    Great review. I have a 6904. It's a fantastic gun. Shoots with my Sigs and Berettas all day--and I honestly think the DA trigger pull superior to each of those. And I think your historical context is on point. Price is really what killed the all metal service pistols for LE and military. Wish Smith would bring out some iteration of the 3rd gens again.

    check out the 4506, 4566, 4516, 1006, 1066, etc. 1006 is 10mm and 45xx is .45 ACP. My carry arm for many years and yes I still carry it and 1911 and a Glock. They are all in my rotation and all I carry are in .45 ACP the 10mm I save for hiking in the woods/ jungle(I live in Florida).

    The model 52 is a pure target pistol for conventional pistol competition (i.e. bullseye). It shoots 148 grain .38 special mid-range full wadcutter lead bullets only. The magazine holds a maximum of five rounds. Extremely accurate and the trigger is something to behold.

    12:07 I was living in SoCal in the 90s. Every single agency east of LA (LAPD and LASD went Beretta), had S&W's chambered in .40. Even the CHP adopted 4006 statewide. We called them "boat anchors" because they were so heavy. Still, love my 6904. I wear it sometimes at training to show the new guys what a real pistol looks like ; )

    Not sure if I have the model numbers right because I haven't shot them since the 90's. I have 4 of those models, 469, 669, 6904, and 6906...I may have to pull em out and start shooting them. There are two blued and two stainless/aluminum models.

    6904 was always one of my favorites in my grandfathers collection and now I’ve inherited it and it’s my new edc. I’m having a hard time finding a solid holster for it though. I’d like to get an iwb kydex but it seems like the M&P are the only S&W models that anything is made for. Do you (or anyone else that may see this comment) know if the 6904 is comparable to any of the m&p models and would fit the holsters?

    I own a Smith & Wesson model 915 - 9mm, which is just a budget 5906, in black, aluminum frame, single side decocker/ safety. I would put it against any Block Glock model 19 out there. Megar now makes 17 round flush fit mags for the model 915, or any 5900 series gun,..which beats the Tupperware Glock model 19 all day. I put Houge wood grips on mine, DON'T GET THE WOOD ONES, they made the grip waaaay too large, so I just ordered a new original Smith plastic grip & put it on. Size wise it is just slightly longer than my CZ 75 P01 compact decocker only, but the #915 is thinner in the hand with original grip. The CZ P01 compact is the same size as a Glock 19. With 18 rounds in my Smith model # 915 it beats the Glock all to Hell & is much more comfortable in the hand than a Glock. You know that CZ'S always feel like part of your hand. I have "Lok" grips on my CZ P01. They are great, but still larger than the # 915. The Smith # 915 is only 1/2 inch longer than the model 19 or CZ, & thinner than both. I'm old School Cool. I'll take the Smith & the CZ over any plastic Block Glock ever made !

Thanks for the history lesson - I enjoyed it. I like S&W revolvers but was totally turned off by the M&P series (not the 2.0) and the shields and the GVE series. S&W had a great thing going and they ruined it when they went to the striker fired weapons to compete with Glock.

  • @garyK.45ACP
    @garyK.45ACP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for a good history on these guns.
    I was a police officer from 1973-2009. We carried revolvers until 1988, then were issued Beretta Model 92 FS pistols in 1988. I went into plainclothes work in 1990. The department tried to issue me a Glock 19 as a duty weapon. I wouldn't have a Glock if you paid me to carry it (which they were doing) and gave it to me for FREE (which they were doing), nor would I stick a striker fired pistol into my pants at ANY "o'clock position". I have a couple striker fired handguns but none that I carry. They are fine stashed in drawers for home defense. So I declined their offer of the Glock 19.
    I purchased a S&W 6904 and a SIG P228 (both were on the approved alternative list) and did my own testing and eventually settled on the SIG. I had some ammo feeding problems with hollow points with the S&W, never had a bobble with the SIG. I kept both and used the SIG as my duty gun for 19 years. The S&W was my backup. I still have both. Like I do with my 1911 pistols, I polished the S&W feed ramp and extractor hook and that seemed to solve the problems.
    I actually preferred the bobbed hammer on the S&W, at least in principal, but the little hammer nub on the SIG never was an issue for concealed carry. I still don't have a Glock and would still choose the S&W over any Glock for CC.
    Now I am retired and live in a warm climate and it is difficult to wear clothes to conceal either of these great handguns, so they are mostly range toys now. But when the weather turns cool a few days a year, I do carry one of my larger handguns, and last summer when there was civil unrest around the country (fortunately not where I live, but who knew at that time?) I made it a point to carry the SIG or the S&W rather than my usual 8 shot Kimber Ultra CDP or 5 shot S&W 642. Just had to wear a looser shirt to cover them.

      @45AlfaCharliePapa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your service and the first hand information. Always great to learn about what Glock was doing to break into the market. A lot of odd and creative deals to get them into the hands of officers. Window dressing to normalize the plastic frame and striker fire system with the idea of selling to the masses. The more I learn the more I lean towards the old double/single hammer fired autos or revolvers. Thanks for watching.

      @@clifforddaniels1317 I liked the Beretta as a police service pistol. I was skeptical at first but came to really like it. I carried it only two years until I went to plainclothes duty, but the department allowed me to buy mine for "replacement cost". I still own it.
      It is too big for everyday concealed carry.
      But I will say that striker fired pistols have been around a long time. My Browning model 1955 (Browning's US marketed version of the FN 1910) is striker fired. It was a striker fired FN 1910 pistol that assassinated Archduke Ferdinand, starting WW1.
      The "Baby Browning" (1931) is also striker fired, just to name a couple.
      I don't carry the M1955 often, but have used it as a "tuxedo gun", for which it works really well.
      Having been through the cycle of sons, nieces and nephews getting married, I don't wear tuxedos much anymore.
