I’ve been playing bass for almost two years without knowing any music theory. After watching this tutorial, I felt the excitement that I felt back when I first picked up the instrument. Finally, theory is starting to CLICK! Can’t wait to binge-watch the rest of these beginner videos. You, sir, are an excellent teacher! Patient and clear.
Hello Mr B, your genius is not knowing the theory but in your ability to make it blindingly obvious what the students need to do 😁 Really cool mate and I'm thumbing through your other vids 👍
Mr. Brown, your elocution goes beyond words, tone and style to include how you seamlessly integrated the physical movements of your hand and bass to deliver an outstanding presentation. Seriously.

Your "rant" was not a rant at all, but a beautifully stated explanation. As for the lesson, I loved it! I am truly a beginner with experience. I taught myself guitar in junior high school. I played tenor sax in high school band. I picked up a base in a church years ago because they did not have a base player. Again, self taught, off of what I knew from other stuff. Funny story. The associate pastor (sound board guy) handed me a tape to listen to. He hit play. After two or three measures, I told him to stop it. "I get it." He smiled. Talk about the busiest bass in the west! I slowed it down immediately. Amazing how simply hearing your BEGINNER self for a second or two is more than enough. LOL I am taking the time now to really learn it all from scratch. The ideas of music theory are not over my head, but I never understood how to really "work" with any of it. I love the way you teach.
Self taught with a bit of knowledge but stuck ?well these patterns take you up another step ,showing that 1 finger per fret in exercise is great, alternative ways of playing scales is also vital and this is a real learning process not only for beginners but self taught guys like myself who missed a few steps while learning .guys like you and J.Stinnet give you great fundamentals while moving over fretboard.❤❤
As someone who's been playing for years and years these type of videos are really amazing to refresh the memory, sometimes the most simple stuff can be the most complicated to master (feel and etc.), anyways much appreciated! =)
I played on a church worship team for about 10 years. Stopped playing for about 20 years. Just getting back into playing again. Love the scales lessons. Lots of stuff here I never learned the first time through. Very grateful for the lessons. Currently jamming on a fretless 6 string
I just started playing a couple months ago and after watching this a few times it finally clicked! Also as someone with very small hands trying to play this on a long scale it's been a fantastic exercise in getting better at microshifting 😅
Rich, as a beginner I've watch many video's and they just confused what little gray matter I have left in my 71 year old brain. After watching this video I have to say - EXCELLENT! - I understood everything. I especially like that you say the dot or fret number and note. I'll be back for more. Thank you very much. -Vince-
Thanks Rich. have always been a 'by-ear' player. felt I was being lazy but then found theory off-putting. You manage to bridge both in a way that I get! Thanks (from the UK).

Great teaching and love your relaxed, respectful regard for the learners. One thing, the volume on the instrument is very hard to hear in the lower registers.
Thank you Sir! I have been playing for a while with no “theory” to speak of. I use the number system mostly. You have taught me more in the first 5 minutes about the pentatonic scale that I can use right now than anything else I have seen. Just stumbled across your video but it will not be my last. Thank you for breaking it down for those of us who aren’t backed up with all the theory.
I really appreciated this lesson. I've played by ear for sometime now, but I really feel that I cheated myself from really going to the next level. At times it just seem like there's so much to know. I really want to settle down and learn this instrument totally. Again, thanks.
Hi Dr Brown, I will be totally honest with you here, right now I am a one man band playing to backing tracks, I have been playing fender strat and tele and acoustic Takamine all my life, rhythm mostly, during Lockdown I decided to pick up the bass guitar, and it Litteraly drove me demented at how strange it felt in my hands, but after watching a few TH-cam videos, I play a lot of country and have been looking up videos mostly just showing this 1 4 5 chord sequence, I spent a whole week at this and last weekend I built up the courage to try this out in my live shows, so for the first hour there I was on stage playing bass 1 4 5 to my simple 3 chord country songs, sounded great I could really feel the bass in the room, but that was it , a lot of the teachings on youtube are thought starting on C root note and easy to then to play the 1 4 5, but then when a song is in A I'm lost, well I'm not as its just put your finger on the E string 5th fret play take it off play it open, but my god that can get so boring, yes it works but I guess it's a start to getting the feel of the bass and especially in front of a crowd I said what if there is actually a bass guitar player in the crowd watching me, so I put the bass back up on its stand and reverted back to my takamine and tele, But in that hour I had my bass in hand, it felt good, so I'm back on youtube now and I landed here on your channel and have watched this clip a few times and I know again it's C chord but it's how you explain moving it all up along the fretboard, you break it down and explain everything so clearly, some tutorials you can't even see what they are doing on the fretboard, it's all so just too rushed into, Scott Grove is where I started with this 1 4 5 Chord sequence and like I said it worked, but can get so boring, coming on here I have learned a lot already only to get it down and put into practice, I think you just made the bass more exciting for me to learn and to play, you have just gained a new subscriber here, sorry for going on here and boring everyone, just wanted to paint a picture of where I am with the bass guitar right now, stuck on just the 1, 4, 5, maybe I'm just too old at 55 to start learning the bass guitar 🤔😊

I've been just kinda learning random things for a few months. Honestly, what I know feels very scattered. I want to start at the beginning again. Where's a good place to start?
As a beginner, I learned A LOT from this video. Your teaching style is phenomenal and I look forward to learning a lot more from this channel. You've earned another subscriber, Mr. Brown!
Huge shoutout right there, somebody tried explaining the Penatonic scale to me on Bass from a guitarists' perspective and it overly complicated everything. Showing us that pattern made it so much clearer and actually helped me understand each scale and the connections to the octaves!
I'm a guitarist but aways wanted to learn Bass. I just started watching your free bass beginner guitar lessons and I came across this Pentatonic lesson. WOW! So clear man! Thank you.
I’m a beginner, so it took a couple go rounds to get the idea the idea of the lesson. You made it easy to break it up, pause, rewind, double check, practice, then play along.. Finally got it. Sounds sweet! Just one shape, thank you! Great Lesson!
JUST bought my first beginner bass guitar bout a month ago. I am a brand new beginner at the bass. Finding the c major and a minor scale on the bass is not as easy as it was on the piano 😂😂😂 This video helped me alot. Thank you, I subscribed
Good morning Mr Brown. I;m a 68 year old beginner playing at my Church and just caught this video which is an eye opener for me. I was impressed with not only this lesson but also with your lead off conversation about rip offs posting replys as you. Thank tou for your honesty and concern for the integrity of your channel. I have subscribed and am looking forward to speedy improvement in my playing thanks to you. Happy Thanksgiving and blessings on you and your family
Man, you are so so much the best bass tutor on TH-cam. It’s like having you in my living room as my personal one-on-one tutor. PS: I make good coffee. Phil (absolute beginner - who you have encouraged my dream is possible) New Plymouth New Zealand ‘Down Under’ Much love
Outstanding..! Man that really hit home. It finally clicked. I picked it up quick in it's simplest form. I think I was over thinking.....again. Thank You SO MUCH..! You have a great teaching style. I'm an Ex-Keyboard guy and was trying to see the piano keys on a string fret board. Not easy and the pattern is like patterns we do for chord formations and Arpeggio's only now thanks to you I just learned one on a Fret Board. Oh Happy Day..!
I'm a guitar player and just started on the bass just to understand, but love it My appreciation for bass players has increased, and let me inform those just starting NO bass is not easier than guitar Just playing for a few days and can already see an improvement in my sense of rhythm Thaks for your sharing your knowledge
Saw the video pop up because I am wanting to learn (finally) to play the bass. Subscribed because of the first couple minute "rant" about "scammers" portraying themselves as him. Honorable man and loved the information and lesson. The explanation is so clear to me because I learn best with patterns. Thank you so very much.
I am a guitar player who likes to add bass lines to looping, jumped on this for an into tutorial on bass lines because although i know my scales, i just don’t know what to play and they are always very basic in the root notes or maybe an octave. This lesson was amazing. Excellent instruction on connecting the fretboard. This would have helped on a six string years ago…thank you for this lesson! You have a new subscriber!
Fantastic approach to pentatonic scales and to bass playing. Travelling at the moment and can't practice but I'll get on to it ASAP. Thank you so much for giving me hope. I've been struggling for months to find a good teacher on the Internet and I think I finally have. I'll be back... Thanks again M. Brown, great work. Keep it up.
I just discovered your videos last week. Even though I'm 37 years old, I just started playing bass guitar a year ago. After I met a band. Till now Mostly self taught, but I jam with my band regularly, which I'm now a full time member off, I'm getting better but I have a long way to go. I really like your approach to this as opposed to some other you tube teachers.
Thank you so much, been playing for many years and always used normal power cord runs and hammer ons, and never learned notes just always played by ear and tablature when needed but this video really broke it down and helped me to understand notes and the chords I’m wanting to learn, now for countless hrs of practice to get fluent
Such a beautiful lesson! Though I am not a beginner, I watched to the end because I liked the way you linked major and minor and the way you resolve each scale is awesome harmony! Great lesson, thank you!
This is my first lesson from you and I think it was great. I just got my bass today. I haven't played in 52 years. I understood the lesson perfectly. I hope my hands can rise to the challenge.
Great lesson, and great information. The Pentatonic, when I was learning to play in the 80s, was always discounted as being “too simple”…remembering that this was the Dawn of the “Lead Bass” age, and the ability to shred and play frenetically was more important than foundational playing. Wether a pro or beginner, no matter what style (or styles) of music one plays, the pentatonic is the most useful scale in the bassist’s vocabulary.
Thank you Mr.Brown. I am a Japanese and not very good for English. But your English pronunciation is very clear so that I can understand very well what you say. Of course, your lesson is very efficient to understand essential pentatonic scale on bass.

but that was it , a lot of the teachings on youtube are thought starting on C root note
and easy to then to play the 1 4 5, but then when a song is in A
I'm lost, well I'm not as its just put your finger on the E string 5th fret play take it off play it open, but my god that can get so boring, yes it works but I guess it's a start to getting the feel of the bass and especially in front of a crowd I said what if there is actually a bass guitar player in the crowd watching me, so I put the bass back up on its stand and reverted back to my takamine and tele,

57yo trying to teach myself bass.So clear and concise, explained so well. Thanks Rich
I've been playing for years, but always struggle with the basics. This was very helpful thank you.
This guy is a great teacher. Thank you!
Man, you are so so much the best bass tutor on TH-cam. It’s like having you in my living room as my personal one-on-one tutor. PS: I make good coffee.

Much love
Hands down the BEST explanation for me the drummer learning bass that plays by ear!! Thank you Mr. Brown!!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge with us. Love the major to minor lessons.
Comfortable to watch and learn, thank you very much!
Keep it up.
This is the kind of things that hardly anyone explains or demonstrates and the reason for it. Thank you.
I’m getting my first bass tomorrow. So glad I found you. Very clear instructions 🙏🙏
Thank you so much for the lesson. I really appreciate you for taking the time to explain and teach the fundamental of playing the bass. Thank you
Thank you Mr.Brown. I am a Japanese and not very good for English. But your English pronunciation is very clear so that I can understand very well what you say. Of course, your lesson is very efficient to understand essential pentatonic scale on bass.
Your teaching skills are of the highest level, thanks a bunch !!! Simple is great
Thank you for simplify this scale! It makes so much more sense now.
I'm an instrument teacher and love what you're doing here. Thanks for this. I'll follow and pass on. Patty
Thank you so much!
Thanks so Much Rich. I've been playing for 3 months. And getting better each day.
