    Your lessons on pentatonic scales, using these three scale positions combined, are just incredible! After 20 years of playing in little boxes, I just had a lightbulb moment and can suddenly improvise up the entire neck. I've only been working on this exercise for about a day, so I can't wait to see what else I discover. I've never heard anyone else explain it this way, and it's really effective. You've got a donation from me and I would encourage others who found this useful to do the same. Thank you so much for the great lessons!

    It’s really quite amazing how clear and simple your lessons come across.
    Probably because you are thinking it clearly and simply.
    That may sound trite, but it’s not.
    A great many teachers have their ideas in their heads in a clouded and overly complicated way to start with - so that’s what comes across to their students.
    It makes a difference.
    It makes a huge difference.
    👍👍

    Your lessons are so clear and direct,they really cut through a lot of the jargon bullcrap especially for beginners,I've been playing for 20 years and I would be much better if I had lessons like these when I started,you had one video that sumed up something that took me years to figure ,you clearly explained it in a few paragraphs,then I felt like a total ass when you demonstrated how simple it actually was, seriously great music teacher,great attitude and very humble,man your voice is excellent,you should do audio books

  • @bennybe1977

    great daily drill, I also play with the grouping, adding 3 and 5 groupings as well, this makes the polyrhythmic effect (What Rich is trying to demonstrate with the 1 & 3 accents) even stronger. You can also apply this to any scale, find a 3-octave fingering of the scale, and apply groupings.

      I think the qualities you mention here are essential for musicians who really want to reach listeners on an emotional level. You've nailed it, John. I'm always trying to play with this in mind, whether on stage or in the shed. Thank you for this reminder. Very important!

    Hi Rich, Found your channel last night..immediate subscribe...and I'm a guitar player. Sent a link to my son who is a bass player needing to learn some theory. CAGED system applied to bass..maybe? I found CAGED useful in tandem with learning Pentatonics. Awesome teaching style! Thanks!

      @@richbrownbass Thanks Rich. Please do. Until then I will dive into what exactly it is I want to work out on the bass. I'm a professional bass player and music educator myself (in India). Your approach to rhythm was quite inspirational when I first picked up the instrument.

    Hi Rich, Im diggin your vids, however, two requests if I may? Can you add a few more "beginner friendly" vids, and also as you do in this vid, you have a 5 string (BString) bass and I LOVE the low tones but your vids avoid that string altogether in your exercises? Can you include that string in some? Thanks for all you do for us you are appreciated.

    Just found the channel. Awesome stuff. 1) the tone on the bass is beautiful.
    2) sometimes you find a video that will improve your playing but it's a pain to memorise - this is it. Can't wait to get at it.

    Hey Rich, thanks for your excellent teaching approach. May I ask please - to play the G minor and Bb M on a continuous line with a 4 string bass guitar, I could not find this out LOL. Any hint on how to translate from the 5 string for the 4 string guitar players?

    • @meisenman
      @meisenman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Rich isn’t using the B string-I haven’t yet seen him use it-so it’s just as if he were playing a 4-string bass. He’s starting on G and Bb on the E string. Good luck.

    Hi Rich. I am a bit of a novice. Just noticed you are using a 5 string bass guitar. I probably missed the lesson where you explain that. So I need to do the exercises on my 4 string base and hope I can still fulfill the objective.

    Hey Mr rich, how you get that sound of your bass, been trying to get it from mine unsuccessfully!!!

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The simple answer is turning off ALL treble (tone knob and amp), cranking the lows and mids, and using only the bridge pickup. Try that and see if it gets you closer to what you want. Let me know if it works!

    • @rekeesefil
      @rekeesefil 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure where you are on your bass journey but I'd like to point out that rich is also playing very close to the bridge, which will also have a huge effect on his tone, and since he is playing a Jazz style bass there is a pickup right under where he is plucking. So if you're playing a p-bass or bass w other pickup style/placement you may not get same exact tone. But where you actually pluck the string (closer to bridge vs closer to neck) will make a massive difference and get you most of the way there! Good luck
