    Activated bluetooth can also cause problems on a daw like crackling sound. I solved the issue on my hp pavilion (ryzen 5, 16 GB ram, 500 GB SSD) by turning off the bluetooth module after I took over the power settings as you advised. Both Reaper and amplitube 5 max run like a charm now. But for me the last push in the right direction was turning off bluetooth. Hope this helps others, thanks for your videos on the subject. Grtz from NL, Leo

    This is absolutely phenomenal. It has completely transformed my computer into a beast. I've had this computer for 10 years, and it was really great when I bought it, but I had no idea how great it could be. This is essential information for anyone making music with their computers. Thank you so much!!

    I appreciate the tips, I just switched from Mac to PC, I’ve been using Macs for Music production and sound design since 2007 but just recently I had a MacBook Pro that just randomly stopped working and needed the entire logic board replaced, I decided to just buy a new computer instead but for the cost of an M2 Max or M3 max i could get a hell of a lot more in a PC, I decided to pull the trigger on a beastly Windows laptop and as a bonus I can use it for gaming but I’ve been away from windows for music production so long I wasn’t really sure how to get things as stable as possible. I’m really hoping I didn’t make a massive mistake going to back to windows though

      There's no good platform, ,since it's all the same corrupt company behind it either way. PCs are crap, and I can't imagine Macs could be any worse.

      You are right. You want to select PROGRAMS- NOT Background Services. Your hunch was correct. See Nayah9 coment below. Everyone AGREED with him.
      "Do NOT change processor scheduling to "Background services". This setting is mainly aimed at server PCs. DAWs are a foreground process, as are ASIO drivers.
      As long as you don't run junk on your PC, you don't need to change any setting in Windows to make your DAW run better except maybe for the high performance power plan (in some cases).

    I've been struggling for the past month with my brother's computer (a person that is quite musically inclined but not that Tech savvy) with Pops and dropout from his Focusrite. Delving into depth of configuration that are on par or even more crazy than what I have done to some of my machines for gaming purposes (I know now the wrath of the LatencyMon red text ... and it is frightening !).
    You gave a few tips that I've yet to try. I'll give it a go next time I swing by his house.

    Hello sir... great video. Question regarding the "Set affinity" section. You say to select the "even number" processors... Am I selecting ONE even number processor or ALL THE EVEN NUMBER PROCESSORS? thank you.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I recommend choosing only one of the even numbers processors. The idea is for Windows not to move the audio process around between the cores as this can cause realtime issues. For Intel processors with performance (P) and efficiency (E) cores, choose performance cores for best performance. Hope this helps out!

    • @JedShura
      @JedShura 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@askdrtk Yeah, thanks for the tip. Seems like having only one (a single "even" processor) selected would limit the CPU ability, as it's only using one of the many cores... but I guess that's not quite the way it works?

    Do NOT change processor scheduling to "Background services". This setting is mainly aimed at server PCs. DAWs are a foreground process, as are ASIO drivers.
    As long as you don't run junk on your PC, you don't need to change any setting in Windows to make your DAW run better except maybe for the high performance power plan (in some cases).
    Now go make music. Peace.

    • @jbaranowski1990

      Exactly. And even Microsoft people said that it's not necessary and can even make DAW work slower.

      How/Why this is still a recommended optimisation for Windows today is a mystery. It could sometimes fix issues in the distant past, but not today. Best advice for PC optimisation is Pete Brown's 'Unofficial Windows 10 and 11 Audio Workstation build and tweak guide'. He actually works for Microsoft as their Principe Windows Software Engineer and a huge music/studio nerd too and knows his stuff. He also co-hosts the DAWBench Podcast so is right on the money when it comes to the hardware too for DAWs.

    • @jbaranowski1990
      @jbaranowski1990 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SamHocking Exactly. Most of the time you must just turn on the highest performance of your PC and turn off all those gebberish that run during your work as telemetry or autostart things and you are ready to go. I noticed that when I install all those new drivers, updates and make all the tweaks that people tell you on the internet, my PC just work slowly and there are more bugs than advantages. Windows PC today is really like a Mac. You just plug and play (yes, sometimes you need to install driver for your audio interface and so on but that's all). And btw. that process priority thing makes my audio glitch too. So no thanks.

    thanks for the great tips! 1 question, Ableton Live's FAQ page states "Hyper-threading is enabled by default in Live for computers with multi-core processors... Live supports up to 64 cores for audio processing on Mac and Windows. Likewise, Live supports up to 64 processing threads for audio calculation" - so for Ableton Live users, do you still recommend disabling all cores except 1 for audiodg.exe, or keep them all enabled to utilize the hyperthreading support?

    Hey, there are some new Tipps i didnt know. THX ! Im a big fan of turning off everything. Notfifications, programms that want call home, windows effects or animations and much more. When I hv a new system I turn everything of that I can. I do this with all davices, even TV, Phone ore my gaming consoles, When Something is new I go thruh every little tab of the settings and turn everything off.
    And when I do something and need a setting I turn it on. This way I hv my whole performance for my music, video or gaming and only the things on that i really need.
    Also I only hv installed music software on my producing pc and only the plug ins i need. So I dont need a high end pc.
    I dont put everything on my machine. Everything is clean and a ssd for the programs and a HDD with all project files
    I hv my pc since years and it runs still perfect. I could talk for hours about this topic lol😅
    Its first time on ur channel. Like the video and will check more of ur stuff,

      @@askdrtk actually ended up seeing interesting issue. From task manager/details when changed priority and affinity they go back to default after reboot. Also still having throtle somewhere. Clicks and pops with smaller buffer size. Before installing 11 this was running with 10 on slower ssd but way much more tracks and smaller buffer size with RME ucx card.

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To address the priority / affinity reset after reboot, there are registry changes that can be made or you can use a tool such as Process Lasso (free version is all that is required). I go through the steps to set this up in this video: th-cam.com/video/yrcASU9auwA/w-d-xo.html I would also check the individual CPU core usage to see if specifying a different core for your DAW makes a difference.
      I don't have the specs for your system, but I would be interested to know if things change if you disable your internet connection. This can be a way to track down where system resources are being used. If you do notice a change, re-enable the network connection and look for the processes accessing the network while you have a session open.

      @@askdrtk super nice to get some help actually :) thanks alot! I haven't had time to get on this problems yet. Busy with one project and boring work. I will look in to it and throw some comment here if you still see it.
      Didn't even try to turn of network yet. Disabled bunch of useless devices. And all the individual cores were only 30%-40% before clipping start. I set buffer somewhere over 2k and I got song mixed. Impossible latency for playing tho. With windows 10 I remember I had exactly same problem but optimizing setups made this machine to work very nicely with 20+ tracks and alot of plugins 128 buffer size and less than 10ms latency. This machine is i5 8600k 64gb with fast ssd and decent motherboard. Soundcard is RME ucx. Daw is Ableton Live 10 standard.
      With windows 10 I remember setting up usb power, background services as a priority and and other performance things made the job. Now it just throttle for some reason.

    Any ideas for undervolting?

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Stability is my first priority for a DAW PC, but a modest undervolt is generally ok (unless you were really unlucky in the silicone lottery) as motherboard manufacturers often set voltage over spec as an extra measure for stability at the expense of heat and throttling. In my experience, the better the ripple spec is on your power supply, the lower you can push the voltage without experiencing instability. If an overclock with a modest undervolt is stable and provides a noticeable difference in latency performance it may be worth it. Just my thoughts…

    • @banjuman
      @banjuman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@askdrtk Let me share some of my experiences.
      13700k , z690, noctua d15
      I've been used without specific cpu optimization in BIOS. Everything were perfect, except that the average(idle) temp is slightly high (around 43' c, when it comes to games or works it goes about 70 often)
      Anyway, just wanna lower the temperature as much as I can , so I tried undervolting from 12.9 to 13.1
      I could face the bluescreen until 1.31, but still 1.31, it was still not stable. Sometimes it occurs cpu spikes in ableton, which I solved by turning off the core-parking option.
      So the conclusion is, undervolting really affects the cpu performance on DAW since we need the stability while working. I will try to find the sweet spot that can handle the temp well and also can work with flawless experiences

    Hey Todd! This is very informative and thank you! Recently I have bought HP victus laptop with 7840hs AMD, 32GB DDR5 (5600MHZ) and 4050 GeForce RTX graphics card with 6gb. It should work faster than it is working. Do you have any advice?
    PS. I am using Cubase 13 pro and windows 11 btw.

    Is there an optimum setting for page file?
    Most appreciate your helpful video!

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! The answer depends on your system RAM and available physical drives. For 32bit Windows installations I recommend letting Windows manage the page file. For 64bit Windows installs here are some good starting points if you system has SSD(s):
      8GB system RAM: Page file minimum 1GB, maximum 1.5GB
      16GB system RAM: Page file minimum 1.5GB, maximum 2.5GB
      32GB system: RAM: Page file minimum 3GB, maximum 4.5GB
      Place your page file on the fastest physical drive in your system (NVME - best if you have one, SATA SSD - good performance, SATA HDD - only if you have to).
      If you have more than one NVME or SSD, you can split the page file sizes equally across the drives. Windows will use the file on the drive that responds first and for larger requirements than would fit on one of the drives, you may benefit from the shared bandwidth across the drives.
      I hope these ideas give you some ideas!

    I didn't have time to read all the comments, so I'm sorry if this has already been addressed. Were any of these tips related to "core parking" issues? That's a term I know next to nothing about, really -- but it gets tossed around frequently when audiophiles are wanting to improve computer performance (?)

    Perhaps I shouldn't ask for advice here but I'm going to try: I'm not even sure I need an Audio interface, I have happily used an M Audio Audiophile internal sound card for the last 20 years, first in a 20 year old PC then on my present build from about 10 years ago, I've just upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, and lost the software and drivers of the card in the process. I've been doing a littler research and it looks like my good old sound card is very dated. All I do is on Sibelius, DORICO, Vienna Instruments and Note Performer. All I really need is Sound quality, power to drive my Zennheiser HD 600 headphones well, lowest possible latency and no clipping. I like monitors with amps in them. Connecting an instrument or a Microphone is something I've never done, but it could be fun to do sometime maybe. Certainly not more than 1 instrument or 1 microphone. These are my two choices . MOTU M2 2x2 USB-C Audio Interface. M-Audio AIR 192x4 USB C Audio Interface. Hope you can help.
