Its a reminder of why weight classes are a joke, when seen in the context of boxing referees getting caught absolutely flush by punches quite often without the least distress, and when they get bumped into by the boxers, the boxers go flying across the ring like the emaciated insects they are.

Referees are definitely part of the excitement in the matches and the beauty of their outfits and the way they call the matches is an art and a skill as well. Imaoka is so bad at being a gyoji nowadays that he's worth his own compilation. He's always in the way ( happened twice to Shodai) and has a knack for falling off the dojo.

Some of those gyoji are just as tough as the rikishi! I was going to dress as a gyojii for last Halloween, but I decided not too because nobody would know or understand the costume.
I know wearing the straw slippers is a signifier of rank for the top gyoji but they're so loose they don't exactly make it easier to skip around quickly, especially since the refs wearing them are the most senior in age as well as rank...

Their age is against them, too. Senior Gyoji are not young men. I am always impressed how they manage to almost always stay out of the way of the fast and furious action.
I don't have any sides in sumo watching , but I do have a couple of favorite wrestlers that I like to root for. That being said unless you have ever been knocked out and have no conscious memory of that happening, you should not cheer for this man's demise as a referee. Goya in my humble opinion.
And look at that - no annoying screaming little man and the rikishi both know what to do and stop when the bout is over. It's almost as if they're surplus to requirements. Yes, I know, tradition, tradition, tradition.
I'll be honest I'm surprised more refs don't get injured given how small the area is, how big the guys are, and how bad the attire is for moving quickly, lol they wear straw sandals and wear fancy clothes that look like they'd get in the way a lot or be prone to slipping/tripping/stumbling. Then to boot the ring is made out of an uneven platform with the ropes being there I would trip daily trying to navigate that.
I will say that Imaoka does not know how to stay out of the way, it seems he is always stumbling out of the path of the wrestlers or getting knocked down

There's not even that much room for the ref to move around. If there was more room behind him he could have backed up and been fine.

Sumo is very traditional so things like that can be slow to change. They should adapt a safer arena while keeping it traditional.
