Less dramatic than Maradona or Cruyff, but Platini was the most complete footballer of the eighties. He could score, pass, defend, dribble, command. His freekick ratio was also terrifying.
Michel Platini was a magnificent player, cultured and measured with a lot of flair and so skillful. He was a gifted playmaker but also scored many goals himself. He seems to be a little overlooked now, but I think he was the best European player of the 80's, just behind Diego at that time in the world game overall. An Argentina vs France World Cup Final in 1986 would have been a match to savour.
I personally think he was a better all-round player than Diego Maradona - a midfield creator, genuinely two footed, a regular goalscorer and with penalties, free-kicks and headers. I never saw Diego get many of them. In 1982/83 from midfield for Juventus he scored 30 goals in all competitions and not one Italian striker could match his 18 in the league! If Maradona can be said to have single-handedly won the World Cup in 1986, then the same can be said of Platini in the European Championship of 1984. Remember that? France had no real central striker that year so Platini was required not only to organise the midfield but to get himself into the penalty area, which he did with real class and scored 9 goals.

Cruyff is the best passer of the ball I've ever seen. Bent passess at bizarre Pythagoras geometrical angles. Did it with either feet. Charlton could also hit them with both feet, with swerve & venom. Pelé could hit them with either feet. Any range and distance. Beckenbauer & Platini was great at long raking, angular passes. Hit with majestic strokes. Hoddle passess were similar to Platini's. But he hit them both footed. Pirlo & De Bruyne whipped passes across themselves are also great. Diego & Dinho improvisational ball passes were outrageous.
When you gauge a player or athlete, you have to look at the times in which they played. If you watch old black and white film of Pele, much of the time those defenders are no where near him nor do they touch him in anyway. If you look at the way the game is played for a few decades now, compared to when Platini played, you realize FIFA has tightened up the game so the talent could play without fear of injury. Platini was an artist. Since his time, maybe in terms of style and technique, Pirlo comes closest. But Platini could create goals and score them. Perhaps the best player (or Zidane or Maradona?) from free kicks ever?
I wouldn't even put Zidane in top-10 if we're talking about free-kick taking ability. Maradona, Platini & Zico were all very similar in 1980's. The likes of Juninho and Beckham used different technique but were very effective as well. Later career Messi was (and still is to be fair) also insane.
One of the best but Maradona and Zico are better. They could do what he could and more. Long pass, short combination passes, acrobatic/bicycle kick pass and also had incredible killer passing. It is close though, I could see someone making an argument for him being the best ever.
@@AllendeEtAl I disagree. Platini lacked the athleticism from what I've seen to pull off the passes that Zico could do and Zico could execute all of Platini's passes.

I think he has the bigger passing range (and the overall variety) than De Bruyne, personally. De Bruyne can certainly challenge Platini for the final third passing and he’s certainly a better crosser of the ball.
De Bruyne is special though. Undoubtedly one of the greatest final third passers of all-time, we can already say that.
@@HarmsFootball I think KDB has more variety. Ever since Rodri has solidified his position as the pivot. KDB does not need to drop deep. Pre-2019, KDB's long range passing, switching the play was amazing, the most underrated variety of his passes
@@HarmsFootball remember I said creative passer. Pirlo and Kroos might have more passing range than KDB but there’s a reason there’s only one “assist man”. I’m talking about the most important skill from an attacking midfielder, playmaking ability to and in the final third. Every top striker in the modern game will pick playing with KDB over probably everyone else in history.
@@chuka6625 that's a fair assessment if we use your definition, I'd say.
He has always been a very good player but it turned out to be a world class champion only when he joined Juventus.
During his italian years he was legitimate the best of the world, after Diego
I think he was the best in the world period - up until (including) 1985. After that Diego had surpassed him (and, arguably, everyone else ever - for me his peak is peak football).
0:31 Wizardry. Especially considering that horrible pitch.
5 best passer for me all time
Xavi Platini cryuff Maradona Messi hon mention laudrap
Totti/Rui Costa/Pirlo/Sagnol...
When passing a brown envelope becomes art.
zico please
If platinum had the physical speed of someone like cr7 or di stefano he'd be at the same stage as el rey pele and messi
I dont think so because He was lack of skill but. He was so elegant compare to them.
@@madra000 Tbh he wasn't slow.
He was very agile
I always thought and still think that platini was and is better than maradona
The balls of his passes touched the ground and braked i never understand ...
0:06
1:20
3:30 ...
The number of fools is insane. 70's and 80's football were another game
Michel Platini ratio .... Long range-passes 96-98 ..... short pass or plays one-twos 90-92 .... crossing ability or long passess in speed 84-90 .... passes in deep and vision ... 94-97
❤
The weight on them through balls .
I like this pass and wonder why GK didn’t get red card
@@skeeter_henry_21 in effetti hai ragione 🤣
✌❤ 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 🌎 ⚽
He is miles better than Zidane as a number 10.
And i want to take add that platini best header playing position 10. He was like a elite forward at heading@@HarmsFootball
Romario and Pele come to mind. But you would realise this because you’re not a student of the game.
Sus compñeros eran malones, tan buenos pases a gol y erraban casi todas
One of the best but Maradona and Zico are better. They could do what he could and more. Long pass, short combination passes, acrobatic/bicycle kick pass and also had incredible killer passing. It is close though, I could see someone making an argument for him being the best ever.
Zico was a better dribbler but Platini a better passer
@@AllendeEtAl I disagree. Platini lacked the athleticism from what I've seen to pull off the passes that Zico could do and Zico could execute all of Platini's passes.
Zico better passer than Platini? You definitely know nothing about football and did not witness the eighties....
None at Juventus at the time (and very few in other Serie A clubs). There were a little more people of colour playing for the French national team - Tigana, Tresor...
Zibi Boniek.
