    Reef Slider has invincibility after the startup animation. TLDR this takes away some interactions during travel where you could shoot it early but they could also explode early. Now once they race forward you have no input. This doesn't break anything balance wise nor hurt it a ton design wise but I'm gonna put it down a tier. twitter.com/ProChara/status/1559894902195904512

      Def agree reef slider will just be good it’s awesome looking and I love the design but it kinda reminds me of more linear splashdown. Which isn’t bad per se.

    I’m pretty sure the Tacticooler gives more buffs than just the movement. The way they mentioned it when introducing it indicated that it would be one of several buffs it gave. Also, this is actually kind of similar to something they did in the past. In the Splatoon 1 local multiplayer, you could break special crates to get charges of specials and other effects. One of these effects was Full Power Up, which gave you a variety of small buffs, similar to what the drinks from the Tacticooler seem to do.

    I like the reef slider a lot, it is just splashdown but better, and you have to be smarter where to use it. So it teaches players to be smarter and use it farther behind to get a bigger reward.

      I feel like it’s a mixture of splashdown for its vulnerability, baller for its explosion, and kraken with its horizontal range. It’s pretty cool how it also go off whenever like baller and it goes super fast!
      Really good pushing option

      And there is only one weapon that supposedly spams.
      Reeflux, the weapon that fucking does everything.
      Even Flingza doesnt spam cuz it doesnt have bomb paint and its higher special P now.
      But maybe, just maybe, I feel that way because this is an aggressive game, where very passive play gets punished.
      Patience exists and you can take time but sitting, camping, and spamming is just gonna leave you in the dust.
      And not ONLY is Reeflux the only actual spammer, but a balance patch is coming soon and that shit has 0 chance of not getting nerfed.

      Hell, Ive used Flingza and it fits much better as an actual Mid/Melee Range support that uses it Ink Mines to call out enemies and whatever.
      When I use Missiles (I get like, 4 if im lucky for one game) its to make a push against a backline whos owning us, or to catch out somebody in a place they REALLY shouldnt be in.
      Also, I made this off of the assumption that Nintendo was SMART and gave Missiles cooldown... they were not. But even so Missiles are fine and are certainly alot better than in splat2.

    I'm glad that you pointed out Booyah Bomb's HP and how to fix it, the armor was the main reason I've never liked fighting the special.
    As for what I'm excited to try out, Crab Tank and Wavebreaker seem like really fun specials, but honestly, I want to try all of them out

      BB I felt like was always a bit of a cheap option to scare off people or to immediately get some points in splat zones so I hope they fix it. But not to where it’s useless

      I think it shouldn’t be nerfed because with tri strike you basically get 3 booyah bombs, plus a way farther range.

      @@KSCK993 then just be aware of surroundings? Zipline is definitely gonna take skill to properly utalize and Chargers may have a hard time hitting it due to its mobility.

    Here's how I would rework Tenta Missiles to make them more fun and interactive:
    First, I would remove the global range, make it a big radius where you can lock on to anyone inside that radius, but not global. That alone should make it way better.
    Next, we will make the missiles act like the teeth from that one boss in Splatoon 1, when an opponent locks onto you with missiles, the missiles will linger in the air above you for around 3 seconds, during this time you can shoot them down and prevent them from landing, or simply dodge them. That way there is more counterplay. To compensate for this, the missiles will deal more damage and have a larger area, so if you don't shoot them down they are harder to dodge and can easily kill you if you're not careful.
    The deployment of the missiles will also be made slower, like it was back at the start of Splatoon 2, but not as bad.
    Now you can only lock on to 3 people at once, locking on to one person sends 10 missiles, locking on to 2 sends 8 to each one, and locking onto 3 people sends 6 to each.
    Finally, you can't start charging your next special until all the missiles land, so you are encouraged to lock on to closer opponents and capitalize on them instead of walking all the way back and getting the whole team.

      That sounds like a really good rework. It build off of Chara's ideas of limiting range and making them less spamable but also transforms the attack in a meaningful way into something that feels unqiue and more engaging. Maybe instead of having you deploy missiles (since now we have 2 specials that shoot missiles up into the air, just one is 3 big missiles and one is a bunch of little one) you could release drones who they themselves fire missiles. A drone would track the player and fire a set number of missiles at them, once their missiles are used up they'd kamikaze as a final attack that is more impactful than a missile. And of course players could shoot them down, stopping the missiles and stopping this final attack from happening. Balancing for multiple targets is tricky though. It's hard to keep that overwhelm one player vs. annoy several feel intact with over tuning either end.

      I've been thinking about a nerf where swimming and trying to relocate would drain the special meter, so you have to be clever and think about when and where you're popping them. Your ideas are so cool though, as the others have said, I love the concept of gunning down the missiles before they land!!

      That would probably make it one of the worst specials in the game if you could shoot the missiles down, also if you can only target in a small area then it should be able to target all 4 people on the enemy team at once.

    As much as we all love the ultra stamp, I feel that design is also about the "Working as intended" aspect as well, and ultra stamp has issues with its damaging hitbox and is also very inconsistent with its blocking shots/damage bit at the front of the hammer. Still one of the best designed though, obviously and even then you could argue that the reason the front doesn't fully block is because it's still supposed to be risky, and the hitbox issues are remedied by the fact you can stop and directly with the jump swing as well as having a backup 40 damage splash. Good video, hope to see the chara range stamp blaster in S3

      @@G1Radiobot I've been killed by a blaster's direct hit while Ultre stramping before. The hitbox is really bad, it's basically a gamble if you'll get hit or not.

    Words honestly can’t describe how excited I am for the competitive scene of this game. If they can rework all of these Splatoon 1 specials to PRETTY high effect and can make it fun to fight against AND use I have faith they can pull off the same for 2s specials, with Missiles being the main gripe. Can’t wait for the 27th!

    if you look more closely, it seems that inkjet projectiles now explode twice, allowing to kill with an indirect, but it doesn't paint much on the first explosion, allowing for a squid roll to block damage. seems more fun to play against.
    (edit: on a second look, that's probably just the splat animation. I feel stupid now lmao)

      Well considering that the crab tank is both new and has 2 different firing modes, my assumption is that crab tank is what they'll lean towards. However to play devil's advocate, the inkjet may counter the crab tank if the tank can't aim upwards.

    I've finally tackled learning stamp and ink jet since they're going to be in 3, and they are so fun. Especially octostamp when you get someone on a ledge with the jump stamp

    Here are the specials I’m SUPER hyped for and reasons why:
    1. Triple inkstrike. Ink strike was my favorite special in splatoon 1 and it seems so much better with how it can be a great pushing option, It’s kind of what ink storm but BETTER!
    2. Bubbler. I think this is a brilliant idea that is gonna be AMAZING for turf for painting, splat zones for defense with the point, rainmaker to clear out enemies with a rain holder and some teammates, defense for tower control (actually disgusting lmao), and throwing clans safely in clam blitz! PERFECT!!!
    3. Ink Vac. Bro this is gonna be SO GOOD for ranked! Ever need the rainmaker to push? Vac! Ever need to defend yourself and the splat zones/tower? Vac! Need to help the crab tank out a bit? VAC! You see my point.
    4. Crab tank. Speaking of the devil, I feel like this special is gonna be AMAZING for pushing the team, Painting, Moving around (I hope it can go on walls like baller!) And can Synergize with a bunch of specials like vac, bubble, I hope tacticooler cause that would be cool, and some others I might think would work as well!
    That’s pretty much it. Dgmw The others are SUPER dope (Except tenta missles) and I hope to see them later! BUT THESE ARE DIFFERENT!

    If I were to rework ink storm, I'd make it do something for you and teammates that are inside of your own team's storm. Maybe it could be an ability effect like ink recovery, or if they really want to experiment, it could increase the speed at which you heal (but NOT the amount of time it takes before you start healing)

    Keep in mind the description for intensify action up also specifies that it reduces jump shot RNG. If the effect is ridiculously good this special might enable some crazy maneuvers from stuff like blasters and gals. We also don't know if IA up is a shoe main slot specific or not yet since we only saw it on a shoes main slot, if that's the case the special might even offer the exclusive chance to double the effect of the ability
    Edit: "It's only natural to lose some accuracy immediately after *jumping* or using Squid Roll and Squid Surge. This ability will lessen that effect."

    One idea I had to rework Tenta Missiles was to make the missiles more like the Torpedo sub. They’d be slower and larger to be more obvious to the target, and you could even shoot them down if you had good aim. That way, less mobile classes would be able to at least stand their ground instead of being forced to move.

    I’d love to see the Splatana Stamper with Reefslider. Chainsaw Man reference aside, I feel like it’d be a great mobility option for close range weapons, making for both a great escape tool (with a blast to cover you when it ends) and useful for getting in close for a rush attacks (letting you pick off whatever survives the blast with your main, provided the end lag isn’t too harsh).

    Something small I think they could do to improve inkjet is give the player some option to control when they recall without needing to be near a cliff. Maybe something like how you can throw stamp. I don't think it would fully fix its vulnerability problems, but it is an option I think could help it a fair bit.

    I super love those new ones. You can tell they are really learning and trying to add engaging specials. I love the wave breaker, what a cool idea to have it disrupt that way.

    We might even be able to use these specials in practice before September 9th, since the splatfest world premiere will have a total of 26 weapon options, which gives a good chance of all 15 specials being available

    Ngl, when I got my hands back on my beloved Dualie Squelchers, I was kinda put off by the Wave Breaker.
    It is now one of my favorite specials. I love how it can just disrupt anyone, point out people in the vicinity, and the extra damage is very nice now that Main Power Up is no longer an ability (as far as I can tell anyway). Love it, and totally agree that it deserves to be in Perfect.

    Back when Splatoon 2 was more recent, I had thought that a special in a future game that made use of the fact that the inklings and octolings are actually made of ink by letting them stretch and stuff would be really cool, and now they actually have it, as well as the fact that its on my favourite weapon.

    After playing the testfire I absolutely LOVE the wave breaker on the heavy splatling. It’s literally PERFECT for the weapon for me, being able to cause so much panic or get an instant tracking on an enemy that may have been trying to flank to turn around and fill them with ink is so satisfying and the fact that you can break it is enough to balance it out

    I really thought you wouldn't like Wave Breaker and when I Saw It, I FREAKING LOVED IT. I like all the subs or specials that let you positioning the enemy. Is another way to control the match and I am so happy you think is very very good.
    Definitely, I am going to use a lot Crab Tank and Wave Breaker.

    so looking forward to this game ! happy booyah bomb is back (I main kensa splattershot pro or gloogas) but depending on the rank mode I rlly enjoy playing a supportive spot in the team, so wavebreaker and tacticooler are really exciting ! can't wait to see the new kits :)

    Wavebreaker seems like it could be one of the specials for the Exploshers. It does a little bit of everything that the Explosher appreciates; it does a bit chip damage, it tracks opponents, and it forces opponents to move a bit more predictably. Killer Wail 5.1 is another special that goes well with the Explosher, but I fear they might be a tad too strong together. Crab Tank might seem a bit redundant with the Explosher, but I think it just gives it extra, continuous pressure. The turret fire can be used to finish off opponents at the start of the special, and the cannon lets the Explosher continue to bring supportive fire to its teammates. The Crab Tank also gives the Explosher additional mobility, which it would be useful for it.

    I’m excited to see triple ink strike. I have fond memories of using regular inkstrike in a splatoon one and loving it and though I can definitely see it’s flaws now but for me it will be hard to beat the nostalgia seeing an inkstrike in a new splatoon game. And also zip caster because I want to be spider man.

    Here's my random thoughts about the specials.
    I kind of feel like the tracking one and the ink vac are going to become a meme, like what happened to Splashdown, or even the Pow Block in Mario Kart Wii, where people will quickly learn to just not shoot at the vacuum or just jump over the lines.
    Though in both cases, at least they'd still provide protection to teammates and cause the opponents to move in a more predictable pattern due to having to jump repeatedly, maybe even messing up aim if they have jump RNG, kind of like how the (homing form) Torpedo is used more for tracking opponents and distracting them than actually causing damage.
    I wonder if there are any "instant cast" types of specials like the Ink Armor, where you can immediately return shooting instead of being locked in a transformation or an animation, and take full advantage of the instant ink refill you get when you use a special

      If you shoot Ink Vac enough then theyre even more vulnerable.
      They have no main or sub and the ink vac is gonna stop...vaccuuming so you can also hard focus them if youre confident in your ability to drop them beford they fire. Also Blasters can probably just decide that they lose.

      Vac can still be used as an anti zone special and wave breaker can stop dualie players from playing the game and force other players to either squid roll, which you can predict where they will land, or have the jumping end lag

    To be honest, I have a big hunch the Wave Breaker is actually a four shot, but it deals nearly enough damage so when they both stand in the ink at the end, it increases the damage just enough

      Strike cant use its main weapon and if they arent all used at once you can paint over them so long as your team has somebody watching their backs.

    I said it during the stream, but I really do feel like Ink Storm is the gatekeeper of Specials. It's not spectacular, but it is nice and functional and straightforward, and if a Special doesn't clear those goals then it's not worth keeping around.
    Ink Storm is definitively on the simpler side, but I distinctly remember how I, as a new player back in 2017, thought it was so cool that I had the power of to freaking manipulate the weather! And while it doesn't have a ton of depth to it, it does pose new players with a lot of interesting questions. Do I throw it and move with it to go on the offense? Or do I throw it somewhere where it can paint and be a distraction while I go and do something else? I think having a more newbie-friendly Special is good and healthy for the game, and Ink Storm manages to clear those goals while also being useful and functional at a higher level.
    Most of the returning Specials feel very carefully and deliberately chosen, which makes it all the weirder that Tenta Missiles is among them. I have to admit that I am not too worried, though, because seeing how thoughtfully all the other Specials are designed makes me confident that Nintendo brought back Tenta Missiles thinking they could be fixed.

      If tenta missiles were chosen, there's a pretty decent chance they were tweaked. Also kind of hoping some of the heavy weapons get that grappling hook special so it can hopefully have a better chance to escape or give them a much better option to get places quickly due to how sluggish they inherently move.

    I think zip caster and the vacuum thing together is perfect because zip caster can play aggressively while the vacuum can make sure when you land back you get cornered and the vacuum can even charge back heavily if you take the opposite ink

    Here's a suggestion for tacti-cooler:
    It grants four subs of run speed, swim speed, intensify action, and ink resist,
    but then, after the special is popped but before it's deployed, the user has a moment to choose one other effect to put on top of it before they throw it,
    Such as bomb defense dx, special charge up, sub power up, or main/sub ink saver.
    Maybe that would retract from how simple and straightforward the special is, or make it slower to use, idk.

    Did anyone else notice that in the part of the direct where they were showing off salmon run, that there are more than 4 specials in play? I counted 6!
    Reef Slider, Inkjet, Inkstrike, Crab Tank, Wave Breaker, and Booyah Bomb.
    I don't know if this has been mentioned by anyone yet, it just caught my eye!

    Hot take about the Tacticooler: A mechanic I would be fascinated by would be if the other team could take the drinks as well, thus having to be tactical on where you place it. Just some food for thought.

    Anyone surprised that Splatoon 3 brought back specials from 2? Since 2 had all new ones, I expected 3 to have all new ones as well, specially since its on the same system as 2. Also, with so many amounts of special, it'll become harder for me to choose a weapon.

    They have gotten SO much better with the special design. They seemed to gradually understand more and more with each entry what makes a good designed Splatoon special. And yes, we don’t have the game yet, but I can already tell these are the best designed yet.

    I think Tacticooler will also give you LDE buffs like Main Saver and Sub Saver, which would be crazy. Imagine being able to bomb spam mid game to retake tower or zone? Might even be too good

    I'm mostly excited for Ink Vac, personally. It looks incredibly fun to use and it's on Jet, a weapon I really enjoyed in 2 but didn't like either of the specials on. (Tenta Missiles are good but they aren't _nearly_ as interesting to use as Vacuum seems to be, and it made the weapon contraversial so that's also a downside. I don't care too much about that especially since I also play Blob but still.)

    2:36 they did tweak ink jet, the shot is now energized, similar to rainmaker, where it starts off as a glowing shot that, once it hits the ground, it explodes again, doing more chip damage and possibly killing the opponent.

      Are you sure those weren’t direct hits that the Jet was hitting on the opponents? The time between getting hit and death can be a little delayed in Splatoon sometimes. If you are correct though, then that would be a great change to buff Jet without taking away the counterplay that other specials in 3 have against it.

    my thoughts:
    me personally i think the mini killer whales special is just too cool but i guess the idea of having like little gaster blasters that you can fire at people is really cute, awesome and the things i could do with it are interesting, part of what i like to do is take new things and look out for the best strategies, like the tacticooler, yes just being a support special is not the easiest thing to want to use in this game but the things you could do with it might prove to be better then one may think, as they mentioned there are a variety of effects, so who knows, and even then ya gotta look at it from the stand point of the performance in your team and how they will use the effects there given its hard to say as the game isn't out but who knows, the tri strike is an awesome one, not much i can say about it till the game is released but if my suspicions are correct and my strategies with it work, then i may have away to cause some major chaos with it hehe

    When I saw that my main, Dualie Squelchers, is getting the Reef Slider, I was quite happy. I’ve never loved the specials with either Dualie Squelcher kit. I like missiles enough, but was disappointed when the second got Ink Storm. I wanted it to get one of the more aggressive specials, like Stamp or Booyah Bomb. It always took me out of what I was trying to do with the main weapon, and I feel Squelchers should get one offensive and one more support special, since the main sits between the two - the player should decide whether they want to favor more front line or more support, not have two choices that incentivize sitting back.

    Tri Strike is basically 3 mini Booyah Bombs. With these 2 specials being so similar in how they function, they each need to have unique advantages over each other to differentiate them. Tri Strike had speed of deployment, mobility, and 3 hit boxes it can throw out with varying positioning and timing. Booyah Bomb needs to charge up, but it can battery your teammates specials while doing so. It also traps you in the air until you throw it, so the armor and range are necessary to help you stay alive long enough to throw it or throw it from a safe distance. And the only paint Booyah left in the direct was from the 2 splats it got, so they may be removing its ability to paint entirely, which gives Tri Strike another selling point over it. Strictly from a design stand point, they do seem to be doing a good job of differentiating these 2 very similar specials.

    Zipcaster is my favorite special not just in splatoon 3, but in all the games, because it’s a really cool movement tool, which is something that has been really lacking. I also really like all the new and reworked support specials, ink vac was weak for me at first but I never really considered it to be a support weapon, at first I saw it on charger and thought it was like a get out of jail free card, and now it’s also become one of my favorites.

    I think reefslider’s end lag is for balancing because it’s really powerful and easily puts you in a good spot to get another splat in. The end lag gives someone time to turn around and agro on the player without being immediately punished

    ink storm was my fav special in splat 2 and I would like it with a brush
    i think making it shorter duration but have more painting ability (not more damage just coverage) would be neat. i always felt like it travels so far but didn't cover enough in any area.

    According to Inkipedia, which I have no idea how reliable it is, Tacticooler gives 3 mains and 9 subs of
    - Swim Speed Up
    - Run Speed Up
    - Intensify Action
    - Quick Super Jump
    - Quick Respawn (regardless of if you kill)
    - Special Saver
    - Ink Resistance
    So that moves it to Perfect, right?

    Reefslider and Crab are the ones I'm most looking forward to trying, with Zipcaster slightly behind them. I doubt I'll ever be good with Zipcaster, I never got good with Inkjet, but like with Inkjet it looks like it'll be a blast to use. As for Reefslider and Crab - Reefslider gives me how I wanted to use Baller when I first saw it - Something that can get you in somewhere quick and fire off an explosion where you wind up being - while Crab gives me its fun ball-based movement of Baller as one of it's two modes. Hopefully splitting those from each other will lead to something that means neither needs severe changes.

    One thing that I want reworked/gone is the invincibility you get after throwing your booyah bomb. You need to be able to punish bad positioning and this special is way too forgiving and too many people are using it as panic button.

    Your "It's not a splatoon 2 sequel" video honestly got me a little worried since I've never been a fan of how splatoon 1's specials allowed for people to 1-man-army a lot of objectives and not really work as a team or give support, and I didn't want splatoon 3 to return to that for sake of pandering to 1 players. But this video is kinda countering that mindset and making me even more excited for 3: It's clear the team learned lessons from the specials of both games and the support specials in 3 do actually seem incredible when they're explained well!

    big bubbler being cacellable by the top is a very interesting choice, since backliners are the ones who complain the most about shields and letting them having an advantage on cancelling them is very smart
