      @@dalegribble1560 wow, that's a good price. I remember them always being $325-$350 but then they jumped. Picked mine up with two extra mags, extra set of grips, a case, a holster, and 600 rounds of ammo for $600. I thought it was a little high at the time but certainly not now!

    I trained on the 5906 with many hours on the trigger while in LE. Love that firearm. I have all the latest go to guns, and found a good 5906 about a year ago used. I find myself gravitating back towards this gun and carrying it over a gen 5 Glock. 5906 is heavier, but a strong gun, more rounds (17+1) and very comfortable in the hand and accurate. I replaced the grip with a Hogue and makes all the difference. This gun is a sleeper in the current gun community and is fabulous. Stainless steel / alloy versus plastic frame striker fire. All the Glock plastic / polymer is great, but this is a well built gun that will last the test of time. Great trigger with options.

      get one while you can. They are for sale in used gun counters everywhere! I got one a couple years ago that was a safe queen. Someone most likely either died or sold it to get an M&P plastic fantastic? I love it

    Absolutely solid, accurate and reliable handguns. 3rd Gens. in my opinion represent some of the finest semiautomatic handguns Smith & Wesson ever made. These beauties will only increase in value over the years, and parts will become more scarce.

Found the grips on eBay and if you go on Trijicon's website you can send in your slide and they will remove your sights and replace the vials and make them look mew for $65. Love these old girls. Did the same for the 4006 CHP LE trade ins.

    I’m looking for a holster for my 5906 square trigger guard do you have any recommendations I’m not able to find a holster online…I already went and got one from Blackhawk but it didn’t fit because it had a rounded guard mold

    • @michaelpalm2210
      @michaelpalm2210 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think generic nylon that fits multiple guns...or a leather holster that has a generous trigger guard will mold to and fit the square trigger guard. My round trigger 3rd gen fits the serpa holster just fine, but yeah not the squared. 🤪

    I bought my blued 5906 new when the 3rd gens came out and still have it. The amount of machining and engineering is beyond impressive, especially the time it was developed. It simply can not be reproduced today due to cost and the skilled workers Smith had are gone. The only week point on all the smith 3rd gens is that single action brass trigger spring to keep the trigger forward and not floating around. It just isn't a great design and they fail but in no way render the gun inoperable. It clearly was a head banger for the engineers and this was the easiest, cheapest and fastest was to do it.

    That is an early 5906. It is late 88' or early 89. The reason it does not have the fancy stainless sights is that they used the 459 series sights.

    Good review. Some of the latest 59 and 4006 TSW series did have a plate under the dust cover for attachments. Also CHP TSW 4006 had a machined pic rail. These are nice guns. I have 4 TSW Smiths. One is a CHP TSW 4006. I also found a used Safariland CHP level 3 duty holster. The holsters are metal lined and are really nice. The CHP guns I think are a cut above commercial units. The guns were taken apart and checked by CHP armorers before being issued. They don't make guns like these anymore.

    Should have bought one while I had the chance years back. I prefer the squared trigger guard. Heavy gun, but seems like it would make an ideal range gun.

  • @Kyle-ux4pv

    S&w made forged frames for these guns, we should all ask S&W to make another run of these for a few years... I would honestly pay a grand for one if they did.

    • @prebaned
      @prebaned ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Smith address this many years ago. Short answer no, simply the cost would be more than customers would pay, not to mention the 3rd gen skilled workers are gone, the tooling setup trial and error time, hand fitting, magazine production all ad up to Smith taking a bath with a 4k retail no one would pay in enough numbers to even come close to production cost. Sadly.

    • @prebaned
      @prebaned ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another way to understand Smith's answer is the used or NOS market. $300-$500USD and anyone can own one. Now look at Colts Python. Expensive when new, then when Colt shut the door on production things got wild. Colt couldn't keep the profit margin high enough on the Python. They were flush with .gov contracts and other products with higher profit margins, couple that with multiple bankruptcies, multiple buyouts and owners, skilled Python hand fitters dying off, the used market sent prices into the thousands. Stayed like that for 20+ years all the while Colt was well aware of demand. Fast forward to a few years ago, Colts attitude of FU civilian market changed when no .gov contracts were had, new owners and new engineers wanted a peice of the hugh demand. They figured out how to build the Python almost entirely by machine and modern technology to closely match the original Python with a cost low enough customers would buy and leave a acceptable profit for the board members. The market is hugh, enough for Colt to be producing over 5k Pythons a month to this day and still not keeping up with demand, with a MSRP of 1500USD. well under the average of 3k for a used original Python.
      Different story for the Smith 3rd gens.

    I alternate my S&W 6904 with my cz P01 for my concealed carry. Love them both, each has their own feel. At 26.5 oz with a backup 5900 series 17 round full size mag, it's an excellent peice and very well built.

    I have had two of the 5906`s and a 3906. The 3906 seemed like it was the better shooter. They are gone now, but I have a 4006 with adjustable sights now. Like the other three it is as new, and is a very nice gun, albeit built like a tank. I always liked the look of this series. Thanks for your review.

    • @philmorris8862

      I had forgotten about the full size single stack S&W 3906. I love the full size, all steel, double stack, 15 round, S&W 5906 and the 6906 (which is the compact version of the 5906) with an alloy frame and comes with a 12 round magazine, but will accept the 15 round 5906 magazines. My carry is a 3913 which is the compact size, single stack, 8 round magazine in SS. All the third generation Smith & Wesson pistols were excellent. They all have steel slides and barrels, but the compact versions have the lighter alloy frames. All of them are strongly built to last for centuries.

    Never caught onto any of the S&W pistols - apart from the M&P until recently. Have to admit the design - esp the squared (not rounded) trigger guard, full hammer, high profile rear sights, shorter length makes this a hot looking piece!

    I was issued a 5906 in latter part of 1990 when I was in the police academy and I carried it until late 1992 when we transitioned to the 4506. I shot it quite a bit and it was 100% reliable. Even the 4506's that we had were extremely reliable.

I even got one directly from Blackhawk and they said it for the $5900 series, it got nowhere near close to even clicking the trigger guard. Great video my friend! I have the older cousin of your firearms :-) I have a S&W Model 645. My gun was only produced from 1985-1988. Initially, the only reason I bought the gun is because Don Johnson carried it on Miami Vice after he stopped carrying the Bren Ten. But after carrying it and shooting it, I started to enjoy it more than my 1911's. One neat thing about my 645 is that it would cycle spent shell casings. I used to load my magazine with 8 empty shells and the gun cycled every single one of them with zero problems. These were awesome guns that I wish S&W wouldn't have stopped making. I'm going to look into finding a 5906. I have a Beretta 92FS and a Sig Sauer in 9mm but not a 5906. Thanks for sharing your awesome firearms with us!!

    If you step up to the 5903 TSW you get a rail. I saught after a rail and never use it

      You can get the spacers to make the 15 round mags of the 59xx fit w/o gap and make the grip the 59xx size.
      If you think the 5906 is heavy find the 4006 TSW CHP.

      You also have to realise the smoothness of these guns is also the slide riding on 2 sets of rails.

    With arthritic fingers, I find the 6906 much easier to use than the Glock.
