beautiful voice considered the finest female voice in the business , she had perfect pitch ! I remember when she first showed up on the music scene , I was about 14 , and every boy in my class had a crush on this lady ! despite the fact that she was 7 years older than most of us !

Truly one of Karen's all time best recording's ever! She actually never like the song and said so, yet she recorded it in just one take. Whe she finished, the entire studio fell silent for a full time minutes, they were all so blown away. True story! Love you Karen 😇 Rest in peace...

Karen was famous for recording in one take .She did that with Superstar and on Trying to Get the Feeling Again --if you listen carefully you can hear her turn the page on the sheet . Trying to Get the Feeling Again was lost and found by Richard and released 11 yrs after Karen died .Better than Solitaire in my opinion .

The legend is that Karen didn't like this song. She didn't think it suited her voice. Or perhaps it cut to close to her life at the time? She heard Richard's arrangement and agreed to come in and record a 'demo track' to Richard's arrangement. With lyrics written on a napkin, Karen began to sing and it was so perfect the 'demo track' became the official track used on the album. One Take Karen had struck again!

Yet this song shows off her voice better than almost as any other song they recorded (exception: Superstar).

I love the younger generations discovering her and genuinely appreciating and loving her angelic voice as most boomers have. What’s very crazy is some young people in her and my day didn’t think the Carpenters were “cool”! Can you imagine? Not cool? Her voice, Richard’s keyboard talent and his arrangements are beyond cool. They’re epic❤Thank you 🙏

I must say I am up that time, when the Carpenters around, the minute I heard them singing I was hooked, I was always wondering am I one of the few who loved this duo???? Now going into a few years listening to reactors and seeing comments and how older are appreciating them, and back in the days did not wanted to admit!
Hope she looks down and knows, how much more fans she has gained. RIP angel!

Karen's crystal clear contralto perfect pitch utopic voice is so marvelous and solid that don't even need any backing vocals to make a song sound better. She's a stand alone soloist. No one to touch her in her field.

Karen disliked this song intensely (for reasons she never discussed, but the Carpenters' rocky relationship with Neil Sedaka at the time might have been to blame) and so - out of respect for her brother, who'd chosen the song for the album Horizon - she agreed to sing it just once, and this was it. Interesting that it should end up being one of her greatest vocals.

'Haunting' was one of the many adjectives that could be used in front of the vocal work of Karen Carpenter. THANK YOU for bringing this masterpiece to your audience and a new generation of listeners. Karen could make you feel every word, in every lyric, in every song. No other female vocalist can compare. 'Angelic' or 'Heavenly' in 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft' a 7 minute odyssey from the Carpenters 'Passage' LP from 1977 when blockbuster films like Star Wars and Speilbergs' Close Encounters of the The Third Kind were the movie rage that year. No one could have imagined a 7 minute masterpiece from the Carpenters about aliens. "'PASSAGE" is my favorite Carpenters LP as it was their foray into a new realm of music for them and I wish it would have continued. It got panned back in the 70's but has stood the test of time and in some critic circles considered one of the best Progressive Pop Albums of its time. It Included my favorite uptempo Karens performances on "Sweet, Sweet, Smile" that charted on the country charts, jazz on the infused "Bwana She no Home" Vocals that will melt your heart on 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the rock opera 'Evita', One of the Carpenters best ballads with the lush ' I Just Fall in Love Again'. Calypso sounding 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' unique from start to finish. Even the Album art on "Passage" was progressive from the previous Carpenters Album covers. If you ever review an entire LP this would be it. 'Passage' is the Carpenters most polished piece of art and it shines. Collectively it's that 'WoW' moment, can't think of any other artists that went out on a limb as much as the Carpenters did with this piece of work, Richard Carpenters' vision is highly underrated. In retrospect, after this LP one could only imagine what could have been....If we wouldn't have lost Karen. R.I.P. in Heaven.

Don't worry about the remastered label when it comes to The Carpenters. Richard himself did the remastering and allot times he did it just to keep the tracks up to date with today's playback technology.
You're passion is beautiful! It's so refreshing to see someone who knows what amazing musical stuff was going on in the past.

Hi Chase, Karen Carpenter is my favorite female singer of all time and it's so good to watch you becoming familiar with all of her pitch perfect, classic recordings! I'm wondering if anyone has yet suggested that you react to a mind-blowing voice of the present, 15 year old Emma Kok, whose live performance with Andre Rieu's Orchestra two months ago already has 25 million views? The song is "Voila," and if you choose to react to it, be sure to select the 7-minute video because it has a brief, not to missed, incredible backstory about Emma at the beginning. You might want to keep a box of tissue handy, she's that good.

Karen just sang a great range in this song. She transitioned from a little high to her low octave which she called her basement voice. Great reaction to a great song from the one and only Karen Carpenter.

Chase, it is so satisfying to see and hear your reactions to Carpenters' songs
--- and Karen's incomparable voice! "Solitaire" is considered one of Karen's best, if
not the best, vocal performance ever. And it's my favorite Carpenters' song. It's
awesome to see younger and even younger generations discovering their music,
exemplified by Karen's amazing voice and Richard's incredible arrangements.

You said that she sounded different in this song. I think so too as this was from the Horizon album in 1975 and her voice, to me anyway, was at it's peak. Same tone and phrasing, but she seemed even more effortless from her lower register to the higher head voice.

It always gives me goosebumps when she hits those deep, low notes. You don't hear many female singers that can do that. Suppsoedly she was riding in the car with Olivia Newton-John (they were friends) and a song came on the radio and Karen was singing along. I guess it had high notes and Olivia said "I had no idea you could sing that high" and Karen said "Richard always says 'The money's in the basement'", referring to Karen's low notes and that those were what the fans loved and what really sold their records. She really has a 4 octave range.

Another nice job young man. Many seem to use the word "Haunting" when describing Karen's voice. I get it, her voice penetrates to your soul. But I prefer to use the word ANGELIC when describing this beautiful woman's voice. This song is a good example of her incredible, deep contralto three level octave range. Karen was one of a kind. Rest in Peace Karen. Forever Young.

There's so much that's been said and that I could say about Karen's voice. Haunting is very accurate. I've seen you've reacted to a few songs, but I don't know if you've listened to "make believe it's your first time" (for instance), their cover of "Desperado" (one of my favorite), "look to your dreams", "baby it's you"... the list could be just their/her whole discography.

Been enjoying your Carpenters reactions Chase! Here are 3 Carpenters videos I think you would REALLY enjoy:
-Carpenters- Your All American College Show - 1968 (1st TV appearance) They were called The Dick Carpenter Trio at the time (yes, Dick is Richard) & you get an 18 yr old Karen on drums/vocals & a 21 yr old "Dick" on piano...both w/ killer solos! (Make sure it's the one where Karen is wearing all white.)
-Carpenters -Bacharach/David Medley- on The Ed Sullivan Show, 1970. This is a show that was done outside Walter Reed Military Hospital for G.I.'s returning from Viet Nam. Here u get to see what true pro's they were just 2 yrs after the 1st video I gave you.
-Carpenters- Baby, It's You. Highly recommend doing the audio version w/ the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO 2018.) In this version, it starts w/ video of a current day Richard conducting the orchestra then goes into Karen & the band singing the song.
You're welcome!😊 Keep up the good work! (Not sure why it's printing a line thru the word/name Carpenters...just don't pay any attention to that....)

The 1975 HORIZON sessions they were using new recording equipment at A&M Records, so that might be why her voice sounded even better....another song from that album is HAPPY or AURORA/EVENTIDE....that you might listen to...or their version of the big band era I CAN DREAM CAN'T I....

I relish & remember listening to all these classics then when i saw a teen , 33 RPM LP's..was so saddened to know of very very early departure in ' 83...think she was only 27 or so then..

To answer your question as to why her voice sounds a bit different, it's a couple of factors. The studio had just upgraded their recording equipment when Karen and Richard were recording the "Horizon" album. Also, by this point (1975, I believe), Karen was already a year from the onset of anorexia nervosa. Add to this that Karen didn't really care for this song at all, yet it is considered one of, if not THE best vocal performances Karen ever put to a recording.
