What an outstanding pistol! Congratulations on your acquisition. Regarding the safety, a friend of mine that is a big 2nd & 3rd Gen S&W collector once told me the mantra was "Guns up, thumbs up!" to retrain yourself from traditional 1911 style thumb safeties. 👍👍
It is pretty outstanding. Regarding the safety, just a matter of training so I can get used to it. The same as on my HK P8. As always, thank you so much for stopping by!
Awesome gun, I honestly didn’t even know this gun existed,But thanks for sharing,And I don’t blame you lol, I wouldn’t get rid of it either if it was mine, And wow what a trigger 😮
What a great find. With all the original boxing etc. I've seen this firearm in the late 80's but didn't know the model "745" Smith and Wesson really made great semi auto pistols during that time period.
Very nice , I'm a big fan of S&W and I would buy one of those in a heartbeat if I got the chance, beautiful gun. Somehow I've never seen one of those awesome video.
I owned one of these back in the 80"s for about a year. It shot well but as nice as the trigger was it didn't capture any love from me. I now own a 645 which I like more as it has a decocker. The biggest complaint I have with the 645 is the shape of the trigger guard, just too small. It's good that it came with extra magazines as they are very hard to find now.
I haven’t had the opportunity to shoot the 645 but I know they are nice as well. Yes, I’m very fortunate that it came with three magazines. Thank you very much for taking the time to stop by.
HRFunk carried old S&W models like this and has several, maybe he has some pointers. The dual...well kinda triple tone makes it such a beauty. That trigger guard with the checkering and angled front of the trigger guard may really help gripping around it if one learned to use that grip. The 'reverse' safety was quit common in that time. This one was copied by the P.38 which was also copied heavily by Beretta. Later on you see the same save is down, fire up on the P8 variant of the H&K USP to make it easier for the Bundeswehr soldiers to make the switch to their new service sidearm. It becomes very intuitive after a while. The safety is out of the way and the hand staying below prevents accidentally putting it on safe under recoil like on 1911s where it is taught to ride it. As the grip is formed and you flag the thumb up to make space for the support hand, disengage the safety. Good thing you got mags for it.
The only thing I can see that might be questionable, but common for the era, is no undercut at the trigger guard and the grip texture doesn’t go high enough. I think maybe a lot of shooters were still tea-cupping and so that texture wasn’t as important. It’s amazing how many manufacturers still don’t put it high enough even today. I like the gun though. It reminds me of a Kahr TS9 Elite.

What a gorgeous gun. Take good care of it!
It is awesome. One of the best if not the best trigger I have ever fired. Thank you very much for stopping by.

It’s pretty awesome. Thank you for watching!
Tom cambell pioneered the single action 45 acp. He was sponcered buy smith. His prototype was called super gun. He was a great ipsc competitor
Thanks for a detailed look at a very nice - and rare - steel frame gun with trigger almost as good as a quality 1911.
You are welcome. As always, thank you for watching.
Blast from the past!
It sure is.
Didn't know S&W made that pistol but I'd love to have it. Congrats on scoring a cool pistol with all the paperwork and box👍
What a stunning gun!! S&W used to make some great metal autos…
They sure did. It’s spectacular!

It is pretty spectacular. Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to stop by.
Very nice
Thank you
Interesting piece thanks for sharing! The milling work on the checkering and trigger guard plus that trigger are insane great pickk up.
You are very welcome. I appreciate you stopping by.
I remember that Tommy Campbel had something to do with the design. I met him once when I came to the States to compete in the Bianchi Cup.
I appreciate the information.

I used to own the limited edition IPSC version of that gun.
Nice! Thank you for watching!

I agree with you. It’s amazing that even today grip textures don’t go all the way up. Thank you so much for stopping by.
I do remember the safety cracking if you continuously drop the hammer on them. I think smith and wesson adressed the issue.
I appreciate the info and that you took the time to stop by.
The 645 was first. The 745 was for action pistol.
Where did u find that gem??
Private sale locally.
It didnt come with bomar rear sight. I have a ipsc anniversary edition
Incorrect.
Some came from the factory with bomars, others with novaks. 👍
NOPE 1911
I assume you own a 745?
