This is a clear breach of contract in English Law. The Licenser is simply a validation of the intangible deal, that the purchaser has actually bought the product. If Steinberg are dishonouring that deal unilaterally, they're laying themselves open to breach of contract.
Let's see if someone is going to follow-up on that.

The old antiquated licensing system was one of the reasons I moved to PreSonus, but I'm back with Steinberg now.

@@NathanielPrinceCoulter nah not really. It was pretty easy to upgrade and be on the new system. Did it with Cubase 12 when it came out and with the VSTi as I show in the video.

I think many people like the new system better but you can stay with the e-licensers if you really need to.

Yea, this was always a big turnoff for me as well with Cubase, and why I never considered upgrading. I got a free license for the Essential version of the software with one of the Yamaha Keyboards I purchased several years ago, but never found it to be user friendly, and the eLicensor thing just was one of the things I found very confusing in relation to Cubase to begin with. It seemed to me, that they actually made it more difficult then it should be, to even download the software in the first place, and eventually just started looking into other DAW's.
For instance, I have like 4 shortcuts on my computer that seemed to appear when I finally go thru the initial installation, that I still don't fully understand: eLicensor Control Center, Steinberg Download Assistant, Activation Manager, and Steinberg Library Manager! Big turnoff. Especially when you're new to DAW recording to begin with. With Ableton for example, you purchase the product, get the download link, install the software, and you have a fully functional DAW right on your Desktop in a matter of minutes! Cubase was way too frustrating for me. Even now, when I go to my Cubase account, I still wouldn't know how to upgrade the software, even if I wanted to too. It's confusing as hell! I have to say though, their customer service is pretty good. You can actually speak with a live person. (At least that's how it was several years ago). It it wasn't for that, I probably would even have the essential (or lite) version installed. Shame, because I do hear some people speak well of Cubase and all, but ya just about never hear how non-user friendly it is, especially in this regard. I really hope this is like the beginning to where they like, really get a handle on this issue. I'm sure they must have gotten complaints from others about it. Or, are at least aware of those complaints.

(Typical Reaper user logic. "Expensive" DAWs are bad and Reaper is good because you can steal it and no one will blink).

I moved to the new Steinberg licensing system quite a while ago, I was happy to be rid of the USB.
I have the Amped Elektra as well, I think we got it for free at some point connected with some promotion perhaps.
I know I didn't buy it on it's own, and I had it before i purchased Absolute 5.

Thx for bringing attention to this! However, using the vouchers for upgrading my soft e-licenser products did not behave like this. The voucher code I was given was not for use with the e-licenser control centre, but needed to be input in the Steinberg Download Assistant in the "Enter your Download Access code" field. This was not, from what I can see, stated on the Steinberg website, but it works ;).
Yes thanks for that addendum 😉. The way I show is as listed on the tech article about download vouchers, you just click the redeem button and follow along. However, if you expand the redeem section you do get a download access code as well that you can use in your download assistant. I guess it’s a second way to do it especially handy if you still need to download the new version of the software with Steinberg licensing.

For Cubase users specifically, if you are running Cubase 12 or 13 you are already on the new dongle free system. If you have Cubase 11 or earlier you will still need to have the USB dongle for it to work. So best to ensure your e-licenser keys are on the dongle and keep it safe! In general no real issues, but if you are trying to maintain an old computer with projects from 10 year+ ago and want to run those projects the e-licenser will be a requirement. The reality is a lot of legacy music gear, computers, operating systems are timing out and it is going to get more difficult to keep these systems going. Time to get those old projects backed up, multi-tracks converted to audio etc. Thanks for the video!

"multi-tracks converted to audio" is the best advice ever for backing up projects. It's a joy opening a 15 year old tune with 30 audio tracks that playback and just work. It's a nightmare opening a 15 year old project with 30 midi tracks and VSTs that no longer play.

These tech transitions are always a bit annoying but have to be done at some point.
What happens to Halion Symphonic Orchestra which is still on the elicenser? it doesnt run on Steinberg Licensing.

I have the old UR-44 USB audio interface that came with a "Basic FX Suite". That FX Suite uses the USB licensing system, and it does not show as upgraded to the new licensing system anywhere... I think I should get help with Steinberg to upgrade that software, I don't want to have that USB dongle in my PC.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but this whole licensing thing is a complete f'ing mess. As far as I can tell, there is no way to move my halion 6 or groove agent licenses off the usb licenser to whatever the call the licensing system that doesn't need the dongle. So I use the dongle, oops, left it downstairs on the basement studio computer. 250' walk to go get it. Rince and repeat. Basically you can't even use the stuff you bought. They should just refund your money. I've been a cubase user since v1 which had to be in the 80's, and paid for every stupid update since. Something really wrong with this company.

Idiot isn't the proper term, and as kindly as I can say it, sucker is a more adept word to use in this instance. These companies have suckered us into buying their software only to hit us with this insane "feature" that will cause the product to not work. This is unnecessary, especially since copy protection does not inhibit piracy. The only thing it does is harm the legitimate users, and of course provide support to a HUGE tax write off from the corrupt company employing said copy protection.
Hi. I got a question. I use OB-xd as a VST. I got three midi track and when my track go back to the beginning the sound change. Cubase doesn't keep the sound i choose. You know why. After choosing my sound is there a move i got to do to tell Cubase (this is the sound that i choose) Thanks.
Maybe try recording the correct sound/bank change at the beginning of you part. There's probably another sound selection recorded at the beginning of your part now.
What about the portico plugins are we gonna lose them ?

You can keep using the e-licenser for as long as it works. But when it breaks you cannot install the licenses onto a new one.
Some of my plugins don’t work on Cuba’s 12-13. BFD only works on 11 and I can’t get my waves plugins working on 12or 13. Can I still use 11 after that date?
Yes as long as your e-licenser keeps working.
Looks like halion 6 is my only issue. It doesn't support the new system. I would like to upgrade to 7 but have been waiting a long time for a sale. Did I miss it?
Haven’t heard anything about it. It could be that they offer upgrades at a discount just before terminating that service but you don’t know of course.
Absolute 5 is the same. I'm trying to wait for the sale as well before upgrading.

You can keep using it as long as your dongle works or check with Steinberg what can be done.

Hello sir, I have a studio setup. I have a bass cencelation problem in my listening position which is middle of my studio. But in other position the bass is good in listening. But I cannot move my listening position due to room shape. Is a good Subwoofer solve this problem? I want to conferm before buy and invest money. Plz answer.
That’s a question that only a good acoustician could answer. It’s probably better to try some sound treatment first.

Can you explain that cubase voucher again. I just bought 13 pro this weekend.
If you have Cubase 13 you do not need any vouchers. Cubase 13 only works with the new licensing system. The vouchers are for moving over older products to the new licensing system. Check your Steinberg account to see if you have any. There are also links in the description that you can check out to see even more details.

Good point, you'll have to check with them whether they can keep providing licenses on the e-licenser or provide a migration plan to a new licensing method as well.

It means that you have to have an internet connection all of the time .I got my first e licenser in 2006 when I purchased Cubase 4 via physical media. The email with the licence number will be enough. It should be.
No, once your system is activated you can go offline. And there are even ways to activate an offline system.
I’m afraid that it is not true that ALL Steinberg products are going to the new license system. I have Absolute 3 which include The Grand, Halion 6 , Symphonic Orchestra f.e., this package will not be going to the new system they answered me. Only if you ever bought those seperately. Enough said about the Steinberg service!
Yes they are not moving everything to the new licensing system. Only the products they keep supporting. So for those you’re stuck with e-licenses I guess. If they are on your machine I would move them now to a USB e-licenser though.

Even the music companies stopped putting DRM on their mp3 file, because it doesn't work. Statements like that only support this fallacy, even though it has been proven to be an ineffective method to fight piracy.

You will lose them after the service goes down. Hence the recommendations in the video.
Gone! The beauty of copy protection. This is why it is important to use software that doesn't inflict this sort of pain on the users.
There are no user advantages to copy protection. It doesn't do what the copy protection companies claim (force people to buy their software), and it only harms the legitimate users by erecting walls that render the products unusable. Imagine if your car had a mode where it would stop working because it could not connect to the net. Imagine this happening on your way to work, or the hospital. If you drive a BMW you already experience this with your seat heaters. It is a form of insanity.
None of this drama, hardship, or pain would be incurred by the users if they had access to non-copy protected software.

What does it mean? Move over to the free stuff that is just as good or pirate it.
To me it meant that I needed to upgrade the software that was still running with the e-licenser. In my case that was a free upgrade.
e-Licenser is so bad. One time cubase tells me that my license was mot good. So can't open it. But i got a recording session this week-end. I can't join them before the monday so i lost 1000$ because of e-Licenser.

This is an excellent reason to move to software that doesn't implement copy protection that harms the users. There's no reason that a legitimate customer should have to go through losing thousands of dollars just to support a corrupt system.
The Steinberg license fiasco is why I migrated to Cakewalk a few years ago. I tried to pay Steinberg but never got what I paid for. I wasted SO much time trying to get Cubase to work after I had paid for a license. It used to work for a couple of months and then refuse to launch. Great software but what a ripoff.
Unfortunate that you had such a bad experience with the e-licensing system. For many (including myself) it has worked flawlessly for years and now it is time for a change. And the new system has also worked as designed for me so far. So I just get to enjoy the great software without the issues you experienced.

Until it is not, and then you are screwed. And if you think this not the case look at how PACE (the makers of iLok), are pulling a Unity with JUCE.

Indeed time to support companies that don't intentionally inflect such pain on their customers.
I find this confusing, sorry, as confusing as the whole licensing system used by Steinberg. What does it mean by elicenser service shutting down? No more ELCC? No more soft licenses? No more usb licenses? I loathe the whole system used by Steinberg. It feels so ropey, so flaky, like it's held together with sticky tape and glue.
Sorry it wasn't clear to you, maybe the linked first article in the description will help. Basically the old licensing system supports two license containers (places to store your licenses which are checked by the programs that you purchased): 1. The USB e-licenser. 2. The soft e-licenser which you can think of as a 'file' on your computer but it only works on the computer that it is on. You cannot move/copy this 'file'.
Both of these old licensing containers will keep working after the e-licenser service goes down, but only as long as those license containers keep working. And that is probably not forever, as the USB e-licenser (#1) will break at some point and you will get rid of your computer (or it will) break which contains the soft e-licenser (#2).
The video talks about how to deal with that.
Of course it is confusing. Copy protection is not there to make your life better. It is a punishment that legitimate users must endure because of a corrupt position of an uncaring company. This is why it is best to support companies that do not subject their users to this sort of treatment.
This action by Steinberg doesn't make any sense, unless they want to force people into new versions of Cubase which will be licensed by paying every month, instead of a one time fee
I think it’s just about retiring old technology which always gets overloaded on release day and is a pain to keep supporting.
I recommend just pirating plugins that you've actually purchased. it's not technically illegal to do that, and it's also not unethical in any arguable way possible.

Not sure about the legality but frankly the copyright protections rarely cause me any issues in practice and I do like to be on the latest versions.
I really hate these convoluted security messes. Just like I hate the idea of companies charging crazy prices that exclude the majority of people from ever using their products legally. The prices should be acceptable for the majority not just trustfund trash and gentrification spreaders who ruined my favorite cities to make them tent city shitholes where the locals gotta live in tents while corporations import workers from abroad to work at their TAX FREE companies. Oh I could rant endlessly on this topic. They are connected. Same reason people gotta ask a clerk to unlock the shaving cream is the same reason we gotta stop the rave to call up some outsourced call center employee to unlock shit on our own devices. @@LanewoodStudios Copy protection is not a solution. It is a forced torture to be endured via what can be horrendous pain. It can be very expensive pain. It is a horrible thing to which a company would subject its users.
I agree. Thise who wish to skip payments can find "fixed" versions anyhow, so this is just annoying paying customers. These times will be, for some people, be known as the dark ages, as a lot of software from this era must be activated online. Fortunately, some have seen the light and use just-in-time (when downloading) compiled binary files (personalized) instead, making both the vendors and the paying clients happy.

Bullshit.. the old system was perfect. I do not update from 11 and 12. I use virtual machines on Proxmox servers means same time using up to 8 licenses… in my configuration it’s absolute trash…
I think for the majority it’s a vast improvement. For your very specific setup I would contact Steinberg.

Majority is not an argument. my setup and studio is on a boat. and collaboration based. For luck Steinberg is just my secondary DAW. Mainly i use a 135000 Euro Fairlight EVO with Windows 10. when i am 4000 km at home away from studio i kann still use the DAW and collaborate. Steinberg will not buy new hardware for shure... i am just a hobby user and did recognize that Steinbergs Cubase will run a lots of cracks... We did handover them Our findings. ... Their network possibilities are still 20 years old.

It’s convenient to use software in the cloud for ease of use. Just imagine that you’d have to wait until someone from Steinberg sends you a dongle on which they put your license

Well they have to upgrade some time. I guess that's always a bit of a pill to swallow.
Hopefully it maybe just convinces more people to pirate the software. I sincerely hope that this gets more crafty people to create keygens and other things to work around this hostile action by Steinberg. Why do these people think they have an inherent right to more money from users?
@@LanewoodStudios They might have to upgrade, but they do not have to implement copy protection. And you do not need to swallow this corruption.
@@PHDWhom Thankfully there are now numerous companies that do not inflict this sort of pain unto their customers. You can still be a legitimate user, support these kind of companies that actually care about the well being of their customers.
@@chokocat9064 definitely. I am a little conflicted, because I would prefer to be running free/oss, but sometimes that doesn't fit the bill. I pay for Logic Pro every month for the iPad, and it works well for me. Still considering moving to Linux full time on the old Macbook. Reaper is a less shitty solution that doesn't treat the end user like a criminal.
