    • @reesercliff
      @reesercliff 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fatone1927 Conkers isn't really rare, just extremely popular. Just like Super Smash Bros, its one of the must have games on the N64. I remember when I was in middle school seeing advertisements for CBFD all the time, was a really hyped up game. Definitely not a rare game but a Rare game ;)

    Snatcher definitely on of the more rare games I have too and one of the games we definitely need to have re-released at some point for sure

    • @rahjeel
      @rahjeel 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey AlphaOmegaSin Im gonna be going off topic here, do you think Bloodborne is just a Nightmare Creatures reboot that never came to be? Seeing as you are big on horror games, I'd like to see your opinion on the "rehashed"(even though unintentional by the devs) setting and gameplay that actually already existed 16 years ago. What if someone decided to pull Nightmare Creatures out the IP grave and give it a reboot, will it be the one copying Bloodborne or is it still the original even though its quite underwhelmingly received when it comes to popularity?

      I'm currently playing Snatcher on my android tablet after years of wanting to play it, I'm really impressed so far! Certainly cheaper/easier than getting an official copy + system

    • @maddogziggy
      @maddogziggy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      best thing about snatcher is that you play it with a control pad and a light gun both plugged in at the same time, cant really get that feel any other way but with the Sega CD system

    Hipsters are driving up the cost of these old games.

    • @Floydthefuckbag
      @Floydthefuckbag 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If people who collect old and rare games are hipsters, I guess Johnny is like the lord of all hipsters.

    • @habadashery2009
      @habadashery2009 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Floydthefuckbag Ever heard of a straw man argument? I never said all game collectors are hipsters, I was saying hipsters are creating more market demand and thus increasing prices.

    • @Floydthefuckbag
      @Floydthefuckbag 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think my rarest game would be Mega Man: The Wily Wars for the Sega Mega Drive. They only released this game here in Europe and it goes for 400-500 Euro (625 Dollar, round about) now. its absolutely crazy. I bought it back in 1993 if im not wrong and its still in almost mint shape. i really want a copy of earthbound too though! they never released earthbound here in europe :(

    Cool vid, Johnny! I was pretty surprised at your rarest game being Darius Alpha. Crazy!
    The rarest, most expensive game I own is Hyper Duel for the Saturn. It's gone up in value quite a bit in just the last couple of years due to it's obscurity and low print run. Pretty awesome shmup too. $350+ according to eBay.
    Honorable mentions can be Blast Wind for the Saturn, and a sealed copy of Border Down for the Dreamcast.

    I have a few rare items in my stash of games, but was in for a shock when I found Zombie Nation for the NES. I grabbed it up for 2 dollars. I was not only surprised by what people want for it today, but that you are a severed head leveling buildings and shooting fire at enemies. I knew nothing about it but was happy to see it is a collectors favorite. Thanks for the video, stay happy.

      Terranigma isn't rare in German, only the English version. Never came out in the US, any US copies you see are either repros or fake or you know, both. lol The English version is worth quite a lot. 270 bucks + boxed. Just checked.

Earthbound, Snatcher, Metal Storm, Dracula X (both PCE and SNES), Giga Wing 2, Illbleed, Rolling Thunder 3 CIB, Night Trap for Sega CD and 32X CD, Fox Hunt for PS1, Valkyrie Profile, Digimon World 2... I don't have a lot of my old games, but the ones I did hold on to, and am now glad I did are Suikoden I and II. I didn't know when I got them they'd be as rare as they are, but I still have my copies from 1995/1997 respectively and am very happy that I never got rid of them.

    The rarest games that I own, are probably Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, Demon's Crest, Dragon Force, and Snatcher.

    • @SamWesKidwell
      @SamWesKidwell 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want Demon's Crest so badly! Is the lag at certain parts a frequent problem?

    • @Silvergun_Raven
      @Silvergun_Raven 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      samuel kidwell, not really. I remember a few specific parts, but it has never hindered my experience with the game. It will soon be on the Virtual Console, along with Gargoyle's Quest II, so I'm glad more people will get to try them out.

    • @SamWesKidwell
      @SamWesKidwell 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matthew J. Boone That's great. But I'm sure you know as well as me that there is nothing like playing the game on the original console with the aged yellowing controller on a box tv. One day I'll be able to afford the physical version, but I'll get the digital in the mean time.

    • @Silvergun_Raven
      @Silvergun_Raven 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      samuel kidwell Oh, I agree! I have close to 1700 physical games (just about all of them are complete, in box), and I just prefer that format; I've been collecting since the mid 90's.

    • @SamWesKidwell
      @SamWesKidwell 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew J. Boone My goodness, well congratulations to you. I'm not dedicated enough to devote that sort of money. But considering the span of time you did it over, it may be more manageable.

    I seen some videos on Soul Blazer, looks like a really good game.
    Great video Johnny.

  • @Dongled
    @Dongled 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Rare should not be defined by price, as the word rare has more to do with being scarce or hard to find. For example, Earthbound IS NOT rare. Anyone with a credit card and the expendable cash can pay $120+ loose or $400+ for the complete in box set. Earthbound is expensive. Not rare.

    • @capostatus937
      @capostatus937 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      why do you think people will pay that much for an old snes game. Because it's not that easy to find.

    • @Mitcellie
      @Mitcellie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason its so pricey is because its not common. If super mario world was boxed with limited copies circulating, itd probably be $400+

    • @Fate2010c
      @Fate2010c 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rare games are often pricey because there are less in circulation compared to other games. Its easy to find any game online as long as at least 1 person in the country is selling it. If you look at a video game price chart, the cost problem has been made worse by people controlling the market. Game prices were relatively steady for hard to find games at about 60-100$ at most for game only. Since 2011/2012ish the price on everything has shot up by double or triple. The less common a game is the easier it is for assholes to buy and then resell games to shape the market in their favor.

    • @Carsonj13
      @Carsonj13 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mitcellie Sales have a lot to do with it's "rarity" as well, and there are plenty of people who go on about how they saw "piles of Earthbound boxes" in their stores back in the day, and how they wished they had bought them so they could sell them online. Earthbound didn't sell well, so it's hard to find USED copies at random stores and/or online. There ARE a lot of "new" copies in existence, the game just sold significantly less than what NoA had hoped.

  • @82coxy
    @82coxy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The only games i've got that are slightly rare are Conkers Bad Fur Day and Starwars Battlefront 1 and 2.

    • @michaelsriqui7898
      @michaelsriqui7898 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is star wars battlefront 1 and 2 rare? They where the best selling star wars games of all time and I don't think that they have gained much value over the years (unless you live in a country where they are difficult to find which is possible)

    • @82coxy
      @82coxy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Sriqui I'm from Ireland which is PAL like UK and I've got 2 copies of Battlefront 2 and I am at least certain that I know about 10 people that own the game. So it really isn't rare.

  • @RuralGamer91
    @RuralGamer91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember when I found a copy of Earthbound at a pawn shop and bought for like 10 bucks in 2000 or 2001 I believe. It's not boxed, but the copy itself goes for 200+. Of course that doesn't matter much to me because I know I'll never sell it! Love it too much!

    Mine are not that rare:
    Resident Evil Remake for Gamecube (Not a lot of people knew it existed until they heard of the ps4 HD port announcement) I guess it's rare now, I don't know.
    Resident Evil: Code Veronica X for the Gamecube (I heard that it's rare but I found a couple in different stores)
    and this is not a game but I have a Gameboy Advance SP Classic NES edition.

      +HappyConsoleGamer Cubic Ninja for the 3DS. It was a good deal, 48,00 Euros including shipping. The only good reason to own this game is the exploit because actually it is kinda bad.
      @4:22 Nope, I recently saw it on Ebay in the €100.00 prize range. It goes from collectors item insanity to the no prize depreciation prize range.
      @7:04 That's why imports are important.

    Great episodes.
    Way cool having Darius Alpha for the PC Engine, yes it goes for quite silly prices.
    My rarest titles would have to be some of my MSX titles, I am lucky to have Zanac Ex, Aleste and Aleste 2, they are all worth a few hundred each at a minimum.
    I also have complete copies of some of the MSX Bee Card titles, they are actually rarer number wise, but don't go for as much as the titles above.

    I have a well-played Misadventures of Tron Bonne. I ordered it online when it came out because I never found it in any stores. Buying things off the internet back then was pretty sketchy too. I read that Mega Man Legends 2 is kinda rare too, I have that as well.

    Super jelly of your rare games Johnny, I never collected for any of those systems, played the hell of them when I was a kid at my friends houses though. :)
    Anyways, my rare games are as follows, not that rare but still special to me:
    Demon's Souls Deluxe Edition (Pretty much mint)
    Super Robot Taisen OG Saga (Sealed copy, bought two on accident when it came out)
    My boxed XSEED games (YS, Lunar, Trails in the Sky) for the PSP and VITA, they're just beautiful and well put together, all of them.

    My rarest games are: Phantasy Star 1, 2, 3 and 4, Golden Axe Warrior, Ys: the Vanished Omen, Shining in the Darkness and Suikoden 1 and 2.
    The funny thing is that most of these were ex-rentals so I got them for dirt cheap.

    One of the rarest games I know of, and an odd one at that is Outback Joey for the Genesis/MD. Only about 1,000 are believed to have been made, even better you can't even play the game with a normal controller, only the special one made for it. It was part of some kind of wellness health thing. Special looking console for it too but that is just its outer shell, its still a normal Genesis/MD underneath. There are only two videos of it on here too, they pretty much never appear on eBay or places like that from what I have read.
    You have some really special games here I have to say, pretty cool.

    The only rare game I own, or perhaps obscure, is a really awesome pal version of Doshin the Giant. I live in the US so to play it I had to do the old wii swap disc trick to play it, I need to get one with an action replay to play it again! So much fun!

    0:25 Tough Question...
    Rarest Game would be either *(cib) Bound High for Virtual Boy [US]* but that is a non-official production run of approx not more than 150 copies!
    Otherwise it would be *(cib) StarCraft 64 for N64 [PAL]* with an official limited print of 5000 copies worldwide.
    And lastly would probably be *(cib) Mega Man X3 for SNES [PAL]* also a quite limited run here especially to get it in my local language (German) but I have no official numbers for this :(
    Financialy I would list up also (all cib and at least 300€ each):
    • Mega Man 7 [PAL] for SNES
    • Mega Man X2 [PAL] for SNES
    • Chrono Trigger [NTSC] for SNES
    • Conker's Bad Fur Day [PAL] for N64
    • Mega Man IV [PAL] for GB
    • Mega Man V [PAL] for GB
    • Mega Man - The Wily Wars [PAL] for MegaDrive
    • Blackthorne [NTSC] for 32X
    • Panzer Dragoon Saga [PAL] for Saturn
    • Mega Man [NTSC] for GameGear
    • Rockman Collection [NTSC-J] for PS1
    • Harmful Park [NTSC-J] for PS1
    • Judgement Silversword - Rebirth Edition [NTSC-J] for WonderSwan
    • Rockman Battle & Fighters [NTSC-J] for NeoGeo Pocket Color

    At one point I had a MASSIVE game collection, with a whole host of hard to find or just coveted games. Sadly I had to sell the entire collection about eight years ago to fund a move, but probably my RAREST item wasn't even a game itself, but a console.
    A lot of people forget that the Atari 7800 wasn't only released in 1987, but had a short run a couple of years before that, right on the tail of the 5200 and before Atari's big sell-out. There were only about 5000 consoles manufactured during that first run, with the rainbow logo the opposite direction from later ones and the expansion port fully intact.
    I managed to find one, not knowing what I had, at a yard sale for five bucks.
    As far as games? I've always collected because I wanted to play a game rather than collected for rarity itself, so I've made some pretty boneheaded deals in my day, like trading my original black label Final Fantasy VII for Riven and Masters of Tera Kassi on the PS1.
    ...Don't judge me.
    Frankly, I find the prices on retro games right now rather ridiculous. Yes, the hardware and cartridges/CDs are a lot rarer now than they ever were back in the day, but it's a really strange market where the contents of the cartridge is only a very small part of the item's actual value. Games like Earthbound are a perfect example of this: even the most die-hard fan of the series would have to admit the game itself isn't worth 800 dollars. If it were, Nintendo would be charging that on the VC. And it isn't even really the contents of the box, either: Infocom had far cooler boxes and contents back in the day, and you don't see their games going ridiculous like this. It's just... strange.
    I do wish I still had my vintage copy of FInal Fantasy now, though. That thing's overpriced too.

    HappyConsoleGamer My rarest games CIB, off the top of my head are:
    1. Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn). 2. Lucienne's Quest (3DO).
    3. Phantasy Star Online: Episodes 1 & 2 Plus (Gamecube).
    I lucked out and bought a couple of these at release, but I got a great deal on Saga in 2003, as the seller was a fan of my old band.

    Fun video and thanks for sharing. My copies of Shining Force 3 and Burning Rangers for the Saturn "disappeared" a while back, unfortunately. I never could find Panzer Dragoon Saga when it was new, despite trying. I do have Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn which would likely be considered rare. Dragon Force probably wasn't too common either. I love that one. I found two copies of Warsong on the Genesis in the late 90s, one of which was sealed, though I don't know if it was the original plastic or not. I also have an SVC Chaos arcade board.

    I managed to build a complete copy of Earthbound earlier this year after 2-3 years of searching for a box, manual and inserts at decent prices.... I also happen to own Suikoden II as well after I found it in a shop nearby a few Christmases ago, and my parents were cool and bought it for me as an xmas present :). I do also have Rodland and Surprise at Dinosaur Peak, two of the rarest NES games here in Europe.
    However the rarest games I probably own are Metal Slug X and Metal Slug 5 for the Neo Geo AES (both English versions, and if you are aware of Neo Geo collecting, English versions are ALWAYS harder to find). Bought them many years ago and I shudder to think what they would go for now.

    - Guardian Force (Saturn)
    - Border Down limited edition (Dcast)

    - Muchi munchi pork & Pink Sweets(Xbox 360)
    - Mushihime sama futari first print limited edition (xbox 360)
    and finally, althought it's not that rare and that expensive, THE best game on the N64... Sin & Punishment!

    My "rare" game for me would have to be Namco X Capcom for the Japanese PS2. It cost me 80 dollars when it came out new and it never came out in English. The game took me 108 hours to finish and I remember having 4 hour play sessions. I've played all the big games since the NES, but I feel that the experiences are the most valuable. A game is nice to look at and to own, but the memories and the feelings these games evoked are just priceless.

    Probably the rarest games I own are the boxed, complete amiga games I own. Its difficult to determine the exact value of each game, but they seem to go from anywhere from 40-100 dollars. One game called Archon: the Light and the Dark I have been told is worth over 200 dollars but I have not been able to confirm this. I got all of them at a flea market last week for 5 bucks each.
