My favorite non-single (album cut) song. Great reaction.

Thanks, Chase! 🛣 That interesting formatting is all due to her brother Richard's musical arrangement/production.

One of their best little-known songs, used as a B-side to "Yesterday Once More" I believe. Just beautiful, and the reaction was--as always--fantastic.

First time I have heard this song. Karen certainly had a recognisable and distinctive voice!

I love that you did this song. It has always been one of my favorite album tracks. In fact, that whole album is one of the best in pop history. FYI, "ode" rhymes with "road." It's not o-dee. Another point I want to make is that you often refer to "her" songs. It should be "their" songs because Richard Carpenter did all the arranging and producing, wrote many of their songs, and played piano and sang background vocals (even lead vocals on the odd song). So he deserves just as much credit.

Richard is the genius behind the arrangements. He is truly a musical genius.

This is one of my favorite Carpenter songs that wasn't played on the radio. Another great song is Let Me Be The One from the tan album.

I agree, those are my two favroite songs that weren't cut as singles.

Nice reaction, Chase. "Road Ode" (the word "ode" rhymes with "road") is something of a hidden gem. It was an album track from the 1972 LP, "A Song for You," and also the B-side to the 1973 single, "Yesterday Once More." But since it wasn't the A-side of a single, it wouldn't have gotten radio play back then. Even so, it remains a fan favorite. I recommend that you go back sometime and listen to the album. The closing selections on the album are played without a break, with crossfading between the songs. Leading into "Road Ode" is the song, "Crystal Lullaby," a Richard Carpenter-John Bettis composition reflecting on the innocence of youth, which contrasts with the plaintive depiction of life on the road for the weary musician of "Road Ode." Following "Road Ode," the final complete song on the album, is a brief reprise of the LP's title track, "A Song for You," providing an effective and wistful closing for the album. The Carpenters are often misjudged as being singles artists, known only for their hits. But their albums, particularly in the first half of the '70s, were well-conceived and expertly crafted. On top of that, their albums became best-sellers at home and abroad. In the U.K., for example, they rank in 7th place among top album artists of the 1970s. You would really enjoy a deep dive into their albums, and this LP is highly recommended.

Great reaction Chase, to a lesser known but awesome song. One of my top tier favorites. I know I recommended it at some point but was not alone. We all are happy you got to this one. Here’s another lesser known but awesome song. This one is a video and features a Karen drum solo. She played drums on the album track, also. This particular version has some of the best camera work showing Karen’s hands and facial features when she gets going. The song is “Mr. Guder” (pronounced goo-der) I already know it’s going to blow your mind. Written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. It’s about their boss at Disneyland when they (Richard & John) worked there for a short time, playing music.

It's not just her that is on stage. They are called "The Carpenters " because she is doing this with her brother Richard, and it's interesting how most of the times you say "wow" is when Richard joins her with a harmony.

It us unfortunately that this song cannot be heard as it appears on the album A Song For You. Road Ode is actually the middle section of a three part medley. It is preceeded by the track called Crystal Lullaby with the reprise for A Song For You closing out the medley as well as the ending of the album. These three songs are meant to be heard together as they merge into one another as the album closer. As of now, I have not found any audio of these three songs being player together in the same video on youtube😮!

John, I responded with a link to a video that plays the last three selections from the album, but my comment disappeared. Maybe links aren't allowed, or maybe TH-cam is just being glitchy. The TH-camr 54music2 uploaded the video as "Carpenters, The - A Song For You (1972) Part 4 (Full Album)."

The magic of Karen's voice is most evident in this track, she brings such an vibe of lost abandonment in her lead-in vocal to a song like no one else can. It is soothing. It is captivating. It's not just the purity of her voice, but also the purity of her heart and soul that reaches out to you. It's one thing to hear beauty and to see beauty, but when you are touched by beauty....its a feeling like no other, it is an experience that only Karen can bring to the table. No one can own your feeling to a song like Karen can. Her wistful expressions in simply interpreting words and verses that allows you to cross the lines between feeling sadness and wishful yearning. It's like Karen's voice can lead you to the ground zero of your emotions, and you just let it take you because the warmth of her voice gives you that safe space to breathe in. One can only imagine how many moments in music Karen could have given us if she hadn't passed so young. If its any consolation at least we have "Now" her last recorded vocal giving us closure. The lyrics are ironic and in such contrast to her life. In passing we can believe she has found peace & love. If you get a chance to react to "Now" I am sure everyone would enjoy it. Thanks for keeping Karen's contribution to music alive and well in your reactions!

You keep saying she. The way formats the song. I'm not sure format is the correct word, but it's not Karen, that's all Richard. Richard finds the songs; he comes up with how to best showcase Karen's voice. He chooses what instruments will be used and how. You give all the credit to Karen when it's Richard who is behind her voice; tailoring the sings for her, Richard is the master mind. I hope you will remember this the next time you do a Carpenters song

Why do you always ‘like’ every single comment in the comment section? It’s makes it meaningless. If you’re going to hit like for them all, you may as well not hit like for any at all! It’s also weird that You take the time to hit like on every single comment, but don’t write a any reply to any comment whatsoever
