    Those Brinks 4046 double action pistols have hit the used market in 2022 and they are a fine weapon for $300.

    Went through the police academy with this pistol and qualified as LE expert with a score of 98. Very accurate. Mine has never had a malfunction

    A couple of little points from actual experience with the pistol. I was a police officer in Virginia in the late 80's and through the 90's working part-time for small town departments in the south of the state that required me to supply my own sidearm. I also had my own range about 45 miles south of Quantico. A few FBI agents regularly used my range for private practice. To a man, they hated the S&W 1006, but it wasn't so much about recoil for most, it was about size and weight. Several of the agents admitted to me that they developed a habit of putting the pistol under their car seat and only taking it out if they were doing an interview that they thought could become dangerous. Not a great idea.
    The S&W 4006 was available sooner than the video indicates. I have a receipt for my first one (I was on a wait list) that indicates I took mine home in March of 1990. It came with two 25 round boxes of Winchester 180 grain ammo that they gave a coupon for, and you used your receipt as proof of purchase. I immediately fell in love with the gun. I felt at the time it was the answer to a patrol officer's prayer, and if I suddenly found myself back on patrol today, I'd cheerfully carry the 4006.
    The 3rd Generation Smiths didn't do all that well with patrol agencies in Virginia in the early '90's, but that was only because SIG virtually owned the state in terms of duty sidearms. They would offer prices to agencies that were just above half of retail. But I'll tell you where S&W did really well, and that was corrections agencies that transported prisoners. At the time, nobody was issuing retention holsters to those guys, so the presence of the magazine disconnect as a way to turn off the pistol was a big deal. I still kind of like the idea.
    The 4006 wasn't actually discontinued until 2011, but by then sales were very slow. Even today it remains my favorite S&W metal framed pistol. I also love the M&P's in .40 caliber. I also owned the P229 and the HK USP Compact, both bought used. The SIG was truly excellent with a .357 SIG barrel in it. Both pistols were great, but the SIG had a better trigger. I carried a Glock 23 concealed daily for years with 155 grain Ranger T until I felt that 9mm loads had been improved to the point where I could trust them. That happened for me around 2007 when I finally participated in a Federal/Speer LE wound ballistics workshop. Even though in retirement I carry a 9mm, I still believe the .40 S&W and the .357 SIG to be slightly superior and still shoot pistols in those calibers today.

    I became a Police Officer in '86, and was issued a six shot revolver, a Model 65 with .38spl +Ps. Great guns, but even in the relatively "quiet" Colorado-Kansas area where I was, the bad guys had us outgunned. In the 80s- early 90s you have to remember, 9mm was not as developed ballistically as it is now. We considered it to be a wimpy, European round that has no advantage over .38+P or .357 other than capacity- in fact less stopping power in some circumstances. .40 S&W seemed like a miracle. Good bullet designs, more power than .38, more capacity than a .357. Of course as time goes on, the 9mm came into its own, and by the time I retired in 2006- the .40 had its day. 9mm by then offered less recoil and more capacity with more or less as much stopping power as .40. I carried a 4006 from 91-2000 and really liked it, for whatever reason its heft appealed to me. In 2000 he had a new incoming Chief that mandated "uniformity"- patrol guys all had to switch to G17s, plain clothes G19. You could carry whatever you wanted as a backup.

      @SmallArmsSolutions  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately, back in those days, the 9mm was not understood. False information was out there about its performance. It was always far superior to the 38 +P and its velocities approached lower end 357 loads. The reputation of the 9mm early on was based off of FMJ rounds that would over penetrate. But it was always better than the 38 Special. The 38 was always very poor. Higher bullet weight with little velocity. The 357 Mag was higher velocity but difficult for many to control due to recoil and extreme muzzle flash due to unborn propellant. The .40 bridged the gap between 9mm and 45Auto. At this point, revolvers were finally considered obsolete. The only changes in 9mm are the natural progression of better JHP designs. The pendulum has swung back to the 9mm I feel due to finally more understanding of ballistics instead of all the old wives tales and uneducated assumptions. Then again in this industry, there is a vast amounts of opinions based on unsubstantiated false information.

      @@SmallArmsSolutions Yes sir, we wised up, I carried the .38+P LSWCHP, the so called "FBI" load. IMHO, that was the best .38 at the time and still nothing to sneeze at now. I remember it being a man stopper- but still had issues with barrier penetration such as car doors etc. I really don't remember 9mm having many choices in the early 90s though. I do remember Gold Dots and Ranger(?) loads about 1995-96 but then again I really never paid attention to 9mm until I had to switch to one in 2000.

      Absolutely NO 9mm has as much energy as a .40 😂
      124gr 9mm +P has less energy at the MUZZLE than a 155gr .40 S&W has at 50 YARDS!!!!

      Buffalo Bore, Underwood and Corbon all sell hot 40 S&W ammunition that I trust far more for self defense than any 9mm. The muzzle energy numbers are not even close. Ask any veteran game warden which caliber works better for putting down an injured animal.

    The 4006 will feed empty brass (hand cycled) from the mag into the chamber. That says volumes about the S&W 3rd gen feed reliability. That used to be a hallmark test for custom 1911’s back in the day. No other pistol I have tried can do that including Glock, Sig, HK, etc. I love those other pistols but the S&W can actually feed empty cases. Amazing!

    I'm 63 years old and when the transition to semiautomatic pistols I picked up a trade in S&W 4046 double action only it worked great I could hit whatever I wanted to with it the weight of the pistol tamed the recoil to feel no different than a 9mm my father died and needed to sell it to help pay for his burial I wish I had it back it was all stainless steel with no decocker to deal with.

    Funny thing about Flock getting their pistol out before Smith. In the 1950s, Smith and Remington were working on the 44 magnum, Kruger got a hold of some scrap brass and found out was going on, and got one of their revolvers put before Smith.

    Something I will never understand, people will load the hottest, heaviest 9mm they can find into a S&W shield or Glock 26/43 or other similar sized pistols....but they’ll whine about .40 s&w out of a full sized pistol like a Glock 22 and say it’s too snappy a recoil.

      Jon Smith I remember when you couldn't GIVE anything 9mm away. In the 1990s EVERY SWINGIN' DICK traded his ANY CALIBER pistol or revolver in for a .40 S&W, and come hunting season they ALL had to have 7mm Magnum too. I found out what the gun stores were taking in trade toward a 7mm or a .40 and ask coworkers to please let me go into the gun store first. If I nodded after the gun store said "final off on trade" I'd give them $50-$100 more for their trade ins in the parking lot. I got Hi Power Mk i, ii, iii, Glock 17s & 19s, Browning BAR Safaris in 30-06, Rem 700s 30-06, Win Model 70s in 300 Win Mag. The rifles were an absolute steal! Pre 64 Remington 700s in 300 Win Mag or .30-06, or .308 for $250-$400. Browning P35 Mkiiis for $350.

    I was able to purchase one of the CHP TSW4006 that was 95% on the outside and 100% inside and has one of the SWEETEST Triggers I have ever tried better than my Sig P226 Legion in both SA/DA. I understand that the SW Performance Shop did all the work on the CHP TSW4006 and that is why they are such AWESOME Pistols! The only thinking that the CHP pistols did not come with was Night sights it just had Novak 3 dot but the Rail milled out of the frame does allow for adding a weaponlight. I do agree with you that the 4006 is a JOY to shoot since it has the weight to absorb the recoil and keep the muzzle down no matter what load is put into the 11 round magazine.
    I consider myself very lucky that I was able to get the CHP sample I now own and that along with my SW645 are the Jewels of my Weapon Collection beyond the custom 1911s and Legion Sigs and other pistols that I have because Smith and Wesson build those Pistols in a Different Time when Craftsmanship Mannered things were done by hand not by CNC Machines!

    I have had a couple of 5906`s and a 3906, and like you I looked for a nice 4006 for several years. One day I walked into my favorite shop and there it was, a perfect one with the adjustable sights, which I wanted also. I have had it for ten years now and have shot it very little, but that is about to change. I bought about a thousand 155 grain cast bullets and have a 4# container of HS-6. I know these things are tanks, but with care, will last several lifetimes. I will keep this one until hopefully I can pass it on to another member of my family. I hope to take a deer with it this year.

    I know this video is a few years old, but I picked up a mint condition S&W 4043 a short time ago. While this platform is new to me, firearms are not. I am absolutely in love how this 4043 (same platform as the 4006) handles the 40 S&W cartridge. Had a Glock 23 and it was quite snappy and wasn't fun to shoot.
    I appreciate the time you took to make this video on the history of the 40 S&W round.

    California Highways Patrol models had a “CHP” prefix on serial number. They were also designated TSW OR tactical smith and Wesson. Features include:Bobbed hammer and accessory rail machines out of one piece of billet. These were dumped on the civilian market last year and can still be found at a reasonable price.

      The California Highway Patrol adopted the S&W 4006 series pistols in 1990 / 1991, these had the normal serial numbers and nothing to indicate it was a CHP firearm...other than the several modifications. The most well known CHP modification is the factory bobbed hammer and the requirement for the magazine disconnect among others.
      The CHP adopted the 4006TSW series with the transition taking place throughout 2006 / 2007. These pistols have the “CHP” prefix along with their serial number. As of now (01/2019) the department is still in the middle of the transition period to the S&W M&P .40.

    I graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy on May 28, 1981 after 5 months of intensive state law enforcement training. I selected the S&W Model 68 6 inch revolver chambered in 38 special. The cartridge we used was the Remington 38 +P+ 180 grain bullet. The model 68 was manufactured exclusively for the CHP. In 1991, the dept changed over to the S&W Model 4006 4 inch barrel chambered in .40 S&W. During the 3-day introduction sesion I loaded 3000 rounds in 11 round capacity magazines and fired all 3000 rounds, graduating top of my class. I carried my 4006 until I retired on December 21, 2002. I never had a jam or misfire the entire time I carried it.
    In department tests between the 4006, the Glock 29, the Sig and the Ruger, the 4006 was superior in all categories.

Only thing I disliked was the triggerpullweight, to heavy for my taste. Sold it in 2016, mainly because of that but also because it got harder to find good bullets for reloading. The slide is designed for 40 on the 4006 . It is not just a 5906 with a 40 barrel in it . I never got to see it hold a 4006 until I saw one and bought it last week . Everything about it is beefier than the 5906 .

    To my knowledge: 10mm Norma specs: 200gr @1200fps, 170gr @ 1300fps. FBI lite spec: 180gr at 950fps (mimicking the speed of their trusted 158 SWCHP Fbi 38 spl load.
    I was/amo and huge 10mm fan, loved my G20. But it is too much gun for daily carry and as a "duty" gun. For a combat sidearm, it would be perfect.

    As a much larger human, 6’7, with proportionate hands, I suppose my preference is one of few but I truly feel as though they could’ve kept the 10mm had they gone with the Glock model 20. Truly a gun built around 10mm that I absolutely love shooting more than every other handgun that I own (including a CZ Parrot Czechmate). For some reason though my G40 does not feel the same. The recoil is wholly manageable and it has a very linear recoil pattern unlike .40.

    I had one of these approx 20 to 25 years ago.. and mine had a different hammer, more pronounced rounded bill... anyways, being I couldn't shoot the dang thing to be on point to save my life, I long story on why, but as much as I loved the look of the new unit, that was about $880 ... it had two missing parts in it, the wrong spring, and the sights (rear sight) was from the factory kicked way out.. and then to find that part on a brand new unit, were on back order and after several months of waiting, I turned it into a joke unit.. I stripped in down, to a bare chassis, polished everything, nickle chromed bright the lower & upper, and 18 K gold accented the other parts, like the trigger, hammer, sights, pins, etc... and then, handed it off to my friend, because he wanted to do something stupid to it, so, he hand engraved "W.W.J.D." on both sides of the upper slide and re-chromed the upper... after he was done, he handed it off to another one of our friends to add a wee bit of his stupidity to it, so he machined a custom optics mount from the lower and got that plated in what was the rainbow look of gasoline, due to the mount being titanium, and the anodize process and time, you can control the color change, and then he mounts a 10X rifle scope on it... LOL.... We ain't done yet, another friend took it another step further, as tig welded a quick detachable skinny buttstock that slid into a detented dovetail slot, like what would be found on a P-08 type Luger... and dang was it ugly... BUT ... WAIT... there is more... Another one of our friends, tig welded cleverly a bracket of sorts to the front lower receiver to make the unit longer... (mind you, the firing pin was removed, and the barrel was also removed and never in the same location as the unit itself, I believe the hammer was also removed as well), so now, this ugly unit now has the look of the common composite bullpup, and he machined Pic rails into the front addition.. Another friend added a laser and a flash light.. A few other things were done, but, we got board with it, and smelted it down to remove it from the hands of somebody that wouldn't know that it was a joke and would pose a danger to themselves if ever completely assembled and then test fired.. I will tell you, the amount of laughs we had each time we got together to see how stupid we could make it look, I haven't laughed and cried so hard in a long time, the weak in the knees laughter rolling on the ground, as each of us being novice gun smith's privately doing stupid stuff... Think about it, how often do you get to make a stupid firearm, the mission is always about education, quality, precision, reliability, turn time, appearance and lastly, make some money... Watch, the ATF will be knocking at my front door, LOL... asking where is the WMD, LOL.... Again, guts were harvested to repair parts, and the rest was smelted down into aluminum micro toe clamps for a Prazi CNC mini mill ... Sorry for the novel
    I am not beating up on S&W, as they offer some really nice units, including the 4006 units. but, considering, our joke, was that we were "IMPROVING" the unit at each step, was so dang funny, even though, were actually were not improving it all, resulting in one ugly firearm, that is the joke of it... Sorry S&W, you had that one coming sending out a unit like that... Yes, it was called WMD, I think before the Bush scam coined it as common phrases in MSM..

    Does anybody know if the Police were trained to load the chamber (before going on duty) by holding the de-cocker back when cycling the slide? Just wondered because of the long area behind the safety without any handle material might be explained by this, especially as the de-cocker returns to fire position automatically on this model to ensure the weapon is ready to fire without disengaging a safety..

    • @jeffduncan9140
      @jeffduncan9140 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @carlosspicyweiner7734 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff Duncan - doing so would require “riding the slide”. I was taught “with authority, pull back the slide and release.” Then de-cock. In the early days of the TSW they had trouble loading. Riding the slide made this worse. Later found out it was light mag spring tension. Added one coil and problem solved. Point is don’t ride the slide.
