- Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts, or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.
Rarer still are the movies that, while they're shooting, seem like disasters in the making but wind up being classics. This week's movie - TOMBSTONE - is one such film. After losing their original director and being faced with a massively-budgeted competitor in the guise of Kevin Costner's WYATT EARP, TOMBSTONE went on to become one of the greatest westerns of its era and the definite Wyatt Earp film for many. Despite the messy production, Tombstone remains one of my all time favorite Westerns. Hats Off to Kurt Russell and the cast and crew!

I concur. Val killed his role. I couldn’t watch Wyatt Earp with Costner and Quaid. I fear I’ll never be able to watch another movie portraying Doc. Holiday. But I have to ask, wtf happened to Val Kilmer? He should’ve been the most wanted actor after that performance.
1 Hit’a He’s had his roles here and there. I thought he was really good in Felon. But it happens a lot, look at Cuba Gooding Jr in Men of Honor, after that nothing comes close. Just some actors are born to play a certain role, and Vals was Doc.

So basically, Kurt Russell did the exact opposite of what Costner wanted when it came to screen time and character, and was infinitely more successful...interesting
Costner has been lucky, on many occasions. While slightly better than a mediocre actor, like most individuals riding the fence, he, more often than not, fell victim to his industry's equivalent of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Russell has the one thing that Hollywood is sorely lacking: true grit. He will beat you with it, every time.
Costner's always been in it for the spotlight. Russel's in it to make a movie. A very clear difference between the actors. Both have put out some great films, no question, but I tend to hear better things about working with Russel and not so great things about working with Costner.
Costner did really well with "Open Range". The gunfight in that one was awesome and Annette Benning had a subtle sexiness in that movie that was very attractive.
Costner is a little bitch. End of story.
The video stated Costner wanted Tombstone to focus on Wyatt Earp, in other words have the movie revolve around Kevin Costner, with excessive face time.

The cast of Tombstone was beyond reproach. The finest ensemble of actors that hasn't been approached since.

I would have enjoyed perhaps a little more story. But I do love the movie. My biggest disappointment was when they attacked Virgil and Morgan. In the movie it looks like happened back to back, but in fact was months apart.
Roberto Acosta Josey Wales is a masterpiece, but it’s more a Civil War/Reconstruction movie.
You should try watching another western, before proclaiming this.
Sorry jack , there are so many better westerns than tombstone, stagecoach , my darling clementine, high noon, Shane, the searchers, broken arrow and 310 to Yuma ( the original) just to name a few. Even wyatt earp with coster is better . I like tombstone but it is overrated.
@@randyacuna3248 Nobody said it was the best, it’s just perfect. The Searchers is the best and my favorite, but it transcends genre. It’s an epic film. Homeric, if you will.

Michael Biehn and Val Kilmer are what make this movie, for me. Everything else is very good, but they're the standouts.
Biehn wanted to be Holliday. Still had immense respect for Kilmer unlike a lot of people who've worked with him, and put himself 100% into Ringo to make one of cinema's great rivalries.

Despite everything, I do so love "Tombstone" and still wonder why Val Kilmer didn't get even an Oscar Nomination in '93. No one could've done that role better!
Right? I can't even imagine Willem Defoe in that role. Not disregarding the rest of the fantastic cast, but Val Kilmer carried much of the movie. I don't think it would have been as successful without him.

Everybody forgets Stephen Lang. That guy is killing it with stylish little B-movies these days. Catch him in VFW and Don't Breathe. Those are fun. Underrated though? Tombstone isn't underrated. It's comfortably a classic in its own right. Michael Biehn is underrated however, and because the industry has treated him like shit.

Dam that's crazy that the movie is almost 30 years old i remember my family use to watch this movie all the time when it came out and watched it for years after i can say all the lines ti the movie when watching it because i watched it so much love this movie
The longer extended cut (vs the theatrical cut) of Tombstone is the best version of the film hands down in my view...

Agreed. I can't stand the Costner one. It just falls flat, in comparison AND on it's own merits. Kevin Costner has almost always been flat and unappealing. It's ironic that the only movie I actually liked his performance in was also one of his less successful films,, "Mr. Brooks"
@@WhatsReallyGoingOn84 It's one Of those rare directors cuts that fits together so well people forget that it's the version that came after the original when they're watching it on TV. Which means there's a good possibility think you've actually seen it and just assumed, or forgotten, that it was the director's cut.

My favorite western with a flawless cast, Val does the role of his life.
The cast, man. That cast was so good. Even the background characters had memorable character development.
With that opening sequence alone, you knew you were in for something special with Tombstone.
Extra little fact: Wyatt Earp worked, as what would now be called a technical consultant, on many of the first silent Westerns. He would be a regular visitor on the sets of John Ford's movies, and even met and befriended a young Marion Morrison, who would later call himself John Wayne. Wayne later said that he based his walk and talk off of Earp.
I would love to see it the way it was originally written. If Sam Elliott said he wouldn’t have done it if he knew the way it was going to come out and it’s this good already….could you imagine?!?!?!?

Yes perfect cast, but directed by George P Cosmatos.
Dang someone who knows! George and Russel had a deal that till the point of Georges death he would take responsibility for directing when in fact Russel did most of the directing of the film
Cosmatos did the technical direction, while Kurt Russel did the personal instruction. There is a difference. I.e. Russel was the one that made the actors actually act and perform in their roles, while Cosmatos was responsible for the actual filming of it.
Yes, thank you Kurt Russell! Tombstone's definitely in my ALL TIME top 10. Be great to see a Kurt Russell Cut of the movie. Add all of Kurt's cut scenes back in.
My favourite western of all time. I've watched a lot, I'm a 70's child!
The performances in this were phenomenal and the story is simple yet captivating.
I’ve honestly never seen Costner’s movie on tv and I don’t think I’ve ever seen the whole movie all the way through. Tombstone is on all the time. The casting is perfect. The costumes are perfect. The writing is perfect. Karma is real.
This “what happened” nonsense doesn’t detract from the fact that Tombstone remains the gold standard of telling a powerful western story in film entertainment.
Easy there, cowboy. The title doesn't seem to intentionally defer negativity on the film as a whole.
It's just a bit of a trick. A little offence reels in more views and comments. This film has pure love regardless.

Your comment is so contrived. That being said, I still gave it a "thumbs up" vote.
As noted, the Costner production tried to buy or rent all the Western gear and costumes. This just caused the Tombstone people to be more creative. The Old West re-enactors, who had their own gear, also helped tremendously. One thing I love. People make the mistake of judging Old West clothing and even hair styles by the sepia tint photographs of the era. Clothes were often more colorful. You just didn't have color photography. Tombstone got this right. Also, people got their hair especially slicked back for formal photographs. This did not always match how they wore their hair in real life.
Costner's biggest mistakes were trying to make another "Dances With Wolves," as well as compete with a more star studded, straight to the point, O.K. Corral extravaganza, that came out first, which dimmed the light on "Wyatt Earp."
However, Costner's film had significant more historical, extensive, and accurate detail when it came to the real life of Wyatt Earp. This was another contributor to the length of "Wyatt Earp;" the film was about more than just what happened in Tombstone, AZ.

Side story about Wyatt Earp: Later in his life he worked in Hollywood as an unpaid studio consultant. One day while sitting in the studio commissary drinking coffee he met a young man working a summer job as set mover. That young man was Marion Robert Morrison......better known as John Wayne.
I've legitimately seen this movie over a hundred times and thanks to the TH-cam algorithm I'm going to watch it again.
Cool story. I never knew Kurt Russell had such a major part to play in the making of one of my favorite movies.
Tombstone is perfect in my opinion...glad everything worked out the way it did. One of my all time top 10 favorites. Wouldn’t change a thing about this movie. I grew up seeing this at least a 100 times....still never gets old. Thank you Kurt Russell
Nothing. It's the best, most underrated Western ever made. It's become a real cult classic. Anyone with common sense can see and appreciate how great Tombstone is.

I love Costner but I can’t imagine him in this movie, Tombstone is one of my favorite films! Another favorite is Open Range with Costner and Robert Duvall! Duvall always seems to compliment a western. Thank you for posting. (RIP: Paxton and Boothe)

Cash listened to Tango and got Cosmatos to get the job done. Not the first time that an actor played producer to wrap up the film. First blood to Tombstone, way to go man.
Actually the thought of William Dafoe as Doc Holiday is a performance I would have loved to see (though not at the cost of missing Val kilmer’s)
He probably would have infused more life into the Costner movie, but he probably wouldn't have been the right fit to work alongside Russell, perhaps cancelling out each others' performances. Chemistry is everything whenever a script is less than stellar. And this script had its fair-share of weaknesses.

Absolutely one of my favourite western's ever. All the cast were great, and the R rating gave it a real edge. Kilmer just nailed it as Doc.
Tombstone is my favorite movie, and all the drama behind the scenes only makes it better...

Kurt Russell is a class act. Val Kilmer’s work in this film is on par with Pacino in The God Father and DeNiro in Taxi Driver.
One of the best movies from the 90s. I watched Wyatt Earp once, but I viewed this film dozens of times.

Holy shit that was Michael Rooker? I've seen this movie at least over a dozen times and I never noticed Rooker.
I noticed Rooker easily because of "Mallrats." Ironically, it was Jason Priestly that I missed up until I watched this video. (The irony being, of course, Shannon Doherty starring in "Mallrats." Two films, two stars of "90210," one Michael Rooker.)
Yea he played Sherman McMasters the former Cowboy who joined up with Wyatt Earp and he was in Cliffhanger with Sylvester Stallone the same year Tombstone was released in 93.

Everything about Tombstone is absolutely amazing. Top notch acting across the board, exciting plot, lots of great characters and a very authentic old west feel. They pulled off a miracle when making it and came out with a masterpiece in cinema.
This is one of the few films I went to see twice at the cinema. Absolutely love it.
Its heartbreaking to see the state of Val Kilmer now...but every time I watch Tombstone, you see the radiant, vibrant person he was. "I have not yet begun to defile myself", the cup scene, the way he seduced the Cowboys into gunfights...a bravura performance. Playing a dentist (who was reputedly better on the trigger) who passed away in a Denver Hospital in the 20th Century, a character so close to the modern era its exhilarating to think such a character existed.
Everyone I know that has seen this movie has nothing but praise for it. What a great film and easily one of my top five westerns!

This was one of the longest movies that I enjoyed. I wish Doc and Ringo had more interaction though, they were gold.
Tombstone is such a superior film to Wyatt Earp in every way....how ironical.
I remember back then my older brother and his friends were going to see a movie and I asked to tag along. During the 20 minute drive I asked what it was we were going to watch. They said Tombstone. Disappointingly I asked "isnt that a western?". But instantly it became one of my favorite all time. Top 5 for me. The very next day I took my then girlfriend now wife to watch it. I've easily watched it over 20 times and we watch it in my household every year on my birthday.

@Dennis Mitchell funny you should mention that; Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp didn't have a mustache either, another show of the "Wyatt Earp" film's closer attention to historical accuracy.
Sky Den No, but only because I thought a ferret would be _so_ much more realistic. Over time, I’ve gotten used to having no upper lip, but I still miss my girlfriend’s ferret. In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have used that god-damned stapler. So it goes.

Kurt Russel is amazing man.i really would’ve wanted to see how Tombstone developed if those scenes weren’t cut though 😕 I can genuinely say that was the movie that got me into the western genre. My dad watched it almost every day on VHS 😌
Unforgiven and this movie are hands down the best western of the 90s. And the extended cut is far superior to the theatrical version.
Though I have difficulty putting this movie and Unforgiven in any sort of comparison, I agree with the overall gist of your statement. Though wildly distinct in caliber, they were the best westerns of the 90's. Unforgiven, however, was a masterpiece. Apples and oranges, really.
I don't have any idea why it took so long, but today I became a subscriber. This movie is one of my favorite post-era westerns, with stellar moments interspersed, throughout. But it wasn't without its clunkers - mostly due to certain individuals "hamming it up."
It's amazing that with all the dysfunction throughout production this film turned out to be a masterpiece. Much deserved credit to Kurt Russel as a true leader. This film is one of my top 3 Westerns of all time.
The casting of so many great actors made this move completely awesome. Kurt never acted more profound; Val Kilmer was at the tip of the sword. Michael Biehn was the best (crazy)Johnny Ringo, Powers Booth as Curly is such an excellent actor. All of them that made up the cast are academy award winners, imo. Best top 10 cowboy movie out there. "Where's Wyat?" "Oh, he's down by the creek walking on water".
Nothing happened other than a great western movie was created that was well written, well acted and just a whole lot of fun!

For Christmas in 1995 my parents bought me a VCR along with Batman Forever and Tombstone. I watched this movie so many times and I still love it.
I saw it as a kid and didn't understand. I watched it like a year ago. One of best movies ever, amazing cast, great dialogue. Val Kilmer as Doc was perfect.

The "deleted scenes" total only something like four or five minutes, but there must be a lot more footage somewhere. I'd love to see all of it, even if those scenes aren't complete.

As a non western fan tombstone and the young guns movies are my favorite western movie. If they r on tv no matter how far into the novie i will watch it. Also i enjoyed appaloosa with vigo mortensen and ed harris not as rewatchable as tombstone or young guns but i liked it.

Even to this day I still think there is NO OTHER ACTOR IN EXISTENCE that has matched Val Kilmers performance.

I know many of the cast and crew. They all feel Kurt definitely made many personal sacrifices for the benefit of everyone else. A very special guy--!!!

What gives this film it's unconscious appeal is it's use of period correct clothing and slang vocabulary! Even though it only rains on one half of Tombstone in the film, it's still epic!
