Andre Vaughn I was a huge Jessica fan that season but she almost ruined the song with her inflection at the end of the words fight and night. She's not Aretha nor should she try to be. The rest of the song was brilliant though.

Casey Abrams, jazz messenger, had taken Haley Reinhart's wandering eye and focused it straight at the pinnacle. Instead of two American Idol contestants standing next to each other, what we got to see was two artists collaborating in a most intimate way, as they dusted off a classic 53-year-old jazz standard and made it relevant to millions of people who had never heard it .before... Bravo!!!
Ohhh!!!!!! Haley and Casey, best duet ever in A.I. Those jazz scats from Haley and Casey were just spot on better than top notch horn players cause their voices are heart and soul!!!
More than 10 yrs later and I still cant get over this season. They could have gone with these 2 jazz singers for the finale and gave us the best finale in AI history. But they gave us a snoozefest finale with those 2 country teens.. Never watched AI ever again after this season..
The only reason why Haley didn't win American Idol people is because American Idol permitted "almost unlimited power-voting". Had American Idol permitted only "one vote per individual voting" instead and in which is the only way to host a fair and balanced talent competition, Haley have won in a land slide.
that was the zenith for Idol, what a year of crazy talent; Scotty, Lauren, Haley, i loved them all, but Casey stood out for me for sheer musical genius.

Honestly, they were just too talented for that show. They are both true artists. Making them sing covers of cheesy pop songs is like putting a bird in a cage.
I discovered jazz through this (and Amy Winehouse in parallel) and now I'm listening to the Jazz Composers Orchestra avant-garde abstract jazz and Cecil Taylor. Came a long way, thankful to these guys. I also left a comment here 10 years ago.

Casey and Haley were the best duo i have ever heard on AI, too bad they didn't win. but in some cases contestants who get vote off they became artists their way and didn't really need help from AI. just ask Jennifer Hudson who won the oscar for dreamgirls, Daughtry who hooked up with his band back home and became famous, and Adam Lambert he's better than that other guy anyday. and still they won either way.

this season had a ton of amount of talents and these two really shone the brightest. They brought jazz into the show, something a majority of Idol contestants couldn't bring to the table
So amazing. And how cool is that these two are still performing together? Many have speculated on their 'coupledom'. I know nothing about that but it is clear that they are kindred spirits musically, and I feel like Casey really helped Haley find her true self musically. They are both brilliant and I am so happy I watched that silly talent show when they were on.

During a lull, Ray Chew, who was then the music director of American Idol, began playing "Moanin'. Haley started singing along. He was like, "You know this song?" The Idol producers then approached and said they thought "Fever" was too racy for the show. Haley and Ray were like, oh, well, we have this...Oh, Casey!" Casey had played "Moanin'" on the melodica at his audition , but he didn't know the words to the song.
This is my favorite cover of this song. I almost couldn't breathe listening to it that season on idol. What a surprise! Originally, it was a hard bop instrumental - Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers 1958. The Mingus version lost the melody, so I can't listen to it = bebop. Guess I'm more of a hard bop / cool jazz fan. The lyrics were added later.

++Space Cowboy It's great watching it now, but wow, it must have been absolutely wonderful if you were following the show regularly every week and then all of a sudden this came out of nowhere and slugged you. My god, I bet you had a job believing you'd actually seen and heard this.

Thus, because of that the best that Haley could possibly do was third place, and it was triumphant that she got that far because first one judge, then later on two judges were trying to sabotage her. Scotty and Lauren finished one and two because they were two teenagers and the young adolescent voters were shipping them as two love birds too. Anyway, there wasn't anyone who could remotely hold a candle to Haley when she was on the show. She was by far the most talented contestant on the show and easily one of the top contestants all time in American Idol's fifteen seasons.
+Space Cowboy the same thing happened last season with Daniel Seavey. He didn't win, but he made it pretty far in the competition, taking a lot of amazing people's spots. The judges are no help either. That's why American Idol is coming to an end.

The thing with Haley is she has the pipes to sing anything and can adapt to whatever she is singing. The most amazing thing in my mind about this performance and all the other Jazz classics Haley has recorded is her timing because Jazz is all about the timing and of course her amazing ability to go up and down the scale...Can't seem to get enough of Haley!!!!
I think Haley studied jazz singing in college, so she actually has jazz singing background. Sure she started singing in her parents band, but those jazz technique and singing she perfected through study.

I don't care what they said. Still relieving this after 7 freaking years -- IMO one of the best and diverse batch of contestants there is that year, similar to season 11 (but I felt this season had more "likable" singers to me). Saving Casey at the F11 was worth it just to have had this performance (and Haley's moments with him), IMO.

I suppose the audience would have thought Casey capable of anything like that, but when Haley ripped it up like that - my god! I've been a fan of Casey since AI, i would scream every time he sang, with Haley I admired her and has a good voice but i was more focused on Pia Toscano, and when she got eliminated, and heard them sing together, it became my favorite moment of season 10 and i was a fan of Haley ever since.When i hear them sing separately they are good, but i love them better when they are singing together. Who Needs AI To Win, the show was already beyond their league.
Kay Bateman You made a wee mistake there, Kay. The show wasna beyond their league. They were beyond the show's league! The others in the show just werena inthe same league as Haley and Casey. James also gave some very good performances, and showed he could tackle more than just high octane belting Rock. However, this would have been out of even his league.
2019 I still come back to this, so good. This season I think was my favorite that I watched Haley, Casey, and James Durbin So good. I think maybe I watched one more season ...maybe....but I cant really remember what happened that season so...maybe not.
Back here in 2024 to relive this performance. This is the best duet I've ever seen.

I agree - this was a true duet. Not many on idol could do this. Another AI duet I love is Lee Dewyse and Crystal Bowersox, “falling slowly”.

Still relieving this after 7 freaking years -- IMO one of the best and diverse batch of contestants there is that year, similar to season 11 (but I felt this season had more "likable" singers to me). Saving Casey at the F11 was worth it just to have had this performance (and Haley's moments with him), IMO.

Great point about saving Casey being worth it just for this duet alone. This was a real once only, one-off moment. nothing like this ever happened on any other Idol show in all its history. I suppose the audience would have thought Casey capable of anything like that, but when Haley ripped it up like that - my god! That would have been a real eye-opener because no background information had been given out about Haley having been into Jazz previousky. All they knew was the chick could rock well. This was something none of the others did, or could do except perhaps Naima. I keep coming back to listen to this.

I've been a fan of Casey since AI, i would scream every time he sang, with Haley I admired her and has a good voice but i was more focused on Pia Toscano, and when she got eliminated, and heard them sing together, it became my favorite moment of season 10 and i was a fan of Haley ever since.When i hear them sing separately they are good, but i love them better when they are singing together. Who Needs AI To Win, the show was already beyond their league.

You made a wee mistake there, Kay. The show wasna beyond their league. They were beyond the show's league! The others in the show just werena inthe same league as Haley and Casey. James also gave some very good performances, and showed he could tackle more than just high octane belting Rock. However, this would have been out of even his league.
This was the single best thing that has happened on American Idol.

2019 I still come back to this, so good. This season I think was my favorite that I watched Haley, Casey, and James Durbin So good. I think maybe I watched one more season ...maybe....but I cant really remember what happened that season so...maybe not.
The way I see it Haley is the queen of blues and Casey is the King of jazz, and together they make one hell of a team.
