Your lessons on pentatonic scales, using these three scale positions combined, are just incredible! After 20 years of playing in little boxes, I just had a lightbulb moment and can suddenly improvise up the entire neck. I've only been working on this exercise for about a day, so I can't wait to see what else I discover. I've never heard anyone else explain it this way, and it's really effective. You've got a donation from me and I would encourage others who found this useful to do the same. Thank you so much for the great lessons!
There are many bass teachers out there, but this guy is the best. His videos are easy to follow and his chill factor adds to the joy of learning new bass techniques. This video in particular is FIRE!
Been 20 plus years Bro and no one on TH-cam explains things as clear and concise as you ! No bells and whistles and flashy stuff, just straight veteran education. Appreciate you sir !
It’s really quite amazing how clear and simple your lessons come across. Probably because you are thinking it clearly and simply. That may sound trite, but it’s not. A great many teachers have their ideas in their heads in a clouded and overly complicated way to start with - so that’s what comes across to their students. It makes a difference. It makes a huge difference. 👍👍
As a beginner, first and foremost I would like to thank you and tell you that I really appreciate these video lessons that you create! They are very informative, clear and concise. It’s nice that you inform, show, explain, then repeat yourself and show slowed down finger positions. It’s extremely helpful and keeps beginners like myself from constantly having to rewind and pause to try to figure things out. You have a great and welcoming disposition and I hope that you keep doing this and spreading positivity and confidence to aspiring musicians like myself. Thank you Rich!
Learning bass on my own after a few years of playing drums. I had been practicing pentatonic scales this week. Just scrolling you tube when the title of this video drew me in. In the middle of working through this excellent exercise, I looked closer at the thoughtful face with the calm, guiding tone leading the lesson and it came to me. "Hey, this is Rob Brown's brother!" Subscribed instantly.
Alan, I'm in the same place. Been a drummer for 40+ years and have benefitted so much from Rob's videos. Just found Rich and had the same reaction! Subscribed.
Rich...I feel like I am in the room with you and you are showing me this Mutha of a scale. Love you quiet but intense style and bass knowledge and passion. Groove on.....Thankee
Oh man! You're so welcome. Thank for your generous donation, and congratulations on the success of your channel. I would love to be at that level. Cheers!
@@richbrownbass I'm a mandolin player but borrowed my bro in laws bass in December to mess with another instrument. Now I bought myself a a 70s Vibe Squier Jazz. Playing daily. Loving it sooo much. I read the book "The Practice of Practice" and it suggested playing another instrument other than your main one. The bass is helping me see things on the mandolin better...but all I want to do is play bass right now. Thank you on my channel. It took me14 years to hit 100,000 subs. Your channel is growing and will continue to with what you are doing.
great daily drill, I also play with the grouping, adding 3 and 5 groupings as well, this makes the polyrhythmic effect (What Rich is trying to demonstrate with the 1 & 3 accents) even stronger. You can also apply this to any scale, find a 3-octave fingering of the scale, and apply groupings.
Thank you Rich! After many years of ‘fooling around’ on bass, I finally decided to sit down and really learn something…I found your series on ‘modes’ on the SBL site and it blew my mind! I dig your approach to teaching, very personable…old dogs CAN learn new tricks!
YES! Thanks very much, Andrew. And thanks for checking out the SBL course. I had so much fun shooting that with Scott and the crew. I'm glad you like it.
Your lessons are so clear and direct, they really cut through a lot of the jargon bullcrap especially for beginners,I've been playing for 20 years and I would be much better if I had lessons like these when I started, you had one video that sumed up something that took me years to figure ,you clearly explained it in a few paragraphs, then I felt like a total ass when you demonstrated how simple it actually was, seriously great music teacher, great attitude and very humble, man your voice is excellent, you should do audio books
Rich, I am doing this exercise for a month now, it was very hard at the beginning, mostly because of fingering issues. But I took it slow and now I play it decently clean and without many mistakes through circle of 4ths/5ths continuously at 100 bpm. It has improved every aspect of my playing, but especially my technique and ability to solo and make basslines with pentatonic scales. I recommend the exercise to everyone and the advice I can give is - RELAX! Fretting hand has to be relaxed and fluid, until I relaxed it was impossible to play legato notes. Thank you so much Rich, for all the great content you provide to us.
I'm not a musician, but I play music. Videos and tutorials / exercises like this give people like me a chance to become an actual musician rather than just someone who plays music. Thanks!
