Thank you so much I've been very reluctant, actually petrified of using my machine . Your instruction has given me the knowledge and guts to give it a go. I thank you so much for that! I bought a brother sq9050 second hand about a year ago because I always wanted to learn to sew, especially while making junk journals.( love the look) I'm going to try it now and thanks again for this video! Love and hugs, Beverly
Have a Brother and never could get that threader to work for me, thanks for the tutorial on the threader...sewing has always been apart of my life❤️love jj❤️
I would absolutely L❤VE some empty bobbins once you collect 'em PLEASE, and Thank You Jessica❣ Fabulous tutorial, great job!!! TYFS❣ Oh, and YES to seeing your vintage sewing machines!!
Great job! I'm in my seventies and sewing machines were highly prized when I was growing up. They were a necessity to keep a family going. My grandmother used a treadle machine and mom taught me on a Singer electric. Great memories. Love 'vintage' machines. Probably cuz I'm vintage.😉❤
I really like them too. My grandfather had one for horse tack repair.. it had this thing to run the thread through wax first. I think the more simple ones are better, less stuff on it to break and pretty to look at. Vintage is cool! :D
I would love to see your vintage sewing machines. I really enjoyed this video...my Mom would make our clothes on a vintage Treadle Singer Sewing Machine Table that she inherited from her mother. Now, I have that machine. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of sewing with us!
what a great video! I am older than you. I learned to sew from my grandmother and sewed for 4h projects. I too sewed my maternity dresses and my kids clothes. and when I first started watching people doing junk journals and saw the taping and gluing I wasnt interested and I dont remember, I think tsunami rose, saw her sewing paper and that's when i decided to give it a try. i rarely glue..only when i cant sew on a pocket without sewing over whatevers on the other side because i flubbed up and didnt plan ahead. I love sewing again and enjoy all of the stitches. so I am so glad you are encouraging others to try and not be intimidated.
Thank you for this tutorial, it’s a great reference. My Brothers is designated for crafts and I use my Pfaff for quilting. I made a couple sample tag cards with the different stitches and noted the stitch lengths and widths for a quicker reference for future sewing. This helps me to write notes as well for best uses (card stock, paper, fabrics and combos). TBH I only got the Brothers because it seemed to work so well for you and had no idea on the best use so this video is greatly appreciated. Mahalo Shana
I heard this on a Singer video when I got my new machine-hold the bobbin with the thread off to the side so that it looks like a P-a P for Perfect sewing. Isn’t that unforgettable!?! My Grandma Elsie taught me to sew ❤️
Hey girlfriend had me laughing at the toilet paper roll, absolutely have to have it on top. We are oldies but were goodies. My mum was the same she can sew anything. Me on the other hand could not sew until I started JJs. I just bought a machine with the stop/start button and taught myself. The only thing is my needle is a denim needle. Oh yes please love to see your old vintage sewing machines, craft room reveal and jewelry making. Thanks, Jessica for sharing
My sewing machine is over 30 years old. I was having tension issues and I had someone who knew how to adjust my machine. I found out that I can't use cheap thread. Dont thread the machine with the foot down. Put a piece of fabric under the foot with the needle down when you are not using it. The best tip is to put the bobbin thread clockwise in the bobbin case. I have really abused my sewing machine but they just don't make them like these nowadays. It is portable and super heavy... it's a Singer... of course❤❤❤
I am 41 and can say I picked up the skill just playing around. One of those primary skills people should learn. I learned the basics from my nana but the rest..I just winged it and it worked out ok. Except for fixing the tension. Holy shite I can't do it no matter how many youtube vids i watch. I am still kind of nervous sewing paper with my family heirloom machine... my mom told me not to but I doubt her LOL. I definitely learned a few things watching this. I was hoping you'd make a sewing video!
Great tutorial, Jess! Thanks for putting this out there - I also have a Brother machine, I would love to get a few empty bobbins - thank you! (Happy to pay for them)
Thank you for the tutorial. I pretty much showed myself after watching so many videos. But the kind of machine I have is the stitch happy by American Crafts which has alot of horrible reviews but honestly I have not had a problem learning on it. It was in my budget at that time and paid like $40 for it on clearance so I think it was a good investment. I'm hoping to get something nicer like you have in the future. So thank you so much for the link to it on Amazon.🤗🤗
To switch back and forth, you just stop the machine and leave the paper under the presser foot, then switch to zigzag (with the needle raised), and then just sew the zigzag however long you want, then stop again and switch back to straight stitch. It's sort of time consuming on my machine that I dont do it that often.
I've had to re-teach myself - I can vaguely recall my mum showing me how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and basics but at that age I wasn't interested enough to take much notice. When I was young, the mums were given patterns for our school summer dresses and were expected to buy the material and sew them for us. That's how old I am - can you imagine that happening now?? She was a good seamstress and I miss her. I think she would have been horrified to see me sewing with paper on my machine.
I sew quilt tops with my sewing machine. With proper maintenance, should I still be able to use my machine on fabric crafts or should I get a second machine just for paper crafting?
Thank you for the How to sew. Hint - always clean the fuzz from the Bobbin case periodically. Paper creates a lot of debris. Also, do not use the.needle you use for paper on fabric for clothes. Paper dulls a needle quickly. It would be okay for junk journal fabric sewing, but not clothing.
I learned to sew from my Mom many years ago, but I admit the one time I tried to sew on paper my needle promptly snapped in two ! Any tips on the best type needle to use ? Thanks !
Ah! Good question! Lol I also didnt talk about maintenance on your machine etc. A good all purpose needle is better than a heavy one for paper. Also, not a ball point one. You need a sharp needle of medium weight to pierce paper. Not sure why your needle broke, but if you turn the wheel manually, with nothing in the machine, you should be able to see if anything is catching or the needle is striking metal or something. It could have been bent also.
Thank you for this! So my mom, never sewed, never ironed. Never did anything like this so I’ve been trying to teach myself. This is greatly appreciated. You may answer my question in the video, I’m only about half thru the video but I have a newer singer machine (don’t know that it matters) but when I’ve been sewing lately the back of the paper the stitch is kinda looser than I want. I’m guessing this is a tension problem. I just am not sure if I go positive or negative? It’s on auto tension and then if I roll it left it starts at +1 +2 ect right goes -1 -2 ect. Any idea which way I should go? Or... is this a bobbin issue? I do my own bobbins so it could maybe be too lose?
Tes, you're right, it sounds like a tension issue. The auto tension setting doesnt understand paper. :) I think I answered your question in the video, if not, let me know. Xo

Thanks so much for this! As one of those people who never learned how to use a sewing machine, it was really useful.
Thank you as one of the clueless ones I appreciate it. The new machine I have has been sitting in the box since last year
Yes yes yes to the vintage machines tooo😁

Thank you for the tutorial on the machine. Love it! Learned a lot. Would love to see your vintage machines.
Very helpful video Jess and I appreciate you taking time out to explain everything. Hugs

Some people use straight stitch and then continue with zigzag the back to straight ...how is that done? Thanks great video ❤️

Oh I always think my mom would be horrified but my dad would be laughing and shaking his head!💕
I sew quilt tops with my sewing machine. With proper maintenance, should I still be able to use my machine on fabric crafts or should I get a second machine just for paper crafting?
I dont think so. The only issue could be the needle dulling, and you might need to adjust your tension when quilting. I increase my tension for paper.
Thanks Peggy! I totally skipped over maintenance. Lol and needles!!
