Karen thought this song didn't suit her voice and refused to sing it at first. Once Richard Carpenter arranged it and recorded the instrumentals, he convinced Karen to stay in the booth after recording another song. Parts of the lyrics were written on napkins and bits of paper. KAREN KNOCKED THIS SONG OUT IN ONE TAKE!!!

Not enough credit EVER goes out to Richard. Karen had the voice but without Richard's talents for writing, finding songs, arranging, orchestration, keyboards and vocals ( he got "We've Only Just Begun" from a bank commercial! ) The Carpenters as we know and love them never would have existed!

And to think she didn't like the song and didn;t want to record it. Richard convinced her and the finished product is fantastic. Karen never sang this at any one of their concerts. Maybe it hit home too much. I think this is one of Karen's best masterpieces vocally. What a talent gone way too soon. We all miss her !

I recently watched a pitch analysis of Karen Carpenter's vocals, using a song recorded in the days before pitch correction and AutoTune, of course. Her ability to hit pitches precisely over and over again was truly phenomenal.

In addition to being a songwriter, Neil Sedaka was also a singer and pianist.
He had a number 1 hit singing "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" in 1962. Sedaka's second and third number 1 hits were "Laughter In The Rain" and "Bad Blood" in 1975.
Sedaka followed the success of "Laughter in the Rain" with a more politically motivated song, "The Immigrant", inspired by the songwriters' parents and by John Lennon, then facing immigration issues at the time. "The Immigrant" reached number 22 on the Hot 100 chart and topped the easy listening charts.
Sedaka released a remake of his upbeat 1962 hit "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" as a slow ballad, and the remake made it to number 8 on the Hot 100 chart and number 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1976.
Sedaka was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Neil Sedaka is an American song writer and singer/pianist. Starting in the late 1950's, Neil had a string of hits including Calander Girl and Breaking Up Is Hard To do which he himself covered in the mid 1970's after Elton John signed Neil to his record label, Rocket Records. Elton also sang backup on Neil's #1 hit called Bad Blood😮😊!

🌿As my sister was 5 years older than I , everything she listened to ( on her record player on repeat ) in the 1970's ...
When we were young ... I listened to ...
This Carpenter's album was one ...
I would say THIS song and ' goodbye to love ' are the two Carpenter's songs that are just overwhelming in sadness .
For the genre the quality and subject matter is unusual in my book .
This song fits my life pretty well come to think of it .🌿

Written by early 60s pop star Neil Sedaka. In the 70s he had a career revival benefited by Elton John. My fav from 60s is Breaking up is hard to do. Neil redid it as a ballad in the 60s a hit again. He has a show about 50/60s music on satellite radio (Sirius) in the USA. Great lyrics by Phil Cody Melody inspired by Chopin. Neil was classically trained.

Karens voice was so unique & sad to know her parents didn't really care about her, moreso their son Richard, who was an exceptional pianist (& singer), yet felt she shouldn't be in the limelight, just the two of them I think. Very heartbreaking. All I know is that I felt so sorry for her. Particularly when someone said to her she was FAT!! So that took off the anorexia. But she really was just an angel, & looking down at her family saying 'I did my best'.💔💔💔💔

This is seriously one of Karen's best performances, but Richard has said that Karen never liked the song. When asked why, he said she never really put it into words. There's an interview online where she talks about the trouble they had recording the song. It took two weeks, tweaking the vocals and the music, but in the end, they felt that there was still something missing. Karen made the comment, "It's very boring. We never got the right feel." There are several songs they recorded that Karen didn't like. "Superstar" was one of them. She said it took her a long time to appreciate the song. Another one was "Ordinary Fool." It's one of her "bluesiest" songs, but after recording the work lead, Karen simply didn't care to continue with it. The work lead was finally released on the "Voice of the Heart" album eight months after Karen's death.

He wrote and sang many incredible songs from the 1950’s onward. He’s 85 years old now and is STILL performing! He even has his own weekly dee-jay spot on Sirius XM (channel 72 or 73?) where he plays his and other “golden oldies” songs and reminisces about his experiences in the bygone music era and with many of the “greats” he personally knew. Neil Sedaka wrote this, Elton John had helped him make a come back after years of being ignored with no hits. He was part of the Brille Building songwriters along with Carole King and all of those. A tone time he was also singing and putting out hits...then the Beatles came along and took down many like him. Sedaka really proved himself a more than competent song writer totally able to write and even sing modern songs and hots. He was no dummy I If Carole could do it, he could do it. Sedaka was also a fine classical pianist, a sort of pre-Billy Joel and Elton John piano singer, but doing what was required of hm back in the day with simpler teenager music that sold millions...and the Carpenters respected him, they knew who he was. He had hits at the same they released this song of his. Bad Blood, Laughter in the Rain, etc...

Karen is #1on my top 10 female singers and as much as this song is gold, imo Sedaka's version is platinum! 💚🎶🎵

Enjoy your reactions. Congratulations on 3 years sober. About to hit 8 years myself next week. GOD is good. I noticed you haven't done any Black Crowes. Try "Remedy" or "Thorn in my Pride" God bless

Ce type n'est pas européen. Il réagit comme un homme américain à des chansons déchirantes... il ne ressent ni tristesse ni douleur comme la plupart des hommes européens. Les autres Européens pleurent ou ont les larmes aux yeux.

RIP Karen. One of my all-time favorites. In 1989 , they made a movie about her called "The Karen Carpenter Story", her brother was the Executive Producer. It's available on UTube, but I have a link for you... th-cam.com/video/XJYomJgS790/w-d-xo.html

Karen take this Sedaka song to crazy emotional heights. you should Neil's version. It's pretty damn good. one of these Carpenter songs where "the money is in the basement" [which the Carpenters often said and joked about]...which means Karen's low notes.

Just to note, Karen did not want to do. This song- she didn’t like the song - but she eventually agreed to do the song. Not aware if her opinion of the song ever changed

Great song (pronounced Se-dark-a). Unfortunately for myself, this song hits very close to home but i love it nonetheless and how couldn't you? The description of someone struggling to let go, and the difficulties they face moving on are brilliantly done and Karen is...well Karen is Karen.
