    Cue the pros returning their 2020 iMacs when they realise how loud they are all the time, how unreliable they are on long renders without Xeon chips and the bottle necked single TB3 controller. Pro stuff isn't about specs and tests it's about real world heavy use and for that the 2017 iMac Pro is still better because no amount of mild increase in speed is worth the sacrifices you have to make for it. For hobbyists it's a different situation.

      Absolutely agree here. People don't understand what a Xeon 8 cores CPU is - how many desktops comes with this CPU? That's a CPU you find in rack servers!! It's have 10 gig ethernet, 4 thunderbolt ports and 4 USB 3.1 port without the need to connect a display. If you consider that Thunderbolt 3 ports can be daisy-chained, that's up to 12 devices (!!!) + SD card and headphones that you can connect to this computer at a time... Why would you ever need more? Plus it comes with a 5K display, which in itself, cost around 2 grands. The GPU is 1500, the CPU is still going for 700... you don't have to troubleshoot HDMI/DisplayPort issues, which might actually save me from suicide. You don't have to buy any dongle, external GPU, or whatever. It you consider the separate cost of workstation with the same CPU + 5K display + PCie extensions to get to the same number of ports + having to deal with a massive tower and tons of heat... that's a no brainer. They discontinued the iMac Pro because it's too good and people who got it won't have to switch for the next 5-6 years at least.

    I edit 4K video on the iMac 3.6 10-core with the Radeon 5700XT very smoothly. After Effects post effects as well.
    It's a slick machine. I'm really glad I specced it out.

    The iMac Pro was introduced at a time between the two generations of the Mac Pro. Apple simply needed to offer a “Pro” desktop which eventually became available last year. Now in the twilight of the Intel era on the Mac, the iMac Pro as a product line is simply redundant.

    I've been experimenting with Hackintosh and KVM, but the level of complexity and compatibility (sleep & TB3) have me 2nd guessing this path. And now these monster 27" iMac's with 5700XT have me thinking that a new iMac is the best option. I just miss upgradability so bad...and choice of monitors. I hate that Apple only offers this at insane prices (Mac Pro)

    Belated feedback if this hasn't been commented previously. A "ton of external..." (3:28) devices daisy-chained to a single Thunderbolt 3 port is jussst a slight generalization.
    First, as most are aware, iMac TB ports are limited to one controller for both TB ports. Depending on the external configurations, devices, etc. TB3 device linear progression ("daisy-chain") could and does result in throttling by placing heavy demands on the ONE iMac TB controller. Some have commented on bandwidth latency using less than the 6 maximum recommended daisy-chained external TB devices with large redundancy configurations and requirements (one professional videographer commented that using only two, multi-bay enclosures containing large 4K files, he experienced some sporadic but consistent latency).
    Conversely, we can go over to the base Mac Pro (2019) and, with a far-greater price than the 27-inch iMacs, also only have one controller for the USB ports (referring to the back-plane of the Mac Pro only).
    Just a word of caution for those of us still considering the Intel-base Apple line-up (listen up Cook) for their compatibility with not-so-legacy applications. If looking at these "little" iMacs consider your external device needs, configurations, etc. and possibly consuming large bandwidth for these single controller TB ports.

    My 27” 1 TB iMac won’t upgrade anymore 😭. It is one of the first 27” models, and I suppose it IS amazing to have a computer last over 10 years.
    But still..... I completely filled it and now live off my iPhone and iPad.
    Upgrading those every few years is expensive enough.
    Do I really need a home computer anymore?

      @jas_bataille 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel ya Lea! I just switched to web/mobile development and I'm still on a 2012. It's a dependable machine but definitely outdated. You can get a 2018 Mac Mini maxed out at 64gb of RAM with a quad-core i5 Coffee Lake for about 1200 bucks, which is not bad, but nowhere near those. Having said that : if you ever have the budget, get the iMac Pro. It's much better for development : you have a Xeon 8 cores chip you can almost only find in rack-mounted servers, and more ports than you'll ever need : considering you can daisy-chain thunderbolt 3, that's up to 12 potential devices connected at a single time + SD card, 10 gig ethernet and headphones :O
      The Xeon-W 8 cores chip runs quiet, cool, stable. It's a real pro chip, one you won't find in a lot of desktops even.

    The new 27 Inch I-Mac will have more processing and graphics power, it has the same SDXC card slot, and can be upgraded to 10Gig Ethernet, and you can upgrade the Ram yourself, (which you can't do on the I-Mac Pro). It has True Tone, the T2 Chip and all SSD up to 8 GB (the I-Mac Pro only goes to 4TB). Also the new I-Mac has the awesome Nano-texture Glass, and an Radeon Pro 5700XT with 16GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. Apple ought to call this one the I-Mac Pro and the smaller one the I-Mac.

      'awesome' nano texture glass that reduces the picture quality to a flat blur which will could cause eye strain overtime; only people in very bright places with lots of glare should pay $500 more for what in normal light and darkness is a considerably worse picture

    Great review. I really appreciate this. I still have my mid-2011 27" iMac running on High Sierra. I just recently used a OWC upgrade kit to put a 1TB SSD and 2 TB HD inside and maxed it with 32 GB of RAM and this thing is running better than it's ever run. I'm just stuck on High Sierra. I just may do this thing you've pointed out. I use Davinci Resolve and Adobe CC and believe could still be highly effective with the new 2020 iMAC 27". Thanks again for your review.

    Didn't apple update the iMac Pro to a 10core I would like to see a comparison with the newer iMac Pro not a 3 year old computer. by the way the thunderbolt ports on the iMac Pro have two buss so each pair of ports are one there own buss that could be important if you have two really fast hard drives. I do think the new iMac is a great deal but I think that you didn't review the iMac Pro I'd like to see it against the new iMac Pro

    • @AppleInsider
      @AppleInsider  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Thomas!
      Apple didn't really "update" the new iMac Pro as much as remove the 8-core version and dropping the price on the 10-core. So nothing really changed on the iMac Pro other than the price tag. We took that into consideration here, since we are comparing the 10-core iMac to the 10-core iMac Pro with both at $5K.
      And yes, the Thunderbolt 3 limitations are due to the separate busses -- you need two for four ports. It will perhaps make a small difference, but at that point you may be looking at the higher-end iMac Pro models anyway if you need additional graphics or RAM.

    • @thomaspipermusic
      @thomaspipermusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AppleInsider so when you get the 10core imac 5k and your comparing the 10 core iMac Pro you should also compare the 12 core Mac Pro with the w5700x too ;) I haven't seen a lot of tests of that config. I happen to have bought that Mac Pro config (i'm thinking if adding another w5700xgpu so I have two)

    To be honest, a base iMac Pro is a bad comparison. If it was maxed out and the price reduced close to that 5K then it would be a better deal for professionals. Having said that, I wish the iMac Pro can be upgraded to 256 GB instead of paying for 5K for memory from Apple to get that memory. That is robbery.

      @Antonio Zamudio the 18 core iMac Pro was almost the same benchmarks as my 16 Mac Pro. Just allows you to have a bigger video card. Given the change from Intel, I would probably buy a refurbished 18 core iMac Pro on Apples website if you can do the 128 gb ram and 16 go x video card. You’ll save tons of cash and get a 5k screen with it.
