I love the fact that he asks a lot of questions. even though for some answers might be obvious it still gives the video a ton more depth. great work camera guy
@@ex35240sx I just started learning to weld and it's so damn cool. Check into weekend classes near you and pick up the skill. Sticking your first pieces of scrap metal together was such a bad ass feeling
@@ex35240sx brah, auto darking ftw. Like standard equipment now, if u wana get fancy miller has gear with built in a/c, also ball cap backwards saves ur neck from slag. Sleeve are also a must. U can get jackets, i just wear tshirts u make enough not to give a fuuuuuuk as a welder.
I've always ended up breaking them when I weld just the gears so what I started doing is welding the gears to the carrier also. Now that's all cast steel which will become brittle when it gets hot so when you weld up a rear end like this pre heat it with torches and it's best to use a stick welder with nickel rod and after you weld it throw a Insulation blanket on it so it cools down slowly that will prevent cracks and weakening from the welds. I've had a lot of experience with welding up rear ends lol
Dan your the best thing that has ever happened to hoonigan im sure this channel wouldn't be what it is today with out you dan thank you brother keep up the good content :)
Must be a "just send it" diff👍, to properly weld a diff, 1 cut metal plates to fit in the gap of the spider gears, 2 tac plates, 3 pre heat with a tourch (makes for deeper welds), 3 weld on spider gears aposing corners, then weld on plate solid, repeat for other side. Optional is to run a higher speed feed with hotter v and fill in the valley, overkill really. Other than that the only nit pick i got is the rtv, overkill much? Lol. Another note is to clean it properly, makes for better welds. Lets see...oh...nvm...pinon seal...diving too far in to it. Hmm...good vid to show how to build a "send my cv shafts" 👍👏
I seen welded diffs without plates fail. Chunks of weld got stuck in ring and pinion gear and locked up the rear end. Either the spider gears not pre-heated or not kept heat on them afterward then slowly cooled down. This is serious shit so i suggest plates no matter what along with the gears welded.
if you preheat and get good penetration with your welds you don't need plates. I try to avoid it because you're adding unbalanced mass. if you have 500+ horses running 265 tires ok sure use plates but at that point just get a spool.
My white supra has a lsd that needs refreshed with a Weir max lock kit, hopefully I can get both to spin at all times again. But I'm gonna get the open diff on my burgandy mk3 welded up so I can really hoon. Got some studded snow tires for the races on the lake this winter, its gonna be so fun.

You were talking about cleaning access splatter out of the casing, would you spray anti spatter around the gear your welding to stop the splatter hitting them? Or send it
Curious, what’s the negative effect of a welded diff? Why wouldn’t you want to weld your diff if it’s just your daily that you may or may not want to slide a corner now and then? Why isn’t it for everyone?
Welded my friends 240 diff, was a fun experience, stick welded it, with preheat and I beveled the little square piece to go in between the gears so it would sit down in there nicely and put some fat ass passes in that ol girl. Worked like a charm 👌
grab a peice of 1/2 steel and weld on a front support for the diff. You basically just drill a hole through one end, weld the other to the case, then get a longer front bolt to the diff. This supports the front better so you dont break things back there as easily. Basically a free mod for someone like you. I think someone sells something like this....
You have no idea how long I have wondered that it's been years since I've built anything and that drove me nuts I've done plenty of welding but I never got the chance to weld a diff.. I've driven on welded diffs and it's hilarious! thanks for the input... I wanna try for next year's races
Maybe I missed it, but arent you suppose to clean the parts with brake cleaner before you weld? I know the oil gets into the pores in the metal over time so it can be harder to get the weld to stick to the metal. But hey if it works it works.
It's funny when I watch this. it reminds me of how violent welding is. The first time you see someone weld you are not expecting how heavy the flash and the noise is.
welded diffs: "im here for a good time, not a long time"

“My lights are dead”,
“Cool man, just like everything in this shop”.

Great to see Rob back at it. Hope all is well my man, cheers from the Maritimes.

i don´t say you don´t need to clean your diff at all. But with TIG you don´t need to clean those "weldpellets" out of your diff.

TIG is for Instagram welders, MIG is more practical and what the pro's use on the daily.
