Incredible rivalry, and incredible work putting this together! Asashoryu was before I started watching sumo, so it's awesome to see him fight against Hakuho and see that he's as strong as everyone says he was!
Outstanding stuff. Props on finding and editing all of these bouts. I'm a big Hakuho fan but thanks to you and their fierce rivalry, I can now better appreciate Asashoryu. Thanks a lot.
I saw Asa on Day 14 in his last basho as an Ozeki ... wow ... then, I met him waiting for his limo at LAX on his way to Vegas for an exhibition ... what a nice guy ... pretty good English too! ... Really miss that guy ... Hak too!!!

Great work Don Don. These compilations of yours are THE BEST!!! The level of excitement here is almost more than this old gal can stand . . . . almost. 😌 thnx!
You may then understand why some sumo fans as myself felt sumo was not the same at all after the departure of Asahoryu and later on, after the retirement of Hakuho. When you have seen the best, everything else becomes common. No offense meant to the successors.
Awesome compilation of this incredible champs of Sumo. These matches stay fresh everytime. I watched this video multiple times, you made us watch this with the same intensity like in a yusho, loved it 👍🙏
12:56 the legendary last day championship bout!!! My gosh that was so intense and satisfying to watch as a sumo fan. Never seen such a fierce and intense bout in my life. Two Legends 🔥🔥🔥🐐🐐
Thank you Alot of dedication puttin this together 1:00-for all that was on the table, they left everything out there. Longest match i ever saw. Am a casual, have watched a few tournaments...this is a marathon match! The aftermath...clearly does Not Add Up. Meets the consensus criteria-even beating a 14-0 Yokozuna in the process
I love your channel! Thank you for your excellent 'technique breakdown' series-- those great replays and edits where you pause and supply commentary on screen with circles to highlight key moments worth focusing on in a sequence of techniques that either caused a victory or a loss (depending who you were rooting for, I guess 😎). Brilliant work, thanks so much for your time and sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm in such an engaging exciting way. Cheers! 👍💯💯
Great video as always. Your channel is one of the best on Sumo, revealing a deep knowledge. I just love Asashoryuu's "Well done!" smile after losing to Hakuhou in 2007 Haru basho, in the playoff match. You can see the respect grow between the two men each time they fight.
reminds me of one of those competitive friends who is a sore loser and upon defeat starts smiling as if all happy, going something like "what's that ridiculous bullshit, ofc it's easy to win with those retarded tactics, heh what a retard". OFc it could be either.
Awesome stuff. Love both of them and when Hakuho hit him with the Henka and fist pumepd right in his face and then later Asashoryu throws Hakuho out the ring and biig fist pumps him like daaamn that shit was fun and entertaining!
Two legends. Sumo really needs good rivalry again. I am waiting for the nephew hoshoryu to make the next step up to ozeki. The current Yokozuna bad knees I am worried he doesn't have a lot of time left.
It's a collision course between Asashoryu and Hakuho on Day 15 of the 2008 New Year's tourney in Tokyo. He tossed down his rival that he propelled him to yusho (championship) once again. But when it when back in 2007, he was promoted to Yokozuna by defeating Asashoryu again.
3:22 yeah I remember that. they simply robbed hakoho there. Then after a while kisenosato was in the same situation as hakuhos and jsa promoted him lol. That was hilarious 😅
One thing I realised, both men were using their non-dominant (Asa's right, Hakuho's left) hand adroitly. They used their lead hands for precision and the off-hands for power!
So you can tell beginning from the end of the last couple matches from the last video, of how hakuho just started getting stronger, and this video is stronger than the other guy because at the beginning the other small guy was overpowering hakuho.
Asashoryu is significantly on another level than Hakuho. Head to head, he has double the wins. All those wins, titles and records puts him in a class of his own. He was so dominant that the power ups banned him from competing. That was the only way to stop Asashoryu from winning.
He was so hyped because he was native- sumo was being reigned by foreigners-but deflated pretty fast. He was not memorable as a Yokozuna. Still he was good
yes I watched the documentary about their rivalry, and it was unique in the fact that they rose through the ranks together, fighting each other at the lower levels before reaching the top division. It was a true rivalry since the time they entered sumo until akebono’s retirement. If you haven’t watched it i highly recommend it Its called “takanohana vs akebono all matches greatest rivalry ever” On BEST OF SUMO youtube channel
As a small guy 5’-8” I never had a problem in street fighting wrestling against someone my size or slightly taller. I don’t understand why these wrestlers don’t get down lower. I ALWAYS win as a small guy shooting low and picking my opponent up off there feet and bending there backs backwards and drive them backwards at the same time and landing on top of them….like in how this fight ended. But in street fighting I sit upon there chest with my knees pinning there arms and use my fists and elbows to the head area. This is really hard to explain and harder for me to understand how these fighters are expected to win a fight. I need to learn more evidently 😄
Once you have one knee touch the ground, you lose in this sport. The Sport is immediate defeat once you land on the ground on anything but the soles of your feet, you also lose should you be pushed out the ring or knocked out by an Elbow, Palm Strike or headbutt. You always start with two hands touching the knuckles to the floor. Grabbing the belt is legal, grabbing anywhere below is instant defeat. Grabbing the hair is illegal.( Much like Greco -Roman Wrestling) Each Sumo-Tori weighs around 400-500lbs. There are no weight classes and if you got injured, you are forced to fight or lose your spot and drop 50 ranks down cause of how many are voting to take.over.the top positions in one tournament.( 1000+) These men train primarily in strength and explosiveness...meaning that knock out can come in as soon as you put the knuckles to the ground , You can also be pushed out the ring and off-balance.
This rivalry feels HUGE they are both AMAZING

12:48 Might be the best sumo match ever recorded.
Very cinematic as if it was staged
the pinnacle of sumo. no other rikishi can overwhelm asashoryu like hakuho did

man I liked this video before watching it. the rivalry was that good
in a sense, Asashoryu is really Hakuho's great teacher
Fabulous videos, fabulous wrestlers !
11:05 you should have found video of the opposite angle. That belt grip break was a thing of beauty and won him that bout.
0:55 seeing the words Hakuho and Ozeki next to each other feel so alien

Hoshoryu have big shoes to fill!
8:39 damn, look at this face)))
🤣🤣🤣 love Asa because he wasn’t robotic. That face was a mock toHakuho because he knew Hakuho was cheap for that henka in a championship bout.
Imagine being able to manhandle Hakuho like that.. 🤯

Imagine if Asashoryu was still there. People will compare them Light vs Darkness thing
What, are you telling me Hakuho didn't wear with the Yokozuna belt when he first come out of his mother's womb? IMPOSSIBLE! 😂😂
Modern day Mongol warriors.
Ok why am I watching videos about sumo and I’m interested in it?
So who has found their way here after watching Sanctuary on Netflix?
these 2 really entertained whole sumo fans and Japan

12:29 how did he get suspended?

Whenever anyone asks me about sumo rivals, I always refer them to THIS video series
Do the refs use cameras to check who touched the ground first when they fall at the same time?
yes
Whole 🌎should’ve watched their rival!
قتال رائع جدا ، وخاصة القتال ١٧ عشر ، كان الأجمل بينهم.
This is fantastic content for all sumo admirers. Thanks Don
FanDuel needs to pick up on Sumo
Why was Asashoryu suspended for two Tournament Days, 13 and 14?

why did he get suspended

lol you were just so wrong on so many different levels. Basic fact: Asashoryu’s record with Hakuho is 15:14 not double.
👍👍👍👍
WHAT A TITANS
Why did Asashoryu get suspened for 2 tournaments?
for playing football in mongolia and recorded it
Why Asashoryu got a suspension?
He violated his injury recovery period by playing football.
Charity not just for fun
12:56
Are there any Japanese sumo wrestlers?
There's Kisenosato
He was so hyped because he was native- sumo was being reigned by foreigners-but deflated pretty fast. He was not memorable as a Yokozuna. Still he was good
Imagine what would happen if Hakuho fought Raiden Tameemon
Asashoryu had the POWER but Hakuho had the TECHNIQUE....we'll probably never see this again and sorry to all the new fans :(=
i cant tell whos who in the ring
Any steroid scandal or something? 2 tournament suspension is pretty harsh no?
Don you know what you are doing very well.
what another pitiful henka for a yusho hakuho :/
#AlexisMason was here........
Asashoryu is the GOAT.
🦁 vs 🐅
Great clipps! But sadly, terrible music; those three beats in loop gets increasingly annoying 😢
Asashoryu (my favorite sumo wrestler) did not have enough endurance, if he doesn't finish the match in 20-30 seconds, he loses!
Hakuho's playoff henka was bullshit move though. And for the second time too
Ok. I’m only half way but this is not a rivalry yet.
Just 2 mongolian beasts dominating japanese traditional wrestling
Asashoryu best
