    I don’t know what it’s like in America but in Australia a $2000 dollar paint job is what you would pay your unqualified mate to do it in his back shed a good paint job at a panel shop would be 6-10 grand

    • @puggsincyberspace

      In Australia, more like $AU5,000 for a backyard job, $AU10,000 for a qualified backyard job, and $15,000 or more for a proper paint booth job.
      Min was done really well for what I wanted in a paint booth. looks amazing...

      same here in US. if you pay for an economy pain job you will get economy paint job. no one in their right mind would take a car to maaco and expect anything better than a backyard paint job for what the charge. basically you get what you pay for.

Cause 2k labor and materials included for an entire car is an insult to anyone that does paint/body work... and you wanted them to cut and buff it for those same 2k. Bro be serious with yourself. Most end up between 10k-14k with some of the nicest "show car" finishes ending up in the 30k range. Quality paint and materials alone cost me me over 2k. Macco isn't for a car you care about. That honestly is what you would expect for $2k. To paint the camaro correctly the bumper covers, fender liners, rear hatch, door handle, mirrors, sweeps, weather stripping needs to come off the car. The spoiler needs to come off. To paint the underside of the hood it needs to come off. As you said the window sweeps took you 5 hours. So that is $500 in labor. Etc.
    The over spray can be corrected. The real issue is without disassembling the car you have sharp paint edges that will eventually peal.
    To get a good $2-3k paint job anywhere you need to disassemble the car for them, that is do the other $6k in labor yourself. Also most people at Macco are use to newer snap together cars and don't know how to work on old cars.
    I had my 89 firebird painted by Macco in 1999-2000. I had to go through all the over spray correction and wet sand and buff but in the end I couldn't complain what I got for $700. It has held up decent but I'm getting chips around the paint edges, but then again it's a 20 year old paint job.
    They did over sell it though.

  • @LRSS2455
    @LRSS2455 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The cost of good paint is at least $2000. That's no labor. I charge $5200 for just a basic respray (same color) $6500 for a color change (car only add another $300 for a truck). Tri-coat paints (Pearl white, Candy apple red) you are looking at a $10,000 to start off with. A complete restore will start at $20,000 (stripped to bare metal, minor body work done).
    If you want a good job from MAACOs or Earl Scheib, remove everything first. Do your own bodywork, prime & block sand your body work, prep & sand everything, bring them the parts removed from the car. Don't install your good rims & tires and new exhaust before bringing it to them. Trailer the vehicle there if you can so you won't have to remove the head & tail lights and bumpers. Go with the realization that they will be half ass masking the vehicle and they might sand it if they are feeling good that day. Don't expect a color match to any known code for your color, they use cheap paint and they only get it "close enough" to your color code. Never get the cheap enamel paint, always go with the urethane. Expect to buff the entire car to get a good shine because it will have orange peel. I personally would flatten out the clear and then spray another 3 coats of clear on it, then polish it. You will get what you pay for.

    $2000, for a full paint job, should have been the red flag you needed. As someone who paints cars for a living....I can tell you a full paint job STARTS around $5-$6000.
    Also... you can get the overspray off the headlights with a razor blade, easily and completely. As for the wheels take them off and use thinner on a rag.
    Lastly... for $2000 you got a steal lol. Tha paint (base and clear) ALONE would cost $500+ MINIMUM. Doesnt include all the tape, paper, sandpaper and hours of prep.... You got what you paid for completely and fairly.

    I had a Maaco paint job done on my 3rd gen Camaro years ago (I was a broke college student). Watching this video brought back memories. I feel your pain. Only thing I did different was I took the spoiler off before I took it in. I had to do a lot of touch up painting on stuff they didn’t paint, and spent several hours polishing off the black overspray off of my stock white five star wheels. I don’t know how to paint cars, but I probably could have done a better job. Maybe. Lol.

    • @TheREALOC1972

      You atleast couldn't have done worse..... I've been a body and paint guy for 30 years, my daughter screwed up and took a car to MAACO because she was in a hurry to get a paint job done and a month later he had paint flying off the car as she drove down the highway, they didn't even scuff it, they literally washed it force dried it with a leaf blower, half-ass taped it off and shot the paint. I ended up having to to sand it back down to bare manufatoring product (metal/plastic) because they put so much thinner in the paint to get it to stick that it ceeped into the original paint and started to lift it. That $1000 paint job she paid them for ended up costing them 10k because they decided to take it to court because they thought she was just some young girl not realizing her dad ran a custom paint shop and knew what they did.

    Have taken a few cars to Maaco for full body paint. The best thing to do is bring them the car as stripped of trim as possible. That includes removing the tail lights and sticking them into the truck area once you arrive at the shop. It is also a good idea to mask as much as possible, that you do not want overspray paint on.

    Honestly, I've wanted to get my car painted for a long time... everywhere I look wants more than $6k and usually closer to (or over) $10k. I know having your expectations be letdown sucks, but, after you have the surface correction done and fix the few things that got oversprayed on or painted, you should still be well under the minimum estimate that I have come across over the last few years of searching. I've always been worried about Macco, but this actually makes it seem like a decently economical idea....

    I hate to admit this, but I painted for Maaco 15 years ago. The 17 yr old kids prepping and masking get 1 hour to do their job. Maacos goal is 8 cars a day. You get what you pay for. Materials alone would cost you over $1000 if you were to do this at home. Try taking it to a regular body shop, they probably wouldn't touch it for under $5k.

    If I were going to bring a car to Maico, I would do the prep work myself and just have them spray it. When I was a young man, I went for a job interview at Maico. They required you to mask off a car in 30 minutes. I had done body work before and needed the money but I couldn't mask a car anywhere near that fast. That's what you're getting.

    Take it from someone who’s worked in body shops since leaving school. That paint job is good for a $2000 full colour change respray. There’s alot that goes into painting a car it is very labour intensive and other body shops would have quoted you 3 times that amount. The trim on top of the door being broken should have been replaced by Maaco but other than that all other issues can be sorted out in an afternoon

      Back in the 60's I recall going with a pal to get his car at an Earl Shribe's shop in Providence, R.I.
      We walked into a half open door into the 'spray' area where a guy with a bandana wrapped around his nose and mouth was finishing up a spray job. In the opposite corner of the room was a foot high pile of beer cans filling the corner by at least 6 x 6 feet!
      In those days you knew 'runs' were acceptable for the &29.95 paint job and so was all kinds of over spray.
      My brother's wife had her husband' MG painted as a birthday present and they even painted over the mud on the running boards and rocker panels for no extra charge either!

    I used to do restorations and the one thing I would always recommend to anyone who said they were sending a car to Maaco is if you don’t want paint on a part, don’t leave it on the car. Take the entire thing apart and trailer it there and back. They don’t pay enough labor time to their prep guys to take a car apart. They just give it a quick scuff with a da, maybe throw a little filler onto a couple dings, and throw some masking onto it as quick as possible. Your prep guy probably didn’t even make 100 bucks on your car.

    Welcome to my world. It doesn't matter how much I paid, it would always look crappie. Even these guys that charge 8 to 10k for a paint job on a car worth 8500 then tell you that it just isn't worth painting. If you want it done right you will have to do it yourself. I'm in this boat too. I will have to get a building built then construct a booth inside to paint my car. When I am done I will have a new shop left over with all the money I will have spent for a paint job. But really, this has happened all my life. I'm 68 everyone is always trying to reach into my pocket and take whatever I have. And I don't have much. However I do end up with one thing and that is a lot of experience in a lot of different things. Be glad it was only 2k you lost. Now learn how to fix it and do it yourself.

    I’m no body man . However I’ve painted several of them . One in particular was a 72 camaro that I only drag raced . I spent over $700 in materials back in 95 . I thought I did a really good job on it 1 tiny run under the key hole on the drivers door . First trip to the track a man backs into it 🤦🏻‍♂️ was glad that I didn’t drop the $4000 a body shop was asking . All I can say . With them doing a color change , door jambs and all ? You got a fair if not to better than fair deal .
    My advice to anyone cutting corners on a build is to do the body work yourself. Find an old refrigerator and paint that till you get the feel of what the gun actually does . You can mess up 4X and still save $$$ if you have to start all over . We live and learn bro . Better luck next time . And for the record . All Maccos are wham bam .

  • @RockyBoi90
    @RockyBoi90 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel like anyone supporting this, has no idea the amount of work (including body work) that goes into painting a car CORRECTLY. Most of the complaints mentioned here are about things that the customer could’ve prevented with their own prep work. Do you want to have to do the work yourself? No, but you also are having a car painted with materials for $2,000, not $5,000. The LEAST you can do when going to Maaco is remove or separate the parts (weatherstripping, plastic parts, windows, trim, etc.) you don’t want painted and put some stock wheels on. If I were using them, i’d do all the prep work prior, bring it completely gutted just to spray, and only let them do a basic work. For custom/restoration work, expect the prices to reflect.

Which is what led me to recently start my own TH-cam channel (Project X) documenting the building my own paint booth set up at home to paint cars myself...A bit of advice on the oversprayed rims, always put a BS set of rims & tires on before the car goes to paint, that overspray is tough to avoid for any painter. I took my 1971 Cadillac hardtop to MACCO. This was about 11 years ago. It was an Arizona car and very clean, just weathered cracked paint. I removed bumpers, weather stripping, all stainless trim, all glass except the windshield. The grille and all lights were also removed. I sanded the paint with an orbital sander, epoxy primed, 2K sand-able primer and urethane sealer. I had Macco use single stage urethane, metallic taupe. The metallic is tricky to spray without tiger stripes. The finish was great, very pleased. I could not paint the car because it was too large for my limited space. No specks, blems, drips or sags. $ 695.00 on special. It would have cost me almost that for PPG paint. Very good job .

    Maacco is horrible at painting! I had a similar situation a few years back where I wanted them to paint my whole vehicle. It was their best package at that time I paid over $5,000 for them to paint the whole vehicle. To make a long story short they did a horrible paint job. The paint on the vehicle was so rough that when you would touch the paint it felt like sand paper. Also, on all my doors they didn’t wait for the paint to cure and they closed shut all the doors soon after painting them and now the black weather stripping destroyed all of the paint around all of the doors because they didn’t wait for the paint to fully cure before closing all the doors so the weather stripping messed up the wet paint when they closed the doors shut. They probably had more cars to paint so they had to move mine out to make room as they don’t care. I even mentioned all of this to them and told them I was very upset with the quality of work and they basically told me to go kick rocks! They did absolutely nothing to help correct it!! Also there was overspray everywhere just like yours!
