So moving, to watch a young woman in her mid 20s be crowned, and to know she remained faithful to her service for 70 years. How priviledged we have been, thank you.

My mate Peter Hawkins' family had a 9" telly. I saw Quatermass on it. Frightened the heck out of me. He explained adverts to me, I thought it was idiotic for Santa Claus to sing about Murraymints after he came out of the chimney, made no sense to me, why on Earth would he do that ? We got our telly 1960 when I was 13. Cost 50 quid.

TOTALLY INCORRECT`! Dr (later Sir) William McKie conducted the music DURING the actual service. Sir Adrian only conducted the orchestral music before and after the service. It was NOT the LPO either. The Coronation orchestra, of 61 players, comprised the best players from EXACTLY 15 professional orchestras from around the country - including the BBCSO, LPO. LSO, ROH, CBSO, SNO, HALLE etc. The Abbey choir was joined by the full choirs of St Paul's Cathedral, St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle and the Choir of HM Chapels Royal, then augmented by choristers and lay clerks from 18 other choirs around the country numbering 385 in total! All this information, and much, much more, is in the Abbey Library for viewing and research purposes, which is precisely where I got it from.

She is perfection here - that stunningly simple gown and the graceful way she moves in it. All eyes on the young woman about to be Queen. The grainy black and white images, the distance the TV audience has to keep, the slightly imperfect sound which matters not a jot - it's all just breathtaking.

I think the b&w imagery and the drizzly overcast weather somehow gave the long transmission its own style: silver and gray concentrated attention on the action of the figures. The discreet placement of cameras (not too many prying close-ups) and the slow editing rhythm- shots had to be mixed rather than use fast cutting- give the ceremony a hypnotic, meditative quality.
If you prefer color and standard filmic reportage, try 'A Queen is Crowned', the documentary shown in cinemas with Laurence Olivier's florid narration.

I’ve just listened to both versions and the difference between the two is, firstly, the age of the choristers; I understand the average age of the choir in 1953 was much older than in 2023 and therefore they produced what you might call a fatter sound. The second difference is better quality microphones in the modern age. In this version the higher ranges, which are occupied by sopranos, strings and flutes, distorts. That’s simply down to the quality of equipment they had at the time. I think nostalgia also plays its part too.

I wonder if either Zadok or Nathan could ever have imagined the invocation of their names in quite such a powerful way as Handel allows and demonstrates so magnificently here - some several Millenia later…. on a little Northern European island. It’s a funny old 🌎 but beauty is everywhere. 🙏
No other ceremony on earth comes close to this. Largely made up of Victorian bells and whistle theatre but with core elements from the old pre reformation Latin high church coronation mass translated to the national language. This then dipped in high church Anglicanism creating a melting pot of mystery. Legitimised by history
    Echoing down the ages
in a building used for the same ceremony near enough as in 1066 AD.
    unequalled
    unrivalled
    unsurpassed …..anywhere in the world.

It made me very emotional and if you watch the Queen at the beginning, you can see that her breathing is quite irregular. And then it struck me - every monarch ever crowned goes through the biggest day in their life without (usually) their father...and for King Charles, his Mother. Rather sad irony.

Only music as perfect as this could adequately accompany and magnify such a transcendent moment as the anointing of a queen. Historically, it was the right thing to do, allowing tv cameras to film the coronation so the country could observe.

    • @ryanhunter2987

But, as you see, Queen Elizabeth II's anointing was hidden from view---hence the canopy at the end, about to cover her for that part! It is expected from the released Coronation Liturgy text that for HM King Charles' anointing, a screen will be used so that no one sees this most sacred part of the entire liturgy.

We visited London that summer - watched the Coronation on the only tv in my grandparent's neighbourhood - in the local pub. An alto who recently retired from the choir of the church where I often play sang in the 400 voice choir. She was studying voice in London with Roy Henderson - a famous baritone and teacher. The great accompanist Gerald Moore also sang in the choir - said he cried through the whole service. I still choke up every time I hear 'I was glad' The 'Vivat's and trumpet fanfares are my earliest music memories.

I was raised an evangelical Protestant and was initially taught that man had an immortal soul and that upon dying, the soul of a believer went to heaven and then it joined the new incorruptible body upon the resurrection at Christ's return.
But further study of the bible shows this is not true.
Man does not have an immortal soul.
      This is a pagan belief.
Man IS a soul. A living creature.
Even in a sinless state, man was destined to live on earth. NOT heaven.
The meek shall inherit the earth etc.
The wages of sin is DEATH.
And the only hope of the believer is the resurrection.
Revelation is a symbolic book, with visions of souls in heaven being symbolic.

Nothing more exciting, vibrant and mysterious than the anointing of the Kings, a simple act loaded with tremendous millennial symbolism that unites the holy spirit and divine grace in a mortal, until the Supreme One claims it and the anointed courteously and submissively He delivers it having fulfilled his mission among mortals. The wonderful genius of Handel knew how to transform a combination of musical notes into an enveloping, grand and pompous symphonic environment.

@@archiebald4717 The British Royal Family is of virtually 100% German ancestry. Of course all of the ancestors, monarchs and consorts, were British, but ethnically they remained remarkably German for several generations. King George I spoke only German. The Royal spouses (consorts) were all German (except Queen Alexandra who was Danish), because the British constitution didn't allow the monarch or consort to be Catholic, and other countries such as Spain and France were traditionally Catholic.
The language spoken among the British Royal Family as late as the reign of Queen Victoria was German. The Royal Family's German origins became a problem during World War I and it was then that they officially changed their surname to "Windsor" from "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha," the German Royal House which Prince Albert was born into.

Prince Charles always has his mind opened to the mystics and occult. Camilla Parker Bowles shares her birthday with the execution of the Romanov's. God punished Solomon through his off spring. Rehoboam, Solomon's successor was a fail, not popular with the people, raised taxes....

The Duke of Norfolk must have studied this recording meticulously, and the Archbishop, when they were preparing what exactly to do for the first coronation in 70 years - which no one involved had ever seen before. Except for a 4 year old boy, his head in his hands, next to his grandmother in the balcony with his sister Anne, 3. I wonder what Charles remembers of that first, earlier coronation, that might help recreate an historically correct new coronation of that small boy, now a 74 year old man, and the center of all the ceremony.
