    Great video! When you do the knock-down drag-out battle with the higher end iMac Pro and MBP, please remember to report fan noise with the various stress tests you run. I think it's pretty clear that this new iMac is an awesome performer, but if the fans are kicking in loudly at full load, a quiet iMac Pro might still win the day.

    • @lux-pro
      @lux-pro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ^^ Definitely, this!! I elected to purchase the iMac over the iMac Pro back in 2017 for the savings and comparative performance between the high-end iMac and low-end iMac Pro. I have to run the poorly optimized Avid Media Composer for work and the fans are going constantly. It still performs well but the fans drive me absolutely mad and it's a bad look when clients are in the room. Would love to see some dB measurements after they have both been running hot for an hour or more. (Would also be great to see some Media Composer tests for us film industry folks!). We're a minority but as interested in these machines as everyone else :)

    • @mcignatz
      @mcignatz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lux-pro Totally agree! Nobody gives Avid much love or pays it much notice when it comes to testing out the gear. I recently had to cut a show with a mid-2013 iMac running Avid - MC 2019.6 at the time - and it was only after I convinced the producers to up the RAM from 16GB to 32GB that the program started to play nice... but the fans still cranked up. I have much hope that the new 10 core iMac - maxed out with 128GB of RAM and the 5700 XT 16GB memory - will actually be a solid machine for Avid editing here in 2020.

      @@aaaaea9268 I've been using Apple's retina since the first gen Retina MacBook Pro 2012. I got rid of my iMac 5K when I bought Dell's 8K monitor. 5K looks very soft in comparison. I was itchy on buying a Pro XDR, but 6K resolution is just the same PPI as 5K, but larger, still quite soft. I am so sick of Apple's obsession with measly 200 ppi for desktop. The minimum should be 300 ppi.

    Well done on the performance testing. There were questions I definitely had about the new iMac and you answered them perfectly.
    I knew from Geekbench that in raw performance, the new iMac is faster than it's iMac Pro counterpart. Graphics was the big question. I also know that the more expensive iMacs come with higher performing SSDs as well.
    Yes, if you are editing video with codecs that need lots of graphics performance, then the iMac Pro will be the better choice. Maybe. We'll see when you get the model with the better GPU.
    We're living in an amazing age. Technology is so affordable that it's not really the limiting factor anymore. Money is still money. But the value/performance ratio has never been better. One issue that's a good one to have: with all the great options, it makes it more difficult to figure out what gear you should get!

    Referring to the new iMac as a "5k iMac" and the old one as "the 5 thousand dollar iMac" is slightly confusing. It's like those "Get me Hennimore" sketches.

    Do I need antivirus or internet security how is called nowadays?. If so, what brand would you recommend due to experience, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, etc I am very clueless with anything related to security for Apple ecosystem in general. And second, the complete entry level comes with 512ssd. Should I upgrade to 1TB ssd for better performance? I have a WD external 8TB HD. 512ssd would be enough for the updates of MacOS and the occasionally software. Or it would slow down my Mac since is only 512ssd and i should go one up for future proof. I thank you guys in advance for the response. You got in me a loyal subscriber and a future mask owner from your merch. bye

    Hey MAx - great channel and I love your reviews. I have a question for you (or anyone who may weigh in). I am currently editing on a late Macbook pro-2011 and I am in desperate need of an upgrade. Waiting for the new chipset is not an option and the new iMac 27 inch is right in my sweet spot. I am torn between the 8 core or the 10 core. Price isn't an issue - it's trying to determine the best long-range solution of power vs thermal issues. Any advice? I know you plan to get one next week and review but if you were me on a late Macbook 2011 and needed a computer now, what would you do?

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We think the 10-core is gonna be overkill for a lot of things. Like for video editing, it was not a limiting factor in any of the tests we ran. Even in C200 RAW, graphics was the limitation. Maybe if you're doing things like 4K or 8K R3D RAW then it might give you an advantage. It really depends on what you're doing. If price isn't an issue, then get the 10-core, but there is a chance it could be louder than the 8-core for some tasks, but we won't know until we get it. I'd personally rather take that $400 and spend it on 10gb ethernet, more RAM and storage. (of course, after already buying the 5700 XT) that's the star of the show.

    • @acreativedifference
      @acreativedifference 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaxTechOfficial Those are all included in my build. It's just a decision on the 10 core. I have read about possible thermal issues. I edit a lot of video but my clients are all moving towards 4k.

    I wanted to buy the 2020 version but the SSD are soldered onto the board as shown in the tear-down video. If the SSD fails at any point your going to be shelling out big $$ to fix. Also you can't even add another SSD.
    Your SSD will slow down as you get closer to filling it.

      8-Core CPU and 5500M 8GB graphics. 32GB of RAM if you want to be safe. It'll help for photo editing. That's a very solid spec. If you don't want to spend that much, you could get away with the 6-core, 5300M graphics an 32GB of RAM.

    Quick question: when exporting a 4K H.264 video (through Media Encoder), can you still continue to edit in Premiere without any struggles/lags? If yes, just barely or easy-peasy? 🤔
    Thinking about getting an iMac 2020 and an answer would help a lot with my decision. 😊

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t bet on it. Premiere eats at your system when you export. Final cut will auto pause the export to give you full performance when playing back and auto resume when you don’t need it so it works very well for this kind of workflow.
