My daughter and her ex got an English Mastiff in 2012, about a month before my grandson was born. They were raised together. Annabelle was such a gentle giant - more like a rug than a dog. She was an anomaly in that she had long hair, even tho she was a purebred. She just passed away at the age of 10.5 a couple of weeks ago. We all miss her. She weighed about 125 and I thought that was huge. I can't imagine 200 lbs!

We had several mastiffs on my parent's acreage. One dog named Sugar was born out there and also had a non-standard coat. Her's wasn't full-body though, it was mostly just shaggy around her shoulders and made her look like a fancy lady wearing a fur shawl XD Also had a non-standard muddy mask, and about half of her toes were non-standard white, and her ears were bigger than normal, but the fact that she didn't get picked for a new home like her littermates meant that we got to keep Sugar for a wonderful (non-standard) 13 years ^^ One of the best childhood dogs
It is wonderful that you are willing to put the pet first and their comfort. I have not seen many groomers do this. What a fantastic dog! Thank you for always showing the best treatment of the animals.
He is just the most handsome potato. I love and appreciate how supportive you are to accommodate his comfort. As a rather large man myself, I rarely get the kind of understanding you've shown Winston. ❤
One of my cats regularly watches your videos with me. Some he eventually falls asleep to, but he *really* loves this one. No idea why, but he even stretched out and showed his tummy to the TV! He was particularly fascinated when you got to washing his butt! 😁
I did research for a few years to find a dog that fit my lifestyle, when I was four months pregnant I got an English Mastiff puppy. Hand's Down The BEST Decision I've ever made. She was soooo motherly, she tried to Mommy everything!!! She was absolutely amazing to have with my two boys she lived to be Almost 15 years old!! Which is pretty crazy for these guys, they usually only live 9 to 10 years. I didn't let her get super heavy (to try to spare her joints) and when she was growing I made sure she didn't eat too much and put a bunch of weight on growing joints. I think that gave her hips a few more years. Truly an awesome breed, amazing family dogs!! Just have a good towel handy!!! 🤤😂🤤
Please keep spreading the word of keeping this breed trim! I have an English mastiff and he is just coming out of teenagerhood (he just made 18 months) and he gets 6 cups of high quality food a day and frozen vegetables and blueberries for treats. People want them to be big, but it really is hard on their bodies. Love your story about your sweet girl!

My dad owned an Italian Mastiff for about eight years, she sadly passed about three years ago, but her name was Candy Cane because of how sweet and gentle she was. On her back legs, she stood about 6 feet tall. Almost all of the mastiffs that I've met have been gentle giants, love mastiffs as a whole and love Winston
What really makes me laugh at this is the knowledge that if he ever decided he truly didn’t want to move one of those times you try to move him, there would be nothing you could do. 😂 All things considered he was insanely cooperative.
9:55 For instance here, we have a clear example of this per pound vote democracy, where this dog has a clear supermajority in the Congress of We’re Doing It My Way. 😂
I mean you are correct! Every time he moves for us we let out an audible sigh of relief because he could so decide one day he doesn’t want to move again 😂
OMG such a sweet giant! I bet you are EXHAUSTED after a groom like this. Him too! Thank you so much for being so intuitive and knowing a dog of that size can't stand for too long. I've learned a lot about giant dogs from my brother. His Bouvier, Zeus, recently passed and he also has Hans who's a Mastiff mix and just looks like a giant hound dog lol. He's also the biggest lap dog ever. He's big and has a loud bark but he loves people and kids. You're positive reinforcement technique is on point lol.
I was exhausted watching the video! I felt so bad 😩😩😩 but yes, she is so good at knowing exactly what the breed needs. I also can’t imagine having to stand at my hairdressers while getting my hair dried with my thick hair let’s be real. I can only imagine for dogs 😂😂😂. And I brush him exactly like that at home, he just naps while I do it! So sorry to hear about Zeus 🥺 but Hans sounds like he would get along with Winston real well!
Your struggle to clip the leash in a different spot had me laughing. I had a 120 pound red-nose pitbull years ago and I remember my struggles to maneuver him around at bath time. 😁
I knew a family with one of these beasts. We were leaving the neighborhood and saw three of the kids standing around the prone dog. They thought they were going to take him for a ‘walk’. 3 blocks in and he just laid down. No more walk. We asked if we could help get him home. They told us the only car he would get into was their dads truck. He was coming home to help. Meanwhile they couldn’t just leave him there. We brought them some drinks
I never thought I'd find myself watching a video of a dog being groomed but here I am. And I'm grateful to youtube for suggesting it. Winston is such a good boy 😊
Some animals have the sweetest, gentlest expressions. Winston is one of them. I laughed so hard when you told him he was a horse. Exactly right! At least horses don't tend to sit down, LOL. His coat looks like that of a plush toy, and he's a wonderful shade of color.
In uni I used to go to riding lessons and one of the girls in my group would ride a pony called Storm, whose first reaction when he saw someone coming to make him work is to lie down on his side in the stall and refuse to get up lol. A few times my friend would tack him up lying down and only then would he get up. Animals can be so stubborn sometimes 😂
Can totally relate having owned four mastiffs over the years. Finally made a covered outdoor wash stall with hot and cold running water just like a horse wash stall! Mastiffs are like potato chips...you can't have just one. 🐶😆💖
I didn’t know that diet played a roll in ear infections! That explains why, when I left my canine charge with her permanent person, she had an ear infection when I picked her up. The other dogs didn’t, but the food was different. Really good, healthy food, but different. Her regular diet coupled with diligently cleaning with olive oil cleared it up in a few days. I learn so much from watching your channel, thank you!
Winston is WONDERFUL 😇.....I rescued what the vet thought was a Lab/Mastiff mix years ago and he was literally the sweetest gentle giant. RIP Dudly, we miss you. ❤
The way Winston moved his body and the way Vanessa groomed him on the floor reminded me of the Mahauts bathing the elephants in the river. So calm and relaxed, loved to watch him!
It is always a pleasure to see you work with a beautiful, sweet, well mannered dog! It was refreshing to see you work in calm comfort, instead of on high alert, poised to avoid injury.
PSA for ear infections. Diet does play a huge role, just like Vanessa mentioned, but you can also use this product called Zymox that's available over the counter. The vet I used to work for was a rural livestock vet, so he had to have a cheap(ish), convenient solution for farmers and ranchers to treat their dog's ears, so he just stocked this stuff and handed it out. Always talk to your vet first and don't use it on perforated eardrums, but if your dog just has yeasty, itchy ears, Zymox with hydrocortisone is amazing.
Mastiffs are incredibly food motivated! It often places before even sleep and recieving pets, which they adore. For food, a mastiff will do almost anything it can think of, save let someone they deem as a threat approach someone they care about. THEN the instincts override and they start growling and barking so deep and loud that it reverberates throughout the landscape. They are sweety-pies though. Even if theyre scaredy-cats, they'll put that aside to ward off danger from their family.
I admire your ingenuity finding ways to get Winston to cooperate with groom. What a sweet dog! I understand that Mastiffs were bred as guard dogs who could 'fill a manor house doorway'. Nice video
Love hearing you from tell him to sit lay stay. He’s like “I’m a Mastiff I don’t need any encouragement to lay down & stay.” It’s like that’s my life “laying & staying”.
You are such an amazing groomer! Your love for every animal that comes into your shop is from your heart. I love watching your videos ❤ Hope you never change❤❤❤
Funny story... my current mastiff came to me at a year old. His former name was Winston. His name was changed to Baldur when he came to live with us. (Most people hear it as Boulder. LOL!) He tips the scales at a whopping 240lbs and is similarly unimpressed with bath time. Additional irony...I am a groomer and JUST gave him a bath last weekend. 😂🤣
Had an English Mastiff. He was a rescue and only weighed 143 to 150 lbs. Yes drool was an issue. Cleaned the walls was always fun. You have not lived until you empty that water bowl either. Standing and waiting for it to go plop while you hold the bowl upside down. Super sweet old guy and so gentle. We all miss that old man. But maybe no t the drool.
watching him get his ears cleaned and the absolute bliss on his face and how good it must have felt.... that was great, I'm really glad you could bring relief like that to him😌
We bathe dogs at the daycare I work at, and there is no greatest workout than trying to keep these dogs standing when bathing or drying them. My back always kills me afterwards. Major props to you for doing this for a living!
I’ve watched so many dog groomers on TH-cam who seem to only wash them in order to make money… there doesn’t seem to be that connection or love and passion for their work. You on the other hand, you seem to genuinely care about each and every animal you work on. That’s why I love and look forward to watching your videos! You’re amazing 💗
What I find helpful with sour neck areas that stay wet from drooling....I mix my shampoo with baking soda and smother area to soak while I bathe rest of body then finish with neck. It really helps freshen better than shampoo alone. This bath made me smile. So much fun to watch someone else do all that work.
I was an EMT and a vet tech. I've had all manner of bodily fluids from human and animal on me, from urine to blood to brain matter. Still, the ONLY one that gets to me and makes me both cringe and gag, is saliva/drool. Doesn't matter if it's from a human, dog, cat whatever. Winston you're a beautiful boy, but it was a struggle to get through this video lol
Haha as a tech I feel that in my soul. For me it isn’t drool/saliva, it’s ticks. I’ll trade you ANYTHING if I don’t have to deal with ticks. Parvo pup? Done. Infected necrotic tumor? Done. Degloving injury? Done. Anything but ticks. 😂😂
@@ethnedragon8287 for me it’s just ticks. Fleas and maggot infested wounds are fine. But ticks give me the major heebie jeebies 😂 as far as the revenge thing goes, I totally feel you on that. @@RryhhbfrHhgdHhgd356 my previous landlord has a dog (not sure what breed, maybe a great dane/mastiff?) that is drooly beyond anything I've ever met in my life. he's nearly waist high but his drool can create solid strings from his mouth to the floor. my old landlord and landlady would keep a BEACH TOWEL in each room to wipe his mouth off with regularly. I loved Caesar!! 😍
I love his expression of confused surprise when he sees you trying to move him 😂
He said “whoa this tiny woman is STRONG!”
"Wow, that looks really difficult."
Oh my goodness this is the sweetest story. I can’t wait to see my Winston grow up with my human babies, but I can’t bear the thought of losing him one day and having to watch my babies mourn their big brother. Kills me inside. So sorry for your loss 😔, Annabelle will be waiting for everyone on the other side I’m sure!
We had several mastiffs on my parent's acreage. One dog named Sugar was born out there and also had a non-standard coat. Her's wasn't full-body though, it was mostly just shaggy around her shoulders and made her look like a fancy lady wearing a fur shawl XD Also had a non-standard muddy mask, and about half of her toes were non-standard white, and her ears were bigger than normal, but the fact that she didn't get picked for a new home like her littermates meant that we got to keep Sugar for a wonderful (non-standard) 13 years ^^
One of the best childhood dogs
Aww, Winston's so cute. Also, oh wow, 200 pounds! Just imagine taking him for a walk on a leash, and he sees a squirrel and decides to chase it 😂
I know I am dating myself....if that was me...I. Would take off like the flying nun.😆
I’ve seen that happen with a 45 pound dog…
Hmm..nnn..ope! Drool is not cute! ☺️
Mostly the squirrel would be noticed, then ignored ,as too much trouble!
@@hollydrucker6360 I was thinking of Turner and Hooch when I thought about Winston taking off on me, but I do remember the flying nun show.
It is wonderful that you are willing to put the pet first and their comfort. I have not seen many groomers do this. What a fantastic dog! Thank you for always showing the best treatment of the animals.
My Bentley (American Bulldog) passed away yesterday. The loss is excruciating. Your channel and this video of Winston came at the perfect time ❤
Condolences on your sad loss. Bentley was clearly much loved and had a wonderful life 🙏 🐕
How are you doing darling? I hope it’s a little easier for you?
I'm so sorry😢
My condolences ❤
I just saw this. I know you posted this 7 months ago but Winston is sending you a very warm stinky drooly hug. I’m so sorry.
He is just the most handsome potato. I love and appreciate how supportive you are to accommodate his comfort. As a rather large man myself, I rarely get the kind of understanding you've shown Winston. ❤
"SHOOT. ...And that's conditioner not shampoo." 🤣🤣
I adore jumbo doggos.
One of my cats regularly watches your videos with me. Some he eventually falls asleep to, but he *really* loves this one. No idea why, but he even stretched out and showed his tummy to the TV! He was particularly fascinated when you got to washing his butt! 😁
Winston must have the best owners. He is so well trained and that's essential for a massive dog. Grooming him looks like a lot of fun.
Guess they forgot not to feed him soo much
@@512460 200lbs is a pretty common weight for a large male English mastiff
Oh poor babyyyyy even with all that ear infection, he was so sweet and affectionate !
He is the most patient 🥹
The care you have for these dogs is amazing. You don't rush which is great.
@@rskye11 agreed!!! Winston’s littermates are like 25-30 pounds heavier than him, some of the females too 😬 I can’t even imagine!! Lately he’s actually lost some weight so we’re pretty proud of that!
Oh my gosh hello friend! I got Winston and then got pregnant a month later. How was your pregnancy experience with a mastiff puppy? Because mine was horrible!!! But I will take all your tips so my daughter (and son who is on his way to being born) can spend as much time with Winston as possible!
@@theemanfamily
Congrats to you all on that weight loss! It's isn't easy denying them when they look at you with those sweet, sad eyes.
Every time mine goes to "Grandma's house" he comes back a little bit chunkier because he was "acting so hungry, I just HAD to give him some Milkbones." lol.
@@rskye11 oh my gosh, why do doggy grandparents do this!! I always have to be clear when Winston is on a diet 😂 but they feel bad because he “looks like he’s starving” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Winston should’ve been named ‘Gigantor’😃 He’s such a patient and sweet dog, which he can afford to be given his size🥰🥰
He is the gentlest manatee I’ve ever met 🥹
I would have named him Peanut, Tiny or Binky...
Hagrid
Now that you stuck that theme song in my head. Yes, I am that old. Here you go th-cam.com/video/NqGLyOd_nnA/w-d-xo.html
He has an expression that just makes you want to hug him. Like he’s just the sweetest cuddliest boy and you can tell how lovey he is.
Love him.
My dad owned an Italian Mastiff for about eight years, she sadly passed about three years ago, but her name was Candy Cane because of how sweet and gentle she was. On her back legs, she stood about 6 feet tall. Almost all of the mastiffs that I've met have been gentle giants, love mastiffs as a whole and love Winston
six feet!!!
A Cane Corso? Very cool
A Cane Corso named Candy Cane? Marvellous!!!
@@soliloquy3478I’m wondering if he meant that the dog was 6’ while standing up on it’s back legs
@@cathybrown4102I think so yes. Still impressive!
Winston laying there while you struggle to move his watermelon head to get to his massive paw was my favorite part
Who needs a gym when Winston comes in for a bath? Bathing this delightful walrus was a week’s worth of workouts!
It's so funny how Winston rules the roost just by sitting. That is one well Mannered dog.
Fact! Thank you very much 🥹
Your struggle to clip the leash in a different spot had me laughing.
😂😂😂
How kind to make sure everyone was hydrated! ❤
@@aesaphyr Bwahahahaha! Ponies especially are clowns. 😁 Storm was one clever pony!
Fantastic how she keeps him calm throughout. Brilliant to watch a real expert at work. What a good dog, so placid.
His reaction to the ear cleaning was really adorable ❤ what a sweet guy!
Thank you 🥹
What a wonderful dog! And you are so sensitive to his needs. ❤
She really is 🥺🥺🥺 the sweetest!!!
Such a big boy for two years old. He’s so cute and probably a little fluffy too.
He is a bit fluffy, about 25# fluffy. But a good boy.
Can totally relate having owned four mastiffs over the years. Finally made a covered outdoor wash stall with hot and cold running water just like a horse wash stall! Mastiffs are like potato chips...you can't have just one. 🐶😆💖
страшно представить сколько места занимает их еда..(и каких денег стоит)
That dog has MASTERED the art of passive resistance!
😂😂😂😂 he should write a book about it honestly
The way Winston moved his body and the way Vanessa groomed him on the floor reminded me of the Mahauts bathing the elephants in the river. So calm and relaxed, loved to watch him!
Winston was absolutely amazing! Such a tolerant, gentle walrus! 🥰
I could imagine and believe an actual walrus is bigger and much heavier than an English Mastiff.
9:40 That "I'm staying here because I want to and not because you asked me to" look hahahahahaha love this video
This a hoot and fun watching Winston be groomed, your just so great with these big dogs there really comfortable with you, it's a lot of work
Winston is such a good boy he was just going with the flow not a care in the world except treats 😂 lovely birthday gift to watch this 🥂

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag and gefeliciteerd from Germany / Netherlands ;)
It is always a pleasure to see you work with a beautiful, sweet, well mannered dog! It was refreshing to see you work in calm comfort, instead of on high alert, poised to avoid injury.
Definitely less anxiety and worry for the viewers. Except as his owner I was definitely worried about Vanessa’s back 😩
PSA for ear infections.
We’re currently using Zymox right now! Thank you for spreading the word!! But we have also consulted his vet 😊😊
Kept thinking of that line from Jaws, "We're gonna need a bigger shower stall." What a chunk! He's adorable. Great job, Vannessa!🏆
Winston was hoping the clippers were edible 😂
He truly is me, as a dog.
What a darling 💖
Nice video
12:39 Vanessa, letting him sniff the clippers: "Are you trying to eat it??"
Winston: "Well, you SAID I was getting a treat!"
My uncle owned a mastiff just like this named Sid when I was a kid! I think dogs this big are so gentle cuz they have absolutely nothing to prove ❤️
Exactly.. stranger take one look.. and run for their lives . When the owner chuckles.. lolol😂
That's a big fella. He looks so sweet. Like a big teddy bear. Just want to hug him.
😍😍😍
The drool string over his nose at the end 😂
big friendly giant really suits Winston! he’s so lovely, and when you were cleaning out his ears, adorable!!
We feel so bad for giving her an infected ear to clean 😩😩😩 she did an amazing job!
"You are one hairy beast" 🤣🤣🤣 Winston is so handsome
You’re completely dwarfed next to him 😂😂😂😂😂 he is such a good boy!
Love hearing you from tell him to sit lay stay. He’s like “I’m a Mastiff I don’t need any encouragement to lay down & stay.”
It’s like that’s my life “laying & staying”.
You are such an amazing groomer! Your love for every animal that comes into your shop is from your heart. I love watching your videos ❤
Hope you never change❤❤❤
I am not even a pet owner but I am addicted to your channel! Your love for what you do comes through in every video.
Amazing how a creature so ferocious looking can be so sweet❤
watching him get his ears cleaned and the absolute bliss on his face and how good it must have felt.... that was great, I'm really glad you could bring relief like that to him😌
Another great video. I admire the gentleness with cleaning his ears. ... and i value the fact that you put HIS comfort first.
We bathe dogs at the daycare I work at, and there is no greatest workout than trying to keep these dogs standing when bathing or drying them. My back always kills me afterwards. Major props to you for doing this for a living!
I envoy this lady for being a successful business owner and being able to hide away from the insanity of this crazy world with all these dogs lol
No kidding!
“Can you stand so I can scrub your butt?” Vanessa is always unintentionally funny. ;)
He’s such a good boy! So sweet! I wanna give him a hug
Winston is such a good dog. He's so handsome. I just want to wrap my arms around his neck and
give him a huge hug.
Will do it for ya!!! He gives licks in return!
What I find helpful with sour neck areas that stay wet from drooling....I mix my shampoo with baking soda and smother area to soak while I bathe rest of body then finish with neck. It really helps freshen better than shampoo alone. This bath made me smile. So much fun to watch someone else do all that work.
He's so adorable... I wanna hug him. I think my heart melted
UGH! I wanna give Winston a hug!
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 I absolutely could not take dog drool!
@@AloyCosplayer I can understand. Parasites are disgusting. I enjoyed removing and killing the bastards. Revenge, you know lol
@@ethnedragon8287 for me it’s just ticks. Fleas and maggot infested wounds are fine. But ticks give me the major heebie jeebies 😂 as far as the revenge thing goes, I totally feel you on that. My favorite revenge is not fly larvae. I just love suffocating those buggers under a thick layer of vaseline. So satisfying 😂😂
What does it do to carpet?
Cheers to the Winston's family. When you are so secure in yourself that you don't need to woof to communicate. 😎
He is definitely secure and comfortable 😅😅 no woofing required 😂
what a well-trained dog, Winston is indeed a very good boy
Thank you so much for your kind words!
I grew up with Old English Mastiffs and they were ALL massive babies. A few were incredibly dog aggressive but they LOVED kiddos. Winston is definitely the bestest boy 💓💓💓
Mastiffs are so sweet! I love the ones who don’t realize how big they are! ❤🐶 And the males are all “Sir.”
He is adorable but I couldn’t deal with the drool irl.
nor me. Bleurgh! 🥴
It’s not for everyone!! We understand 😂
Fair. Some mastiffs dont drool as much. If youre thinking of getting one, look for one with shorter jowls.
What a sweet boy!!! I admire your ability to work with such a big dog.
My last beloved dog was a Brindle-English Mastiff, and he weighed 230pds. And he was equally reluctant to stand during grooming. It was an "Olympic sport" getting him clean. I miss him dearly, but Winston is beautiful, and made my day watching this.
Such a good gentle giant!❤
What a beautifful gentle giant. Such a good boy. He did not care much what you would do with him as long as could sit or sprawl.
