    Monument’s founding guitarist John Browne took some time out of a busy tour date in San Francisco to perform the song "Atlas" through a Multi-Watt Dual Rectifier and Rectifier 2x12. "Atlas" is from their 2014 release The Amanuensis.
    John played his Mayones Regius 7 string into his signature Overdrive pedal into Channel 3 of the Rectifier set to Modern mode. Settings on Ch. 3 MODERN are:

    Master - 6.0
    Presence - 4.0
    Treble - 4.0
    Middle - 6.0
    Bass - 4.0
    Output - 3.5
    Wattage - 50 Watts
    Filmed and recorded December 17, 2014 in the ‘Mason’s Room’ at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, CA.
    Multi-Watt Dual Rectifier and 2x12 Rectifier cabinet with Vintage 30 speakers and recorded using a Shure SM57 and a Shure KSM 313 Ribbon Mic. Mixed by John Browne.

    The improvement in tone between this and his EMGtv performance of this song is actually insane

      +KawlumPlaysGuitar I dunno about an improvement. A change, for sure. But both are just good as each other for me here. There are some points in this version where I think just a touch more gain would have brought the sound a bit closer to the album (not too much since this tone uses very little gain in reality).
      His EMGtv performance of Atlas I love because the open low notes hit so hard and with so much bass (with the rest of the band behind them), and one part of the chorus here was a little too palm muted compared to the EMGtv one (that's might just be situational though).

      That's a pretty narrow comment seeing that most of Brownes early videos conceptualising these riffs and recording were made possible by both Dimarzio and EMG.
      The sound that you love from those albums were created with such gear.
      Browne as commented saying that he likes many pickups, but for the more modern songs bareknuckle have been important for cutting through with the more concentrated highs and controlled lows.
      So to say that it is better just denounces your interest in their gear.
      He wouldn't endorse a company if he didn't believe it would credit and attribute to his sound.
      Get off the EMG hate wagon and try and find a opinion of your own.
      Peace.

      I like the dryer sound of the Ironheart in the EMG TV videos than I do in the MESA videos, but that's mostly down to preference and how I dial tones in. The tone in this video is arguably "better", but that dry-as-the-Sahara tone is real OG MONUMENTS.

      +Michael Beltran understandable. Rectos have a steep learning curve when it comes to eq. But when you get it right , oh my. I find the mark amps a little nasal. Reckon I may ditch my Framus Cobra for a Recto at some stage.

      Hey ***** - The 2x12 Recto cab is an EXCELLENT choice for rock. Its design is basically the bottom half of a Recto 4x12 cab, so it carries great low end support and overall frequency range balance. If you're not able to haul a 4x12 around, the 2x12 Recto is THE next best thing. Highly recommended! :)

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ***** - The Roadster 2x12 is slightly smaller and therefore offers *slightly* less bass that some would perceive as tighter bass due to less resonant space in the cab. This is the most noticeable difference between the two but doesn't really make one better or worse than another for any given style - just different flavors. The difference is probably between 3-4% between the two - just in the bass. Most people get a Roadster 2x12 to match perfectly (aesthetically) with a Roadster head - OR - they like the slightly smaller footprint & couple of pounds less weight, AND/OR the tighter bass. Keep in mind, the overall amount of bass is mostly controlled by the bass knob on your amp and your overall sound, BUT - since everything affects everything, a little less bass response affects your overall sound. Hope this helps and thanks for your interest!

      MESA/Boogie while were talking to the design team... for the love of God can we get a setting on a recto that does what an OD does to tighten the tone.... just one switch... on the red channel.... for those who WANT this tight thump attack... the added gain of the op amp helps too... ive also experimented with cutting 12dB of 30-125Hz out of the front end and cutting 8-12dB out of 250hz. I find the attack trightens up and the preamp gain can go as high as 3oclock. Someone at Boogie ... go to the tone lounge with a 2ch, an old 3ch and a Reborn... plug into a recto 4x12 and just try this...i love your amps... a few more tweaks and youll have players come back from a lot of other companies if you have what they need
      ... KILL ON CONTACT BOTTOM END!!!

    • @sixtyfiveofive2524
      @sixtyfiveofive2524 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ....few more details.....i have a 2001 DR 3ch. Boogie 6l6 and pre's. Red modern. Similar settings to johns. I've experimented with an MXR M109 6band in the input with good results.... but the best result when using a EQ to boost was an MXR KFK1 (or M108) due to the added input gain. Either way the input bass attenuation allows the bass pot to be set between noon and three with no flab. And allows gain pot on Red Modern to be almost maxed out... the added gain slider on the ten band EQ tames the gain yet allows full harmonic saturation. Some one try it and let me know..... im willing to talk anyone through this setup if i lost amyone.... cheers

    This is another great example of the tone I am looking for. I have a Mesa boogie dual rectifier as well and I want that really crisp chunky tone he has and John has in the other video. I love my Mesa believe me, I know they are using some sort of pedals to get this sound. Is he even using any pedals on this? because my Mesa sounds nothing like that with those settings.

      HiJason Nolet - Congratulations on your new Dual Rectifier! Glad to hear you're enjoying
      it. Regarding getting a tighter sound, the first thing we would
      recommend is noting where John Browne has the gain set in this video -
      fairly low. This is because the higher the gain is set, the more the low
      end and bass frequencies 'bloom'. If you want more gain but still want a
      tight response, turn the bass control down - don't listen with your
      eyes, listen with your ears. (In fact, don't even look at where the
      controls are set - turn the knob until you get the sound you want... :).
      Also, the louder your set the amp (Master), you'll perceive the bass as
      increasing in percentage amount compared to mids and highs and
      saturation/distortion. If you want the amp really loud, AND you want
      more gain, you might turn the bass down particularly low to compensate
      for all the different relationships that are happening in the amp. Just
      spending time with the controls will help you find the sweet spots for
      different styles - it's a very powerful piece of gear. Finally, it helps
      to have ridiculous technique like John Browne if you want to have this
      tight of response like his downpicking skills delivers... ;) Hope this
      helps and thanks for watching!

      Jason Nolet - Couple of things to note - John Browne's technique is world class and this is a big part of where the tone comes from. Second, he did have his signature JB Overdrive on in this video, set as lots of guys in modern metal set an OD to tighten the bass. That said, his overdrive settings are NOT what makes the tone in this video! Second, keep in mind that there are the original guitar tracks on this video which are mixed lower in this video but help to create a thick, double tracked effect in the video which you can only get... if you double track. Finally, learn how to pick like JB and you will sound great no matter what you play through. Hope this helps!

      MESA/Boogie Thank you so much for all the responses, I could not be happier with my purchase. I wrote quite a message in the other video so I just want to say thank you.
      Note, I did take into account when you overdub guitars like in the video you get a fuller, fatter, and just overall awesome sound. I record myself as well, and so far not any other amp has come close as this amp has to the tone I am searching for.
      I will take everything you just told me into account and work with the settings some more. Thank you again for the responses!

    Great tone! Can you get a similar tone out a throttle box eq?

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HiCirej DC - Thanks for the kind words. The Throttle Box sounds great but a pedal will never sound quite like an amp & 2x12 closed back cabinet. The Throttle Box does some great high gain sounds so if you have a small practice amp that doesn't offer a lot of good high gain, the Throttle Box will be a great addition. Thanks for watching!

    Hi! Love this sound! Have dual at home and thought I would give the settings a try. But I din´t understand the settings. I have read the comments and on one comment you say it is in the step of 10 and on another comment you say it was in the face of a clock. In face of a clock I guess 6 o clock is the knob at max. So is it in step of 10 or the clock? Best regards

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi +Anders Fogelqvist - The settings as listed in the video's description are based on 1 - 10. So, 4.5 on the Gain control is just slightly below halfway up. Or, opn a clock face, just below 12:00 (straight up). Hope this helps and thanks for watching! :D

    It needs to be about the size of your 212 vertical cab, and more than the mini and still a real rectifier! With a nice clean and a sick dirt channel. Usable as a real gigging amp! Use the roadster look. Call it a speedster!

    They seem rather light, but that Ab looks tight af

    • @Mel105CA
      @Mel105CA 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mason Stanley 10-59 for the stuff in Bb, 11-64 for the stuff in Ab and a 74 for F#/F. In this case it'd be 10--13-17-26-36-46-64.
      Part of the reason it looks so tight is because of the little bend/vibratos he does on some notes. Blink and you'd miss it sometimes, and he picks hard enough that he can probably afford to tune the Ab down a few cents so that when it goes sharp on the open notes he can compensate.
      Of course I could be -completely- wrong, but that's what I do.

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to beat the RectifierMarco Sorto, although the Mark V is also killer for modern high gain sounds, although it might take an extra minute or two to find YOUR sound. The graphic EQ on the Mark V really makes it though, especially for extended range and lower tunings. Can't go wrong with either of these for modern sounds.

    • @marcosorto8723
      @marcosorto8723 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MESA/Boogie thanks for the reply I think I'm gonna get the Mark V :) I tried it sounds pretty badass

    • @alexwright1464
      @alexwright1464 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marco Sorto Great choice, but it may take you more than "an extra minute or two" to find your sound, especially if you have never owned a Mesa with the graphic EQ before. The Mark V is a tone perfectionist's dream, simply because you can tweak to your heart's content. That being said, it can take you weeks (if not months) to really understand the ins-and-outs of the amp. That being said, if you stick to it, you will get a sound that will sound bigger, thicker, and fuller than anyone else's. Watch John Petrucci's playthrough of the amp on this channel to help you learn how to set it up. He does a phenomenal job explaining the ins and outs of the Mark V. Also, if money becomes a problem, look at the Dual Caliber series. You can easily find them for under $700 used (US dollars), and they sound very much like a Mark IV, but with a little touch of rectifier fizzyness. That is my amp, and I love it.

      +chino Mndza Four tunings, depending on the song. This particular one uses Ab-F-Bb-Eb-F-Bb-Eb. (it's a variant of DADGAD tuning if I remember correctly with the D dropped a full step and an extra string on top).
