I researched for hours how to learn modes. Never really understood how to play them. Watched this and learned the modes in under 15 minutes. Awesome job man! Thank you for this! Absolutely genius!
Sir, I played the bass for a long long time. I have tried to watch as many videos as I could for years about modes and how to memorize and use them in my improvisation. Nobody (atleast to me) explained modes and scales in a simple and clear way. This was a Eureka moment for me thank you!
Rich...older guy trying to learn all this mode and theory stuff. I've heard mode teaching before but seemed way too complicated or I just had a block to it. Best explanation of the modes I have heard in years. Thanks much for sharing!!
When I was completely new to the instrument modes were my way to learn the finger board. I had no idea what I was doing. Teachers were telling me not to learn modes yet as it is a more "advanced" part of theory. But looking back I am glad I learned modes early because I got the major scale positions/shapes, and 7 Scales all in one! Great value! You get to experiment with all those different sounds. I got more excited from that point on about learning guitar/bass. When I try to talk to my friends about modes they glaze over. It's kind of sad, because they're a really fun way to approach the instrument!
I have been a musician for 60 plus years and never heard modalism described in this fashion. Kudos my friend. You are an excellent teacher as well as musician!
Rich, my man, you just knocked it out of the park! Absolutely amazing!! It couldn't be made any simpler than this. You explained it in such a lucid way, it just gave me the confidence to dive right into it. Ciao for now. So long buddy...see you on the other side.
I learned the modes a while back from SBL and understanding it this way has made it so much easier to just play in general when you know where and what you can play and still be in key. Thanks for the great vids rich!
Yes, Sir. Had to watch it again. So much good stuff here. Most important is that the scale is the same, from the lowest note available on the fretboard to the highest. The idea of playing 4 notes per string up through the scale helps to understand this concept. you're still in the scale everywhere.
Well you did it!! You made it easy. Stupid easy. I learned it and have been avoiding the modes for years. I've really been getting by on the pentatonic scale, but the way you did this changed it (in my head) from learn the modes to learn the diatonic scales. Thank you so much, you just turned my bass playing into the next level.❤
I was only talking to someone today about how useful and enjoyable your Mastering the Modes course on SBL is. This feels like a great extension of that. Thanks again.
Hi, Rich! I’m primarily a bassist of 40 years but I also play guitar. However, the bassist in the band in which I am guitarist is my high school friend who started bass with me at school. He has never been able to learn scales…until yesterday! I told him to play along each string starting with the G string. Open, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12. Then I told him that was G major. Next the D string. Play EXACTLY THE SAME FRETS except instead of 11, play 10. Then I told him that was still G major, although technically D Mixolydian. He looked stunned lol. I continued down to the A string with A Dorian and finished with E minor. Changing just the one note necessary on each string. It worked! He now knows G major/E minor across his whole bass
You made this topic so approachable. The one thing I was unclear on is whether you keep the same scale shape as key snd just start the mode scale wherever in that scale shape the next level shows up, not simply moving the same shape up a level.
Hi Rich, Just wondered if there was a possibility you could complement your lessons with a PDF. Would certainly help me to take away and practice without having to sit in front of a screen and replay what you say before fully understanding it and mastering all the fingering.. anyway, thanks for the lessons. Cheers, Fred Jansohn
Mr. Brown said in one of his videos (sorry, forget which one) that he doesn't do PDFs on purpose... he believes you should learn these things by ear (except when he gives you numbers :-). He said it's totally worth it for you to write it down yourself, and then you'll have it, BUT to do that you have to... figure it out by ear! Which is, by the way, fantastic training. Notably: There are several bass bits that he plays starting about 10 minutes in which I totally want to *steal* I MEAN LEARN so that I can *sound like Rich* I MEAN INTEGRATE into my own playing 🙂
It’s been said by so many people already but really opened my eyes on how to work these. I’ve understood what modes were for years but never found good ways to really work them. Thanks a lot!
Good lesson, Rich. I've been working with modes for some time, but had sort of hit a wall; this lesson opened up the possibilities...and reminded me to 'unify' the concept of modes, rather than think of them as separate pieces of the puzzle. Great tip, thanks!
Well said. Agree. I've had a couple different bass teachers tell me to learn certain modes, but with no real clear explanation of how the modes fit together or how to really understand the whats or whys of them. This video helped put those pieces together quite easily...
Amazing lesson! This has really helped my get a deeper understanding of modes and how they relate to the parent key! One small confusion I have (and I hope I explain this in a way that makes sense) is an example that I found online where the modes were used in a progression that started with Am In the example, The guy was playing a progression using Am Dm F and G, in the video he used A Aeolian for Am which makes sense. He then suggested D Dorian for the Dm, F-Ionian for the F and I believe G-Mixolydian for the G. Now, in terms of the modes used based on their minor/major feel in relation to the chords it makes sense. What I'm confused about is what the parent scale would be in this situation and why those particular modes where chosen since, from my understanding based on this lesson it looks like it kind of goes against the ethos of picking a parent scale and then playing the modes in a descending order (C-Ionian, D-Dorian, E-Phrygian, etc) or am I just overcomplicating things?
It clicked with me quickly but took me a second to start actually playing around with it. Been playing bass for ten years but I usually play by ear - I've always wanted to learn some theory though! Thank you.
That was awesome I quit playing the bass in my mid twenties to focus on a competing career. Soon I’m retro just bought a new bass and this is an incredible refresher. A great explanation. Thanks for sharing
Well today its....Mr. Rich.... to you. Please do not stop talking about this topic.... If you recall we are creatures of habit. constant repetition is the rule.... Watching you play these "modes" makes it looks easy, but we as student need to see it like you, and that will take some time......cheers
I've been asking about modes. And it's hard to ask the question if you don't know the right words. And I've thought about playing a scale but starting on every different note of the scale, or as you said degree. I know how to read music and I know some music theory but I never got into modes in marching band. So thank you for confirming what I already thought but couldn't put the into words to ask people who knew more music theory than I do. Thank you.
I finally get it!! Watched this after watching your scales video and man, I’ve learned SO MUCH than I ever have! Thanks so much, man! You’re such a great teacher! I can’t thank you enough!
This just blew my mind and unlocked so much more of my understanding of the fretboard. Thank you so much for putting this content out for free. I can't wait to apply these principles when I play live!
LOVED the lesson. If you use something like Neck Diagrams to illustrate what you are trying to teach it would paint your picture to where it is even better understood.
Awesome lesson as always sir, love how you have made modes seem less scary. Will need to rewatch a few times to fully digest and understand but with your style of teaching I don’t think that will be to difficult. Again thank you for making great videos
I gotta say that learning this opened up so much to me. This was an amazing lesson, and it really helped me to understand all these different scales up and down the fretboard!!
Context is key! Rich man I cannot thank you enough for this. This is a great window into modes. Just getting back to the stuff after years away, super helpful! Thanks man!
I agree 100% that modes should be learned in the context of the same key. (From each degree & not off the same root note) This way you not only learn the modes but also how too play over each of the diatonic chords, (outlining the diatonic progressions) especially if you know all the intervals within the modes. e.g Targeting the 1,3,5 & 7.
Your modes course on the modes is one of the best out there! I keep it in an open tab on my tablet :-D The way you think about modes and how to use them just works for me. This is a great addendum to the SBL course.
Hey Sir, thank you so much for this video man . Seriously learned all the modes watching this video itself . And while practising the modes I just realised how some of the songs I used to listen up growing up used those certain scales . Like the Phrygian scale which resembles the structure of “rodeo” by lil nas x and crazy little thing called love . Thank you so much sir
Man your touch is supper smooth and efficient. Your fretting hand fingers barely moves away from the fretboard giving an extremely efficient motion that keeps your tone so smooth. You should teach a lesson on hand movement efficiency.
Mr. Brown, I definitely loved this video and your explanation if I might say that of the modes. It definitely, definitely cleared up about 4 or 5 years of boggled ideas of, and a fear of trying to learn the modes because of how much it seemed so difficult to learn. But sir u absolutely made my life on the modes a whole lot easier in a matter of 10 or 15 minutes. I will follow you as long as ur videos and teachings are available. Great lessons… these will definitely open up my solos and playing thanks a million..I play a 7 string Bass so this will really open me up to do more things on every scale
Bass Musicman...I bought a 7 string a few years back. No one knows how it gets tuned. Is the lower string tuned to F#? Or Low B? If F#...I'd there a tuner on the market that goes that low?
Yes! They don't have to be complicated. I struggled with these for so long, until I finally came up with something that made sense to me. Thank you, Berry.

jupp, old thread but absolutely agree. This guy is gold:)
I am one of those 20 people that have been waiting for this lesson!!!!
LOL! Thanks very much, Russel!
Me too! I have over the years memorized modes but truly never knew how to use them!❤❤
I agree with the others. I’ve been trying to get the modes for years. This lesson is the best. The whole fretboard just opens up! Awesome job.
Found your channel through Scott's Bass Lessons and now I'm subscribed....so far, you are the best teacher I've found and I don't say that lightly
