My Ginkgo Bonsai Update, The Bonsai Zone, April 2020

- I begin the styling process on both the roots and the upper part of my Ginkgo biloba bonsai.
I grew the tree all last year to gain strength for this operation!

Hey Nigel. I'm a biology student and love trees specifically. Ginkgos are really incredible and unique. They're from an entirely different group of all other plants. They're most closely related to conifers, but even those are far of. This species of ginkgo has also been around for about 100 milion years unchanged, which is crazy. They are neither conifers nor other deciduous trees. I love the progress on this tree

I think watching you do a full repot and root prune is my favorite of all of your formats! If you ever rebrand the channel you could call it "The Root King"! I don't know anyone else who takes such care with the roots, and it's very satisfying to watch for some reason.
Thanks Erik, I really enjoy developing a nice root system, it takes all parts of the tree to become a good bonsai, but a nice root system is the foundation!

@@MrFlashwall the only thing we do for the trees is to help them back to health after what we do to them. What we do to them is hardly for them it's for us. Tree is happy to just grow left alone.
I'm actually kinda a newbie and didnt mean to much by it, I actually use non organic fertilizer as well. I agree with washing the roots too. You're my favorite channel.

They are becoming a common street tree in our city, it's nice to see them on my walks!
@@mralabbad7 I grew one from a seed I found in a local park in autumn. But not all ginkos produce nuts only the female ones do. The fruit surrounding the nut smells pretty horrible but you can wait till it rots away or remove it wearing gloves. I just planted mine a 2 years ago in regular potting soil with some plsnts that needed regular watering, kind of forgot about it and one day it sprouted. There is where my knowledge pretty much ends, as I have only tried one seed because the only female tree I know of died shortly after due to a storm. I don't know whether this is the proper way to do it but it worked for me. The tree seems pretty resilient as it survived my sister's poor care during my summer vacation and a few unexpected subzero temperatures. Sadly my little tree has struggled a bit last year, so I'm happy for any advice from anyone with more experience with ginkos. I hope that was helpful : )

@@mralabbad7 also make sure you know the seeds you get have had contact with pollen. There have to be male and female trees around. The female trees will make their seeds even if they're not fertilizer so you can't really tell from the outside. In the Netherlands the climate is also not ideal for ginkgos to reproduce. They can grow here but they won't be able to reproduce so also look out for that
Those were some big cuts again Nigel, hoping for a green Ginko this summer. I have 2 little ones who's seeds I bought early spring 2018 and they're greening up a little already....they have a very long way to go before having a trunk like yours haha but they're still pretty. Hiya Nigel, I just saw this video. Don’t know how I missed it on the first go ‘round. Phenomenal new root production since you potted it from the nursery pot. That pumice/turface mix really did the trick. I very much like how the roots are shaping up. I have an observation to share with you....maybe you already know this but I haven’t heard it mentioned. Forgive me, if you have already addressed this.
I think you have a grafted tree there. In order to assure a male tree, most commercially sold ginkgos are male scions grafted onto a rootstock (usually grown from seed, these rootstocks MIGHT be female). The bark on the bottom part of your tree looks different to me than the bark that begins above what appears to me to be what is left of a graft union. One of your first cuts on the tree in this video was of a dead stump...I believe this is what was left of the original rootstock tree that the cultivar was grafted onto. Lastly, the rootstock is generally much more vigorous than the scion and has a tendency to send out LOTS of fast growing shoots. They often look different than the cultivar’s shoots or branches, too. Just as the ones you removed did versus the one you kept as leader.
I remember a plant tag in the first video. Did you keep it or remember the cultivar name? My guess is that the foliage will be very different than any that might appear from below the graft union. This would be further evidence that you have a grafted tree. Your tree being a grafted tree should not have much impact on your bonsai because you have chosen a styling path that would benefit from keeping shoot growth from the rootstock in check.

I planted some Ginkgo seeds before spring last year (2019) and most of them grew. I hope to get some good results in future. I always liked the Ginkgo tree. Even more now after being to Japan a few times. The autumn colors really look great.

I love using pumice in my succulent soil mix, but my pots are a lot smaller and I (probably) have fewer succulents than you have trees. I'm still on my first 10 lb bag

Great rootwork Nigel 👍🏻it will increase the beauty of the tree for sure 👌🏻if i didn't knew it, i would say you worked on a ficus rootbase, kinda reminded me of one, all these thick crossing roots ... And i think the ginko will be good it has build up enough vigor last year for sure 👍🏻

Do you prefer a specific brand for pruners? I’m a beginner bonsai enthusiast and want to make sure I purchase tools that will last me! I am an Urban Forestry student that loves your videos, your understanding of pruning techniques and tree biology is fantastic! Great way to learn from all levels of background
Hello Ian, no any good quality Japanese tools work really well. I would stay away from the cheaper tools offered on places like E bay. A good tool will last you the rest of your life. The cheap ones work well for about 10 cuts, then you need to sharpen them!

@Nigel: Pumice has one major disadvantage: I tends to break up into smaller parts if still wet when it starts freezing. Lava seems to be more resilient despite sporting much larger "holes" than pumice. This winter, I had most of my outdoor trees have their pumice in the soil crushed to minor splinters and dusty particles, while the lava part stayed intact. So my suggestion would be to not use pumice for trees staying outdoors all winter.

Hi Nigel, do you have a 2024 update on the Ginkgo tree ? ... 4 years should have made quite a difference !
This one got attacked by borer insects and quickly died after. Sad, but I have another that I'm growing from seed.
You should try to use expanded shale as substrate, it is dirt cheap and the best ever substrate, no need to mix it with anything else it is just perfect for this.
It also does not break down and u can always reuse it, because it also does not allow much algae to grow on it, since algae prefer to grow on lighter coloured substrate.
So go buy a sack of it and try it, I am sure you will soon understand why I am using it for all trees that do not require acidic soil. Compared to this, pumice is expensive crap.
You are right about the fungus, it attaches itself by growing directly into the root cells, and cannot be exactly washed off.
Thanks, I didn't think you could wash the beneficial fungus off that easily, otherwise it would be washed away in heavy rain. I've never seen expanded shale for sale around here, where do you buy yours from?

I buy mine from Ebay, it comes in big sacks 50 Liters I think for about 10 €. I could send you detailed infos by mail if you got an emailadress to share.
There are some people selling it for Bonsai but then they demand a way higher price. They say it is better because it is cracked, but it makes no difference.
I use the construction site expanded shale and it is fantastic material, hard, lightweight and porous it holds a lot of water.

Most spruces are susceptible to fungal diseases. I have around 30 of them and your small starts to have some trouble with it i think. I can't see it from close so I might be wrong...

All those people that like growing things can not help but rescue from the bargain bin! 😄 and the darn things always always grow. Me, killed it.
I got three Thuja trees from the bargain bin, 4 dollars each and they all died that winter. Just not enough strength built up over the summer.

Certain species of beneficial endomycorrhiza do seem to colonize the root under the cell membranes. I would suspect that washing would remove very little.
Thanks, I have always wondered how securely the fungus is attached. If it wasn't attached securely, it might just get washed away with a heavy rain?
Hi Nigel I thought that after that hard root prune you were going to use a tile underneath to stop the new roots from going down cheers from Chicago
I find that with frequent root pruning, you can keep the roots that grow downward to a minimum. The tile isn't really necessary unless you repot infrequently, like every ten years or so.
Ginkgo's are one of the worlds oldest most adaptable trees. Dates back to the Jurassic of all things O...O.
If you google it one of the major US colleges had to cut down a huge Ginkgo and they assumed the tree was dead when they had to stump it. Instead the next year shoots came up from the base. Its probably one of the best like Bonsai beginner trees cause you gotta be trying to kill it for it to die LOL.

It did really well, but the next year it got attacked by borers and they killed the tree.
i have 5 ginkgo cuttings about 7 in. tall / 2nd. summer how old should they be to start chopping ? if you planted the root cuttings will they grow ?

Are you at all worried about root pruning before bud break? When is the best time to root prune?
I like to root prune as the buds begin to swell, but before the leaves emerge. This whole month will be re potting season for me!

It is gaining strength and vigor and is growing really well now, I definitely took it close to the limit!

Lukas Mihara on my own experience and others in my local bonsai club. You shouldn’t bare root conifers because you wash away all of the beneficial mycorrhiza.

Yes, the tree was very weak when I first got it, I was worried it wasn't going to make it. Now I'm worried again!

Love Ginkgoes! Hence, I don’t think they would tolerate Brazilian warm weather. Even here in the southeast....
Yes, I think they need a cool period, they can take a warmer winter than a lot of trees, but they do need that seasonal change.
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I have seen two ginkgoes here in my area. And one on a colder region, none look really healthy. When I lived in Memphis, TN, USA, I have seen much healthier ginkgoes. Winter here goes as low as 16-12 Celsius and summer reaches 32-34 Celsius...
@@alvarolupinacci641 yeah I think sadly that's too hot for ginkgo weather. Maybe something like a fridge with grow light could be possible but that would require a lot of work

So far we are well, there have been a few deaths in our city, but it hasn't spread to badly yet. We are trying to be very careful always wearing gloves and staying home if we can. I hope we all get through this!

If you grow a tree from seedling what would be your steps towards a bonsai? First the roots and than the trunk or get a thick trunk first (by putting it in the ground) and get the roots second?
For a really good tree, the roots should be worked on every year or two. The tree should be grown in a container all it's life and it will just slowly get larger and better. Trees grown in the ground can get very coarse looking if the roots and the branches aren't managed carefully.
Nigel: Can you plant those big fat roots since they had good feeders and create more trees from this?
Maybe, but I've probably got too many trees so I better not! Any movement on the Birch trees? My birch trees have really swollen buds, the weather is going cold now, but I think maybe the next warm day and the leaves will be coming out!
@@TheBonsaiZone 9 out of 11 tress are busting in bud. The only two are the ones which we cut all of the branches off. I am hopeful that when the warmer weather comes they will start to bud from the trunks. I'm trying to get ready for my 68 trees from Edmonton. Just trying to get supplies is quite challenging , but by mid May I'll be ready.Stay safe Nigel, you are helping our community get through these issues.

Why does your ginkgo tree that you did the root pruning video not look like ginkgo ? It looks more like an elm or something.all my ginkgos have very different looking bark
I'm not sure why Robert, most of the older Gingko's around here have a smooth grey bark until they get really old!

We have snow coming tonight too. I grow my trees with clip and grow. I do use wire occasionally to position a branch, but I try and do everything with clip and grow.

The Spruce is a white spruce, I believe. I hope the Ginkgo makes it, it will be an exciting tree to develop!
