Being a 4th year vet student, the toughest part for me is the debt to income ratio for new grads. Unfortunately, pet health insurance has not yet caught on like in human medicine. So we have to deal with most clients' bills being paid out of their pocket. That is a reason why veterinarians do not get paid as much. Most of us graduate with $250k+ of debt while making around $70k per year depending on whether you are a large, mixed, or small animal oriented doctor. Luckily, I was able to get a scholarship through vet school that paid 2 years full tuition so that does help. However, scholarships like those are rare and often require special terms. Also, veterinarians are the only profession that is legally able to euthanize patients. For most vets, this can lead into ethical dilemmas and cause compassion fatigue (which is just what it sounds like). So please do not think your veterinarian is over-charging you or trying to pull a fast one on your bill. We are trying to keep costs low while also paying for our massive debt.
You should move to Canada: they make two or three times that amount here.

I agree your costs to " learn " are just over the top stupid , but I firmly believe im not when someone wants $2.000 without so much as a explanation , xray or anything....that I learnt for free.....good luck in your career it can be a great line of work , once you get rid of your learning costs ( which my mind bobbles as to how they can justify that ? ) but thats life I guess..all the best , Yvonne.

Working in the veterinary field has opened my eyes to how rude some clients are especially when it's not the veterinarians fault. It's also astounding to see how many clients think they can get prescriptions for meds without being seen. I do not understand that because you don't get prescriptions from a human doctor without being seen in some type of way.
So true! I've worked at a small animal practise for about 9 months and some of the owners that we get through the doors are so inconsiderate and unwilling to let us do our jobs! It makes everything a lot trickier.

I’m a little late to this comment i know, but I’ve owned my own practice for close to 10 years now and it’s not uncommon to see veterinarians flipping through old grad school textbooks
I’ve been wanting to be a vet forever, but in recent times I’m really reconsidering that. I’ve seen an entirely new aspect to this career beyond just the challenge of being medical able for the animals, but the absolute emotional tolls it takes. I’m terrified of compassion fatigue, of being in a horrible place of inescapable debt, and constantly being surrounded by owners that aren’t willing/able to pay for an animals life that’s completely possible to save. It’s seems like this career is too expensive an investment for a job that will just completely wear you down to your core. I’m cautious now

My advice to you is get into the field take that first step forward and be there. We need receptionists nurses techs and doctors there is a place for you if you want to try it out. Then make a decision. We need people and we love new faces. You never know what you can do

@@konan-mt6sf you can work legally at 16 apply to be a PCA or kennel assistant, work your way up. There are also tech programs look at local colleges that offer a VA or LVT program do your research its never to early!
Since I was 6 I always wanted to become a vet, my family always was like "oh its going to change sooo many times" "you will see some time will pass and it will change" now I'm 18 and It has never changed for me, its my lifetime dream and I hope it becomes true one day 😊

@@Ss-hn5rf Im not, I would say im not too "proud" person, Im not used to do things just to prove people wrong. Its really my dream and Im sure if anything changes and one day I dont want to be a vet anymore I just simply wont become one. I also thought a lot about paths that my parents or other relatives want for me and I could even choose some of them but then I think about being a vet and I just know that this is something for me, its this little tiny gut feeling that tells me this is right and this is something I should do.

I’m only 8 but my whole life I’ve wanted to be a vet. I have good grades in school and I have done research on this since I was 4. I’ve already saved a newborn kittens life, my dogs attacked it and my dad trusted me to help it. I’m very confident that I will achieve my goals.

You can just hear in her voice there is a deep distressing emotional vibe there. I think this would be a terrible job at times. Other times quite rewarding. Not something I would want to take on.

I'm gonna be honest though, some vets take 8 years of schooling to become a veterinarian, others may take 12 years but your going to be in a ton of debt about 150-300k and the slary for vets is like 60-150k and that still isn't alot tbh whereas a medical doctor who went to school for 12 years make up to 200-400k

@@artistrybydivya463 Human insurance is more ubiquitous than animal insurance. There's simply more money in human medicine. Crazy, when considering the cost (time AND money) of medical school and vet school are so similar.

I can see both the perks and the drawbacks to being a vet, Im assuming its similar to human doctors when they have to deliver bad news, so my question is, does vet school prepare students to the psychological aspect of the practice and dealing with the owners who may at times be very emotional etc?
Yes they do. You are taking special class where they teach you the communications between you as a vet and your patients. All in all, and delivering the bad news and how to deal with it. :)
I would say they give some guidance on how to deal with clients, but they don’t really educate on Compassion Fatigue, and speak on the rates of depression and such of being a vet. It’s a pretty hard job that most aren’t prepared for beyond just the medical aspect, and then are expected to do so much more than just the vet part.

As weird as it sounds, you start seeing death as a way of bringing peace and ending suffering for the animal. Its still hard but it prioritizes animal welfare.

I've been meaning to be a veterinarian since I was 7. I've got 10 dogs at the moment and I feed them, wash them, and clean their poo everyday. I've also helped my dog give birth twice. Hopefully, I get to reach my dream!
This video has been the most helpful one I've ever seen. Thank you for being completely honest about your job. I've always wondered what it's like for vets under the mask. Hearing an actual vet saying all these stuff is like a 180 from all the other videos I've seen. This really shows a whole different perspective on how we view veterinarians.

Don't give up just yet! Work your butt off to get good grades and experience volunteering or working at jobs that deal with animals. There are scholarships even for having red hair, having an ancestor relating to abe Lincoln, being born in certain counties, etc. Apply apply apply! Research what it takes to be a vet and everything and anything you can about it. I'm 26 and just recently started school to be a vet, I about gave up because I thought I'm too old to pursue this and I don't make a whole lot of money. But got a grant to pay for most of this years school. You never know just dont give up!
Also I think females make up most of the vets so if you're a male (assuming by the name, sorry if wrong) you may have an advantage because the work force tries to fill a quota for different demographics

I'm a veterinary student. You are right, being a veterinarian is not a good job for people who want to make more. Following your dreams is never enough, and if you already have this mindset; I honestly won't recommend it. Goodluck though and if you do still want to be a veterinarian, then I guess I wish us luck
I am veterinary final year internship. It's true vet's don't earn much.
I’m 23 I’m working my way to become a veterinarian, but the catch is I’m going to have my own business and give animals a whole new meaning of life. I want to stop animal abuse, animal abandonment, kill shelters, animal fights. I want to give animals a home before they go to a forever home, and to make sure they go to a good owner that won’t hurt them. One very main thing I want to show people is, animals are not dangerous especially the pit bull. They are very much human as we are, and I want people to understand that. Right now I’m working on the business before the veterinarian school

@@woodbethany22 I mean that we all start with the dream of helping animals and saving them, and giving them a better life, but the degree changes you a lot, it gives you a whole different perspective. I still love animals, but not the same way. You see a lot of suffering, in the clinic and in the slaughterhouse. They teach you how to make animals more productive for humans, more than healing their health. It's just sad. I honestly regret studying the degree. I should have chosen something else. Actually working in a clinic is the last thing I want to do now. It's such a hard job, with no recognition from society, and they don't pay well. It's not worthy to put your mental health in risk, I'm already suicidal.

And things may have changed since they last time you went to school who knows, there still a bright future for them. I've watched a few clips of a Vet's life and have a newfound respect for you all. I've got 2x 7yo adopted cats & will be taking them to the vet for bloods as a baseline before they get much older. I've also remembered vaccinations... oh and I'll be patient & understanding if my appointment is delayed because of an emergency.

Right now I’m about to go into schooling for being a vet, and honestly now I’m worried about how I’m gonna be able to live with the debt.
Thank you for being honest. I've been between human and vet med schools for so long and I have no idea which one is right for me. I just wish that the billing issue vets deal with wasn't there, if only more pet owners started taking insurances it would be so much easier. Another vet said that there's nothing worse than having the ability to help something helpless but not being able to do that. That's the only thing holding me back from vet school

I wanna be a vet so badly! So ever since I was a kid the first job I wanted to do was being a vet then ofc I moved on to wanting to be all sorts of things but I always come back to wanting to be a vet! I am so compassionate about animals and love learning about animals but when I was a kid my teachers ignored me when I was asking for help so I never got the proper education mainly in maths! Sadly so I’m in year 7 Highschool and I can’t recite many of the multiplications and I can’t do length, I can’t read a clock and I can’t do many things to do with maths but I do like science but ofc I need maths for science and it’s so hard for me to want a job that requires so much maths and being absolutely terrible at maths I don’t know what figures awaits for me but thanks for reading if you got this far💖

I know the video is a few years old, but I've been told that vet salary is increasing each year. I have a friend in vet school atm and she says that you can land a salary of about 80k right after school and can get into the 100k range within years. Maybe it's vet school propaganda, but for me this is the only "career" I can tolerate being in. I don't want to do anything else sooo honestly I have no problem being in debt. Animals are literally the reason I stay motivated and take these awful prereqs to get into vet school. I have no other purpose to do well in school if vet school wasn't the next step.
Salaries vary but I've heard they are increasing slightly. Private practice vets range from 88k-100k or so and specialists range from 125k-350k.
I feel the same way. As a kid up until now, I'm 25, I've always had a deep connection with animals and medicine. My former vet,/boss said I'm made for the field and would speak with high regard to other clients and to myself about it. I have my doubts on whether I'll be good in vet school and as vet but I jump back and fall in love with the profession and medicine all over again. I wish you much luck in your decision and as vet!

85k dollars is more than the average vet in the UK i'm fairly certain. I'm a RVN (UK Vet Nurse) and dont earn even a quarter of that much.
It depends on where she lives in the US. Some regions will pay vets more, but cost of living is usually higher there. Also, I do not remember her telling us how long she's been practicing. That plays a factor as well.

hey! for me, it helped when i recognized what i was specifically allergic to (through blood and skin tests) and try not to touch my face/eyes after I touch any animals at my workplace. I also used antihistamines from time to time and underwent a series of allergy injections. Talk about it with your medical provider and the'yd be able to guide you in the right direction! Good luck!
If you’re just allergic to furry animals, try looking in to being an exotic vet :)

Your money doesn't go to staff salary alone. It helps keep the clinic open. It's unfortunately quite expensive to run a vet. Medical equipment, medications, food and supplies, medical PPE, surgical instruments. Vets don't make commission
In most general practice less than 20% of what you pay goes to the vet's salary. I personally have friends who get paid only ~17% of what they charge a client. These are the industry standards and the clinics' pricings are calculated based on these figures plus overheads. Even then. a lot of clincis are still in huge debt. Medicine is never cheap.
She talks about her job like it's overwhelming and a burden but thankful for it its weird i had to stop watching was thinking about being a vet but the way she talks about it just makes it seem like ugh 😩
Here is what I don't get. Why don't Veterinarians get paid as much as Human doctors? Like I get the insurance and all, how regular doctors can charge more due to insurance, but one argument I CANNOT get around is how Animal lives are not worth as much as Human lives. Now, I'm not going to get into that argument because that is HIGHLY based off opinion and perspective, and I personally disagree with that statement anyways, but that's not the point. WE GO TO SCHOOL LIKE DOCTORS AND THE WORK WE DO IS JUST LIKE A DOCTOR. We shouldn't be discriminated/treated less because of the type of patient we treat, because the schooling and work that we go through is the SAME. What we do is the SAME. We do surgeries just like doctors, we give medications like doctors, we assess the patient like Doctors, we go to an expensive-ass school just like Doctors, so there is no reason we should be paid less. Again, I know the Insurance vs out of pocket thing is the main reason, but the other reasoning is frankly non-sensical to me.
New vets watching this. Please know it's not true anymore. You're getting paid at least 100k + a 50k sign on bonus. And there's no negative accrual, that's bs.

I'm just going to say how I feel if these that's vets really cared for an animal and they know someone who brings one in they ain't got no money they're like me on SS I live on 841 a month my cat was sick and she was dying and I couldn't find one vet that would help me unless I had money in my pocket to hand to him that tells me if you ain't got no money your animals going to die you're a little furry family member is going to die so the hell with these vets they don't care they just want the money

I took my shepherd to the vet after collecting her from the kennel she wasin for a couple of days and she was limping..No xrays , no nothing he said it will be $2,000 to fix her back leg .....I said so what is wrong with it ?? he could not tell me , so I said well when you can tell me what you intend to do for $2,000 I will think about it. Turns out she jumped up and landed weird and sprained her back leg on the concrete according to kennel person as she wanted " out " I took her home , made sure she rested as much as possible , she came good as new , I had her checked last vaccination time . ( another vet lol ) he said her legs/ hips were great and she was in superb condition . Just goes to show some are in it just for the money... absolutely nothing wrong with my dog what so ever, my little mutt ( the cute , spoilt one ) on the other hand is a tad fat but we knew that LOL ...and had I have had $2,000 at the time I could say I still have my $2K but thats not the case , but my shepherd is in good nick so thats good .

He was likely quoting you for an orthopedic surgery (which is so much work and time and some vets require specialist training). This would also include meds etc. It's not always about making money. Surgery isn't cheap even in the human world.
It is difficult to diagnose without doing tests/xrays but glad it worked out in the end though!

Many people that have their own health insurance do not see the full cost of human healthcare because they only pay the co-pay or meet a deductible. Human medicine costs way way WAY more! What are you smoking? ACL repair for a dog 1000-2000. For a human is 7000-9000. Most surgeries are pretty comparable.
Then dont get pets. Animal care costs far less than human care. As someone who doesnt have insurance I can guarantee ya it costs a fuck ton more than pet care
