's a maniacale bastard that tries to create chaos, with Crocodilw you could instantly tell that he's a suave Bond esque villan that carefully plans each move, even Enel you get the sense that he believes he's a supreme being and is completely full of himself. With Kaido? Uhhh he's strong and evil I guess? Like every single villain in existence? Idk, I've been missing something from Kaido so far that was present in all of the great OP villains, but I do have hope that once he finally ascends from feeling like a side character to an actual main antagonist he'll get more time to show what he's all about.

For how incredible of an introduction his first appearance was, when you compare it to Big Mom's ...... You get that Kaido is really tough, lost a bunch of times and wants to die but can't whereas with Big Mom you can tell that she is some sort of candy obsessed maniac who also is a massive mob boss.
Then add their first appearance during their titular arcs, Kaido is getting drunk and transforms into a rampaging dragon and then ..... sobers whilst doing so ? There's a start of a characterization but that's pretty heh. Meanwhile Big Mom is having a grotesque version of a Disney Princess song surrounded by uncanny animals and objects with faces singing about how much she wants to eat the wedding cake and you see her subordinates acquiring the ingredients for said extravagant cake with absolutely no regards for human life by slaughtering countless people for them. It's extremely creepy and unsettling and really gives you the vibes of the character.
It's actually insane thinking about it that you have two yonko, yet one has been clearly established from her first proper introduction (and you could already gather her big unique factor ever since Fishman Island) whilst the other, even when you enter the final battle against him, feels like a placeholder character. There definitely was a huge imbalance in terms of characterization between the two to say the least

As someone who has been studying story telling for most of his life, I can promise you that Kaido is being written as an enigma for the sake of another story he takes part in which is either post-wano where strawhats have to take part in their final battle, or in a flashback. I absolutely love Hody as a villain and I will never stop repeating how much I love him. People blast his look because he's just this potbellied guy, but that was part of his whole idea. He was this 'normal' guy who inherited the racist will or Arlong (playing off of a major One Piece theme) and used whatever advantage he had, no matter how cheap or underhanded to achieve his goals. I loved that he kept failing and getting back up and failing and getting back up to try to beat Luffy, in the same way that Luffy is defeated multiple times through an arc, only this time Hody failed at the end, all the powerups, all the sacrifices to achieve his dream, and he failed. And people crap on him for being a weak villain, but he still managed to trap Luffy underwater and almost bit his head off, so that's...something.

I dont take fan polls seriously honestly. A lot of data is skewed due to a design's sex appeal and recency bias. Carrot is rated so high because of her recent appearances and her design (You know what I mean). The best villians in the series are the ones who were fleshed out and had an impact on more than just their arcs. Characters like Arlong, Doflamingo, Crocodile (even if I dont personally like him), Aokiji, and of course Akainu. These characters have been prevalent for so long and have changed the course of the series significantly. I think its very naive to try and rate Kaido's appeal and popularity prior to his backstory and inevitable showcase showdown with Luffy.

He isnt compelling and is still juvenile in terms of character building because we dont know why he wants those things. Doflamingo, for example, was already far more compelling with how he was portrayed throughout his arc before we even saw his backstory. I mean think about it, the backstory isn't supposed to be what makes the character interesting, but with Kaido it feels like we're just waiting for his backstory to find him more compelling which isn't how it's supposed to work. I’m going to disagree about Caesar, yeah he poses no direct physical threat to Luffy, but I actually find him more sinister and intimidating then most villains in OP. He’s an expert in WMD’s who’s utterly insane and has no moral restraints, plus the backing of some of the most powerful figures in the world. He doesn’t need to be a threat through physical power, which also makes him a refreshing change of pace compared to other OP villains. He’s lowkey one of the best antagonists in the series and a core reason I consider Punk Hazard the most underrated arc in One Piece.

Kaido had a really cool introduction when he had the narrator explaining how he was captured and executed so many times and then we see him jump off a cloud right in front of Kid, Apoo and Hawkins. I still wonder if he tried to kill himself while also being fully aware that he was gonna smash their party.
It just looked so random at the time, only later when we found out Apoo was already on his side did we know that Kaido had every possibility to know exactly where their party was and that kinda made this moment pretty lame in retrospect.
I preferred the idea of Kaido just doing whatever he wants on a whim. That he gets drunk and tries to kill himself on a regular basis demolishing everything in his path.
The Kaido we have now tho is very calm and collected, plans decades ahead before doing anything and is very stoic. He's not living to my expectations so far.

I don't know how to take that line that he envies Edward. I think WB proved to us who the most stubborn and erratic Yonko is during the paramount war.

You're wildly underselling Kaido's motivations. He's clearly got some sort of interest in the history and prophecies of the world ("You couldn't be Joyboy, either") as well as an obsession with death and legacy ("Whitebeard did it right"/"Accept your death as a true warrior"). Throw in his opinions on people and their beliefs ("Without proof, they will just keep believing you could win"/"The problem with defeat is, so few people can accept it when it arrives") and you've got some fascinating deeper reason for his motivation to start a new era of war that's going to be explored even more still in the story.

From what I've seen, ppl actually love Kaido's design and it actually does make sense that he wouldn't be that popular yet seeing as he isn't properly fleshed out. Pretty much any time any form of critical One Piece opinion is brought up this happens. People get extremely offended because they disagree. I'm cool with opinions, though I'll say a lot of times (with this comment section too) people will hear an opinion like this that's supported with evidence and then respond to it just by saying they disagree and not backing that statement up with any evidence of their own. It's kind of hard for me to see different perspectives when so much discourse isn't suported by any evidence.

    • @themecoptera9258
      @themecoptera9258 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Cheesehead302 as useful as evidence can be to discussion of objective information it’s impossible to provide evidence for subjective things. If I were to say “I like Kaido” the only evidence I’d be able to put forward is my own word.
What is a good character? What is a good antagonist? What makes a good Yonko in the story?
Well that is going to be deeply personal, someone might think Kaido is a good character because they like his design, think dragons are cool, and like Yamato. Heck someone could subjectively like Kaido better than katakuri or doffy and they wouldn’t be wrong. They also wouldn’t have any way to back up their opinion with evidence.
Further the methodology used here is deeply flawed, a character not being the favorite of many people doesn’t mean much when you consider that most people voted for straw hats. It’s totally possible that Kaido would do much better if the poll was everyone’s favorite villain, or everyone’s favorite Yonko.
Further a good villain can be wildly unpopular while still being fundamentally good as a character. Indeed, making villains unlikeable is often the point and I’d say a character like Moria is a good villain in part because he isn’t likable.
So if the question is: is Kaido a disappointment?
The answer is going to depend on what you individually wanted from him as a villain. For some the answer will be no, for others yes.
Personally I’m on the fence about him, he has great potential in my opinion to be that ultimate wall which must be overcome in order for the straw hats to go from plucky underdogs to contenders on the world stage. In my opinion as long as he delivers on that front I don’t care if he’s a particularly sympathetic character, I’ll see him as a worthy addition to the story.

The only thing we don't know is his time at Rocks, and that's not going to do anything but develop a character that serves no current purpose for the plot at the moment (Xuebec/Quebec, I can't remember his name).

Unlike a lot of the antagonists Kaido really seems to be an incidental factor in the history of the location of the arc.
Katakuri is the reliable older brother and 2nd in command figure in an arc about messed up families. Doflamingo comes from a line of Kings who abandoned and reclaimed Dressrosa. Hody grew up in Fishman Island and learned his predjudice from his community and turned it up to 11. Kaido just sort of showed up in Wano for... some reason? Like I assume it will be a good reason but like we havent even seen the point in the story where he arrived in Wano yet.. it feels like Oda is putting the grander mystery of Rocks and "Joboy" before the pacing of the arc he's currently writing. It also doesnt help that Big Mom and Orochi have demonstrated more compelling motivations than simply "being fated to be there".

I feel like Rocks and Joyboy could be deeply intertwined with Kaido’s motivation and why he’s done/doing the things he’s doing (for example, we know Wano is significant to the return of joyboy, but we don’t know why), but Oda wants to keep it a secret until later in the arc, and I think that when we do find out, we’ll also get Kaido’s motivation revealed and it’ll make more sense to us. A flashback is the perfect tool for conveying that if you ask me

The other thing that's just so weird about Kaido beyond his boring personality is that he strangely almost goes against the rules of what makes an intimidating antagonist, and I don't mean from a technical power scaling perspective. On the one hand, he was built up as unbeatable in a 1 vs 1, but at the same time it was mention that he's been capturing multiple times before which already feels odd. Why have such an intimaditing sounding premise like that be followed up with the fact that he's already lost multiple times? In One Piece and basically any story, you want an antagonist that feels like a threat. Highlighting their defeats is a bad way to do that. Which brings me to the next piece of evidence, it feels so weird and unthreatening to me that in this arc we have literally seen Kaido essentially defeated by Oden. Sure, on one hand it makes the reader see Oden as even more of a legendary character, but on the otherhand it makes Kaido feel like a much a less legendary character. Someone that's supposed to be an unstoppable force until the protag barely is able to pull through by the skin of their teeth shouldn't be shown being defeated previously, it just makes the victory feel expected and the antagonist feel unintimidating. From a narrative perspective b Crocodile and Dofflamingo are much more intimidating based soley on their stage presence and actions. Kaido feels like a background character.

You brought up Thanos and let's not forget, previous to End Game nobody felt anything about Thanos. He was just a big bad guy hiding in the shadows. But then we get one movie and this completely changed. And this is by design.
This is similar to Kaido. So far he is supposed to be this "force of nature". I think, Oda actually doesn't want to give him many details, so that he stays a "force" and doesn't become human too fast. As soon as Kaido will be put into the ropes by Luffy, his facade will crack (properly through a flashback) and Kaido will become much more human.

I feel like Kaido should have had a motivation. Remember when he was introduced? He was specifically introduced as a suicidal person who wanted a place to die. But because of how strong he is, he just couldn't no matter what he does.
That is a really interesting motivation that he does still have. It's just that it's not shown enough in Wano. There are things that hint at it here & there every now & then, and maybe the reason why he wants to bring war to the world or have taken over Wano is specifically so that he could find someone who can take him down. But his motivation is just not showcased enough to know for sure.

(No manga spoiler) i think kaido is flawed, bc at first he was this invincible beast who people legit thought was stronger than whitebeard IN HIS BASE FORM especially when he was first introduced jumping off a island, and then he has dragon form too which just made him even crazier. (The anime kinda spoiled it but yeah)
Then he started having issues like being a crybaby when hes drunk, and him hitting oden knowing he was distracted like a coward which totally goes against his character as the man who tried killing himself. I think it couldve been fixed if the clone girl was behind kaido, at least then it would be logical but he literally turned and ran towards the clone girl and kaido still hit him. After this fight it made it very clear that kaido wasnt strong at all and in a one on one he couldnt even beat oden WITH the addition of the dragon form, let alone the great whitebeard. I was hoping kaido and whitebeard would be rivals who were both beasts in their respective ways but kaido was only a apprentice. Honestly if kaido was a evil whitebeard strength antagonist it would be interesting as we already fought with whitebeard and now against one of his former crewmate rivals whos evil

I would say even Imu Sama didn't have an introduction that good because it lacked anything from the person, but Kaido had this sort of thing which immediately brings out your empathy and makes you interested in him immediately.
So yeah, maybe Kaido will have the greatest backstory of the villian currently, I can see the potential. But I would say that it will be hard to compete against the masterpiece of the Joker Donquxite Doflamingo

The two things i feel make a great villain are being memorable and being a genuine threat.
For example, Dr Eggman is a hammy, over the top, comical buffoon who steals the scene but has also built massive robot armies, sky fleets, a giant space station multiple times, unleashed eldritch beings to wreck havoc, almost/has destroyed large parts of the world, etc.

  • @CadeDubsOG

Kaido is an embodiment of threat: while not pure evil, he still represents an unpassable obstacle that cannot seemingly be overcome. As a character he may not be that deep but his presence alone creates a danger, so he's impressive that way. Doflamingo also had that aura but his other characteristics were what made him so memorable, so compared to him Kaido feels a little one-dimentional - that's probably the reason why fans seem to "forget" Kaido. Let's just wait for his flashback.

I think Kaido has a hard time gaining popularity is, because we have so many great characters in this wano arc.
We we're introduced to so many different unique characters like Killer, Oden and Yamato.
Also, like mentioned in this video, we nearly don't know ANYTHING about Kaido.
Concluding, I think that Kaido will gain popularity very fast once his complete story been told. When looking back once Wano is over, I think he will surpass Dofi and Katakuri (Even if I think, that this will be impossible. But as we know, Oda will do his job anyways.)
