Both. You need both in your studio. I would split the budget and get a brand new laptop and a refurbished desktop or vice-versa. The laptop gives you portability and with modern audio interfaces, latency is no longer an issue and nothing beats taking your entire DAW into the car to tweak it for that all important 'car test'. A desktop is great because of all the reasons you have mentioned. You can get a really good laptop for $250 AUD which would handle MOST of your mixes, if not all, as long as you're sensible and freeze synths and cpu hungry plugins.
Valid points, I've gone through about 3 laptops in the last 5 years but my 10-year-old studio desktop is only just now starting to act up a bit because the processor is outdated.

By the way you need to be careful with 'insulation' inside the PC chassis or locking it away in a cupboard. Overheating can breed FIRE! so be careful.
