    I just switched from a completely custom built PC to an entry level 27" 5K iMac and I have to say...for someone who doesn't work with videos or anything much more intensive than basic Lightroom /Photoshop, the iMac has more than enough power to easily handle daily tasks. Don't get me wrong, for gaming and heavy workloads, I'm sure the PC has it's strong suits but the stability of MacOS is simply unmatched. Anyways, great video!

      I agree 100%.....for years I was a PC guy. I initially found the iMac I bought a little scary, as an old retired mainframe programmer, I still enjoyed doing everything exactly as I wanted, and wasn't used to the macro's. But after a couple months, I was a total convert, I absolutely love my iMac. I'm NOT a gamer. I bought it in mid-2010 and have NEVER had a problem. Still runs like a clock and the only thing I ever did, and not sure if it was needed, was I doubled or quadrupled the RAM by unscrewing a couple screws, snapping out the old memory parts and snapping the new in...I don't use it for heavy duty stuff, but DO use it a LOT. I'm an old movie documentary buff and for years have used the 27in iMac to watch several movies and/or documentaries daily....I'll set a playlist of Universe videos or old monster movies, etc and fall asleep with them running. I worry about heat, so purchased a desktop fan that I keep running in back of it, just hitting the metal back where it has always heated up, and I figure it will dissipate some of the heat, letting the internal fan run less. I wish I knew if there was a way to add a 2nd fan, and also, the cost of having it taken apart to give a good cleaning, as I'm sure it has gotten plenty of dust inside. If I was loaded with dough, I would go for the iMac pro, but there is NO REASON for me to switch from what I have now, and will just keep it until it craps out, and the way it runs, I doubt it will be very soon. You get what you pay for, and yes, tech moves fast, and we live in a "Throw Away" society now...and that is why many things are cheaper...they don't last...but the Mac is GREAT for old timers who don't need crazy speed and just love reliability, and long lasting quality. I'm sure you can get fast as lightning stuff if you want to pay for it with Apple, and it WILL be better built....but maybe not as fast, and if you plan to toss it in 2 or 4 years anyway, why spend all the extra money on a mac>>just go with the lightning speed, save money, and get a new one in a couple years.

    What would you recommend, for 2020. A basic iMac Pro with 64 gig ram and a 2 TB SSD drive, or a maxed out iMac 5K, i9 6 core, same 2 TB SSD but with 128 gig ram from OWC. Currently just need for TH-cam video 1080 P, however 4K in the next five years is probably realistic. My current 2104 iMac keeps crashing with 32 gig ramWhen trying to edit in Final Cut Pro 10.

    I think there is a lot of over exaggeration in this video. The 5K iMac is barely audible 98% of the time and definitely doesn’t sound like a plane about to take off when the fans are going.
    The iMac Pro is not worth the extra $2000+ over the 5K iMac for most people. The iMac Pro is designed for a very specific subset of users.

      I agree, I feel like for most people who are editing even in 4K or use after effects in animation the 5K iMac is just fine. I truly feel like the iMac pro is for creatives who work with big files.

      This iMac pro is worth it and for a simple reason it handles day to day filmmaker tasks in the top of the notch and maybe yes it is more expensive but do remember you are future proofing yourself since the future is 8K and nothing is gonna stop that I hardly shoot 1080p nowadays the only time I do is to get that 120p slow motion shots, it’s all about how much money your willing to spend. Up until 3 years ago I still used my 2009 iMac worked perfectly fine.

    Can you tell me which plane sounds like that? I’m really interested. Maybe I can use the same tech in jet planes. If you haven’t heard one, you can even go to a wind tunnel facility at your nearby university. In fact I haven’t seen any other laptop, let alone desktop that has as low a sound. In fact, even the older ceiling fans (I’m not talking about the 20th century ones that you’d find in Indian university hostels, which are actually quite noisy) sound much louder than that.

    What if you can't afford to buy into the Adobe Creative Cloud and have to use CS 6 applications? I had to return 2 brand new MacBook Pros for that very reason. No one ever seems to know the truth (even in Apple stores!) that you are forced to buy into the Creative Cloud to be able to use iMacs that use retina displays. What if I just want to upgrade my late 2012 iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor to a 3Tb SSD drive? How would I go about doing that? ¶ I thank you in advance for responses.

    I really question which of the two will even be working properly in 3-4 years. As a video editor, I invested heavy into a maxed out 2013 iMac as my every day driver, convinced that both Apple's design and product support would be the better value over time option vs building another PC. I started running into issues around 2 years in, but the system held firm with minor issues until year around year 3. By mid-2016 I was dealing with regular crashes, and by early 2017 the system almost cost me a couple of long-standing clients due to repeat system failures when pushing it in Premiere CC.
    Turns out, Apple's iMac thermal design just isn't good enough for long-term serious use. After several consultations and few over-night stays in Apple's shop, I was told that given the workload, I should be happy I got as much out of it as I did. Premiere isn't optimized like FCP is for the system so every project with 4k or even worse, long GOP formatted footage, really started to push the thermal limits just scrubbing through timelines and 7 out of every 10 attempts to render caused a complete system failure and a force restart!
    Sure, 3+ years for a system in a professional work environment is pretty good - I made my money back on the investment several times over - But when I started looking around and waiting for Apple to release a better product... All they did was announce more design-heavy options that look like they'll become glorified paperweights in a few years time. So, I built a new PC with an emphasis on cooling and thermal design - time will tell if it was the right decision, but when I saw that Apple wasn't changing the design on the iMac Pro and was still going cram in server grade desktop hardware with only minor modifications to the layout and a single added fan, well... best of luck to anyone buying it for long-term use! There's a reason you won't find modern mac pros or iMacs used in a serious Post house, they just aren't a reliable investment for the long run! Stick with modified g5 towers, or build a PC :)

    A lot of people mention the upgradable RAM on the iMac 27" but that's like, the least of my concerns when buying a machine like this. The iMac crushes the rest of the iMac lineup in every other metric, except some very random and specific tasks. Also it stays cooler longer, meaning you can use it in a studio environment much more easily than the 27" iMac. I think the extra spend is worth it if you're a prosumer or above. If you're looking for a great computer for the hobbyist level, the 27" iMac is fantastic for that range.

    I have a 27" 5K iMac. I have a background in production, but I currently don't have the experience, or work load demands that would make me need the iMac pro, or even the 2017 iMac over the late 2015. Most of the time the iMac is used as a general computer, but I do heavier tasks at times such as running virtual machines. One other consistent use the iMac has is a media streaming server.
    I have the top standard config 3.3Ghz core i5 SkyLake, 32 GB RAM that i upgraded from Amazon, a 2 TB Fusion drive, and the AMD R9-m395 2GB VRAM GPU. Overall really content with the setup, I've been able to experiment with some 4K@30 from my iPhone 7 Plus without any issues, and of course, HD is no issue.

    The quality of this video is really good. And the information was good. But tbh, it's a very small minority that is editing in 8K. Most people edit in 1080p or 4K. There definitely should be a video of these iMac's doing tests on more adobe products like LR, PS, PP, and how many files can be edited in LR and exported, and likewise with PS AND PP. That will target a larger audience. Also, the same should be done ONLY on a 5k Mac that is a base model, so that it shows what that computer can do as most people are not going to spend $4-6,000 on an iMac unless they are a well established business.

      Rihard Final Cut Pro is just so much better than Adobe has. It’s really the main reason a lot of video editors use Mac’s.
      But Linus Tech Tips prices out the iMac Pro if you were to build it and the iMac is 200 dollars cheaper (roughly). Of course, as they mentioned, Apples choice of hardware is odd and you could build a capable machine without using the same choices they did. But there really isn’t an “Apple Tax” on the iMac Pro. It’s just a really expensive computer that’s using really expensive parts. Plus if you’ve seen a tear down of the device it’s just amazing how they were able to fit that much power in something that thin and beautiful.

      Allen S yeah this odd choices that cost unnecessary more money. If I had still to buy a Mac for final cut, I would rather build a hackingtosh. But we work in our studios only with Adobe Premiere. And I really don't miss OS X or final cut. But my last final cut was final cut 5 so I'm a oldie 😂

      @RiceCubeTech 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One word: Hackinotosh. There is no reason to pay so much for MacOS when Hackintoshes are pretty much stable 99 percent of the time if you do the install right. There is no reason not to if you buy the same parts that the imac is using. In fact a hackintosh running an 8700k and a 1080ti is much better in final cut than most of apples most premium offerings. Xeons and ECC memory is not something a youtube prosumer will ever need or utilize.

    Hmmm... I am early here so you're probably going to see this. I have been interested in MBP lately and thinking to pick one up, but I don't see myself using the iPhone anytime soon, so my idea for a video is "Using an Android Phone with a MacBook for a Week" or something like that. There are realy no videos up on youtube talking about that...

      There’s not much to it, it’ll just be “there’s no air drop, no continuity, no iMessage on the MacBook,” etc.
      But at least you can use the same cable up charge your MacBook and your android lol

      coffee keeps me going it's really not that bad lmao. I still use imessage with my email and it doesn't cause me any problems. I use Google photos in place of airdrop which works just the same tbh.

      I have a MacBook Pro and a s8 it's an ok experience, you can use parallels desktop to transfer data from your to the Mac and handsfree app to make calls from the Mac with your android phone, use WhatsApp on your Mac and phone instead of iMessage as virtually everyone has WhatsApp these days

    • @tigerugby1996
      @tigerugby1996 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Doing this. Way I transfer video is through android file transfer (google app). Nothing really to do. I use join for most of my functions of communicating to my phone. Sms replies, notifications on desktop all that jam. Photos are uploaded to google through the photos app. That is basically it.

    Hey guys, keep in mind even if you're shooting a project in 8K or you're shooting on Film which is 12k but scanned down to UHD 4K, we still don't have 8K monitors or TV's that can handle that many pixels just yet. Please don't waste your money on the iMac Pro unless you're literally editing projects weekly for clients or your own personal projects. Personally I don't think it's worth the 2 thousand dollar jump.

  • @richarddr1234
    @richarddr1234 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I-Mac pro can't even handle 8k properly. If you're looking at "future proofing" with a standard that practically nothing in consumer technology can handle yet, with a device that can't even do it perfectly, it's just stupid. Just save yourself the thousand bucks. By the time 8k is a thing, a better Mac would have come along.

    • @joshuawalker5249
      @joshuawalker5249 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the time we even get to 8K... I feel like that's gonna be a hot minute too. I always tell my friends even when you shoot in 8K you're still exporting in 4K. They don't even make 8K TV's or Monitors yet...What the fuck is the universe.

      @bookmarkthis it is not a story about nerds and dorks, but about creatives. Not having logic (music) or not having final cut pro and not having prores raw codecs...while having more virus and running antivirus software or using the pc as offline workstation. And then, you have the design that inspires people from directors to businessmen to phd owners to musicians. But you have an argument why they limited processor cores, limited ram memory, and limited the color accuracy of the screen for instance. And we are still waiting for the mac pro to come out...

    I wouldn't buy the iMac Pro at this time. We don't need that kind of processing power. However, that doesn't mean that a person shouldn't get that machine. I know there are people that would benefit from that more powerful machine.

  • @RiceCubeTech
    @RiceCubeTech 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once the imac gets 8th gen i7s with 6 cores, bang for buck will only get better. Dave lee made a good point, the imac pro is not for youtubers or prosumers. ECC memory and Xeons are not always a good deal for video editing. Its meant for deep learning and compute based tasks.
