Best advice for all the kids and teens on this vid looking to become vets ... work or volunteer in the field FIRST. It’s not all puppies and kittens. It’s a lot of blood, guts, pus, anal glands, feces, urine, sweat, and tears. It’s a very emotionally demanding and draining field. You work more with the pet owners than you do with the animals, and not all of them are friendly or even grateful for your compassion for their animal. Half of all owners complain about prices. Depending on where you work, you see a lot of neglect cases. By the end of the day, you come home exhausted. I’ve been in the field 3.5 years starting when I was 17. I’ve worked in a shelter, a low cost clinic in a not-so-nice part of town, and now my current job in a really awesome 3-dr private practice. I, too, wanted to be a vet since I was 7 years old and started college pursuing that path. But since working in the field and seeing what responsibilities vets have and what all their job entails, as well as the responsibilities of other veterinary careers and professionals, I’ve decided becoming a vet tech is the better choice for me. I personally love every aspect of the field and find it very fulfilling. Not everyone has the stomach for what we do, but for those who can handle it, you’ll be very happy. But really, if being a vet is what you want, get your foot in the door, work with a vet, talk to multiple vets and ask about their experiences in schooling and on the job. You’ll be glad you did. Gosh you couldn't have described this job better..! I became a vet as I felt it was meant to be.. But its so stressful damn it and just exactly as u say.. I almost never felt like I've been rewarded or praised by owners when saving their animals.. And that from people who are in some charity schemes.. Ungrateful not even thank u.. Urhh
Daria Krousti it’s a very draining field for sure. And the pay isn’t even good. We definitely don’t do this for the money. At my clinic, we have a couple of awesome regular clients who are always so thankful - even bring us cookies on occasion! They make it worth it :)
I'm 12 and I understand. It will be stressful, difficult, and I might take a while to get used to it. But I also know that the satisfaction of helping sick animals and seeing them better because of ME will be worth it. Zoe Wolf research the requirements of the school you want to go to and go from there. A lot of schools are ok with any major so long as you complete prerequisite classes. Most schools require you earn a bachelors degree. Most vet students I know of majored in biology, biomedical science, or animal science.

It all really depends on what each veterinary clinic wants and feels a vet tech can do on their own. I’m averaging 70K a year, granted I live in one of the most populated cities in North America. You do not need to complete a full bachelors degree to get into vet school . After you finish your second year, you are allowed to submit your application. Completing a full bachelors degree may help you get into vet school on your first try (hardly anybody gets in on their first try) but it is not certain.

All these preteens saying they want to be vets. ;_; lmao I am 25 and just now choosing this. I mean it crossed my mind somewhere in my life but so did becoming a surgeon, an ice skater, a nurse, and a bunch of other random bs. lol I went to school for pro makeup and am working as a makeup artist and it can be fun but.. its not super fulfilling. The people in the beauty industry can be super fake and snobby and arrogant. OOO I can give someone a makeover..whoopdy damn doo. lol I am completely changing my career path. Same dude. I'm also 25 and really wanted to go down this path. I'm majoring in biological anthropology now and am trying to lean heavily on the biology part so I can attempt to get into vet school. Worse comes to worse I have my backups but all in all another 4 years of school ain't gonna be pretty but life is so short as it is as long as you're doing something you want to do I feel like everything will work out in the end.
Im 16, about to graduate in junior highschool. Approaching senior highschool where I'll be taking STEM. I really want to be a vet. I love animals. And i like Science, and Math, a little bit 😂... I'm almost 15 and I loved animals for as long I can remember. I've decided I wanted to be a vet for almost two years. I am more likely to be attached to animals over people but I'm very empathetic. My sister told me it'll be hard due to all the times families choose to put down their pets and I am sure to get emotional baggage
I've known that I wanted to become a veterinarian since kindergarten! In elementary school, when we would do one of those papers that said "When I grow up, I want to become a...." I’ve always wanted to be a vet since I was 3, I’m now 12 and I’m already practising, I study all about the animal body’s and bones, all day for about 6 hours, I’m in top set for everything in school (science, English, math, geography, french/Spanish/German I’m nearly fluent all of them, religion, etc) so I’m pretty sure I’m gonna go through all of those schools and be a decent vet ☺️✌🏼
we’ll keep it up. high school really determines your future. idk what grade you’re in now, but hopefully you finish algebra 1 in 8th grade. If you did, make sure to challenge yourself in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, reading, and a language. I recommend Spanish. Computer science is a great elective to take because of the current technology, and because vets use tech from day to day life. Make sure you are in all honors classes, and try to get yourself involved because schools love people who have a diverse amount of skills. Oh and lastly, volunteer at a zoo, vet clinic, vet office, etc. that’s all I can help with lol…. Idk know if you’ll see this

@@fredrickzamboni4881 hey, I know you weren't talking to me but i can answer your question, the answer is no, as long as you really try to do well in biology and all aspects of science you should be okay, i do recommend to start studying science whenever you get a spare minute, it may be tiring or boring but it will be worth it when you sit your GCSEs and start looking at colleges and uni's. i wish you luck on this path, remember it isn't gonna be easy but if you truly want this anything is possible.

I just saw your comment 1 month later you posted but I really want to comment :) My parents said the same when I told them that I wanted to get into vet school, I know they said this out of kind concerns instead of as an attack, but I also felt the same - that I would prove them wrong. Now that I'm in vet school I would say their concerns were not entirely meaningless - it is indeed stressful in many ways, but then you will never, ever be alone on this journey. Your classmates (future colleagues) and the faculty and the whole industry would usually be very supportive and encouraging. I'm sure your parents will be proud of you throughout this learning process too. Don't give up! :)
Only 1 school in the US requires the applicant to have a Bachelor's degree - There is a lot of money to be saved if you apply as soon as you are done with the prerequisites. Also, the MCAT is not needed.

In the Philippines to be a veterinarian you will have take 2 years of Pre vet then take the National Veterinary Admission Test, if you passed that exam you can now proceed to go to Vet Proper. After your Vet Proper you must take the licensure exam, if you passes the exam you can now go and proceed to your veterinary practice. To sum it up you will spend only 6 years of studies to be a vet in the Philippines.

When I was like young I wanted to become a veterinarian because all my life I love animals and I'm not bothered at all of getting dirty when I touch play and interact with them but my parents told me how hard & different veterinary medicine is compared to human med and it takes long long loooong years to become a professional vet. I actually felt like giving up and depressed after realizing I wouldn't be able to work with animals and helping them because it's my passion. After being depressed I was thinking that I should take zoology or environmental science that involves animals (at least my love for animals isn't dying) but then my friend's father (who is a veterinarian) suggested that if I really love I should never quit on my dream and shared me experiences when he became a vet and the scary challenges of it. Today in my first college year I am more than glad that I am currently studying veterinary medicine abroad in london and though it's hard it's really, really worth it as I learned and experienced a lot. I know that I'll be prepared for what it takes to become a full fledged veterinarian in the future and I really hope I can make it ~! 👩⚕🐾

I’m a freshman student in high school. My goal is to attending Cornell veterinary medicine or Upenn. I know I have to go to school at least 12 years more 😂 I love math so much and kinda good at it. (I’m studying AP calculus and will take the exam on May. Also I finished AB for 2months...) You could become a veterinary technician! They aren’t qualified to do surgery, but they can perform exams, give vaccines, clean teeth, and everything else you mentioned. The main job of the veterinarian is to examine the pet, order tests, diagnose based on results of said tests, and prescribe treatment (which may involve surgery). The veterinary technician (or veterinary nurse, if you’re outside the US) does everything else, including collect samples and run the tests ordered and carry out the prescribed treatments. Vets do all the thinking and ordering, techs do all the hands-on dirty work that keeps the lights on. We also do the facility maintenance and in large hospitals, the manager is often a technician.

Get a GED then apply to a community college after you graduate from there go to a four year college and transfer your credits from your two year college to your four year college (this way you don’t spend 4 years for your bachelors) and get your bachelors degree (majoring in something like biology, pre vet, etc.) after 2 years in the four year college. Take the MCAT and apply to veterinary school.

I’ve always wanted to be a vet since I was 3, I’m now 12 and I’m already practising, I study all about the animal body’s and bones, all day for about 6 hours, I’m in top set for everything in school (science, English, math, geography, french/Spanish/German I’m nearly fluent all of them, religion, etc) so I’m pretty sure I’m gonna go through all of those schools and be a decent vet ☺️✌🏼

we’ll keep it up. high school really determines your future. idk what grade you’re in now, but hopefully you finish algebra 1 in 8th grade. If you did, make sure to challenge yourself in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, reading, and a language. I recommend Spanish. Computer science is a great elective to take because of the current technology, and because vets use tech from day to day life. Make sure you are in all honors classes, and try to get yourself involved because schools love people who have a diverse amount of skills. Oh and lastly, volunteer at a zoo, vet clinic, vet office, etc. that’s all I can help with lol…. Idk know if you’ll see this

@@fredrickzamboni4881 hey, I know you weren't talking to me but i can answer your question, the answer is no, as long as you really try to do well in biology and all aspects of science you should be okay, i do recommend to start studying science whenever you get a spare minute, it may be tiring or boring but it will be worth it when you sit your GCSEs and start looking at colleges and uni's. i wish you luck on this path, remember it isn't gonna be easy but if you truly want this anything is possible.

I just saw your comment 1 month later you posted but I really want to comment :) My parents said the same when I told them that I wanted to get into vet school, I know they said this out of kind concerns instead of as an attack, but I also felt the same - that I would prove them wrong. Now that I'm in vet school I would say their concerns were not entirely meaningless - it is indeed stressful in many ways, but then you will never, ever be alone on this journey. Your classmates (future colleagues) and the faculty and the whole industry would usually be very supportive and encouraging. I'm sure your parents will be proud of you throughout this learning process too. Don't give up! :)

Only 1 school in the US requires the applicant to have a Bachelor's degree - There is a lot of money to be saved if you apply as soon as you are done with the prerequisites. Also, the MCAT is not needed.

My aunt in Mississippi is a dog breeder and groomer. She is very much allergic to dogs, but she didn't cars. it's her passion. My goal is to follow in her footstep s and become a vet so I can work with animals like I've always wanted to. it's been my dream since I was 6, I'm 10 now, turning 11 in June. Animals are my passion, and I wish to become a vet someday.
In the Philippines to be a veterinarian you will have take 2 years of Pre vet then take the National Veterinary Admission Test, if you passed that exam you can now proceed to go to Vet Proper. After your Vet Proper you must take the licensure exam, if you passes the exam you can now go and proceed to your veterinary practice. To sum it up you will spend only 6 years of studies to be a vet in the Philippines.

When I was like young I wanted to become a veterinarian because all my life I love animals and I'm not bothered at all of getting dirty when I touch play and interact with them but my parents told me how hard & different veterinary medicine is compared to human med and it takes long long loooong years to become a professional vet. I actually felt like giving up and depressed after realizing I wouldn't be able to work with animals and helping them because it's my passion. After being depressed I was thinking that I should take zoology or environmental science that involves animals (at least my love for animals isn't dying) but then my friend's father (who is a veterinarian) suggested that if I really love I should never quit on my dream and shared me experiences when he became a vet and the scary challenges of it. Today in my first college year I am more than glad that I am currently studying veterinary medicine abroad in london and though it's hard it's really, really worth it as I learned and experienced a lot. I know that I'll be prepared for what it takes to become a full fledged veterinarian in the future and I really hope I can make it ~! 👩⚕🐾

I love math so much and kinda good at it. (I’m studying AP calculus and will take the exam on May. Also I finished AB for 2months...) It does not matter with vet but also taking AP World History ...(idk why)

Bonus tip is watching veterinarian documentaries, you get to see some pretty horrific shit which will desensitise you. I’ve seen... some stuff on those shows. A skewer sticking out of a pugs stomach, a parakeet with a growth getting its chest picked apart with no anaesthesia, horse with half a face, theres a lot of shit out there

You could become a veterinary technician! They aren’t qualified to do surgery, but they can perform exams, give vaccines, clean teeth, and everything else you mentioned. The main job of the veterinarian is to examine the pet, order tests, diagnose based on results of said tests, and prescribe treatment (which may involve surgery). The veterinary technician (or veterinary nurse, if you’re outside the US) does everything else, including collect samples and run the tests ordered and carry out the prescribed treatments. Vets do all the thinking and ordering, techs do all the hands-on dirty work that keeps the lights on. We also do the facility maintenance and in large hospitals, the manager is often a technician.

Get a GED then apply to a community college after you graduate from there go to a four year college and transfer your credits from your two year college to your four year college (this way you don’t spend 4 years for your bachelors) and get your bachelors degree (majoring in something like biology, pre vet, etc.) after 2 years in the four year college. Take the MCAT and apply to veterinary school.
We dont have high school in the netherlands, i skipped a class and i do pre university which means i can attend a uni at 17, so does it mean i have less years of studying than an american student?
