PayPal Scams - Friends and Family - Fortnite Account Example

- This PayPal Scam has come up a lot lately, most recently where a person was trying to buy a Fortnite account using PayPal. In this video I explain why this is a scam and how it works so that you can avoid it.
PayPal provides payment options for "Goods and Services" or "Friends and Family". If you are sending or receiving payments for Goods or Services, there is both Buyer Protection and Seller Protection policies in place that will help protect you.
With Friends and Family, it is assumed that you are working directly with actual Friends and/or Family to exchange cash for non-business purposes. As such, PayPal does not charge any fees for using the service in this way, and they also do not offer any such protection on these types of transactions.
Unfortunately, sellers often try to take advantage of this to save fees, and fraudsters take advantage of this to get cash payments which cannot be disputed.

Is it allowed to sell something with friends and family if there is escrow on the site you sell. Will PayPal ban you for selling family and friends? Because you dont need PayPal protection because the site already has protection.

@@angelleye But if I get the payment through goods and services there is a big risk that the bitcoin buyer charge backs after he gets the bitcoins.
@@FriedenInMenschFriedenInWelt Well, yeah, there is. Digital goods of any kind come with this risk, unfortunately. You're going to need to do some additional buyer due diligence to make sure they are trustworthy. Maybe even use a different method of payment like cash/money order apps.

@@iijulioh5858 Well if they sent you money, and you see it in your actual PayPal account (not just an email) then you're on the safe side. Send payments via F&F is when you could lose the money if they don't deliver. So if they're expecting you to deliver something, you should go ahead and do that.
Was there a fee taken from the payment? If so, it was most likely G&S payment. If not, it was probably F&F.

I'm GLAD to find this. We were just about to purchase a set of puppies from a saler. First he wanted us to use some money application on our phone. I suggested we use PayPal since we have an account. He said no problem but that we needed to use the Friends and Family option ONLY. We asked for an invoice and suggested using the PayPal INvoice option but he kept insisting on using the Friends and Family option. We explained that neither of us would be protected using that method. I never received a response back. If it sounds wrong, it's wrong.

How come receiving friends and family and the buyer claimed fraud, PayPal will reverse the transaction? I thought there should be no protection for friends and family.

This is kind of stupid actually, like if i let my phone somewhere and my little cousin picks it up and sends money to someone stranger as friends and family i can't get a refund even tho its not sent with my consent, im stop using paypal.
Your little cousin would need your PayPal password in order to make the payment. If he has that, then I would suggest you aren't using secure passwords and/or you aren't securing them properly.

I'm sorry to know that you fall in prey of this. Don't use friends and family option if you are buying an item. Always use Good and services option so, your transactions are protected with buyer protection.

No, seller protection is provided the same way. There may be extra fees for receiving international payments in general, though.

It sucks when "friends" turn on you and you can't dispute it. I helped pay for $2000 for a friend's wedding and they paid me back, a month or so later they issued a chargeback through their card and I couldn't win the dispute

I'm selling my pc setup on gumtree for £1600 the buyer is saying PayPal and wants a courier to come pick it up i don't trust selling it without friends and family as its not hand to hand selling its gone out of my site once it gets picked up so I'm a little worried and not sure what to do

my question is if you do a service like make a video for someone and they pay you on paypal can they charge a refund to try and steal their money back and take your service or do they have to prove that they need the refund because the service failed etc.
Intangible goods are difficult online no matter who you're processing the payment with. Typically, if you don't have a tracking number proving delivery of a physical product, it can be tough to win the dispute.
If you're doing video work for somebody like that, you can take care of yourself by using contracts and threatening them legally if they do not pay you for services rendered. This is really the standard way that sort of thing has been done for many years.
That said, PayPal has just recently updated their user agreement to include details about how they are going to try and help sellers of Intangible goods out more. You'll need some sort of evidence of delivery. For example, if you can provide proof that you own all of the original video work, and show that they have it posted on their TH-cam channel, that would be pretty solid evidence that you delivered on the service.

Any sort of digital good is difficult to win disputes with no matter who you process the payment with. Without a tracking number from a carrier like UPS/FedEx/USPS, you don't have any (acceptable) evidence that the buyer received the item(s), so the card companies will almost always decide in their favor. You really need to do your due diligence on buyers if you're going to sell that sort of thing using an online payment processor. If you want to be absolutely safe with it, ask them to send you a money order, and don't deliver the digital good(s) until that cash clears your bank. Another option would be to physically print the information a buyer would need to load your digital good(s) into their account and mail it to them. That way you'd have a tracking number. Slows things down a bit, but if they really want the item(s) they won't mind, and then you'll have seller protection that way.

Correct. If they send you an invoice and you pay it then you would be protected by buyer protection. Just make sure you see the actual invoice in your own PayPal account and you're not just looking at an email that sends you to a payment page. Always log in to your PayPal directly (not from a link) and click to pay the invoice from there. If you don't see the invoice in there then they're scamming you.

How do you even send paypal friends and family when I click on send money it just tells me to type in the users email that's it?
I currently have this problem, someone bought an account from me and they sent it using F&F and the sender is trying to dispute it with unauthorized transaction. We also have conversation that the sender received the account can I use this conversation as a proof that the sender received the account?

What would happen if someone chargebacks a payment to your account, while you have no money on your account. I heard your balanca would go negative, but what happens of your balance is negative?
If your balance goes negative you will be asked to transfer cash back into the account to make it even again. If any payments are received into the account while it's in the negative, those payments would go towards the negative balance. If you don't ever take care of it, it could go to collections and affect your credit.

I was scammed by the owner o of an online business that insisted I pay using friends and family, he befriended me on Facebook so I wrongly sent him money for some goods that he sells online. Am I screwed?
If you sent it with PayPal or bank funds, yeah, you're pretty much out of luck. If you sent it with a debit or credit card then you could attempt to submit a chargeback through the card issuing bank. This would be a clear sign to PayPal that you used the F&F feature improperly, though, and could result in having your PayPal account limited or suspended. I'm sorry you didn't see this video sooner! :(

I'm not aware of any limitations in Europe for using Friends and Family, but I haven't specifically looked into it either. When using the Send Money option you should see somewhere along the way that allows you to change the method. Sometimes it can be a little tricky to see depending on the design they're showing you, but it's there.

You can't accidentally use F&F. You have to do this very specifically, and on purpose. If you did that it's considered a gift and you cannot dispute it.

F&F should be used for actual F&F. It's right there in the name. ;)
If you're receiving a payment for something you are shipping and you suspect something funky, I would find a different buyer. Why risk it at all?
I would never suggest that you ship anything to anybody that didn't pay you in a way that you're covered by Seller Protection, and F&F does not do that.

Sellers don't have protection against buyers, should make a video on the opposite scams where buyers claim ineffective product or non delivered and you have to cough up all the money back while your item never returns.
Plus the police don't do anything except refer you to fraud and you get a fraud report number but without a police report paypal don't protect the seller. Good stuff
Actually, they literally have "Seller Protection" for all sellers. You just have to make sure to follow the proper procedures. Was the transaction covered by Seller Protection? Did you ship to the exact address on the order? Did you ship with trackable service and signature required? If so, in the very least they would have had to return the item in order to get a refund.

What if i want to sell an item and the buyer wants friends and family, that's safe, right?
There is no benefit for a buyer to pay with F&F over G&S, so that alone would raise a red flag for me. It's not logical for them to request that. Also, if you are "selling an item" then that is a "good or service", and using F&F in that case would be violating PayPal's policy.
The only reason there is to use F&F when selling goods or services is so the seller doesn't have to pay a fee. That's why it's against PayPal's policy (they don't want you fee dodging), and again, there is no benefit for the buyer.
Send the person a PayPal invoice and let them buy your product that way.
If u were to sell a account can they refund even if they do get the item
If you sell one with regular "goods and services", and the buyer then disputes it as "item not received" you would have to prove that you did indeed deliver the account. Unfortunately, without a tracking number showing delivery like you would have with a shipped product, it will be very difficult to win such a dispute. As such, if you are going to do this, you want to make sure you do plenty of due diligence on your buyer to make sure they won't try this.
Make them send it through friends and family so you know they won’t refund it if they argue that they don’t trust that tell them to fuck off

Sorry you didn't see this sooner. You could may be able to get that back for you, but there's a chance your PayPal account could get shut down for breaking their policies on F&F.

There is so much fraud surrounding these things. If I were selling a gaming account of any kind I would probably just request that they send a money order, and do not deliver the account credentials until you have received the money AND it has cleared your bank account.

Hard to say from the small amount of detail here, but if you didn't feel comfortable, then yes it was the right decision.

If the payment is completed and eligible for seller protection then you just need to make sure you ship it to the exact address shown on the payment. If the buyer then files a dispute they would be required to prove return of merchandise before the funds are released back to them as a refund.

Your PayPal money might be on hold if you're a new seller or your account has been inactive. PayPal puts money on hold to help ensure the platform is safe to use for both buyers and sellers.

Do you actually know this "friend"? It sounds to me like you got hit with another popular scam, where they ask you to forward cash through your PayPal account to somebody else. The money they sent you, though, was stolen. When that actual account owner submits their dispute they get their money back, and it gets taken from you since that's where it was deposited.
So basically, you were tricked into sending your own money on to somebody else even though you never really received any legitimate money.
Very sorry, but not much you can do at this point, other than consider it a learning experience.
I lost $4500 through a PayPal scam transaction i was really affected i tried all options for recovery but non was helpful, i heard of hackbeign_ on insta i thought he was a bot but i actually got my money Refunded. Try him if you want he is 100% legit.

Some are indeed simply trying to avoid fees. However, that is against PayPal policy and could jeopardize one or both of the accounts involved. Also, as the buyer, it simply leaves you with zero protection. If they're that worried about fees, tell them you'll pay them 3% more than they're asking to cover it, or maybe 1.5% so you can share it. If they aren't willing to work with you, that's a clear sign they are a scammer.

No, of course not. Did you even watch my video? You should never use F&F unless you're actually sending somebody cash unrelated to the sale of a product or service.
If you are going to sell something, I would send them a PayPal Invoice with the line item details specified.
If it's a digital good, I would print the information out and actually ship it to them. This way you'll have a tracking number to add back into the PayPal transaction details.
Honestly, though, the odds of scams when selling accounts like this is very high. If that person pays you with a stolen PayPal account, the legitimate owner could file an unauthorized dispute and likely win.
You really need to do your due diligence before the sale. Have a Skype Chat or Google Meet or something with the person. Feel them out. Make sure they aren't trying to scam you.
If you're comfortable with them, send the invoice like I said above, and maybe you can skip the shipping part. That's up to you and how you feel.
If they file a dispute, though, they will probably win.

i got scamed for willow smith concert tickets the seller neveer sent me them and yes i asked for confirmation and everything.. called my bank and they said they cant do nothigbecause i used my checking ? i didnt know i used checking either but they told me to`file a police report but... will police even do anything and will i even get my $50 ? i want to know before i do anything with the police involved
Unfortunately, police usually are not able to do anything. First, they don't make it a priority, and even if they did, it's nearly impossible to find these culprits. Even if you do, they're out of jurisdiction, and it all just becomes a big waste of time and frustrating energy.
I would say chalk it up to a $50 learning experience. I know that's a bummer, but at least it wasn't $500. :)
Just make sure you don't ever pay for things this way anymore unless it's an actual friend/family member that you are simply sending money to. Never use it for purchasing goods/services.

@@angelleye i was trying to purchase some shoes off a guy on snapchat and was talking to him for a few days and he seemed legit. He asked me to send $250 through PayPal and send it through friends and family i hesitated and argued a bit with him back and forth but he insisted he need the money because he had bills to pay and thats why he was selling the shoes in the first place. I finally agreed to send it and was greeted with an email that was presumably from a shipping company. They asked for $240 that they said would be refunded on delivery and I sent it on Google pay. There was a sentence in the information on Google play that said something about a refund if something wasn't delivered. I misread it the first time apparently because on further expecting it said you can refund your payment if it isn't delivered to the recipient. And if I dont contact my bank would it be better to act as if my PayPal and Google Pay logins were breached? I know they weren't but I feel like your moral compass goes out the window when dealing with people like this.

I'm sorry to know about it. Actually, you can not ask for refund if you are using FNF because of the PayPal policy. If you will request for refund they will block your account because of violation of FNF terms.
So the general census is that the buyer should always use Goods and Services.
However, what should the seller do when they're selling digital content in a game? The buyer can use Goods and Services, receive the digital content and ask for a refund. The seller would have no proof that the buyer received the digital item, so the seller would lose the payment and their item as I do not think they're covered by seller protection.
What you are describing here is exactly the same no matter who you process the payment with. This not a PayPal specific issue. If you're going to be selling digital goods you'll need to take precautions. Lots of buyer due diligence, for example. Talk to them on the phone or over a Google Meet. Make sure you feel completely good about them before completing the transaction. Maybe even go as far as printing the information they need on paper and mailing that so that you have a tracking number that proves delivery, which would help. I sell digital goods myself, and I win disputes by providing lots of evidence like order logs of IP addresses, matching those up with the download logs I have, and showing that the IP is in the same area as the billing address, which is a match on AVS. These types of things can help you win such disputes, and again, you'll need this with any processor.
What if I use a middleman from ogusers? If I have full access of a fortnite account what are the steps to make sure the seller doesn’t take it back? And can they take it back?
I don't know much about fortnite in general or how those accounts work, but my guess is that once you own it you would have to somehow validate any sort of transfer back to some other owner.
Please respond, if someone sends by friends and family can they chargeback? I’ve read that there’s such thing as friends and family scam where they chargeback with their bank account or credit card... I sold an item and I’m afraid that the person will chargeback thru bank or credit card.
If you are selling an item you shouldn't be requesting F&F payments. That's against the PayPal AUP, and the only reason you would have for doing that is to get around their fees. If they catch you doing this they will kill your account.
If somebody does pay you with F&F they will not have any method of disputing the payment from within PayPal. That's because F&F is supposed to be for sending a GIFT, or simply cash that you owe to an actual friend or family member. The point is nothing is being purchased/sold in that case. You're just sending some cash to somebody you know.
The person could still try to dispute the transaction with their bank that the money was pulled from. Or, if they used a credit card to fund the F&F payment they could dispute it with the card bank. However, in this case you would have still paid a fee on the money you received, which means there would have been absolutely zero reason to ask them to pay with F&F in the first place.
If you are worried about the buyer scamming you then I would suggest you need to do some more due diligence on your buyer. Give them a call, do a Google Meet or something with them, or whatever you need to do in order to feel comfortable.
Of course, make sure you deliver exactly the product/service you said you would, and in the quality you said you would, so that they don't become an unhappy buyer.
If anything feels "phishy" or "scammy" about what you're doing, then it probably is, and you should probably just avoid it.
Have them pay with a regular Goods and Services payment. I would recommend you send them a PayPal invoice with the details included and have them pay against that invoice. Make sure the payment shows that it's eligible for Seller Protection, and then ship to the exact address shown on the payment details.

Sounds like it, yes. There are lots of gift card scams in general, even unrelated to PayPal.

If I were in your shoes I wouldn't use an online payment provider for this. I would ask them to send a money order, and only deliver when you have cash in hand.

I'm sorry but there is no way to get a refund in Friends and Family. You must need to use this option when you are dealing with people you know. If you will ask for refund of FNF payment type and they might block your account because of their TOS vialoation.

I'm a little confused by the scenario you're mentioning here. Are you selling an account to somebody else? If so, you shouldn't be using F&F to begin with, unless it's truly a friend or family member.
When you accept payments with F&F one of the primary benefits is that you aren't paying the fee, but if they pay with a credit card then you do still charge a fee. Also, if it's actual friend or family member I would hope they'd deal with you directly rather than file a chargeback.
The fact is you shouldn't find yourself in this situation unless you're on the selling side trying to skip out on the fees.

Right now things have been extended because of current events, and sellers are getting a longer period of time to reply to disputes. It could be that you're simply running into that.

Unfortunately, there's really not much that can be done at this point. When you pay with F&F you are gifting cash to the other person. There's no way to dispute that. Hopefully it wasn't much..?? You'll likely need to consider this a learning experience.

Wait quick question! So if you send money through friends and family the person receiving gets the money right away?
That depends on how you cover the payment.
If you have PayPal funds available that cover the entire amount, then yes it would be sent immediately.
If you have to pull funds from a bank account then it could take a few business days for it to clear, similar to giving them a check.
Now, with Goods and Services, if funds are pulled from the bank account, but you have a linked debit/credit card, then it will go ahead and do an "instant transfer". If the bank funds should fail, then it would hit the linked card to cover the payment.
I'm not sure if Friends and Family will do that, though. I'd have to run some specific tests on that. I don't think it will, because if a card is used then there would be a fee paid by the receiver. If no card is used, then no fee gets paid. Again, not sure exactly how it handles that without running some specific tests.

Yeah i bought some items in a game from someone (a youtuber) i was pretty stupid to do it since it was pretty fishy.
But i sent him the money via friends and family without thinking about it and he just ghosted me, it's been over 2 hours since i paid him and he hasnt messaged me back since i paid him.

Typically, no. In most cases F&F payments are funded with PayPal or bank account funds, which is when there is no fee charged. If somebody funds the F&F payment using a credit card, then the receiver would still be paying a fee. In this case, the buyer could potentially dispute the transaction with their card company in order to get their money back. However, if they do this, they risk getting the PayPal account suspended since they were obviously using F&F when they shouldn't be.
If you're buying/selling goods or services, then you need to use that method. If you're sending cash to actual friends and family, then use that. Follow their procedures and everything will be nice and smooth.

Check the Seller Protection Eligibility inside the transaction details of the payment you received in your PayPal account. If it's Eligible, ship to the exact address shown, and you will be good to go.
F&F payments won't be eligible, and they also wouldn't have any shipping info.
With any type of payment, yes, they could potentially dispute it with their bank. If the item was shipped and you had provided tracking details showing delivered, then they would at least have to send the item back to you in order to get their refund in that case.
Payment holds can occur for a wide variety of reasons. As the seller, when it happens, you just have to follow the steps they outline in the transaction details.

@@apin5259 Digital goods are difficult to work with in general no matter who you process the payment with. This is because of the very fact that you cannot provide any proof of delivery that is acceptable by card issuing banks. One thing some people do is print the info and physically mail the piece of paper so they can provide tracking to the system. Others simply use Venmo, CashApp, Western Union, etc. and get the cash directly before delivering. Of course, plenty of due diligence on your buyer is always the best solution.

The option should be there somewhere, but it can be a little different depending on your account type. Are you on a personal account or a business account?

I sent the seller money on goods and services and they never gave me any account information until the money was off the hold by PayPal. I was a little concerned so I requested a refund on the account which he never granted, nor did he give me the account and only responded, “f*** off” to my request for a refund . I just filed a dispute on him today. Do you think I’ll win?
If you filed an "item not received" dispute, the system will ask the seller to provide a tracking number proving delivery. If they cannot provide this, which it sounds like they won't be able to, then you will win the dispute.
