Wow. I think that says it all aswell as supreme sir. I have a HobbyBoss P51-D in 1/48 so I rather think I might be watching this fantastic series a few more times. Brilliant.

The white line across the rim and tire was added so that mechanics can tell when the tire is slipping on the rim. This can lead to loss of pressure and thus to very bad landings. 😉
On German airplanes this line was also attached, but usually in red.

😁Love This. As much as I love the majestic Spitfire, the Mustang is my favourite aircraft of WWII, just 'total blood and guts', with a whistle that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
An Airfix Mustang similar to this was the first model I built when re-finding this hobby last Christmas. Previously, every time I had walked past a model shop over here in England, I had found myself walking back to look in the window again, like the kid in me once did. Many of the kits in the windows looked quite familiar 40 odd years on. Whilst always being tempted, I had always stopped myself from entering the shops. Namely because, 1. I was way too old for this, and 2. Thought I would end up spending a mint if I did.
Eventually my wife persuaded me (twisted my arm, but only slightly as by this point I was ready to be persuaded), and she bought me the Airfix Mustang kit as a Christmas gift.
I thoroughly enjoyed the build, only doing a small amount of work each time I picked it up. I made a couple of mistakes (duhh), but it didnt matter. I had learned a lot, not just that the eyes were not as sharp as the 8 year old me, and the hands not as steady, but also that I still had a great affection for this rewarding hobby.
I have just acquired a second silmilar Airfix Mustang Kit (the same as in your video), and am looking forward to learning from my previous mistakes, and maybe even using some of your own techniques to see how I get on. So greatly looking forward to building the 'Little Indian' over the coming weeks and months.
Thank you for sharing this, and allowing me to learn so much more than I thought was possible.

      Mark,
Thanks for sharing your story with me. I'm always glad to hear when people re-discover (or discover for the first time) this hobby. I've had a few short breaks through out the years, but I've learned, that you're never too old for this hobby. So, welcome back!
The Airfix Mustangs really are great kits, I've built a number of the 1:72 scale kits and have a few more in the stash, but this one was my first 1:48 version. I Really had a good time with it and I'm confident you will too.
Learning from ones mistakes is the absolute core of model building (in my opinion). I try to make sure, that every kit I build, I am either trying something new, trying to refine a technique, or just make a small step forward with my skill. Doesn't have to be leaps and bounds, incremental is just fine. Good luck with your Mustang,
      Brett

I agree with you regards the fit of certain parts but you've proved that it can be turned into a masterpiece.

Nice. Just one thing for future reference. The rear of the sliding canopy should sit on the fuselage when open, not in the air.

Great build of an interesting kit. The gear leg bulk and sliding canopy frame thickness are strong points compared to Eduard. Also the cowl fastener depiction on the top centerline is better than Eduards. The Eduard windscreen is superior, and having spares, I adapt it to the Airfix... The sliding canopy should rest on the fuselage.

Interesting points of comparison. I have yet to build the Eduard kit, but it is certainly on my wish list to do soon. I'll keep these points in mind! Thanks for watching!

Very nice build. BTW, without a small step or ladder, there is no chance to enter the P-51 from the trailing edge. Not with flaps up, nor down, especially not with a seat parachute dangling from one’s back. The proper way was to step on the left wheel, then go via the leading edge. There are no hand holds or built in steps or ladders (like on the FW 190 for example).

Thanks for the info, I didn't know this. Unfortunately, I don't have as much experience getting in and out of Mustangs as I would like. Fortunately I can rearrange the display a little to reflect this new info.

@@HammerheadModelMaking No problem, you’re welcome. If you ever think of making a P-47, same thing. It’s a bit better, since one can use the left inner gun shroud as a hand hold (which I didn’t know until much later).
I once had a chance to board one in a museum.
Spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out how to get onto it then into it…
Finally I came up with the “super bright” idea to take a couple steps back behind the left trailing edge, then run and jump on the left wing…it was a successful disaster.
Imagine a 190 lbs guy “soaring” through the air (for a nanosecond, with all the grace of a stampeding Brauchiosaur…), then slamming belly down onto that wing. At the same time the trailing edge cutting into my thighs…I paid dearly for those moments in the cockpit.
I ended up with the legs dangling from the trailing edge (hurting like hell), slowly dripping from that wing. Somehow I managed to bring the left leg up and the dripping stopped. I was thinking like, how the hell did they manage to win the war with it, I can’t even reach the cockpit…
Luckily, it was a Monday and there were no visitors except me (I had a special clearance, the museum curator and my father were best friends). And, that the Alexanders Seversky and Kartveli built the P-47 like a ton of bricks…otherwise 1. I would have ended up, rightly, as perfect laughing stock for the rest of the museum and 2. judging the prices those things have now, my grand grand children would still be paying for it.

As always, a great looking model. Using one of the spare canopies for painting, there is a portion of the metal finish fuselage covered. Did you have to touch up that small area after the fact? If so, how?
Again, you have shared some awesome skills and experience with this video! Thanks for sharing.
