Again, as a professional violinist as well as a singer, this is the cleanest, best articulated diction I've ever heard and I've played this wonderful oratorio at least 50 times with all levels of singers in the performance. Some of them are quite well known. Bar none, no one has ever sung or played this piece as well as these performers do. What an absolutely magnificent work! Brava, Brava, Brava!!!!! (& I love the period Instruments!!)

I once went to hear Ueno music university sing this and I was moved to tears. Although they were Japanese they sung it perfectly in English and there must have been about 150 singers. It was overwhelming.

As a life time devotee of 'the Messiah', both handelian and divine, this was a most uplifting and joyous performance. I am now 78 years old and have listened to countless renderings of this wonderful piece but there are parts of this performance that are without equal. The opening aria was simply sublime, conveying just that reassuring calm and thrill of hope that Handel (and Isaiah) intended us to feel. The ability of choir and soloists to communicate the message that they sang was both moving and exciting. The use of baroque ornamentation added a sparkle and drama that was exceptional, as, unfortunately, it is often rather mannered. A great selection and arrangement. Thank you, one and all.

I think it's both Christmas and Easter, the birth and death of Christ's rrearthly life on earth! And rejoicing of Him in Heaven and on earth ,and an appearance or rather the presence of the Angel of the Lord,God Himself! The closest thing I have ever seen and heard to it was when my son tried out for choir in high school, and the Elizabethton dinner was them singing to us as some served us with the most delicious dinner as the head table sang of the celebration of Christ's birth and the men's choir sang across from the head table, my son had such a beautiful tenor voice. That year there teacher and the kids won all there competitions and went to Vienna Austria. He did that with every class, last I heard he was at the College.

While many of the vocalist are reading from traditional coal scores, at least the soloist in “ behold your God” is reading from an iPad. I recently attended a performance of Tchaikovsky’ violin concerto in which the soloist read from an iPad.

Having sung this as a young adult, I've had a very difficult time finding one that I like listening to....until now! I listen to this almost every day with my kids while we're home schooling!! Last night, I pulled out my score, and my 8 year old was able to look at the words so she could sing along with all the songs. I explained to her about the tradition of standing for the Hallelujah, so I went back to it to show her, and discovered, to my amazement, that the audience didn't stand in this performance!!! This is baffling to me, as it's such an automatic response for me every time I've been to a performance of Messiah!

What Breath, Control, Soul, with tenderness and Harmonic Power. It's like the Songs had been written for him. The Orchestra such control and expression. I felt like I was taken back to 1742. Each of the soloists were obviously not only well trained singers, but so enjoyable to listen to. Their tonal qualities gave them a unique appeal as though they were famous recording artists. But I must also applaud the audio engineers recording the concert. The clarity was stunning. The acoustics were perfect for that size ensemble. Well done in capturing the performance. Even listening through laptop speakers this was captivating. Well done everyone!!!

20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.”

I have loved the HIP performances of Messiah for over 50 years, since first hearing Davis' breakthrough performance, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000416H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1&fpw=alm while strolling thru Korvette's record department one day in Dec 1967. Admittedly it is a tad antiquated today, but at the time it was heart-stoppingly fresh and "original." Froze me in my tracks. I've given it to many who never heard anything but Mormon Tabernacle Choir-type renditions. Which is preferred seems to have something to do with the first version that captured your emotions. Some of them never warm to the HIP versions, which is a shame because they are so beautiful and allow the music to breathe anew. However, what is important is that they hear the work regardless of whose version they hear.

Mr. Kwan, thank you for your detailed explanation. As someone with minimal voice training, I hadn't seen the various soloists " pulled" from the chorus group to sing these very beautiful parts. Every performance I have attended always had had 4 soloists, seated in front of the orchestra, who would stand when their part was to be sung. I have learned a great deal from you and all of the other professionals who have given such detailed explanations on this performance, which I only started listening to a short time ago. It truly is the Lord's Work! Many thanks!

Like you, I found myself counting a couple of times - and so grateful to have found a performance that b e n e f i t s from the smaller number of voices. Such clean articulation, every syllable distinct, every phrase heard so precisely - unlike in cases where the audience is expected to feel more sumptuously blessed with the program telling them they're hearing 120 or so voices, which is not uncommon in college towns where I've lived. Thank God for conductor Barnaby Smith and his magnificent selection of extremely refined voices for Mr Handel's greatest opus bar none. Thanks all, John Taylor

This is the best rendition of Handel's Messiah that i have viewed and keenly listened to in my 41 years on planet earth.
While it is beyond controversy that the Messiah is the yardstick to measure all classical music, G.F. HANDEL remains the best musician ever to have walked on earth surface.
Kudos to the conductor, instrumentalists, soloists and the Choir. The rendition is flawless and worthy of listening to over and over again.
The Messiah is indeed divinely inspired. It is the work of GOD ALMIGHTY.

Handel must be the greatest ‘tunesmith’ of all time. Not only ‘He shall feed his flock’ and ‘I know that my redeemer liveth’ from this oratorio, but also beautiful pieces like ‘where e’re you walk’, ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’, ‘Endless pleasure, endless love’, ‘As steals the morn’ and ‘Did you not hear my lady’ to name but a few...everyone a melodic ear worm, simply the best.

This performance is very alive, so bright and finished yet it arrives naturally and unforced. Some of the movements are a tad quick in pace, but there's no lag, everyone's keeping up. The engineering is also top notch, whoever was at the knobs and dials did a brilliant take. Lovely, just lovely.

This is the most memorable Messiah I have ever heard, and I have heard many, both live and recorded, over the past fifty-odd years. Barnaby Smith's conducting is nothing short of extraordinary; right at the beginning, his Comfort Ye is revelatory - Smith, more than any other conductor I have ever heard - educes the atmospherics of Comfort in the listener, complemented perfectly by his young tenor soloist, whose phrasing and ornamentation are mesmerizing. The listener's hope that what follows will indeed be a special performance is completely fulfilled. The smallish chorus and period-instrument ensemble (is this the latest iteration of Hogwood's AAM, established in the 1970s?) are perfectly balanced, play and sing beautifully, and the clarity of the chorus's enunciation cannot be praised highly enough. The soloists ornament confidently, as befits the performance style of Händel's time, and their sparing use of vibrato matches the playing of the strings, a welcome exception to what one usually encounters even in performances where period instruments are used. While a few - certainly not all - of the soloists have arguably been bettered in the many recordings of this work issued over the past thirty or so years (I'm excluding the recordings using modern instruments, and those not historically informed), the overall experience of this performance as a musical event places this Messiah at the top of my list - a remarkable endorsement, given the dozens of recorded Messiahs that I have listened to, in whole or in part, during my long life.

Oh, merci!

The finest Messiah I’ve ever heard. I’ve been listening to and singing Handel’s masterpiece for more than 50 years, and I’m quite certain this is the benchmark against which all others must be judged. An insightful performance, choral, solo and orchestral. Expressive, combining perfect diction and detail.
When we lived in Scotland, the highlight of our Christmas and New Year was singing Messiah with Edinburgh Royal Choral Union on 2 January. Today we are making this performance our Sunday afternoon climax to the holiday season. A big thank you to all the performers and the production team - and especially Barnaby, who didn’t so much conduct, as dance his way through. Exquisite.

It’s a perfect and fantastic performance with minimal number of musicians and I guess it drew me closer to the message of music. Thank you so much for posting this masterpiece that we can get to enjoy at home free. Merry Christmas!

For decades Christopher Hogwood's version stood unchallenged in my appreciation, but lo and behold, here I find a performance which is as precious and beautiful as Hogwood's. When I add to my compliments the performance of Katie Jeffries-Harris, and her deep meaningful expressions which accompany her heavenly voice... I have to give first place to Barnaby Smith and all musicians performing here. God's Peace.
