A very underrated performance by Haley - I think she killed it with her stage performance and subtle hand and body movements. Haley just freshens up any song she tackles and makes them interesting and new. A very sexy performance with great vocals - a feast for the eyes and ears!!!
She did deserve to win and the only reason why she didn't win was because American Idol permitted unlimited power-voting. Had American Idol not permitted power-voting, Haley would have easily won hands down because she was not only by far the most talented contestant on the show that season but she is also one of the most talented American Idol contestants ever. Meanwhile, the only reason why she never exploded after American Idol is because she has always deliberately held her career back by intentionally not signing with a record label and although all the biggest and the best record labels have repeatedly tried to sign her.
Go watch all of the other "Call Me" performances on American Idol and the Voice over the years, including the Catie Turner performance last Sunday, and none of those other performances come close to Haley's performance above. She was and is the absolute best American Idol ever.
++Tooth Pick I could only find Catie Turner, Chloe Kohansky and Jessica Meuse. I didna think much of the first two but Jessica's version was very good. However, it's not just quite as good as Haley. Still, I'll look up a few other things by Jessica because it was a very good rendition. It was kind of interesting comparing the judges' drooling over Catie Turner's mediocre performance and Haley's judges reactions after her absolutely superb rendition. Half-hearted praise from Steven Tyler, and crap from JLo and Randy Jackson. ADD: I've listened to Catie Turner again, and I think my initial judgment was harsh. She did do a very good version. However, Haley had such tremendous vitality, joie de vivre in her voice. On top of that she completely dominated that stage. She looked great, dressed great, and moved great as well as the great singing, and the climax to the song with the really high belt near the end. My god , she had to develop a tough skin. She knew she'd performed that song tremendously well, had enthusiastic applause. Then she turns ti the judges to get crap from them. Even Steven Tyler didna like to break ranks too much, and outright contradict the other two. Catie Turner sang the song at an earlier stage of the competition. I don't know whether that makes a difference but Katy Perry loved the song choice and was so tremendously excited by Catie's performance. If she thought that was so grea tshe would have been wetting herself at Haley's performance. What a difference between the two sets of judges.
Thanks to Randy, this is a very under rated performance, but as far as I was concerned it was a very excellent performance. Haley owned the stage and she sang it better than Blondie's original. She even hit a G#5 in the chorus.
++Space Cowboy++ You're right on both counts. The song suited her perfectly well and it showed off her belting rock voice very well. She also sounded far better than Debbie Harry whose version I've just listened to for comparison. In fact, Debbie Harry doesn't really sound like a Rock singer at all on that track.
Haley got hassled when she sang without growls and vocal gymnastics. I thought it was a great performance back then and I appreciate even more now. She also had a great stage presence, which in itself was beyond what others were doing and represented major growth on her part over the course of just a few shows. Energy, movement, vocals -- it's all there. It is amazing how so many viewers and "reviews" of the show were influenced by Randy's nonsense on this and several other songs she performed.
I can't understand why this performance got panned. She's got everything. Hot dress, awesome strut at 0:56, french at 1:08, and un-freakin-believable vocals at 1:46 and pretty much everywhere else.

However, almost any other performance of this song wouldn't look too great alongside Haley's brilliant take on it. Even Debbie Harry's version is shaded by Haley here. And it's not just the belting. There are the wee bluesy slides and turns of phrase that she fits in so easily, and you miss with other singers, and also that incredible energy and exuberance. Randy complained after Blue that it was sleepy and boring, and she was young and had all that energy. Well here it is, displayed brilliantly, and what does he say? "It wasn't a singer's song to show what you really have up there," and JLo was inclined to agree with Randy.

I believe she's a very gifted singer and one of the best singers I've ever heard, but I believe she didn't take the performance seriously. She's too busy playing a dumb blonde act (no pun intended) and running around the goddam stage to sing. There's a difference in having fun performing and acting a fool. It's almost like she knows she has it beat so she doesn't have to try to win anyone over (I have no clue who won this season, but I'm guessing she did).
+fatdudewh33lchair A very strange reaction. "Dumb blonde?" "Blonde bombshell" is more like most of us males see her. Actually she doesn't do a lot of running around. the stage. There are a lot of lights revolving around behind her making it seem as if she's gyrating all over the stage when in fact most of the time she's not moving around much at all. Cameras move round as well and views switch from one to another, also giving the impression of a lot of movement. I'm with you to some extent over singers charging all over the stage, dancing and prancing, but if you look carefully you'll see she's not actually doing very much of it. However, this was to a large extent a Pop show so some razzamatazz was expected, and contestants were given some coaching about stage movements. However, I cannot see any evidence of her singing suffering from her movements. From what I've seen and heard of her, I'm sure she'd be horrified to think that somebody thought she wasn't taking it seriously. Music is her life as well as livelihood. She had to fight all the way for every round she reached, often against judges'unjustified and unfair criticism. This song is a case in point. She gave a brilliant, exuberant and dynamic performance with her voice showing all sorts of tonal variations and also great range. There is another recording of this on YT which includes the judges' comments afterwards. When you hear their critique you'll see something of what she was up against, and she knew she was up against. She took it all seriously. make no mistake. (She actually only came 3rd, despite so many brilliant performances, some of which she was given little credit for. Even the media was asking questions about the judges because she was the only one being given a pretty consistently hard time by two of them.) I'm glad that you appreciate her voice. She's got me well and truly hooked, and I think she's a marvellous singer, and incredibly versatile, able to handle Pop, old style and so-called "Classic" Rock, big ballads, and Jazz, and makes them all her own. In her live gigs with small backing groups in small venues she doesn't prance about the stage at all. There are a lot of posts of her performing live although they are usually recorded by hand held cell phones and camcorders so the sound quality isn't great. Look her up singing with Postmodern Jukebox.
No, she didn't win. She finished third. She was by far the best contestant that season, but it was impossible for her to win. In fact, in the last 8 out of the last 9 seasons of American Idol, only young white males won the show, and in the one season when a female finally won the show, it was because the show had been rigged by the producers so only a female could win. In any event, Haley was by far the best contestant on the show that season and most people that watched the show that season consider her to be the true winner of that season.

However, it seemed as if Idol has pre-selected the winners judging from comparison of various critiques given out by the so-called judges. Brasstacks You need to listen again. She uses growl but she is definitely NOT doing it anything like all the time. She doe use it often for emphasis, not at all the same as what you said. This performance is full of vitality. High belts and Bluesy runs and those exuberant shouts she fits in somehow make this an outstanding performance that beats even Debbie Harry's.

Overall, on Call Me, Haley Reinhart is a lot better than Chloe Kohanski and I'm a big fan of Chloe and voted for her on the Voice. In fact, on American Idol, Call Me was one of Haley's lower-rated performances, and on the Voice, it was also ranked as one of Chloe's lower-rated performances as well. Nevertheless, in that performance, Haley was better because she sang the song in a much higher key and really showed what a powerful belter she is and what an amazing range she has. She was also very gorgeous dancing around in that dress. One thing I like about both of them, is they are both excellent performers. They are both female rockers, both have raspy voices, and both of them have very much sex appeal, but Haley is very different than Chloe in that Haley is a far more versatile singer relative to Chloe. As Haley can sing any and all genres of music well and Chloe is limited to rock and pop rock. Nevertheless, I like both of them very much, but for different reasons. Furthermore, listening to both of them talking about their careers, they are both very similar regarding the reasons why they do music and in what they want their fans and audiences to feel, experience, and get out of it. I'm thinking that they would probably end up being very good friends if they ever met each other.
I don't dislike Haley. Actual she has a better vocal range than Chloe. But Chloe is miles ahead in terms of stage presence and carisma. So overall I would pick Chloe, but then again they're not competing with each other :P
Well, the Voice is miles ahead of American Idol, as Chloe's performances were like Grammy worthy performances. Performers on American Idol, on the other hand, competed on a much smaller stage. Not to mention, that Haley was only 20 years old at the time and had never before performed on a big stage. So I don't know if it would have made any difference had Haley been on the Voice instead. Furthermore, Chloe is soon going to find out that she isn't going to be on a big stage anymore, as those big stage performances are going to be reserved now for awards shows primarily. Most of the time, now that the Voice is over, Chloe will be fronting a band on a much smaller stage instead while doing tours. Thus, in fronting a band, no way will Chloe have a better stage presence or more charisma than Haley. As the Haley fronting a band today is a much better performer than the Haley that appeared on American Idol. In addition, physically, Haley has matured into a much more beautiful female than she was on Idol and she also always keeps herself perfectly physically fit. The Haley of today is much hotter than the Haley on American Idol, and her performance skills today relative to the time she was on American Idol are off the charts. Maybe there's another Chloe who sings it better, but neither of the two Chloes I saw came anywhere close to this version by Haley Reinhart. Chloe Kohanski has an unusual alto voice, but it was a bit lifeless, and she hadna the range to get up to the high notes of the song. Chloe Jones tried to translate it into a Country song, fair enough, but she started throwing in lots of half-yodels, and hit some bum notes towards the end. It didna work. Haley, by contrast, treats it as a Rock number, and soars up on the high belts and puts in those crazy, bluesy shouts and runs, and always on pitch. No-one, not even Debbie Harry, sings it with such wonderful exuberance.

A very strange reaction. "Dumb blonde?" "Blonde bombshell" is more like most of us males see her. Actually she doesn't do a lot of running around. the stage. There are a lot of lights revolving around behind her making it seem as if she's gyrating all over the stage when in fact most of the time she's not moving around much at all. Cameras move round as well and views switch from one to another, also giving the impression of a lot of movement. I'm with you to some extent over singers charging all over the stage, dancing and prancing, but if you look carefully you'll see she's not actually doing very much of it. However, this was to a large extent a Pop show so some razzamatazz was expected, and contestants were given some coaching about stage movements.
However, I cannot see any evidence of her singing suffering from her movements. From what I've seen and heard of her, I'm sure she'd be horrified to think that somebody thought she wasn't taking it seriously. Music is her life as well as livelihood. She had to fight all the way for every round she reached, often against judges'unjustified and unfair criticism. This song is a case in point. She gave a brilliant, exuberant and dynamic performance with her voice showing all sorts of tonal variations and also great range. There is another recording of this on YT which includes the judges' comments afterwards. When you hear their critique you'll see something of what she was up against, and she knew she was up against. She took it all seriously. make no mistake. (She actually only came 3rd, despite so many brilliant performances, some of which she was given little credit for. Even the media was asking questions about the judges because she was the only one being given a pretty consistently hard time by two of them.)
I'm glad that you appreciate her voice. She's got me well and truly hooked, and I think she's a marvellous singer, and incredibly versatile, able to handle Pop, old style and so-called "Classic" Rock, big ballads, and Jazz, and makes them all her own.
In her live gigs with small backing groups in small venues she doesn't prance about the stage at all. There are a lot of posts of her performing live although they are usually recorded by hand held cell phones and camcorders so the sound quality isn't great. No, she didn't win. She finished third. She was by far the best contestant that season, but it was impossible for her to win. In fact, in the last 8 out of the last 9 seasons of American Idol, only young white males won the show, and in the one season when a female finally won the show, it was because the show had been rigged by the producers so only a female could win.
In any event, Haley was by far the best contestant on the show that season and most people that watched the show that season consider her to be the true winner of that season.

Contestants are encouraged to work the stage. In a song like this, Haley's movements were perfectly in keeping with the nature of the song, and her gloriously exuberant treatment of it. Furthermore, it didna seem to affect her singing at all. She didna do that with slow, intense numbers like House of the Rising Sun and I Who Nothing.
She finished 3rd. However, it seemed as if Idol has pre-selected the winners judging from comparison of various critiques given out by the so-called judges. The top two, quite good though they were, showed little of Haley's all-round brilliance

You need to listen again. She uses growl but she is definitely NOT doing it anything like all the time. She doe use it often for emphasis, not at all the same as what you said. This performance is full of vitality. High belts and Bluesy runs and those exuberant shouts she fits in somehow make this an outstanding performance that beats even Debbie Harry's.
You're an idiot. I've watched every performance of this cover both on American Idol and on the Voice and they all badly pail in comparison to this one. Meanwhile, if you don't like growling then you don't like music that makes people feel.

Not better than chloe
Overall, on Call Me, Haley Reinhart is a lot better than Chloe Kohanski and I'm a big fan of Chloe and voted for her on the Voice. In fact, on American Idol, Call Me was one of Haley's lower-rated performances, and on the Voice, it was also ranked as one of Chloe's lower-rated performances as well.
Nevertheless, in that performance, Haley was better because she sang the song in a much higher key and really showed what a powerful belter she is and what an amazing range she has. She was also very gorgeous dancing around in that dress. One thing I like about both of them, is they are both excellent performers.
They are both female rockers, both have raspy voices, and both of them have very much sex appeal, but Haley is very different than Chloe in that Haley is a far more versatile singer relative to Chloe. As Haley can sing any and all genres of music well and Chloe is limited to rock and pop rock. Nevertheless, I like both of them very much, but for different reasons.
Furthermore, listening to both of them talking about their careers, they are both very similar regarding the reasons why they do music and in what they want their fans and audiences to feel, experience, and get out of it. I'm thinking that they would probably end up being very good friends if they ever met each other.
I don't dislike Haley. Actual she has a better vocal range than Chloe. But Chloe is miles ahead in terms of stage presence and carisma. So overall I would pick Chloe, but then again they're not competing with each other :P
Well, the Voice is miles ahead of American Idol, as Chloe's performances were like Grammy worthy performances. Performers on American Idol, on the other hand, competed on a much smaller stage.
Not to mention, that Haley was only 20 years old at the time and had never before performed on a big stage. So I don't know if it would have made any difference had Haley been on the Voice instead.
Furthermore, Chloe is soon going to find out that she isn't going to be on a big stage anymore, as those big stage performances are going to be reserved now for awards shows primarily. Most of the time, now that the Voice is over, Chloe will be fronting a band on a much smaller stage instead while doing tours.
Thus, in fronting a band, no way will Chloe have a better stage presence or more charisma than Haley. As the Haley fronting a band today is a much better performer than the Haley that appeared on American Idol.
In addition, physically, Haley has matured into a much more beautiful female than she was on Idol and she also always keeps herself perfectly physically fit. The Haley of today is much hotter than the Haley on American Idol, and her performance skills today relative to the time she was on American Idol are off the charts.

I've listened to Chloe Kohanski and Chloe Jones. Maybe there's another Chloe who sings it better, but neither of the two Chloes I saw came anywhere close to this version by Haley Reinhart. Chloe Kohanski has an unusual alto voice, but it was a bit lifeless, and she hadna the range to get up to the high notes of the song. Chloe Jones tried to translate it into a Country song, fair enough, but she started throwing in lots of half-yodels, and hit some bum notes towards the end. It didna work.
Haley, by contrast, treats it as a Rock number, and soars up on the high belts and puts in those crazy, bluesy shouts and runs, and always on pitch. No-one, not even Debbie Harry, sings it with such wonderful exuberance.
