Good work as always. The accessibility of the pentatonic scale is a great way to "find" other scales and modes, tasting their flavors. Starting with the minor pentatonic, you can experiment with the tones that define Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian and Blues scales respectively by integrating but a single additional note. The same goes with the major flavored modes. So in truth, you are never leaving the comfort of the simple pentatonic shapes, you are just adding seasoning. Its a great way to expand the musical palette and start looking at "wrong" notes as more than just passing tones.
I want to say: I love your way of teaching. Calm, confident and clear. You’re born to do this I think. I’ve seen many teachers on TH-cam, but you’re making things easier, not more complex. It almost feels like a real life lesson. Will check more of you. Thanks!!!
Yes Rich! The 2nd mode of the minor pentatonic is the major, the 2nd visual shape of the min pentatonic is the major pentatonic. Then it’s just about running the shapes with a sequence, and you’re halfway there. Just throw in some ornamentations like bends and slides to make it more musical and expressive 👍👍👍👍 possibly on the flat 5th for minor, or min 3rd for the major! You know your stuff 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍👍👍
The flat 5.One of my favorite notes.I had to rely more on my ear to make sure I played all the notes in the sequences. An interesting informative lesson.Thank you.
🔥🙌🏾😎 Great vid. Practice summary: 1. Four note sequence climbing each note of the minor pentatonic scale 2. Four note sequence including the blue note (♭⁵) 3. Four note sequence including the blue note (♭⁵) but excluding the perfect fifth (♮⁵) 4. Major pentatonic with blue note (♭³) as a passing tone 5. Jam with it… major and minor Bonus: the blue note (eg E♭) is also a minor triad (E♭ G♭ B♭) giving the blue chord of C major (♭³ ♭⁵ ♭⁷) or A minor (♭⁵ 𝄫⁷/♮⁶ ♭⁹) …a passing chord (between chords ii & iii or IV & V) 🎶🙏🏿💫
Picked up my bass again after 25 year hiatus and Rich has been incredibly helpful to me. These lessons are so well explained and paced perfectly, clearly explained and demonstrated. I'm actually starting to understand how things fit together, moved way past my old plateau, and am enjoying the instrument so much more than I did in the past. Thank you, Rich!
I'm working through these pentatonic videos and they are a total joy. My playing is getting better and I'm able to 'see' the beautiful patterns unfold. Also your whole vibe is simply a pleasure to be around! Thanks Rich
Wow! This is like the missing link in hipness. Love how you toss away the idea of the blues scale and just think of it as adding the flat 5. Playing around with this for just a minute and I'm having a eureka moment. Well done as always sir. I feel like I should bump up my patreon contribution just for this first 2 minutes of this vid
Thank you very much. Je cherche ce type de video depuis très très longtemps. En plus le rythme de vos explications est super ( pas trop vite. Le temps d’assimiler.) fantastique
Thank you, this is brilliant. I’ve been trying to figure out how to actually incorporate these three together especially major pentatonic with blues scale.
Another great approach to what is seemingly 'common place' on the fretboard....it's amazing how you bring such fresh ideas to scales we play all the time! Thanks for another great insight.
Man....am I glad I found your channel I knew you were gonna say the flat 5! Haha. Love that sound. The "option" of the blues note makes it especially tasty when brought out in passing. Makes the listener go, whoa, that was a cool passage. What was that?
Rich I really thank you for this lesson. Pentatonics have so many vast differences in reference to shapes and intervals and it’s like you open my mind up to these things…
Outstanding lesson Rich your playing & delivery is great. Multiple ways of looking at 1 scale shape👍🏻 . And when you turn loose & improvise, awesome 🎸😁. Very smooth & tasteful

In addition to the clarity and freshness of your musical ideas, we also get these sweet jaw-dropping moments (like at 1:56 and 15:32). A most happy new year to you, sir!
Wow love your way! The names of the scales intimidated me so I had a learning block. But your translation & demeanor are comprehensible bc I play by ear. Thank You 🤙🏽
You never cease to amaze me with ideas I've never thought of! I get so many little tidbits of information from you that help me out tremendously! Playing the minor "blues" scale and leaving out the perfect 5th sounds so mean! I'm positive that I've done this before. However, I've never given this the weight that I should have! This fits perfectly into my playing! You're the man Rich!
I truly appreciate the kind words, Timothy. I try to keep things as simple as possible for myself. This approach to the pentatonic scale makes the most sense for my own playing. FYI, I take the same approach to melodic & harmonic minor scales. I still think natural minor or Dorian. I just know that the major 7th is there whenever I want. Welcome to 'Bass Playing for Dummies.' lol
Subscribed!!! You are such a calm, clear and gracious teacher. I have had amazing teachers (Patitucci, Ron Carter) and have been playing for more than half my life. I quit for a while but found my way back, and it has been your lessons that rank high (along with Janek) in helping me mentally return to the instrument I love so much and feel better about what I know and how I can grow. Thank you a million times over, Rich Brown. Be well and blessed - pacomahone (apeachmoon)
Thank you so much for this great lesson. Excellent delivery and structure with just the right amount of theory. I'm just starting out on my bass journey, although I play other instruments, and I'm look forward to spending a lot of time on your channel over the coming months and years.
Thank you Rich, I'm really enjoying learning through your Brown Stone channel. You are a great teacher. I am making progress from just playing the root notes and I feel like I am starting to get to grips with the fret board.
Fab sound Rich and great explanations! Could you say something also on 'thumb fatigue' caused by rpressing on the back of the neck? I am new to your channel; great work and good pace of presentation, thank you!
Thanks Rich for helping the bass community with your amazing videos. I personally want to ask to repeat (please) that master class you gave to the Scott Bass lesson on modes and how to mix them to have a option of target notes
Fantastic lesson Rich! Wow! I love your tone - had Many basses over the years. The tone and apparent flexibility of those strings look and sound amazing! What are they please? Make/gauges?? Blessings and thank you! 🙏🙏🙏
I absolutely love your playing Rich ! So glad to see and hear you step out into the brave internet world to shine a light on the inner workings of tha Bass ! All the best from Oakland, Kai
Brother Kai! You already know I've been a huge fan of yours for years. I'm honoured by your very kind words. Means a great deal coming from you, my brother. Thank you so much. All the best to you and yours from here in Toronto.

Very cool exercise! I appreciate these little bits of coolness that you throw out here for free. If I ever get back to making money again I will join. Five bucks is a steal. And btway, I love your Fbasses! George makes some of the best instruments ever. I hope to get a custom by him someday. I had 3 of them but they were stolen along with all of my gear a couple years ago. The AC-5 is the best fretless I’ve ever played. I at least want another one someday.
Thanks so much for his informative video. Love the fresh perspective on pentatonics. Also, what strings are you using on the FBass? I love that sound and would like to put them on my F as well…thanks much. 👍
Man I truly enjoy your teaching. By chance are you able to tell us what type of bass and amp setup you are using? Do you have other places to access teaching materials other than TH-cam?
Thank you so much, Fitz. The only other place would be Scott's Bass Lessons. I'm using an VF5 made by F Bass. For these videos I'm plugging into an interface and recording onto Logic Pro X.
No compliments from me this time, everything is written down below. Are you considering to go live? I believe it's worth trying! 1000 thx for the lesson and 1000 cheers!

I am a 6-string guitar player and this absolutely applies to us as well. This is a great lesson. I subscribed as well. Thank you!
Thanks Rich for making cool 😎 things happen. I'm finding the beauty in the scales that were at one time so tedious. Great job!

Awesome! Similar to Funkadelic’s “Who says a funk band can’t play rock”.
Rich I have played guitar a long time, but need help on bass and I really like your scale work, thanks for great instructions.🎸
Excellent lesson

Hi Rich I was just wondering are you using flat wound strings on your F bass? Love your channel ❤️
Thank you man😎
I call the major pentatonic with minor 3rd added "the BB King scale". I believe he used it extensively
Great lesson, thanks a lot! All the best for 2022! 😊

Could someone please recommend reasonably well-known songs using F# our Gb major pentatonic?
Hi Rich, do you teach one on one lessons on zoom? if so where can I find the details?
