      @@darbchandler I'm extremely happy with it. This thing is a power-horse. and something about the minimal design is just so conducive to productivity. This iMac I payed 5k (64 gb ram, ten-core processor) for was able to pay for itself within two months with the work I got from having it. And now, 8 months later, I'm doing even better with some very big jobs recently.

      MBP is an 8 core and is also a mobile variant so uses less power. It’s still ridiculous to run a CPU at 100 degrees. It needs a more aggressive fan curve or bigger heatsink. Granted also intel don’t help by being crap.

    • @markomclane475
      @markomclane475 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jpracing893 Intel isnt the problem in the apple thermal situation, apple is purposely letting the macbooks run hot so that when they switch to apple silicon, they run that much cooler. After I tore down a macbook pro, I found the their "custom designed" plate that transfers heat from the cpu to the heatpipes/fans wasnt making sufficient contact due to pegs that were purposely put there by apple to prevent the contact from happening or it was a very stupid accident, a quick trip to the milling machine to get rid of these pegs brought thermals down 30C. I reckon apple is using the same strategy with their imacs, this will make apple silicon seem way better when in reality it wont be that much different to intel in terms if thermal performance

    96 degrees is not "very good". It's going to reduce the machine's life by quite a bit - not to mention that in time, dust goes in and then performance goes right out the window. I think the best combo might be the i7 with the 5700XT - still trying to research this.

      I was thinking exactly the same. I was worried though about updates for MacOS but having a 12core with the same specs for a 1000£ less and ultra wide monitor were really tempting. But then I saw videos about current technology not able to process H.265 codec and that it is being done through T2 chip on my MacBook Pro and I realised I will not be able to process my H.265 footage if I go hackintosh. This IMac though has a T2 chip and the 5700xt is actually NAVI tech based so.... I guess the decision is made.

      @@petrthingsilike8487 A work friend has done exactly that as he waits for Apple Silicone, built an 8-core 10700 + 5600 XT dual boot. The install experience was surprisingly smooth and after a bit of standard tweaking to USB mapping, has got what appears to be a very stable machine. I got to play a bit and here's what I found:
      I haven't tried h265 so can't speak to that, but Final Cut operates very smoothly with 4K footage (e.g., GoPro etc) as well as high bit-rate 1080p from the Blackmagic Pocket Camera. That said, so does my top-spec late 2012 iMac (I'm not a heavy video guy!). What I can say, and what I find super interesting about this video and others, is the 10 core iMac may not really be worth it compared to the "standard" model's 8-core 10700.
      This is based on other iMac benchmarks I've seen and from my friends machine. For example, the Geekbench single core on my friends machine is 1240, multi-core 9745(!). Cinibench clocked in at 4871. Critically, during these heavy CPU tests the big old CPU cooler never lets the CPU get over 60 C.
      Of course along with the cooler temps is the fact the custom rig is basically silent. That said, (and this appears to affect everything except the Mac Pro Navi's at the moment), the GPU compute performance is apparently hugely crippled right now. The Geekbench Metal CPU test on the custom rig is a paltry 38000. On Windows the same GPU should be over 70k. This is apparently caused by bad power management for the newer chips, and it shows. I can't say it's been a huge problem for "normal" work, but it's gotta affect it in some way. Curiously, this driver issues doesn't seem to affect game engines as much. Unigine Heaven averages around 100fps on the custom rig.
      Anyway lol, I think in conclusion the i9 in the new iMac is indeed thermally and power constrained, leading to more fan than you may like and simply, quite a bit less performance than what's possible. I think a much smarter play is the 8 core + 5700 / 5700 XT, provided Apple can square up the driver issues.

    • @petrthingsilike8487
      @petrthingsilike8487 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matthew Grdinic thank you so much for such a detailed answer! The 10 core has a sense for some - for instance if I am using Blender for 3D animations and counting physics. The software is CPU based in these tasks, not GPU. It uses GPU only for rendering. If anybody uses it only for photoshop or video, 8 core is pretty much ideal and really sufficient. You are right about the noise, the fans will be running like crazy comparing to the custom build with water cooling. But that noise is something I can live with. As long as it doesn’t throttle. Basically it stands and falls for me on the ability to decode H.265 which only the T.2 can handle nicely right now. The fact about crippled GPU performance is really interesting. Haven’t seen a review to mention that yet. So basically only the 5700xt is performing fully on these iMacs right now?

    • @matthewgrdinic1238
      @matthewgrdinic1238 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petrthingsilike8487 Hey no problem! So regarding Blender, so interesting you mention that, had also fired it up and was a bit disappointing to see Cycles is CPU only at this point -- however, not sure if you've ever tried it, but AMD's (free) Pro Render worked flawlessly and quite fast with the 5600 XT. I'd say the same as what Cycles + CUDA on my GTX 1070 PC does.
      That said, I ran a quick bench of the BWM-27 scene and came in at 2:16. From what I can see on: www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i7-10700k/6.html that's pretty darn good, within spitting distance of a unrestrained 10900. That 10700 really pulls its weight.
      Real quick on the GPU performance -- the first mention I saw was Max Tech's 10-Core review a few days ago, and then further backed up with what I saw on the custom machine. And I should be clear, the only place the 5700 XT seems to running at full speed (in Geekbench anyway!) was on the Mac Pro, not iMac. Sorry for no source on that, though possibly Max Tech again.
      Either way these new machines are beautiful, I guess bottom line you literally can't go wrong with this crop :)

    • @petrthingsilike8487
      @petrthingsilike8487 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Grdinic that is awesome info. Yeah, under MacOS it is only CPU because MacOS doesn’t support OpenCL anymore and Blender doesn’t support Metal yet. So - bootcamp - and then You can use open CL from AmD card, so I bought eGPU and 5700xt and got the BMW benchmark in around 1:40. But because I do video it was still a lot, so I swapped for RTX2080 super and got it down around 30-40secs I think. Now for a single image that is not much of a difference, but try to do a scene with fog, glass etc and the gap widens up tremendously. Multiply it by 25 frames a second and you just lowered 2 days of render into one afternoon. So MacBook Pro 2018, eGPU And external 4K monitor and you are good to go. But - there is lots of drawbacks. Switching between win and MacOS is dreadful because I have to redo the setup every time because Mac will not recognise the Nvidia card, also every time I try to connect something else into any other ports, the Mac will collapse because the EGPU takes all the lanes. Now I am not massive Blender user, just started learning during quarantine, but I do lots of videos. I think the new IMac will give me the ideal compromise for my workflow. The better processor and 5700 will do reasonably well in Blender if needed, switching between win and MacOS will be without hassle, T2 chip for h.265 and I will have nice 5K monitor with my T3 4K ultra wide monitor. I think it will be good setup but new experience might prove me otherwise.

I'm a Cinematographer and editor, and I'm buying iMac so that I can take big projects and work on them in future. where I'll use softwares like Adobe suit, garage band and FCP. I'm planning to take 8k footages as well in future (may be after 1-2years). Do let me know. I can upgrade it later in a year or two.

      In this decision the main thing will be the codec. If you are using H.265 like I do with my Fuji cameras, you need the new 2020 IMac because it has T.2 chip. If you are using any other codecs whether it’s from BM or RED etc. check what works best for you for the money. Personally I am going to sell my MacBook Pro and eGPU and buy the new iMac almost full specs. About 4K £.

    Its not a thermal problem, its a watt problem/intel problem. Real benchmarks using AVX and all-core turbo is the real test. But having 5 ghz on 10 cores needs at least 200 watts something Apple does not deliver. This is the problem in today's market. The same hardware from different vendors has different performance because of wattage/C states. It's not thermal. Thermal throttling starts at 100 degrees celsius on desktop Intel. (And my tests: Razor 8 core laptop: Real all core turbo is 3.5ghz, not 4+ ghz that Intel says. Macbook pro 2017 all-core turbo is 2-2.5ghz. And yes: I have tried different logic boards. RiMac skylake/kabylake 4.2-4.4 all core turbo the last honest Intel. The skylake core is not designed to be over 4 cores so putting 10 cores in more>/less TDP is just false marketing. Short benchmarks are worthless since the Cstate/wattage/throttling does not impact + using AVX puts a lot more stress on the CPU. And I don't even address that Intel only has 20 plus 4 PCI lanes. 16 to grafic and 4 for PCI express NVme + 4 for the fake PCI lanes on the motherboard. You hit bandwidth limit just using a second fast SSD. Intel is a joke today,

    Apple is purposely letting the macbooks (and I reckon the Imacs as well) run hot so that when they switch to apple silicon, they run that much cooler. After I tore down a macbook pro, I found the their "custom designed" plate that transfers heat from the cpu to the heatpipes/fans wasnt making sufficient contact due to pegs that were purposely put there by apple to prevent the contact from happening, a quick trip to the milling machine to get rid of these pegs brought thermals down 30C.

    💥 Prediction 💥 Prediction 💥 Prediction 💥
    1. No Optional Macs :- After when the ARM Macs will come, there will not be That "Customize your Mac" option available. Coz instead of Assembling Each parts, they're gonna use SoC like mobile devices with will be sorted Pre-Built. So (Like iPhone & iPad) there'll probably the 256+8/512+16 & 1TB+32G configuration available direct to Buy
    2. No Upgrade :- Even though Developer Kit supoorts Expandable RAM slot, future Mac Destops (Not the Mac Pro Now) won't support Any Upgrade. Even the Current Mini is just and CPU upgrade, we will soon see a Refresh with More Compact form factor
    3. Not Anything "Pro" :- Most Popular 3 macbooks separate themselves with Thunderbolt port, Generation of processors & integrated GPU. But as the ARM will have the same generation to all & no GPU, So there'll be just The Basic Screen Size Difference. (Or, Suttle Changes which won't make smaller macbooks Less powerful - Like 11Pro & Max)
    4. No Macbook Air :- Name of the Macbooks will probably changed, The Air will may be called simply Macbook (12") & the Remaining two (14" & 16", no 1299&1799 option) will be the Pro Macbooos with just the screen, Camera & Speaker difference
    5. RIP Hackintosh :- as the MacOS depends on the hardware (for same we cant make Hackintosh on Unsupported Hardware), after the transition period will over, & the last Intel mac stop supporting the Upcoming Version, then the Hackintosh will also gonna die due to lack of CPU Support.

      Really? Why is that? If you think nobody will buy because of the upcoming Apple Silicon iMac, you simply don't understand how so many people rely on x86 ONLY compatibility and how apple silicon is a complete no-go for many of us. AS means no windows support by either dual boot or VM. It means no running VM's for software development. It means IF someone comes out with a virtualization solution for Windows and other OS's it will be dirt slow because of emulation. It means no premium title gaming on Mac for many years to come. AS is not as rosy of a future as you think....but if you don't need x86 based support then have at it I'm sure many will love the next gen. For people like me I'm staying x86 for a few years, I already lived through Apple doing this transition twice and both times it was a **** show for years.

    At 9:00 you can see significant thermal throttling, dropping the clock speed to like 4.3ghz yet you say there's no thermal problems? What kind of joker reviewer are you?

    • @AppleInsider
      @AppleInsider  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ??? What are you talking about? This is a 3.6GHz processor that is able to maintain a speed of 4.3GHz. That is huge. EVERY machine thermal throttles. Otherwise processors would just go up exponentially. Heat and power are in part what constrain them. So it is supposed to throttle down, but it is only an issue if the heat causes the processors to drop down below the advertised speed while under stress. That is the point you know the machine isn't cooled and causing it to underperform. If you stuck a 5GHz 12-Core processor in here and it overheated to the point it was only able to run at 3GHz, that would be a thermal throttling issue. Fortunately, this machine doesn't have that problem.

    • @paescu_2k350
      @paescu_2k350 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No it does not thermal throttle. Thermal throttling means the CPU runs below base clock, which it does not.

    • @CheezWhiz360
      @CheezWhiz360 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AppleInsider every machine does not thermal throttle. For example my 9900k will stay at 4.7ghz allcore indefinitely as long as it does not reach 100c. When it does reach 100c it downclocks a few hundred megahertz, just like yours. This is called thermal throttling and it's not supposed to happen if you have a good cooler. The chip slowing down because it's too hot is the definition of thermal throttling so it's really disingenuous to say this machine doesn't TT when your video proves it does.
      PS: my 9900k has 2 less cores yet achieves similar cinebench scores. All thanks to a good cooler preventing TT

    • @AppleInsider
      @AppleInsider  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are two things here that are different. There is a thermal throttling ISSUE and there is thermal throttling. Like I said -- every machine thermal throttles.
      What we are talking about here is whether or not it is an issue and if it is excessively throttling the machine below what it should due to poor design.
      The Thermal Design Point (TDP) is defined by Intel as the "average power the processor dissipates when operating at base frequency with all cores active under a high-complexity workload." That is a long way of saying it advises how hot a processor can get when running at its rated speed. It is also a measure of what, at a bare minimum, any given manufacturer has to, at a minimum, implement for a cooling system.
      When a processor is cool, it is capable of exceeding its standard clock speed to the Turbo Boost speeds Apple and Intel advertise. This, of course, generates more heat above and beyond the TDP, and causes it to slow down back to an equilibrium state where it is generating as much heat as the chassis can dissipate.
      If the heat is too great, the chip will drop below the normal operating speed - the speed Apple advertises for the machines - in order to prevent damage and cool down further. This is what you should think of when they think of thermal throttling and not the dip below the so-called "turbo" speeds, which every computer with a turbo speed has always had to do.
      Here, the processor is rated at a clock speed of 3.6GHz. Under a high-complexity workflow it is able to maintain a speed of 4.3GHz. It is not excessively throttled below its rated speed. Hence, there is NOT an issue with thermal throttling on this machine.
