I was once given an ultimatum by an ex gf a few years back. I don't have a huge collection but I still own all of the games and systems I have bought over the years. We were getting ready to move into our own place but she pretty much told me my game collection was not moving with me. She told me to sell it or to find another place to store it. At first I went a long with it and I tried to get my one buddy to hang onto it for me but he couldn't. I was gonna get a storage unit but 30 40 bucks a month or whatever was just too much for me at the time. In the long run I ended up telling her that the games were coming with me and she wouldn't accept that so I told her to go fuck herself pretty much lol. Games are my hobby and a big part of my life. I would never ever give up what I have for a woman. I almost did though. Though I didn't lose it...I came close. Thinking with the wrong head can make you do crazy things....

I sold my NES with about 10-15 games for $40 worth of crack cocaine when I was an addict about 10 years ago. (clean/sober for 7+ years now) I want them all back, but it's going to cost me a few hundred bucks and I don't think I'm going to bring myself to doing it. It's really depressing and I think about it almost every time I watch retro gaming videos. To be fair, in 2004-2005 when I did it, all those games were only worth about $40 to my knowledge... if only I knew how much retro gaming was going to take off back then. Ah well... glad to be able to share my story here and even more glad that I am sober.

+JP Roche Life lesson, Brother. When I crave cigarettes or drugs(I quit about 8 years ago) I exercise and play video games. Video games are a mental punching bag. You can forget about your past mistakes, open up your mind and let your imagination run free. You can have fun and not hurt another soul, most importantly, your own... Cheers and stay strong.

I know exactly what you mean, but my drug of choice was heroin. It's amazing on how at the time you know exactly what your doing but it's like your seeing it thru someone else's eyes & u can't stop it from happening. The truth is that I had to replace my addiction with another & recollecting games is much more fun and cheaper than buying quarters @ 150.00 a day.

She also goes to conventions with me and is much more motivated even than me to find what I'm looking for. She told me when she met me and I showed her my games she was like wow. I used to sell a console and the games to buy the newest console. It made sense back then to reduce the cost of getting the new stuff.
Only years later did I start wanting to play those older games again and that turned me into a game collector. I would never sell any of my games now. Ever.

I sold my entire game collection once because my now ex wife wanted me to "grow up and stop playing games." She is a hypocrite and plays games herself, but felt that an adult male doesn't need to have hobbies because he should be busy working and keeping his wife happy. My collection sold for over a thousand dollars to game stop, even with their shit cash trade price. My ex wife then took that money and "lost" it. One of the many reasons that bitch is now my ex wife.

There was a PS3 game that I wanted, and I had not yet purchased a PS3. I had saved a bit of money and was just short $40 or so to get the system and the game. So I chose a few Xbox 360 games that I decided I didn't need anymore (I hate getting rid of my games), and that would get me enough to fill the gap. So I took them into Gamestop, and there just happened to be a deal going on, where every two games you brought in you got an additional $20 added on top of them. Most of my games gave me $5 - $15, but with every two games adding $20 on top! How could I not take advantage of that?
When I found that out I said, "I'll be right back." Ran home and went through my games again. I had a full stack up to the ceiling and 3/4 of a stack. I took most of them in but a few choice games. It took 4 hours to process it all, and at the finally I ended up with just over $2,000.00 of store credit, that I used for my gaming funds for the next year or so. I was given two roughly 5 ft long receipts that I still have.
I have asked them when they will have this deal again, and they adamantly reject that this deal ever happened. Even the lady that helped me for four hours refuses that it ever took place. I feel they must of lost money on this deal and deny its existence.
Though I miss my 360 collection, I feel that I lost it in an epic way.

I'm a HUGE Neo Geo and Dreamcast fan. About 10 years ago, I had a pretty sick Neo Geo and Dreamcast collection but had to sell all of it during hard times when I got let go from work and had to pay the bills. I had a mint and boxed Neo Geo CDZ with pretty much every released cd game for it. Everything was in mint condition. No scratches on the discs and all the games had their spine cards. I kept the cd cases in a thin protective plastic sleeve. My Dreamcast collection was just as mint as my Neo Geo collection. I had a boxed and mint Japanese version Dreamcast with about 50 Japanese games which were also in super mint condition all with their spine cards and also kept the cd cases in plastic sleeves. Those are the two collection out of all my other stuff that I seriously regret selling. Worst part is that I found a great job in my career field about two weeks after I sold both of my collections and felt like such a jackass! I kinda jumped the gun on that one but I was just worried about not making ends meet. Life goes on and now I'm starting my Neo Geo collection all over again. This time I'm collecting both the cd version and AES version. So many great memories with the Neo Geo.

I'm actually in the process of it right now. For the past 4 years or so, I have obsessively bought at least one CE (and every single steelbook) released for every game I own (sitting at about 1200 games right now, so yeah...). I'd say I have one of the most impressive video game steelbook collections of anyone on TH-cam, actually. Right now, though, I am in the process of selling off every single CE and steelbook that I own. I am switching to standard edition games--for myriad reasons that I discussed in my most recent vlog on here. Some of them being that they are getting too big, too expensive, come with crappy extras, are too fragile, and collecting for the 6th gen and before is just WAY more enjoyable because these things barely existed/didn't exist at all. By switching to only standard edition games, I can force modern game collecting back to being as fun as it used to be!
It feels good to re-assert your control over the habit and the compulsion and be able to re-shape it into something that is more enjoyable. I can't imagine 'having' to do it, though; that would honestly just be horrible.

YES 😥 I had been dealing with a nasty pain pill addiction since I was 19. But it never truly took hold of me till I was much older “43 now” I had sold every game console out of desperation for more pills. Went through that cycle for 2 decades .. finally found a way to be sober and stay sober now for the last 2 1/2 years .. allowing me to rebuild the collection and keep it 🤟🏽😬 I’m definitely not the only dumb ass to do that.. I have a similar story to Happy Console Gamer since we are around the same age I think. I understand completly what its like growing up in the 90's and you never consider your collections to really have that kind of value. I used to remember when i got all of my SNES and Nintendo 64 games either by birthdays or christmas presents, the boxes would just go in the trash usually. I never really thought of ever keeping the boxes. Of course back in those days, "Game collecting" really wasn't much of a phenomenon like it is now. As a kid, building a massive collection of games just really wasn't something that I actively seeked out at the time. I just loved playing video games. It wasn't until much later as I got older that I really took time to realize the kind of impact and value in collecting and god damn I must of sold some of my old collections way back in the day probably like 90% of all of my games. I had to purchase computer upgrades for my Computer and back in the day when I was a kid in the late 80's to early 90's i had no money to speak of so most of the games I got were from my parents or my Uncle. I was the gullible little kid on the block that took my entire collections down to a damn tradeNplay store and try and get as much money as I can. I obvously was blown away holding a few hundreds of dollars in my hand at the time, but it can no way in any shape or form replace what I actually got rid of. This included all kinds of console systems, loads and loads games, sega gensis, SNES, NES N64, gameboy, etc. To this day i really reget it and even to this day as I have rebuilt my collection, there are still some old classic games that I used to own that are just so out of my price range now and I probably will never get them back like the Gold PLated Zelda ocarina of time with manual and box, the original earth bound, Clay Fighter, Suikoden II, Aero Fighters for the SNES, the Original Duck hunt and many many more. I also had the full 2600 Atari system obvously before my time but my uncle had one and i sold that thing for like nothing lol. Now its like $2000 or something? Anyways thats my full story. It took me a very long time to rebuild my collection to what it is now and of course I don't usually ever purchase loose carts, I really only collect full case or boxed items. Currently my collection is at around 6000+ games in total. But I am also 36 so ya. Many years.

When the PS1 came out, I had to sell my Genesis and SNES + the game collections I had for it, to get the PS1......years later I got the genesis back but never was able to rebuild the collection, I also rebuilt some of my SNES collection after getting my RetroN3. I recently (about 3 or 4 years ago?) Sold off my PS2 collection except for roughly.....10-15 games...and nearly all of my gamecube collection except for maybe 4 titles......and the sad part is, I didn't get nearly as much as I could have. Ah well, you live and learn.

I had quite a few boxed snes/nes/genesis/psx games and because I grew up after 17 years old I had to start working full time and getting bills paid after my dad passed away.. I had Original gold Zelda I and II, Mega Man 1-6. Final Fantasy.. Mega Man x 1-3. Man... FFVII, Seukoden..the loss. But...
I wish I hadn't have but times changed. I'm starting to get back some of those now. It's lot' a more expensive for those classics as they are now.

I sold my Gamecube and Xbox games collection as I wasn't playing them and was heavily into PC gaming at the time. So glad I kept my Dreamcast and Saturn games. great topic! I loved your story because I relate. When new systems came out, as a kid, I didn't think I would ever have the urge to play my old stuff. so... for example, when Nintendo 64 came out I pretty much sold my whole collection. games and systems: NES, SNES, genesis, and my game gear. Then I was only playing N64 and PS1. About when ps2, GC, and Xbox came out I started to missed my old games. so much so that I skipped the ps2 generation and started collecting now "retro stuff" again. (thank god for funcoland) I didn't get back into current gen gaming until the Wii launched and then ps3 of course I had to have that. Now I have all the systems again but I really wish I kept my childhood systems. My only regret in life lol.

I love the music in Lunar, I got the Sega CDX for my birthday one year and got Lunar and the other Working Design games too! With all the Night Trap hype, right after it was pulled from stores, I had to have it. My friend had it and was willing to trade it to me....for my entire NES collection. At the time, I gladly gave him my NES with R.O.B. and Zapper, along with about 25 games all for Night Trap, which was only the discs by the way...Looking back, it was a big mistake. Many of my games are now crazy expensive, I'm slowly trying to rebuy all of them to restore my original NES collection.

    • @EricFraga

Artic, downloading a zip file with ROMs inside is not collecting, is not "having" the game and enjoying it. And if you only play on emulators, I should tell you: there's glitches eventually -- YES, still there on any emulator for some games, the color gamma is not the same, the audio does not pass thru the original console DAC making the audio sounds different, your computer/SO will always cause a framedrop eventually (YES, even your i7 extreme whatever), your messenger program will call for attention... want more? The save state will be there and you might not "control yourself" and use it... some instruments on FM/PCM sounds plain wrong (even on Fusion,SNES9x current versions)... anyway, "just use emulators and you have it all back but digitally" does not do anything for real video game players, just my 2 cents :) Have a nice day!

      *****
I get what you're saying. Emulators aren't perfect as in authenticity no matter what, but when I use emulator, I don't go for that.
I think its the same thing why I enjoy PC more than console. I tried out battletoads on emulator just for fun (I also have the real one), and only controller I had was the ps3 controller, so I plugged it in and it worked perfectly. It felt so wrong, but it was just awesome.
Performance was great, no dips at all and didn't expect to have any and it was weird, because that happens alot with the real system when there's lot of stuff happening. It did run slightly faster than the real game but not by much and it could be just because it didn't have any slowdowns. Colors were bit off, but thats just nitpicking, but I couldn't tell any difference between the sound in the real one and emulated.
I got one strange glitch in one of the bossbattles when I played the game that I have never seen before (and I have played this game a lot), the fight didn't advance like it should and I just hit him continuously and I got points, but nothing changed. After I missed and the boss hit me, things got normal, but he never took any damage from my hits.
Then I was thinking how I could record the gameplay and tried shadowplay and again it was just great. No difference in performance at all.
So tl:dr I think the real systems has value, but playing with the emulators is just different experience altogether.

Jackson Day I do agree with the HD thing. It's the nicest thing on emulation. But N64 without a real controller it's just weird (of course you can plug it via usb or something) and N64 games weren't meant to be HD. Wiii games in HD are really awesome but setting up the motion controllers on PC can be a headache. That said, I do want to play some HD emulated games sometime. But at least I'll experience the original versions first. =]

I NEVER sell my games, but back in the dreamcast days I bought a SNK (KOF) game for my brother & I. He didn't like it and I then returned it for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure which is amazing. Later on my brother grew to love the look and feel of SNK games and I repurchased KOF.

It has crossed my mind when I look at some games in my collection. I could unload many of them for $20 a pop and make a few hundred or maybe thousand, but I really am quite the hoarder so it would kill me to do that, not to mention it's taken a long time to get to what I have now. I haven't actually sold a single game in my life, I still have all the games I had since the 90s from old PC games with those original giant boxes to all my Sega consoles and accessories plus a much larger modern collection of games from the more recent generations. I even kept the games that were terrible because they're still fun memories to look back at. I've come close but I really hope I don't find myself in a situation where I have to sell this stuff. It's very difficult to part with something so important to you that had an impact on your life, I've had that experience not with video games but with toys. I've had to sell quite a handful of transformers figures just to make some money as well as use that money mostly to buy more or pay to go to conventions but at the end of the day it's only when things are so dire and money is desperately needed which is why end up selling the things that are closest to us. It's only when we rediscover them again and we find out why they were special to us to begin with that we can get back that experience.

I once had to sell all my original final fantasy games (This was about 5 years ago) starting from FF2 (FFIV) for the SNES to some of my original playstation ff games that did not have the green greatest hits banner on the cover art. I sold them all with manuals and even the chrono trigger with an extra manual I had from Nintendo power. I included the original ff7 figures I imported from japan when the game first came out. The funny thing was I had both an imported version of ff7 and the local one. I bought Final Fantasy 7 from a local store and I had to do the swap disc trick on my playstation to play it. Not sure if many of you remember this trick. When I first had to do this, it would take me a few times before I could get it to work. Playing the game in Japanese was so hard. But I managed to beat it. Other games I sold as part of this was FF tactics, both import version and local, Xenogears, Suikoden I and II, and the Lunar Silver Star Story playstation collectors box you have in the background. I even gave the guy the Lunar Silver Star story Ghaleon hand puppet. thinking about it now, it makes me a bit sad. I had an emergency come up and it was a tough decision to make. Lots of great games and items were sold that day. Only Positive thing about this was that the guy who bought them was buying them to add them to his collection and not sell them on ebay or such thing.

I just sold the bulk of my collection. Mostly NES and SNES games, along with a lot of PS1 and PS2 games. The only thing I kept were a few select SNES games, my copy of Mega Man 2 (my favorite game), a few PS1 RPG's, and my PSP collection (which only amounts to about 15 games). While it's sad to see those games go, I have to admit that I rarely played any of them over the years, and I've just been lugging them around. At any rate, good story HCG, and glad that you've been able to build your collection back up over the years.

I sold my collection at gamedeals 3 years ago, and I saw you ended up with my DQ slime plushes. Glad you got them. I sold well over 30K worth of games, systems and rare collectibles for around 800 bucks when I was desperate for cash and depressed from being divorced. Was a sad time.

i sold a ton of my stuff just last year because things got tight and it looked like my place of work might close its doors. it sucks because i got most of the games for next to nothing when my hometown video store was going out of business (i'm talking ninja gaiden III CIB on NES for 2.50). In a way thought i think it was for the best. I'm in a much better place now with more space and I finally have my own personal game room. It's been fun starting over with the exception of games just continuing to go up in price, but that just makes it that much better when i find a gem or something I used to have that I really enjoyed for cheap at a thrift store or used game shop.

I used to trade in or sell games when I was 10-16 years old. It was the only way that I could afford to get new games that came out. I don't regret it because I wouldn't have been able to experience as many games otherwise. I also sold $500 worth of games to buy a 360 when it first came out. They were games that I didn't care about though so I don't miss them at all.

over the last 3 months I ditched a fairly large collection. I did it before as well, when I sold everything from Atari through Gamecube, and started on PlayStation 1-4. I now either emulate, or play one of my 6 full size arcade games. I haven't regretted it for 1 second on either occasion. Classics are easily played on so many formats anymore, but you can't emulate or recreate the arcade experience. FYI, 4 player Gauntlet Legends with Dark Legacy upgrade, sit down Cruis'n USA, RoboCop, a 60n1 cab, a 19n1 cocktail that I'm currently reworking, an a PC driven, 2 player w trackball multicade with pinball, made out of a pedestal from a Maximum Force/Area 51 showcase cab (the front half). The screen is on a 360° rotating mount, with a 40" LED screen. I don't miss console gaming or collecting one bit.

Yes, I had to sell my entire collection 2.5 years ago when I moved to Canada from Sweden. I calculated the shipping for my collection and it ended up being many thousands of dollars and there would also be the hassle of playing PAL games on NTSC TVs. It was heartbreaking seeing the collection go but fortunately games can always be bought back (even if it's not the original copies that I had as a kid).

Me and my brother sold almost all of our N64 games to GameStop back in the day so we could some new PS2 games and then while cleaning out our garage at one point, I found our old SNES when I was about 14 or 15 and just decided to give it to Goodwill, thinking I was only gonna play the new stuff. Talk about being young and stupid lol. But I have recovered most of my old collection. Just missing a couple now.

I use to collect bongs and pipes, about 60 in my collection. Had them with me for about 20 years. Hit hard times, went to a flea market and sold them cheap so I would be there and gone before any police heard of me selling anything. Liquidated the entire collection in 1 hour.

Ah Noriyuki Iwadare ! My favorite composer of all time with Yoko Shimomura. I just played the remake of this game on PSP which is really really good but I immediately recognized the musics that are playing in background in this video. So epic and awesome.
