Don Don, this move by move breakdown you've done, imo is your finest piece of work! I've only been watching sumo for 5 yrs., and even though I watch every basho and videos on sumo, I still miss all that actually happens (the defensive vs offensive moves) most of the time - even in slow motion! This video has explained more to me than any other video or match I've seen! Props sumo brother! Great job! 💋
Yo!! Nevers clicked so fast on a vidéo! It was more than 20 years ago, when my father and I (as a child), were watching sumo! Thanks for those good old memories. Cheers!
Omg no way lol I was waiting for something like this 😊 Akebono is my favorite yokozuna of all time and the rivalry between akebono and takanohana got me watching sumo at an early age... Your videos are awesome keep up the good work 👍😀
Man it's great seeing compilation and breakdown of these fights! You can tell when they're staring each other down they're going to give it everything!
Awesome video. I could sense the effort you would have put to get the footages! I thoroughly enjoyed the video as usual. Looking forward to this series !!! 👍
New to Sumo and so happy I can watch Akebono in action. Always saw news about him during my childhood. Noticed he seemed to always use Tsuppari and Nodowa techniques!
Who knew that the people who bought tickets for Day 7 of the September 1989 tournament would witness the beginning of a legendary rivalry in sumo history
the fact they begin and grow in exact same time and their extraordinary skill is quite something . we can compare now with kotoshoho/kotonowaka with Hoshoryu nowadays, maybe : let's see ;)
You can tell that Akebono entered his human bulldozer period in those last 2 fights. It was fun until his knees gave out. I think I remember the final score between the two, cant wait for part 2 to see if Im right.
Keep up the great work.. I am in Alabama, but I am about to move to the Philippines were my wife is from, her cousin lives in Japan. I will watch sumo live.. thats my dream.. hoshoryu is my favorite. My name for him is" the future". I seen him doing his uncles belt slap on Chris sumo covering there tour.. just awesome.. your work is appreciated. Much thanks from Alabama, SGT. K. Takanohana and Akebono started began in sumo in 1988, they met in a Makushita match in September 1989 and from there on, they fought in a number of tournaments. I want to see the last part when Akebono and Takanohana were promoted as Yokozuna in 1993 and 1994, until their retirement in 1998 and 2001.
Akebono perfected that push so much that, to even have a chance of beating him, a rikishi had to get under and inside first. And that's just to get a chance, not come close to a win. Nobody had arms like Akebono.
In my opinion i think if they faced each other at their bests the first match would go to Akebono but then I think Hakuho is just too versatile and would win most matches after that, though he never had to face monsters like Akebono, Musashimaru or Konishiki so he would have a tough one adapting
In the chad rowan biography, it IS mentionned that they Indeed met first on May88 scoring 2-0 each and Akebono won their first encounter. Confirmed here, th-cam.com/video/Rx-nHf2Me4s/w-d-xo.html Great video nonetheless!!!
RIP to one of the all-time greats. RIP Akebono
How Taka’s neck survived all those matches is a testament to his greatness…

I 2nd this, fantastic work and happy you doing this rivalry!
Amen!
Big fat ditto. Thanks jen1174J .
Saved me some energy.
both these guys but especially Takanohana were so good so young. Amazing how skilled already at 19 and 22 respectively. Just wow.
Don Don is the man. Another great compilation.
As someone new to the sport thank you so much for these. Great to see the history behind some of the greats.
now, _that's_ a rivalry
great formatting
many thanks, don
Excellent work Don Don!
i truly love this series please continue to make them

Absolutely love these videos Don Don! The context you provide is so great. Hakkeyoi! 👏
one of the best rivalries ever, thanks DonDon !!
My all time favorite sumo rivalry! The whole reason I started watching sumo was Akebonos rise to Yokozuna in the early 90s.
When will there be a part 2? great content man.

Hell yeah, that’s highest level of sumo. Top-1 rivalry. Like without seeing.
Thanks! It's also craaaazy to see the 36th Kimura Shonosuke at Juryo level, wow!
That's amazing series, thank you! Can't wait to see more!
Lol funny seeing you here. I watch your videos all the time too.
@@lukecash3500 Great to hear that!

that's outstanding work, keep it going
I appreciate all the work you put in to this. I have rewatched your rivalry videos over and over.
So excellent! Your videos just keep getting better & better!
Love the format... planning on doing maybe Konishiki vs Chiyonofuji???
One of my favorite rivalries
Or Kirishima vs Konishiki?
As soon, as they moved up ranks, you could hear who was the crowd favourite. Great content!
I like how you made this video look and sound. The subject was also captivating. It made me want to know more. Good job.
This channel kicks ass

Where's part 2? 🤔
Thanks Don don for all ya work
Well edited , the audio was excellent.
Awesome videos, this brakdown + music is the best combo, subbed
the fact they begin and grow in exact same time and their extraordinary skill is quite something .

Great collection... 🔥🔥
Great video! Can't wait to see part 2
Where do you find footage of old tournaments? I'd love to watch replays of old tournaments sometimes
Amazing work! I just subscribed! 😁
Such a great video!

This is the first thing I remember about sumo these teo guys going at it.
we need 2 part plz)
That attitude at 11:40! And again at 12:30!
Please part 2 sir
great video
Hello! Is there part 2?
Where do you get these old matches from?? Thanks!
quite surprising for me the amount of defeat they both have in those different tournament considering their high of fight even when they were young.
Akebono perfected that push so much that, to even have a chance of beating him, a rikishi had to get under and inside first. And that's just to get a chance, not come close to a win. Nobody had arms like Akebono.
4:51 1 month before I was born.. 😅
That's crazy, I'm 31 now! 😂
Which one is correct? Takanohana or Takahanada?
Takanohana
He used Takahanada until he reached Ozeki, that's when he changed his name to Takanohana in honor of his father who was also an Ozeki (Takanohana I)
@@ColressDC Arigatou
Takanohana beast.
R. I. P. Akebono
A thing to be noted is that whenever they met they were having a losing record
I understand the historical significance of these two. Early days of broadcasting etc. but level of sumo is imcomparable to Hakusho vs. Asa era
I barely know sumo. I've watched one documentary and few clips. I know who Akebono is .lol. He was a big star..
I wonder who would win if Akebono & Raiden Tameemon fought
無理な体重増加で膝が駄目になっていったのか
Who is TakaHANADA? 🙋♂🤔
I often wonder if prime Hakuho could of beaten Akebono at his best.
In my opinion i think if they faced each other at their bests the first match would go to Akebono but then I think Hakuho is just too versatile and would win most matches after that, though he never had to face monsters like Akebono, Musashimaru or Konishiki so he would have a tough one adapting

Great video nonetheless!!!
Akebono is the most boring yokozuna to watch... From Russia with love.
how skinny Akebono was when I met him he was twice as fat
That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a multi colored mawashi 1:57 ??
Great work Don Don!
