Aw, I'm so sorry! ❤️ Will you get another EM one day? My two Newfoundlands are almost 11 years old and near the end, especially my brown. So hard to lose these big oafs. 😭 We're strongly considering a English Mastiff one day.

My oldest Mastiff was a unusually large female who lived to be 15. Very close to 16. She flipped her stomach at age 12 and had emergency surgery on Christmas morning. They tried to talk us out of the surgery because she had already outlived the average age and the surgery would be around 9000 dollars with the hospitalization. We went for the surgery and she lived another almost 4 years healthy and happy until she had a debilitating stroke and we had to put her down. Mastiffs and Dalmatians are my favorite breeds. Lazy and hyper. Lol. I always have at least 1 Mastiff and a least 1 Dalmatian.

"What the lion is to the cat, the Mastiff is to the dog, the noblest of the family; he stands alone, and all others sink before him. His courage does not exceed his temper and generosity, and in attachment he equals the kindest of his race." Sydenham Edwards, in 1800.

I live with a two year old English Mastiff, shes about 150lbs and she is the biggest baby ever. Very sweet, just wants to be with people and can be very sensitive, meaning if you tell her No, she'll literally pout for ten minutes haha. This breed is not for everyone, they're very strong and will knock you over in a burst of energy if you cant get out of the way lol. Also, the drool.. so much drool! We have face towels stationed in every part of the house to wipe the drool away and it still manages to get all over my pants! And of course, with a big dog comes big vet bills, plus the cost of food. A 30lb bag of dog food will last maybe two weeks. All in all, sweet breed, but make sure to do your research before getting one.

I am looking for an English Mastiff it’s very hard to find a well known and qualified breeder. I live in Colorado and me and my husband do not mind making a commute to get the dog or should I say new furry family member. Please if anyone knows of any reputable breeders such as the man in this video please let me know we are looking high and low but want to make sure we purchase from a good breeder who knows what they are doing and who loves the dogs they are selling. I would love to purchase our new family member from him specifically though 😃

I had the privilege of owning a mastiff. They are wonderful dogs. Understand though that they are more fragile than they look. You don't want to play fetch or go running with them because it puts a lot of stress on their joints. They actually don't eat that much but their poop is easily as large as a human's. If left alone and bored, they can literally destroy your house(think Turner and Hooch). If you want a dog that doesn't need high energy activities, lays around and farts, drools and snores and is utterly loyal, then a mastiff is for you. I won't even consider owning another breed.

Sacha Gerrish the way you describe a mastiff is the same as describing me lol. They are great dogs i plan to own one soon them and GSD are my top favorites both great with kids, loyal and protective. But GSD need to much work for me I’m a couch potato so a mastiff is right up my alley.

    • @MsMorganThorne
      @MsMorganThorne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Oh the farts! Some days my Mastiff nearly knocks me over with the smell! We've had to buy jumbo poop bags because it would take 3 of the regular size ones to pick up one poop - and he goes a few times a day.
I would add to the bored Mastiff warning that they will also destroy most dog toys. I buy the black, heavy duty Kong toys and Nylabones, as well as the huge smoked beef bones (which he breaks open in about 5 min) because anything else is shredded in minutes.

I love mastiffs with all my heart. I have a English mastiff and he’s my big teddy bear. Literally. He cuddles with me on the couch all day and sleeps by me sometimes on me at night ( of course he’s so big and he knows it so if he lays on me it’s usually just his upper body laying across my feet. He is my baby he follows my every move which took a while for me to get used to lol. I rescued him at age 4 his owner died so I think he was worried I was going to go away and not comeback. He sheds a lot!!! Slobber isn’t horrible. Makes a mess with his water. He loves food. He cries at dinner if at the end he doesn’t get something. He’s so friendly so protective. He does this funny thing where every time he goes outside he scans the yard for a while until he goes potty. Rarely barks. Only heard him growl a couple times. And that was something outside the window. He loves loves loves to swim! Which surprised me. We took him to the lake and he jumped in and belly crawled lol. His favorite day is shopping day. He goes through every ba to find his bone I always get him. Then he talks at me until I open it. Yes talks. It’s like a grumble really. But they need those big massive bones. I got him a medium one at first and he breaks through it in less than 10 minutes. He’s funny, He is goofy, he plays well with my other dogs he protects my child like nobody’s business. The mastiff is truly a phenomenal majestic mastiff lol. And he loves kisses. But he knows I don’t like licks so I just kiss his chubby cheeks and his tail goes nuts lol. But yes some people will avoid you if you take a walk. It’s sad but it’s true. They are too afraid to even ask if he’s friendly.

Our English Mastiff is 11 years & 4 months old. He has an amazing pedigree. He's also the biggest baby, and most gentle giant ever. He's only had one surgery for a large benign tumor on his hind leg a couple of years ago. He still loves to play ball for just a few minutes. He is reaching his end I'm sure, he's losing weight rapidly the past couple of months, no know reason except old age. 😭😭 They are the best of the best! I just lost my 12 1/2 year old Mastiff Widget to stomach cancer.
    👇
She was a pure bred, English Mastiff. She was the runt of the litter and only weighed 115 lbs, fully grown.
She was thrown into the trash for being the runt by her breeders. She survived after four hours in the trash, without adequate oxygen.
She was brilliant. But she was hyperactive and truly did have ADHD as a result.
She needed to be walked at least 6 days a week for 2 to five miles until she was 6 because of this.
She was not aggressive. But because of the hyperactivity, she was destructive at home.
She would be a perfect lady and travel companion in public. But at home, she was like Dino from The Flintstones: a total spaz with no control.
I found on accident that she suffered ADHD from the toss in the trashcan.
She was given fluoxetine and Pet Smart training. She improved steadily in a few months, and worked her tail off.
She was one of the two stars of her class. People watched from the sidelines, amazed. At that point, she was 100 lbs.
She learned how to high five in Pet Smart at age 2. As a pup, she learned shake and sit at 4 months. Then I would take her paw and say, ENCHANTE and kiss it. Then she'd kidd my hand.
So after she learned high fives, she would reach out and communicate with her paws and front arms.
Shortly after we started her meds and training, someone taught her how to go on a slide as a joke. There was a set of three: a short slide you crawl through a tunnel to land, a long slide covered in a tube, and a big curly q slide. Within a month, she could go on all of them herself.
As a result of that and her incredible personality, people loved her, and she brought them together.
She was able to go on the slides until our vetvretired her at age 6 1/2 when the first signs of hip dysplasia appeared. She was able to leap on top of a car until age 9.
Another trick I taught her was how to mimicki Miley Cyrus. Widget would stand upright and lean on things. Miley was pole dancing on Nick at Nite. So I would say MILEY CYRUS and Widget would stand on a pole or where I told her to. She was able to do that until age 9.
She thrived on travel and was a great companion. She loved car rides, take out, and motels.
She was also a great watchdog. I miss her and her hugs. Her favorite song was How Much Is That Doggie In The IWindow.

I lived next door to a family who owned a 280lb + EM, the first thing they did when they moved in was put up a very strong 12ft fence around their back garden. Barney (the dog) was friendly, but aloof with non-family. Every so often Barney would get out and prance around the street for a few minutes until his owner called him back, his bark was phenomenal and I guarantee combined with his size no one was going to hang around to see if he was a pussy or not. He was the perfect guard dog, big enough, noisy enough and fearless enough to scare off any would be burglar or attacker, but unlikely to rip them to pieces avoiding lawsuits etc.

Although they are docile, English mastiffs are awesome guard dogs. They will die protecting their family.

This person seems such a passionate breeder and it looks like he really cares about his dogs (there are some breeders that breed dogs just to sell and profit from them)

My family raised and showed English Mastiffs. Our first was from the Olsen kennel in Canaan Ct. She was instrumental in bringing the bread back.
Woothypush Frachna of Zimmapan. Our female was direct from England. We bread those and had champion show dogs. Our next was from Mrs. Brill from Delaware. She acquired Mrs.Olsens kennel. First 2 , Male, Silver fawn, Female, apricot. Brill male a beautiful brindle. Fantastic breed and I enjoyed this video. Thanks for posting.

I have a Mystery Mountain dog who is son of Rocco and Princess Warrior. He is 11 1/2 yrs old now.
He moved this summer from California to Utah and he loves the snow. I'm sure he is going to make it to 13 or maybe 15 because we cook for him.
He is tough as they come for that and has small poops because no filler. He eats meat, veg, rice or potatoes of all sorts. This year he ate a lot of zucchini from the garden w/tomato pasta.
btw he is a closed mouth Mastiff and does not drool, only drips when he wants some of your food.
    Great dog

I own a 190 lb English Mastiff named Kittany, and I think he is the best behaved and smartest dog I have ever owned, we taught him to go to his bed when we say go lay down, this is the command we use most often with him.

I truly enjoyed watching this Dogumentary, his babies are beautiful and theirs nothing but love. I had 2 Fila Sisters from the same litter, key lived to be 11 years old, they were the joy in my life. The 2 sisters I have now, are 14 month old English and they are extremely smart with funny personalities. Mastiffs are awesome dogs, although all dogs are beautiful, these are the best.

Get a rescue female EM. It was daunting at first because she wasn't used to her new surroundings, but once we got past that, she's good.

Everything said in this video is true. I have Mastiffs 3,4 and 5 right now and they're marvelous. Easy to care for. Zero liability as they don't do anything untoward. They alert, they'll bark at strangers but they don't want to harm anyone.

We got a bullmastiff after our house was broken into. We love dogs but we wanted a dog that looked intimidating. We haven’t been broken into since we got our boy nearly 5 years ago, but it’s funny because he is the friendliest, laziest “guard dog” you’ll ever meet. I worry that if we actually had another intruder our dog wouldn’t even get off his bed to see whose there. Love my boy so much.
