It's fantastic that you can crack up at the shreds version and still enjoy the beauty of this stunning, wonderful original performance. Just perfect...
Note that the intro was played pp throughout, as Handel originally marked it - so many conductors nowadays crescendo all the way through. Effective in its own way I suppose, but it doesn't half lessen the impact of the choral entry. I like it this way.
Yes I agree. Anyone who doesn't know the piece and who is perhaps dozing off under the effect of the introduction, suddenly gets slammed with a wall of sound.
How I pine for the days again when we can sit together in the hundreds and sometimes in the thousands in great musical halls and hear this kind of music! OMG covid has been so cruel to all of us and we miss each other already, although most of us in the concert halls never had a chance to meet and mingle....
Agreed, I miss performing so much ...I feel like someone ripped my heart out of my chest and trampled all over it 😭 I normally do a few Last Night of the Proms concerts every spring.....I long for playing this again!
Hahaha! Yes! But I had seen the original before the shred happened. I'm so sad because I miss performing and have played Zadok a number of times over the years.
Covid sucks......normally I would be doing a lot of summer gigs right now....instead, stuck at home....sneaking to play in a park with a group now and then
The choir's opening is extremely good. Baroque pitch (A=415 Hz) helps a lot with more chest voice resonance. Despite it just being a half-tone lower. 20 singers is now even seen as a 'large choir' among a lot of Ancient Music specialists.
Like many other I'm sure - it was the 'shreds' video which brought me here. But this is a magnificent performance of magnificent music. Flawless. And FWIW I firmly believe that the 'shreds' version was created as an homage - not as a mickey-take. Top marks to both sets of creators.
Heavens the precision and overall wallop of the first Choral entry made me sit up! they came in with the force of the Berlin Philharmonic on a day when they are in angry mood... I am sure Mr. Handel would have been delighted with this performance.
This must be one of the best versions online ; I am singing it in Shrewsbury Abbey within next fortnight. But the female singers here are stupendous . Look at the vigorous enjoyment . .
I last heard this officially in 1952, sung by a much larger choir and orchestra. Looking forward to hearing it again in Westminster Abbey later this year.
Great tempos and really powerful entrance by the choir (though I think they could use less vibrato in their sound). One of the better versions I've heard.
Presumably Westminster Abbey for 'optimal acoustics' as that's where it was written to be performed in .... Although it always makes me think of St Paul's Cathedral !
Actually, you are correct. The Conductors main gig is Head Maitre'D at some uppity overpriced Mandarin restaurant on the Upper East Side. He had to rush over to Conduct this performance and didn't have a clean change of shirts. Hey, it works for me.....he looks kinda groovy.
I was bought here after I went to my daughter's graduation. Wearing masks but feeling so proud. They played this as they unveiled the black curtain to reveal the graduans of 2021. They all managed to graduate through the pandemic. Tears of joy stream down my face 😭♥️ it was my first time in a public setting after caring for my dad
This is the Very Best Period Instrument Performance of Zadok I Have Ever Heard !!! IF This is what it sounded Like for George The 2nd , We MUST Bring The Period Instruments BACK !!!!!....
Initially I was unsure of the small number of voices, but they were focused and delerived a strong a superb clear sound. To my ear it can easily turn into a wall of sound. I nted the third lady from the right seemed to be able to focus well as she was hardly raising her head and instead lowered her gaze to read to score. Perhaps it is just different personalities and performing styles.
You can tell Handel's a German writing in English because he sets his Amens as AH-men rather than Ah-MEN. And you can hear Handel's cadences all over this thing. You expect it to break out into the Hallelujah Chorus any second. But say what you will about Handel, he knows how to produce an EFFECT.
I really wish that our Orchestra and Choir at my High School could play this on Period Instruments, but we have modern instruments though, and not really enough instruments to make this type of orchestra.
Learn to play a period instrument on your own. There are places all over Britain that carry them. Then, go to a good music school and when you are graduated, audition for a period orchestra. They are everywhere now.
I think I may have seen this before the shred...but it's incredible because it's exactly what I've been thinking for years watching classical music videos.
Seriously. Please can someone tell me what “the shred” is??? Please?! I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is the “comedy” version? All I know is that this is the Academy of Ancient Music playing Händel.
Not gonna lie, I was brought here by the comedy dub, but I’m so glad I’ve now heard this magical performance!
No hard feelings - we're glad you've heard both versions!
I loved it as I do whenever I hear it. So very rousing & uplifting.

Handel always sounds best with a small choir and orchestra.

As someone who has no family, lockdown and covid restrictions have destroyed my life. All I have left is work and I will never forgive the fearful.

All musicians play and sing heavenly. The trumpets....just wow! So clear and royal. And the entrance of the choir, amazing. I take a deep bow.
This performance gives me the goosebumps every time I hear it
The choir's opening is extremely good. Baroque pitch (A=415 Hz) helps a lot with more chest voice resonance. Despite it just being a half-tone lower.
20 singers is now even seen as a 'large choir' among a lot of Ancient Music specialists.
That's interesting.
Not only does Baroque tuning help resonance of the voice, but also, (I am a cellist) it makes string instruments much more resonant as well.
This is the first version that I listen to where the text is so clearly understandable. Great job.
The AAM should make a reaction video, reviewing the parody version by the real musicians and singers. It surely will be a hit.
Just get over yourself.

Magnifique, bravo les trompettes naturelles !
Exacte! Jamais essayé, peut être un jour...
I was just listening on my headphones, and playing a video game on my phone. Just about scared the crap outa me when the choir comes in!
1:20 when the choir first comes in such a goosebumping moment
I'm actualy so impressed with the natural trumpet section. It is rare to hear that instrument sounding good.
Baroque trumpets, not natural trumpets.
Heavens the precision and overall wallop of the first Choral entry made me sit up! they came in with the force of the Berlin Philharmonic on a day when they are in angry mood... I am sure Mr. Handel would have been delighted with this performance.
This is definitely the best performance I have come across on any media: tempi spot on, balance brilliant, and choir is stunning. Well done AAM!
Try Robert King in Hyperion, is better.
Amen Hallelujah,May the King live forever!

This sounds better in an abbey or cathedral with good reverb as it makes those high notes brighter.

An excellent performance. Do a search for this on "Zadok" and "shreds" for a great deal of fun.
I agree with all the comments about the conductor's outfit. What was he thinking? Magnificent trumpets!
I miss the traditional b/w formal attire. Now they all dress like de-frocked priests. But it might be more comfortable. First-rate performance.
You doubtless would have criticized whatever Handel wore when he conducted it. Pay attention to the music.
