The right way to do this - if welding is even right - is to take the carrier out of the housing. it's 12 bolts, bearing supports pop right out and the carrier basically falls out of the case. That way you can ensure no spatter gets into the diff casing. It's also way easier to clean the oil off of. The other way to make a spool is to use an LSD carrier and pack it to full lockup.
There’s always one. Welding is never the right way. A mini spool or full spool is the way to go for sure. However in my 20 years of Lincoln lockers, I have found more times than not where the heat from welding distorts the carrier if it’s removed from the housing. So I choose to leave them in and deal with the cleanup aspect.
Sorry just getting back into this, my 79 cj7 has been waiting for me. So I remember never having an issue with my auto lockers so what has changed? Street-able, never let me down off road, have they become too expensive, illegal, why because tire scrub was the issue then have they found a solution? Edit I saw the prior video. So nothing has changed, cost savings they think at the cost of replacing many tires, street ability, and risk of catastrophic failure as the mig welds crack fail, and self destruct. I thought this was for junk disposable projects like buggies, track cars and demolition derbies. I guess it makes you money……twice.
It’s made me money over 200 times 😉 it’s all a cost thing. Most grass roots drifters and off roaders don’t want to spend the money on traditional locking differentials. I’ve also done several spools and mini spools as well as traditional lockers. Hey I do what my customers ask of me 😉
Thanks this vidéo is answer my question from part 1.
First woot woot!! The fire over the burp there’s some funny one liners in here 😂
Kinda glad you posted a part 2 cause I need to weld mine😂
