    Nigel, I like to thank you for all the fine videos that you have given us in the past. It really has been nice to go into the Bonsai Zone world especially during these crazy C19 pandemic. The additional footage that you have provided with the truck, greenhouse, your cat and all the other interests you have in life shows that you are a upstanding and well rounded individual. Thankyou for letting us into the Nigel Zone. Thankyou

    Watching the evolution of a bonsai as it develops is amazing. One can train a tree but the tree will always exercise its own will. Nice decisions. Thanks

    In these confined times, I have to say that each and every time you put out a video it makes me a little bit happier and I am glad I have a bit of your journey to watch. Cheers Nigel and keep doing what you are doing. They say not to bare root Larches or that Norfolk Island Pine cant be trained, yet you seem to get away with alot and then some. Being different is a quality not a flaw.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've seen that too, some people use linseed oil or Penetrol to preserve the rust and stop it going further. These coatings aren't permanent where as the clear coat is. Some people like the clear coat others don't! I haven't decided which way to go, if I do use clear coat, it would be a matte coat over the rusty sections.

    This is EXACTLY the problem I'm having with Big, my 40 yo tiger bark, Microcarpa! It's a real pain. I vigorously cut the vertical growth back and it just returns, shading out the lower and vertical branches. I even have a problem with a vertical branch that has been growing more vigorously off a primary limb than the one that SHOULD be the leader growing directly off the trunk. The vertical branches grow, the canopy starts shading out the lower branches and this poor bonsai is now filling the center window of a rather large bay window. I know of an expert who actually adds side lighting hanging down the side of the lighting stand. Of course he keeps his bonsai inside all year. He is the "ficus king". He's well respected and has an income that reflects that. He has a huge room with ceiling lights that mimic the sun and side lighting that gives the effect of June 25th 24/7, 365 days a year. But I have only two rather large bay windows that face S, SE for the winter. Most of my problems occur during the winter. I've got a vision and a plan, but first I'm going to have to do two air layerings to get the main terminal "pretender" out as well as another branch. I'm kinda choking on doing this. Mostly because Big dearly needs to be repotted and serious root work done and I can't decide which to do first. Big is seriously root bound; it's been two years. If you have time, please give me a little advice. I'm thinking I should re-pot before I air layer, since Big and Company are going to be put outside for the summer season in about four to six weeks. Perhaps I should let him recover and then do the air layering (wihich will take another six weeks). I'm afraid if I continue down this path, Big is going to be the bonsai that ate New Jersey.

      The Ficus bonsai can get large very quickly and it can take a lot of difficult decisions and some hard pruning to keep then at a reasonable size! It would be best if you send me some pictures of your tree and I'll see of I can help!

    Hey Nigel, really enjoyed the journey on the truck rebuild. I do have a single question. Looking at the pictures of the frame, the frame is nice and painted. Why did you decide not to do the underside of the body and bed? Knowing you live in snow country and your truck will likely see it's share of mud, I would like to think if it were me and my build I would have taken advantage of the off frame status of the body and blasted and painted at minimum. There's an awesome coating here in the US called Linex. Spray it on anything and it'll last for a long long time.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was expecting the underside to be painted and it would have been a good time to do it. I guess I didn't pay for that so I'll have to crawl under and do it myself. I'll have top wire brush it all down and then prime and paint it. I'm hoping to paint the underside red so it shows up against the black frame. Thanks I'll look for a good under body spray!

    • @TheBonsaiZone

      I would just start off with a pair of good branch cutters and then as you find you need another tool to do a specific operation, you can slowly expand your collection. Are you familiar with how cambium grows? If not, look into that first. Think about callous, and how you might see the stem while rooting. You want a receiving female end and a male end. The idea, obviously, is to get the callous of each piece to overlap and heal together. You might want to do species related research about hormones and what time of year is best. Do a few air layers and watch how the two pieces heal back together, just as a learning experience.

      1) it makes the tree look bigger and more realistic
      2) for aesthetic reasons

    And the forest is lovely.
    Would it be against all bonsai rules to have more than one species in a forest? Maybe a few spruces and birches?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mixed forest plantings have been very popular in the past, they are one of the most difficult planting's to make. To get the scale of two or more different trees to look right is very hard, but it can be done! I have seen good ones, you need a mix of species with a similar watering requirement and a consistent leaf size and pruning routine. A very fast growing tree may not be suitable to place near a slow growing tree as the one might quickly shade out the other. You don't want to mix a large leaf tree with a small leaf tree unless you are trying to create a feeling of perspective. Have a look in Google images at mixed forest plantings and you will get a feel for what works together and what doesn't. When done right it looks awesome!

    Hi Mr. Saunders, when is it good to move a ficus outside? do you get purplish/brown leaves? Thank you for sharing.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is best to wait until the risk of frost is gone, as any temperatures below freezing will kill the tree. If you have a special tree, you can take it outside in the warmer daytime and then bring it back in at night. Just be sure you don't let it see freezing! It is best to slowly transition your tree to full sun, at first position it in the shade and then over 2 to 3 weeks, gradually increase the amount of sun it gets.

    • @paolomh113
      @paolomh113 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBonsaiZone Thank you very much, so do you leave them outside at 5C as long as there is no freezing temp or frost!! no issues?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@paolomh113 Yes, most of my Ficus stay outside up to about 3 degrees with no problems, you do need to protect them by placing them under a cover or in a greenhouse to stop the heat reflecting into the open sky. Even with the temperature above freezing, you can still get frost develop in an open area. The only tree I have had an issue with cold temperatures, (but still above freezing) is my Kapok trees, they all died in the cold, I think they need to stay warm!
      It is best to bring your Ficus trees in when the temperature dips to around 10 C at night to make sure they don't have any problems with cold weather if you can. I put a small heater in my greenhouse last year and extended the outdoor growing season by a month. it just keeps the greenhouse a little warmer on those frosty nights! You can also place the trees under a table and drape plastic over the table with a small heater running if to get your tree through one or two cold nights until the temperature goes back up.

    • @TheBonsaiZone

      The wood on a Ficus seems to last longer if exposed to air, cut paste will trap moisture in the deadwood and it will rot out more quickly. I have tried both methods and air drying the wood seems to work the best.

    Too much of cars I am not interested and I do not even like cars, they make noise and pest our environment and kill many many people in accidents and by poisoning the air we breathe every day, the video is 1/3 rd Automotive 2/3 bonsai, I am really disappointed to get forced into skipping your videos, normally I would just watch and relax, now it forces me to react, to not feel annoyed by watching cars stuff, the atmosphere did change completely no more meditation.
    I do not understand, why ppl think changing a working concept is a good idea - never touch a running system.
    You will probably keep the numbers of watcher up high, so you will not see a difference, and this channel will improve by this change of concept, but you will lose those, who made it possible to get up in the youtube algorithm ranking in the long run, that will flood you with car fans now, the climate of this channel community will change, aggressive comments will come in shorter distances between them, and the old concept of the Bonsai zone will die in that process.
    I know I do not have to watch it, nobody forces me, and I already commented on this topic once, but I just want to make sure you really understand the consequences, it is always sad when a good thing dies, but I got used to this already by age.
    Well it is my last comment on this topic and I will just accept whatever u do and wish you luck with the reddit style people coming from the "Automotive Zone" of the future.
    TBH I am glad there are already a lot other Bonsai Channels like "Gro Bonsai" who is already outperforming your videoquality because of his highly refined audio track, while you always keep underlaying parts with your intrusively noisy selfmade "music" (honestly, I don't see any talent there), and he is really just starting to improve his videos.
    Only sad that he lacks of a good philosophical background and seems to be more focussed on the technical aspects, which is not necessarily a bad thing imo. The technical aspect really is not what made the Bonsai Zone so great for long time, it is the background, watching a thoughtful person really go rough on roots and cut down both, branches and roots, to improve his Bonsais, styled in a natural looking way while making soothing, almost intellectually sounding comments.
    Cars do not add to that concept at all, not a bit. When I see you made a new video, I am since short always thinking of cars.
    It is not as pleasant as a thought of the old concept.
    So thanks for reading this way too large comment, I know you have so much to read every time, and I really appreciate how much you invest into our short entertaining moments we watch your videos. I wish you a good day.

      Thank you once again for your comment, in these times I'm just trying to get some interesting content out to help entertain people.
      Sorry that I bored you, some people will watch this content as a bit of an adventure and find it interesting to see what I am working on besides bonsai.
      As for your comments about cars and trucks, if they are used responsibly, very little harm is done. I have a sister that hates cars and complains about the noise and pollution they create and then she goes and orders all her stuff from Amazon. It magically shows up at her door step and she never thinks about the air travel, boat travel and truck travel that got the package to her doorstep in the first place.
      Unless you are perfect and living off grid using only nature to live, I find it hard to listen to people complaining about others. I use my truck to haul big loads to the orchard, that is why I call it the orchard truck. The car is one of the most fuel efficient cars made. That is why I show it, to try and show people that a small car can be fun and way more fuel efficient than an SUV. We always try not to use our cars and have gone for many months in the summer without ever using them. Our family cycles everywhere and we even have a three wheel trike to pick up large amounts of groceries.
      I use my own music as a challenge to myself and I find the process very creative and enjoyable. It may not be the best music but it is mine.
      I shouldn't judge someone from the comment section, do keep the constructive comments coming and I thank you for your opinion, but you sound like you need to relax in both life and bonsai and maybe try to expand your interests in life.
      From your comments, I feel you don't sound very happy in life and are always criticizing others for trying. I hope you find some happiness my friend and maybe try starting a TH-cam channel of your own!
      Try to find some fun in your life, these days we don't know how long it will be!
