After the success of Touchstone Pictures, the Walt Disney Company expanded further into the adult-oriented film market with the creation of Hollywood Pictures in 1989. The label produced some huge hits for the company, but was dissolved with little explanation in the 2000s. In this video, we explore the history of Hollywood Pictures, and why, despite releasing one of Disney's biggest hits ever, the film label was put to rest in 2007.

I want more video's like this one 👍
Well you have come to the right place
RIP
Hollywood Pictures
(1989-2007)
I see dead studios
Dude I 💕💕💕💕💕 love these studio docs and I find them so interesting. Keep them coming!
“Blood In Blood Out” may have been a flop when it was released but over 30 years later it is still a cult classic in the Latino community, especially here in Los Angeles.
Miklo's loc shades in prison has been a profile pic for generations 😂
That Hollywood Pictures line-up is quite full of cult classics. "Arachnaphobia" and "Grosse Point Blank" are also cult classics.
The advice to not rely on "high cost, high risk projects" is something that modern Disney def needs to do.
Quiz Show is simply one of the best films of the 90’s. A rare movie in which there isn’t one wasted scene
None wasted, some not very good.
Quiz show was awful
My friends and I once won a game of Scattegories by naming Quiz Show as our movie, when given the letter Q.
My backup was Quetzcoatl: the Winged Serpent from 1982.
Hollywood Pictures could have been Disney's genre label for horror and thriller. I mean, yes they had Dimension Films as well but Disney had Miramax operate autonomously outside of the company.
God, I miss this era of mid-budget movies so much
I do as well. And I just miss when more movies were put out overall.
Don't Forget Hollywood Pictures Was Behind the Chicano community phenomenon Blood In Blood Out that's been embraced by all races and cultures like Sega to Segata Sanshiro or Canon Film Group To Breakin' I've made these Phenomena my own and It worked out for the best
Because everyone wants to pretend they are a gangster 😂
That's crazy Disney shot themselves in the foot and sold off the worldwide distribution rights for The Sixth Sense because they had no confidence in it.
I remember when that came out when I was in high school. It was such a massive phenomenon. Everyone was talking about the twist. Shame that the studio responsible for it didn't get to reap the benefits.
It’s because it was selling power rangers back to Saban and then buying Marvel at the time.
Disney never should've gotten involved with that franchise and never should have done business with a crook like Haim Saban. The only reason they did is to get back at Barry Diller over what station *DuckTales* was on in LA.
I love that movie. I just watched it again the other day.
@13:36 Fred Fuchs? THE Fred Fuchs?
I cannot think of a single bigger publicity nightmare for Disney than if Disney went ahead and bought American International and suddenly Disney would have owned the rights to Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic at the height of the "Family Values" movement in the 1980s, considering the fuss the American Family Association made over the Mighty Mouse revival on CBS being overseen by Ralph Bakshi, the director of Fritz the Cat.
Lol that would have been crazy! It wasn't actually Disney that was considering buying AIP, but rather Michael Eisner himself when he was still running Paramount (apparently he was being pushed out of Paramount, and was trying to plot his next move, according to James B. Stewart's DisneyWar). He ended up being hired by Disney shortly thereafter, and the rest is history. But imagine if Eisner had taken over AIP instead! Maybe we'd all be wearing Fritz ears and watching videos about defunct attractions at Bakshiland
Considering the lawsuit *Cooley High* screenwriter Eric Monte filed over matters related to the TV series *What's Happening!!* that was loosely based on it also implicated Eisner during his time at ABC, that would have given Paramount the rights to that movie instead of it now being owned by MGM and by proxy Amazon.
It also would've given Paramount the rights to a bunch of Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon beach party movies from the 1960s, movies that culminated in the post-Eisner Paramount release *Back to the Beach.*
Imagine Roger Corman, Disney Legend. Also, all the AIP Poe adaptations.
13:35 FRED FUCHS!!!!!!
I saw The Invisible in theaters back in 2007 which eventually was the last film from Hollywood Pictures after Disney decided to defunct it. At the time, they brought Pixar and were rebranding their labels retiring the Buena Vista name.
To the Studio that brought us The ORIGINAL Super Mario Bros. Live Action Movie
or "Super Marios Bros. '93" as it seems to be referred to now
R.I.P.
I'm fascinated by the failures of Hollywood studios. Can you do Carlco and Orion next? Seriously i love this stuff.
Pretty Woman, the Hand that rocks the cradle, the ref, dangerous minds and GI Jane are Disney movies.
Just a fun fact, the distinguished gentleman was Murphy’s first movie not released by Paramount
7:37 Disney needs to heed this advice for its streaming division.
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING
And now a days, Disney is mostly a conglomerate that just buys out studios, takes over all the titles and shells out sequels-galore with barely any originality.
Exactly!! It’s sad.
Damn good video.
I love these videos. Don’t just do ‘death of’. Do histories of some of these smaller studios like Morgan Creek.
Great video! I like learning about Disney’s distribution labels. Keep it up! Your Touchstone video was great as well! 🙂
Did anyone else see the Fred Fuchs jumpscare at 13:34?
yes
The sphinx that stinks.
was this an actual label people gave for them? hilarious regardless
The super Mario Bros movie when I think of Hollywood pictures
12:11 the only movie I’ve seen of their catalog is super Mario bros lol
For the record, Blood in Blood out has developed a huge cult following in the Latino community. Still waiting for Disney to open the vault and release the 5 hour cut of that movie.
Laughs in *Bedknobs and Broomsticks.*
Rebecca De Mornay was SO good in Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Now Maika Monroe of Longlegs will play her part in the remake!
Great history of a fun studio brand.
This is exactly the kind of studio we need today.
They should bring it back even if it's still Disney!
Wow, I get a 2nd chance in the same week to whine about the fact that Quiz Show still hasn't gotten a blu-ray release.
Your videos are very very good 👍😊
Here is my submission to feed the algorithm: I love your channel name. It is incredibly witty.
So studio executive dies in a helicopter crash, studio produces a movie with a guy getting detonated in a helicopter? 28:02 🤔
what’s left ah yes dimension/miramax which later was bought by paramount
So?
Touchstone Pictures had the best live-action films for adults in the 80s and 90s.
Hollywood Pictures, on the other hand, was Disney’s third division company.
You forgot Caravan Pictures the Studio behind Inspector Gadget
@@anikamathur02
Who asked you? Michael Eisner?!
Who cares about caravan pictures?
That production company was filed for bankruptcy.
quality work, bruv
Thank You so much for making this video on My request I hope the next video you make for is carolco and Geffen pictures
Pauly shore was actually on MTV before Encino man.
Can anyone say what exactly the difference between Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures was? Disney didn't need another studio for adult themed live action. I always thought it was some weird tax loophole or something.
It was so they could start another string of partnerships called "Touchwood" to raise money for them after the last of the Silver Screen Partnerships ended.
This is an outstanding video my friend. Huge fan of your work.
Channel Surfer, your videos are the best.
very very well put together video
Channel Serfer Your videos are always a treat to watch.
Your channel comeback has been awesome!
20:56 imagine they made a remake of the rock with the rock
Another great video!
Right on!
Great video. What's the name of the song at the end? Is it on youtube?
Kudos for the phenomenal level of detail
WHY WHY WHY is Dick Tracy not on Disney+ Like Come On Man Joe Biden is waiting as well the rest of us old timers.
I believe it's because Disney no longer owns the rights to the movie cause I believe they sold it, I think it was sold to Warren Beaty if I'm correct.
Either that or because there's legal issues since the rights to the character are just as confusing as the rights to the Disney cartoon; Clerks the animated series.
Which is why I don’t believe that Mandela 🐂 💩
Now do one on Artisan Entertainment
Great summary, very interesting
When I first saw the logo and label Hollywood Pictures, I thought how generic is that since technically most American movies are out of Hollywood. But they served out some great films like The Rock, Crimson Tide, While You Were Sleeping, and Mr Holland's Opus.
Hollywood pictures released some of the best film of the late 90s The Rock, The Sixth Sense. I miss them
This movie studio is the one that did the very inaccurate movie nothing like The Super Mario Bros franchise at all! But luckily Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment made a way better animated Super Mario Bros Movie that many people liked including me!
The only movie I remember Hollywood pictures releasing was Hellraiser Bloodlines. So basically Disney released a Hellraiser movie.
Subscribed ❤
Katzenberg was really ahead of the curve on trying to warn Disney not to over-rely on expensive blockbusters 😮💨😮💨
And Touchstone died too. But, we have Marvel Studios now. Better quality content, more advertising, more sponsorship.
I'm one of the few people that actually enjoys Super Mario Bros. and Judge Dredd.
Powder, The Wrong Guy, and Simon Birch are extremely underrated.
The Rock and The Sixth Sense still hold up really well.
The only reason I know who this production company is is because of that Mario movie
Had the same reaction as Jim Belushi when I saw that clip from taking care of business @6:51 smh it activated the caveman part of my brain. I was so productive the whole day, now I’m about to submit to my lustful desires
God only knows the inside baseball of being a movie executive in control of 100s of millions of dollars. Everybody’s gotta be coming for your job. Swimming with sharks indeed
With Touchstone also folding up, Disney has pretty much made the acquired 20th Century Studios and FX their new older-oriented media studios. Whether that’s proven to be a good thing or not remains to be seen.
I actually watched The Hand That Rocks The Cradle a month ago and Encino Man a month earlier AND watched The Sixth Sense a year ago! I get the hype now!
I swear I saw this documentary months ago. Am I crazy? Or is this a re-upload after a copyright strike/dispute?
It's sad cause I loved Disney & it's 2D Animation growing up in the 90's. Now it's unrecognizable & it's monopolized many things. These current people have shown how out of touch they are. A lot of them seem to only be capable of writing narcissistic stories that self insert themselves and their own beliefs into anything they do. Even if they get to make something from a pre-existing beloved story, they cannot help themselves. They seem to be incapable of creating artistic creations that stray away from their own personal perspective, instead of showing they can lean heavily into escapism and pure storytelling.. They have proven time and time again that they are not capable of doing anything even remotely close to that.. (which is weird because that should be one of the most important attributes that a director or a developer or an actor has in order to be successful at their job....?)
How is there no one that will fire these people who seem like they openly dislike the fans, who seem to disrespect the consumers that were the ones who made their success in the first place..
There's now people like Kathleen Kennedy, She's a Perfect example of this awful trend where people keep getting these positions when they in no way deserve those positions. They are not hired based off talent or skill..? So we are seeing very expensive shows, movies, all so terribly designed, terribly managed, Awful writing, world design, character development, poor aesthetics. So much now feels creatively bankrupt and I really hope we all snap the heck out of it and get back to making better things.
The new Acolyte show comes off so cheap & tacky.. It's not just the terrible writing & terrible acting. The whole thing is a complete self centered power trip.. It's horrible set design, horrible world building, horrible camera work. It all makes this show feel so small. Like it's filmed in a single green screen room.. Grasping at awful CGI techniques to try and force any bit of a false reality into this mess of a show.
It's so far from Legitimate Star wars movies that it feels as if this whole thing is a big parody.. A very expensive parody..
Now Compare the "The Acolyte" as If you go back & watch "X-Men the Animated series" It was so well crafted. The story of the struggles of mutants having to deal with humanity was such a universally relatable storyline. Media back then was not afraid to face difficult topics head on. They found really unique ways to abstractly teach people life lessons. They touched on difficult situations & found intelligent ways to convey certain stories. Even when I was all grown up & rewatched it, it really felt like the story is crafted so well & executed at such a high level that anyone is capable of relating to it in someway or another. It's stuff like that, that we are deeply lacking nowadays. So much so that literal kid's cartoons from the 90's told deeper and more mature stories than most media nowadays.
Stuff used to take pride in who can find the most creative ways to convey certain things. Who can give the audience certain feelings without overly explaining it.
It used to not matter what kind of character, creature, species they were. What matters is that they found ways to convey artistic depictions of the Human condition. Creative ways that can connect us on a deeper level.
I think you give past media a little too much credit. If the X-Men animated series came out today (not counting the ‘97 revival series), you know people would be accusing it of not being “proper escapism” and spreading the whole “woke agenda” that they’re obsessed with bitching about on the algorithm. It’s the society we now occupy, unfortunately.
common mistake at around 10:40 haha "de-thawed" means frozen. It's either thawed, or defrosted. To de-thaw is to refreeze.
I live in Kew Gardens Hills. I've been to that theater so many times. 3:23. You in Queens?
Yay! Rip
Hollywood pictures were the really old ones. Like early 90s. Reality Bites, etc...
Nothing will ever be the same after its time has passed… we only have our memories now or uploads of archived footage.
There still making film in Hollywood... *shot dead*
Hollywood Pictures: If it’s the Sphinx, it stinks!
homie you have got to give a warning for all that Arachnophobia stuff
7:37 this was one of the major inspirations for Cameron Crowe’s 1996 classic Jerry Maguire.
Awesome!
The sponsor 14 minutes in is diabolical.
The Air Up There 😂 i forgot all about that movie haha
Blood in blood out is my favorite Disney movie
Like this doc hope you do Carolco next
Vatos locos forever!! (Iykyk) 🔥
14:22 Yikes thats some competition right there
Quiz Show was a great film! It might be the best one Hollywood Pictures put out! Put John Turturro on map for awhile.
He was already on the map because of *Do the Right Thing.*
Blood in blood out is a Disney movie🤔
0:09 Oof, right in the feels dude 😅
blood in blood out wasnt a flop bro
5:49 RIP Julian Sands 🙏
How about Troma Entertainment (1974-???)
Great idea
24:27 Cue "not like us"
12 films a year sounds like an unrealistically high amount
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made a movie a week at its peak.
Clikbeait fruk
Fred Fuchs!
Don't sell out for trampolines. Just Saiyan...
At least it's promoting exercise instead of carbohydrate consumption.
@@Attmay That is an extremely low bar. Mind you I love this channel but I feel he should have waited for a better sponsor. Then again I'm not in his shoes so there is that.
@@SonCarlosH promoting a product that promotes good health versus promoting a product that promotes poor health. There is a world of difference between promoting a miniature trampoline and being a sugar shill.
Never heard about Hollywood Pictures till today
