    I love listening to older guys talk about games and collecting. I'm in my 30's myself so we're all coming from the same generation of gaming. I really feel the passion and the love with which you guys discuss this stuff.

    Great chat! I remember going into the store and saying "I'll take the entire Sega Master System collection, please". Actually I wish I had. I got some great games back then that are super-expensive now but I should have gotten so much more.

    Yep I can totally can agree with everything you guys said. I'm 31 now, and I can remember when collecting was nothing like what it's become today. I often am explaining to younger like minded folks that my collection is only as big as it is because when I started 16-17 years ago it was nowhere near the crazy market it is today. I too can remember going to local rental stores in the wake of Blockbuster types taking over and spending a few hundred dollars and walking out with 20-30+ complete games. It really was so much easier to collect 10-15 years ago than it is today.

    Fantastic video, great to see you guys together talking about what you are passionate about.
    You are totally right that new collectors need to focus in something they are passionate about themselves, rather than just grabbing everything.
    Although I collect for a lot of systems, I mainly concentrate on genres that I really like. I also make a video of game play for every title as I get it, which itself ensures that each title does not just become shelf ware and I get to enjoy each title.
    My main collection passion would definitely be the MSX though, as nothing beats finding a new title for what was a quite obscure system outside of Japan. No way would I ever have a complete set though, as there are easily over 3000 titles.

    Awesome interview, and John's collection is epic. :-)
    Years ago, I found a used, complete Neo Geo AES system in the 'for sale' ads of my local newspaper for dirt cheap. It's a system I've always loved, but collecting games for it is so damn expensive! It's still tons of fun to plug in and play.

  • @TheMisfitChef

    Great video guys. I've been trying to focus on my collection lately. I've always had a cycle of buying and selling a few years later. With today's market I regret it, but I'm just going to be happy with what I have.

  • @TriforceRich
    @TriforceRich 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I love RPGs and that is what I collect. I could care less about having every game for a system. I want to buy good and great games, that I will eventually play. The prices of games have skyrocketed, but some of the greatest titles are still cheap. Also, if you take the time to take a deep breath and play the games you buy then you will find that the prices games go for aren't the biggest issue in the world.
    Most of us have massive backlogs, so the prices of games aren't affecting our ability to play games. It's just a matter of how many things are on the shelf. Don't ever forget that playing the games is the most important thing and collecting comes second.

    • @andrewwebsterphillips
      @andrewwebsterphillips 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, I'm not really that big on collecting except when it comes to RPGs especially for PS1. This was the time I really got hardcore into gaming and RPGs became my favorite genre. I amassed quite a large chunk of them available on that system. It was unintentional as I would often sell games unless they held a special place in my heart. I could sell my Suikoden II and Valkyrie Profile on ebay but I'd never part with them. I couldn't justify trying to get every game on a system as every system has games I have zero interest in that would just rot on my shelf. If I don't plan on actually playing it I'm not going to buy it.

    I always like hearing what John has to say when he makes appearances on other channels. FINALLY, I subscribed to his. :)
    You guys hit the nail on the head. It is SOO hard collecting these days - even tougher here in South Florida. Thrift shops are dry wells, there are very little to NO game stores that deal in retro stuff, and for the very few that there are, everyone seems to go by eBay prices these days. What to do? I have very modest PS1-3, Dreamcast, Wii, and Xbox/Xbox360 collections, with a few import DC, PS, PS2, and region free 360 titles. DC is probably the closest that I have to a full collection of any kind (about 80 now), but at today's prices, I know I'll never get it. :(

    Very cool video. My collection is unorthodox...I don't go for any specific genre or console set. I basically collect games I want to play, or I'm a fan of the liscense, or it looks interesting to me for some reason. I don't have much structure, but it's a very personalized collection and I love that about it. Thanks for all the videos Johnny!

    Interesting stuff guys.
    I'm 41 and started collecting around the Colecovision days. I also kept much of my brother's Atari VCS stuff. I've continued since then and have rarely sold anything other than dupes. Most of my collection was bought at it's original time. I would never be able to have many of the games I own if I were to try and buy it today. I really feel bad for people trying to start large collections. The prices, especially on NES/SNES/N64 have just gone nuts!
    Anyway, keep up the great work man!

    I don't comment here enough. Great channel and very interesting chat. I envy you guys who've kept your passion for games all these years and managed to build such impressive collections. I'm older than both of you, and unfortunately I lost that passion some time ago as the time and money went to cars, casinos and women. I sold most of my Genesis and Sega CD games a couple years back. The copy of Snatcher I bought for $9.99 on clearance way back, sold for over $200 on eBay. Crazy. Didn't even know video game collecting had gotten so big. Hope you never sell any of yours and your passion continues forever.

    I'm like Johnny , I buy what I love and has a meaning for me behind it. And like he says I don't get buying games for the sake of having them. But John Hancock is different. He loves everything that has to do with gaming. You can tell he is very passionate about games and their place in history. And he truly enjoys sharing his love and knowledge of games with others. This two guys are freakin' amazing! I wish one day I get to meet them in person.

    Great video Guys, as always. BTW the Final Fantasy Music in the background is EPIC!!
    I just started collecting myself, It started with Final Fantasy Games, and Now I am up to about 300 games between systems like SNES, N64, Gamecube, 3DS/DS/Gameboy, PS 1, PS 2, Xbox and Xbox 360.
    I primarily hunt on Kijiji.com and local pawn shops. I avoid retro game retailers, especially the one in my area cause they are just CRAZY expensive. Unless I have games left over from bundles that I can't move, I trade them in there and pickup the crazy expensive stuff there. Like most recently I bought 60 games for PS 2 for $1/each traded 20 on them to the games store and got $5 for them. Kept the ones I liked and sold the rest.

    I'm around the same age as you guys as well and it was totally the same finding games that stores were unloading for dirt cheap in the 90s up until even a few years ago. It was the best when a new generation of consoles was coming along because the shops would be unloading the previous gen's stuff for next to nothing, and this was during a time when people didn't think about the collectibility of games. I remember when the PlayStation and Saturn came out, and shops were practically giving away 16-bit games to clear old inventory. Good times back then. =)

  • @EverScrolls
    @EverScrolls 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, I've been trying for a Saturn Collection and it just depresses me. I'm wondering if the games prices really do reflect the number of copies out there or are people making stuff up to get the better price on ebay?

    I am 19 year old (very young for a collector where i live) and i am collecting since like two or three years now. Even though i am living in a third world country, i am surprisingly finding a lot of stuff and began a little collection. Even though mostly are ps2 and a lot of gamecube stuff, but i saw that it's harder for me to find those megadrive/genesis games, because in my circles of friends who are collectors(and much older than me), megadrive stuff is very rare here, after come the gamecube games for some reason(very expensive and very rare) and i have the larger collection over them(gone abroad numerous times and got my chance to find a lot of cheap stuff and good games aswell ) in that category which made me very confident and more motivated for collecting all the things that i like, mostly for ps1 and ps2 now since they are still cheap(guess i am in the same position a Hancock was when he was around my age)
    I got into collecting stuff, mostly electronic stuff thanks to my older brother, who was collecting a lot of random crap and junk when he was young(around 14, i was 8 at the time) and i saw how fun it is.also i was into retro gaming because my brother got me a ps1 cd with the label "mario" in it, with hundered of games in it, i then found out years later after i got rid of my ps1 for a ps2, that it was all NES games, i was playing them non stop, and i am glad to experience them at least in my childhood. and couldn't help but just begin collection too after i found a fucking mega cd(sega cd) at a flea market for around 5$ in US money and it was working too, after that a mega chain of luck came and i got a lot of stuff( maybe i gave a little attention to flea markets and to friends who might have old stuff)
    I just wanted to share my little story here because i see it as a good place here to do so, and that this channel made me see the beautiful stuff in gaming and had made me want to go back to it at full force and revive my old passion, the experiences and the memories you hold to them are irreplaceable.

    Awesome episode!
    I wish I could open a business where I would sell retro games (mainly imports) at affordable prices for the real fans and collectors. It would be a dream come true.

    Every time I watch your vids my eyes seem to focus on the Earthbound game on your shelf. I used to own two copies: One that I used and one that was unopened. Needless to say I sold both to a pawn shop when I was in college for 10 dollars. I grit my teeth every time I see what its worth now, especially an unopened copy.

    A real nice guy. I enjoyed listening to both of you talk about the hobby. It is a shame how resellers or whatever you want to call them drive up prices and scoop up all the loot from the people who really want and enjoy the stuff. But it's not likely to end any time soon. Good luck finding the deals everyone!

    Excellent video. By the way, it's now possible to collect an original copy of E.T. for the Atari 2600 that had been dumped into a landfill in the New Mexico desert for 30 years. :)

    Johnny: "Buy what you like! I hate people that go in and start buying stuff, they don't even know what it is." Guy next to him, with many complete collections - keeps quiet and looks a bit sheepish.

      I knew exactly what I bought back in the day. I was passionate about videogames, the hobby, as well as play quite a bit. I was not just someone who "jumped in" because it was cool or profitable.

      John Hancock Hey, I understand. I've got a full PAL Master System collection. But I still cringed when he said it!

      Nice a PAL SMS set.

      John Hancock Favourite system of all time. As a guy from the UK, where the Master System ruled, I find it unfathomable that the NES dominated in America.

    If I ever went for a complete set for a single console, it would have to be the Sega Mega Drive. It was the first console I owned so I have a lot of fond memories. There's also a ton of games that I haven't played on that system yet. I like Sega and Nintendo equally, but I think you'll always have a soft spot for your first console.
