Regarding the "cutesy" passport photos in the demo - in the final game, if you press a direction on the D-pad while getting your passport photo taken, Mario and Luigi will do a silly animation that will be snapped for their passport photo!
To add upon this, the animations do have multiple frames and which one ends up in the passport is determined by the frame that's being displayed when the camera flashes
another thing worth mentioning about the original death animations is that the conscious bro doesn't pick up the fallen one when dodging attacks, meaning getting knocked out wasn't as punishing in the demo. the mario bros reference is cute but the added sense of urgency in the final version was absolutely the way to go
"Cutesy" photoes are still a feature in the final game. Remember how, when you're getting photographed on the Koopa Kruiser, the photographer tells you " _don't press buttons on your P-Pad to hold a pose_ " ? Well, just disobey him. Be rebelious, press different D-Pad buttons - each bro has 4 different animations, one for each D-Pad direction. And whichever frame of whichever animation was playing when the photographer snaps the camera - that's the one you get for your passport. And later on, you're able to retake your photoes in Beanbean Kingdom town, this time with a nice looking nature background. And once again, Mario & Luigi can totally make silly faces while getting photograhped, and each D-Pad direction has its own animation. In fact, as you progress through the game, you can keep coming back to that photographer, and there will be new animations. So yeah, it's kind of a big feature of Superstar Saga. Not any kind of prototype difference at all there.
That's incredible! I like how they were initially thinking about using elements from the Mario Bros. arcade game. I noticed the KO/revive animations and the game over font looked like the ones from the arcade game!
i think the use of the elements is merely placeholders. Game developers, specifically programmers just use whats available until artists make the usual final sprites.
It's crazy that they made that nice-looking logo and then someone said "Ew. Needs to be blockier and with less outline. And a weird E- shaped & symbol.". The prototype looks way better. I'm glad they eventually went back to the Japanese logo's style for the remakes.

Those beta death and revival animations are amusing meta/4th wall breaks. They also die like in a Mario platformer which is a neat touch. Don’t a know if there is a single game that actually works like that. Shame we lost them but the final build makes sense as a gameplay design choice.
Interestingly, a lot of the mechanics used in the prototype which were removed from the final such as having mario or luigi stay in the field after they died, choosing what you want to upgrade after completing a battle, and a couple more things were implemented in their future release which was "mario and luigi bowser's inside story".
