HOW TO TURN A $1,000 MAACO PAINT JOB INTO A $3,000 PAINT JOB

  • Unhappy with my $1,000 MAACO paint job I enlisted the help of a local detailer to do some of the extra work that MAACO didn't do. I'd say it was well worth the money.
Thanks to Tony at Concorso Detailng in Plano, TX

As a detailer, most detailers dont specialize in taking care of orange peel being that it needs wet sanding. Most detailers don't wet sand unless it's for head light restoration. Finding a detailer who wet sands paint for mirror shine is like finding a tattoo artist who is amazing at portrait tattoos. All most detailers can take care of is light scratches and swirl marks etc.

I polished a used car that I bought that had previously been bargain shop painted. I wet sanded from the door moulding up with 2000, 3000, 5000 then machine/hand buffed it. I had to be careful because some parts were barely painted and the wet sand/polish ate through some of the paint. It was a single stage job but it looks much better. Any cheap paint job can look great as long as it's covered with enough paint.

The clear coat on my E92 was failing and I had Maaco repaint the hood, roof and trunk lid, I picked it up ten days ago and I'm happy with the results. I'll let the paint cure and then I'll polish and ceramic coat and see the final result. I wish that I could get my wheels refinished at $75 per wheel so I ordered a set of CSL reps from VMR to finish the car.

I too follow Hoovie, his trust of Maaco has me gravitating more to them so been checking TH-cam vids. I'm glad I found yours.
I bought my 2003 Dodge Ram quad new. Upgraded 20" wheels set it off and were uncommon then, Fords and Chevys still had 17s. The black paint looked fantastic when wash, detailed and waxed. A task I lovingly did weekly for the first year, to then just washed, waxed, detailed monthly, then finally after 5 years just washed when we bought a new black HHR as the family car (gas prices were $4 a gallon).
Like your Mercedes, my paint color is BLACK. Therein lies the problem with budget paintjobs. I am in Florida so no rust, but the finish is now 80% clearcoat damage on the roof and hood, and swirls on the panels. I am no longer in the black auto paint phase of my life, it is my work truck now, so I may opt for a white color choice. One that won't show those imperfections that deep dark colors will? (sold the HHR and our Lexus is a deep pearl white)

I bought a black Alfa spider a few years ago that had that weird texture on the hood. Yup, receipts from Maaco. I was told that they should have wet sanded it out as part of the painting process, but knowing Alfa owners, he went for the $500 job. There was also overspray on the side windows and down the side of the car. I was able to improve things alot with claybar and Grio's Garage products. Yeah, I'm still thinking Maaco this summer, but top of the line. Unless I can find somewhere else that will paint for $3500 or so...

Never make assumptions with Maaco. You have to literally type out your list of what you want done and how you want it done when you do business with them. They do excellent work when YOU tell them to do it. They can't think in their own.

Been thinking about taking my car to Maaco but im afraid of it looking grainy. I think i’d pretend like I like it and then go home and cry about it 😩😂

    • @HacktivistMechanic
      @HacktivistMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

For an extra $500 I had my detailer buff everything out and it looked pretty solid so just budget for $1,200-$2,000.

    • @theripper121

Yes, be afraid...be very afraid. I just spent 2k on base clear which is their higher tier paint which included heavy sanding on truck roof. Picked up car it was terrible. Horrible orange peel much worse than this video and specks randomly all over every single panel. I was very unhappy to say the least.
Maaco is a crapshoot. Each one is independently owned and operated. Even after reading reviews about my local one it came out terrible. Guess their best guy called out sick that day...

Another thing you could have done is wet sand with 800 grit
And have one wet coat of clear coat sprayed on it.
It would look like a glass mirror
A lot of shops do that instead of trying to buff it out.

    • @OGKILLa9365

You want to have something for the clear coat to hold on too
2000 doesn’t really give you a lot to grab.

Colour sand to flatten, compound then polish and it would have come up like glass.
Detailers often know sweet fuck all and charge like wounded bulls, the detailer you took it too being a prime example.
I haven't heard such nonsense in my life, polish is an abrasive so starting coarse by way of sanding all the way through to your finest polishing compounds is how you remove imperfections, not avoid using finer compounds to perfect a finish as you try to hide flaws🤦‍♂️.
They were just lazy, missed the correct steps right from the start then at the end to cover bad practices
