Dear BP they dont call him Steve "The Voice" Perry for nothing brother his voice was out of this earth. And you need to do the live version of this when the sung it for the first time at a concert
No auto tune here, ever. Steve hits them same notes every time. Actually sounds better in most live performances. Keep going down this rabbit hole. We will be here for it. ✌❤🤘
to get a full appreciation of Steve "The Voice" Perry, you need to check out his LIVE tracks from 1981 Houston "Escape Tour". Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin Stone In Love Who's Crying Now Mother, Father All of these will have you slackjawed. No digital enhancements- no autotune, no multiple takes. Just pure professional excellence. Many bands nowadays worry about studio music, but back then to be successful, you had to be able to do your stuff and live because that was your bread and butter - if you didn't sound good live, you didn't make it.
Agreed ! I was actually at that concert! I wasn't even a big fan at the time, but a friend wound up with an extra ticket, so I bought it. It was one of the best concerts I've ever attended.
Journey’s live performances are better than the studio versions. Dont Stop Believin’; Who’s Crying Now- both from the Houston ‘81 show are phenomenal. That show was promoting the Escape album .
Journey is even better live. Listen to this song live. Mother, Father on the Houston '81' live album is amazing. Yes, Journey created the power ballad. Listen to the Captured live album.
The singer, Steve Perry, left the band in the late 80’s. Rejoined them for a couple years in the mid-90’s. He also enjoyed some success on his own. Journey was everything early to mid 80’s. The band still tours without him, but for many it is not the same without Steve Perry. His voice is legendary!
Steve "The Voice" Perry is the lead singer. He is still involved in music, singing duet or background with other artists. This past fall when Billboard magazine put out a fan poll to vote for their favorite lead singer of all time. Steve Perry won the fan poll with 68% of the total votes. His vocals are amazing, and singing techniques is off the charts. Journey has a huge catalog of hit songs. You could do a Journey marathon of reactions to their songs. Their live shows are the best way to see Steve Perry and Journey rock the house. Their Houston 1981 concert is simply the best. Steve Perry singing Mother, Father at this Houston 1981 show is one of the best vocal performances in Rock history. You need to react to that one. Steve shows how powerful his voice is, every time he sings a song. Steve when he sings his voice never quivers, and he never misses a note. Even when he has been running all over the stage during the whole show. More Journey reactions please. Steve Perry also has some solo music you should react to as well.
I believe the best Live video you could find for Journey is the Live Houston concert where they specifically played a tune called "Mother Father". Has the greatest vocals you'll find anywhere...bar none....
I'll add to people saying 'Open Arms' live and 'Mother Father' live. And throw in 'Sweet and Simple'. Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain wrote this song inspired by Ross Vallory's and Neal Schon's respective divorces. Basically, the idea was something like, "what if you broke up with someone, but you didn't hate them for it and understood why, and were still in love with them?" This was a stressful time for the entire band and the Frontiers album has a few angsty songs on it. Steve Smith's drumming has jazz roots, and he'll switch around grips to suit the song. For albums Infinity, Evolution, and Departure have Greg Rollie on keys and are very late 70s sounding and are what I call complete package albums (one track flows into the next). They're all really good, personally it would be between Infinity ('Wheel In the Sky' and 'Lights') or Evolution (Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' 'Sweet and Simple'), but Departure has 'Anyway You Want It' . Escape and Frontiers are the first where Cain came onboard and are very early 80s and get a bit experimental and they stretch what they can do. Escape's 'Open Arms' is the song some argue is the first power ballad and 'Still They Ride' has really interesting chords and 'Stone In Love' is joyous "Dead Or Alive' is this insane story song and looks exhausting live. Frontiers continues in the same sort of experimenting vein with rock heavy songs like 'Chain Reaction' and 'Back Talk' to something more dreamy like 'After the Fall' to moody like 'Troubled Child' or futuristic like 'Frontiers'. Raised On Radio (I like 'Be Good To Yourself' and 'I'll Be Alright Without You') and Trial By Fire('When You Love a Woman' amazing) have some great songs, but there's some drama, RoR especially can be divisive.
Steve Perry started singing with Journey in 1978. The Infinity album is a masterpiece. 1979 Evolution album came out another spectacular album. 1980 Departure came out…1981 was Escape album that went to number 1 and cadipoltded them to superstardom status. 1983 Frontiers album came out then in 1986 Raised on Radio came out then a long hiatus happened (Steve Perry did a couple of solo albums) and the very last album with Steve Perry was Trial by Fire 1996. They were magical together. Journey On.
Steve Perry can't be matched at the vocals when he sang he sang. My fav song is Wheel in the sky it always has been a banger but you still need to react to Open Arms also with you're wife loved the reaction.❤❤❤❤
Suzanne is their most underrated song, but stone in love is really catchy song always gets stuck in my head. Anyway you want it was my jam for ages when I first got into journey
The best vocal performance by Steve Perry is, Mother, Father. It's anm extremely emotional song about the broken home of Neil Schon, the lead guitarist. The lead solo, the guitar is incredible, I mean it is crying to the listener, and Steve's vocals just kill it. By far the best performance they ever did, because it was so personal.Killer track.
Styx has been credited with the first true power ballad. The song was "Lady" and it was released in 1973. According to some Dennis DeYoung is the "father of the power ballad."
The drummer is holding the sticks in what is called the traditional grip, which is the original way that drum sticks are held. Most jazz drummer hold the sticks using this method. Most rock drummers today use what is called a matched grip where both sticks are held the same way.
Great reaction! When you said, "His voice is up there with the greatest of all time." I thought to myself "Just wait until you hear him live!" Now that you've heard a few studio songs, you absolutely have to hear him live! As, I'm sure, others have recommended, "Mother, Father - Live in Houston 1981 - Escape Tour" If you think his voice is "Bananas" now, just wait until you see that performance or any live performance! I read somewhere that when he did that performance of "Mother, Father" in 1981, it was voted as the greatest live male vocal performance by any singer, ever! That's how good he is!!! They don't call him "The Voice" for nothing. Definitely recommend! You've gained a new subscriber!!! Can't wait for the next video and to see you dive deeper into the delightful rabbit hole that is Journey!!!
Love your reactions! Journey is timeless. You should check out the live in Houston concert they did for MTV. Mother Father and Who’s crying should be your next from that live show. You won’t be disappointed. Steve Perry’s voice is out of this world.❤
Thank you for reviewing this Journey Classic. Steve Perry remixed this song with Bryce Miller for Season 4 of Stranger Things and its phenomenal. And yes, Journey gets credit for inventing and performing the power ballad with Open Arms,
Seeing Steve perry with journey twice and twice solo was AMAZING. still they ride, mother father, sweet and simple, only the young, why can't this night go on forever..
Bored with Journey? Never!!! They are my favorite band when Steve Perry was in the band. You must hear Stone In Love and Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'!!! Please watch them!
Still they Ride concert in 1983 Japan. Great live performance of that song. Concert screens so everyone can see and the concert sounds set ups , and yes, power ballads. If they didn’t invent it they certainly made it popular. Every album is different 1978-1997 albums
Steve joined Dolly on her rock album doing Open Arms. It’s a duet that has me in tears. Dolly’s story telling style has you so emotional before Steve joins. The song is more mature now, it changed to two old lovers together again. Steve’s voice has beautifully aged and I love their voices together. It was a beautiful surprise.
🧡Steve is an amazing vocalist, and Journey (with him) is in my top 5 most listened to bands still. For another great rock vocalist check out Triumph - say "Lay it on the Line" Live at the US Festival 1983.
I was also born in Germany thanks to my dad being stationed there. He put 21 years into the Army, rather than Air Force, but couldn't keep from commenting on how similar our backgrounds are in that respect. Growing up, I was introduced to music before the invention of cassette tapes. We had a record player and my mom was a HUGE Journey fan, she owned every record they ever put out and I recall getting their newest album for one of my earlier birthdays because they were the first band I ever saw in concert (at 8 years old). You'll be hard pressed to find a Journey song you don't like. 'Oh Sherry' really showcases Steve's vocals since he starts singing before the music even kicks in, but 'Who's Crying Now?' will always be my absolute favorite song by them forever. Love your channel and reactions and I enjoy your commentary because it's relevant to the video, it's not like you're just talking for no reason.
Steve Perry is the greatest vocalist of all time! No one can vocally do the things with their voice Steve can. Listen to Mother Father Live from Houston 81, Listen to Still they ride, Listen to Why can’t this night go on Forever, something to hide, Wheel in the sky, Lovin Touchin Squeezin, oh my gosh the entire Journey with Steve Perry catalog
This song is from their Escape album that was in 81, excellent album with the new keyboard player- Johnathan Cain. The three previous albums (Infinity, Departure & Evolution) were also fantastic with a more 70s rock sound. All their song were great during these years.
Saw Journey live in 1986. Best concert ever. Steve Perry's vocals , second to none. One of THEE greatest Rock bands of all-time! Thank you for getting out of your own Genre and checking them out. Check out Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'
BP you gotta hear Steve “Tge Voice” Perry live. Mother Father live from Houston as an example. No auto tune no overbub, just incredible vocals and musicianship. Later live videos include Randy Jackson on bass. All albums are fantastic.
This is MY goat for vocalists. Listened ad a kid because of an older sister. Sang in a tribute band for a couple years around the country. The counter tenor voice is hard to beat. If I'd only been born 10 years earlier 😂
Steve Perry is simply AMAZING!!! While he was in Journey and when he went on his own too. His VOICE is just beyond words, intense & beautiful 🥰❤ Miss him, wish he'd record again. Thx for playing it, also if u get a chance listen to "Lights" its also one of my favs ❤ BTW, love all your conversations & shares.
This was one of my favorite songs back in the 80s when I was in my twenties. I was deeply into New Wave, had New Wave bands and dressed like a New Romantic (look it up!), and I was NOT into mainstream pop/rock....but I Loved this song! Still do!
Greatest singer, greatest band. Still my favorite after all these years. Check out the band Survivor. They kind of sound like Journey and they did movie soundtracks.
Steve Perry and Journey were not happy about the MTV era in 1983 when they had to 'act' for the cameras in music videos ... Perry recalled the band was p+++ed when they did the music video for 'Separate ways'... They felt like the music was being lost and the image was taking over the industry... Still, this 1983 album 'Frontiers' was another multi-platinum hit thanks to the MTV exposure.
Thank you for this reaction. Please react to Journey’s “Mother Father” live from Houston 1981. It was MTV’s very first live concert! You’re gonna love it! I just know! ❤😂
End of the’70’s too! That’s when Infinity was released. I used to sing to those songs when I cleaned my house and also when I was home after work. Great memories.
Steve Perry has started doing some interviewing I’m gonna say in the last six months that I’ve been aware of and it’s so interesting to see him completely white-headed but he still has got that smooth voice. He doesn’t tour anymore to the best of my knowledge, but to hear him discussing Journey just intrigues me! Journey, along with The Eagles was one of my bands in the 80s!
The grip the drummer is using is called traditional grip. It was mainly used at the beginning of marching drumming due to the angle of the drum. Also a lot of jazz drummers used to use it. Most rock drummers you see today use what's called matched grip.
Journey was a huge part of my youth. Seen them in 83 with perry and 2 times with new lead singer. They have so much music to listen to. You really need to listen to their catalog his solo 80s stuff is great his latest album in 2018 i had to hear. Missed his voice.
LOVE these reactions, BP! Please do a full on Journey journey!! Oh, this song brings back so many memories! They have so many amazing hits, you'll love it! Greatest Hits album is the way to go. Always in my rotation:) ❤
this song wakes up so much memories. It came out in . . . 83 ? . . . I was 17 y.o. and my first vinyl had been ABBA best of . . . . but this one really changed my life. From the first moment on I knew THIS IS SPECIAL. It touches heart and soul, it gives you good vibes and till the day I f***** die I will love it STEVE PERRY FOREVER ! ! !
I LOVE this song - It is on my Top 5 fav list - Loved this song when it first came out!!! Steve Perry is an iconic GOAT!!!! He ROCKS!!!! He is sometimes referred to has The Voice!!!! This is the song of my life!! all 3 marriages -
Steve Perrys voice was amazing... But honestly I never cared about journey until they got their new lead singer. I just love the journey behind his way to top of rock from a karaoke bar in the philipines! -The bandmembers saw him on youtube and was so impressed by his covers of classic lovesongs that they sent word for him to have him come and audition for as their new lead singer. -And suddently they had a whole new army of phillipineese fans! Awesome story! p.s. The new guy sounds exactly as perry.... but can also sound like almost every other rock singer you can mention! Crazy talent!
😊❤ Another great one that might not be on most people's lists. "Stone in Love" watch the live performance. He gives a little back story before he starts singing. 😅😊❤❤
Journey, started the Power Ballad, then every hair band recorded the power Journey's guitarist Neal Schon wanted to always rock hard. When Open Arms was played live before an audience the crowd went wild. Thats when Neal realized that song kicked ass. Steve Perry, lead singer is a counter tenor Altino and you've go to hear his falsetto like in Wheel in The Sky. Keyboardist/piano Jonathan Cain, together with Steve Perry and guitarist Neal schon wrote all the iconic Journey songs. Go down the Journey rabbit hole! Youll be ao amazed.
You are my daughter’s age! You will love classic rock music! Journey, foreigner, Boston, Fleetwood Mac, ZZ Top, Van Halen, Eagles, Bob Seger, just to name a few! Enjoy exploring!
Dear BP they dont call him Steve "The Voice" Perry for nothing brother his voice was out of this earth. And you need to do the live version of this when the sung it for the first time at a concert
Agreed. That concert was awesome!
This! Steve Perry is it!
Also agree. Was so awsome to see them live. Incredible
Also agree. Was so awsome to see them live. Incredible
No auto tune here, ever. Steve hits them same notes every time. Actually sounds better in most live performances. Keep going down this rabbit hole. We will be here for it. ✌❤🤘
He had perfect pitch😊
He’s the absolute best
Amen!
Love Steve Perry
If Journey didn't create the power ballad, then they perfected it. Check out "Open Arms", probably their biggest hit.
Perfection🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I think "Faithfully" is probably their biggest power ballad.
I think "Faithfully" is probably their biggest power ballad.
exactly what i was gonna say lol
In what world is that their biggest hit?? It's a fantastic song, but to say anything other than Don't Stop Believin is their biggest hit is insane lol
Steve Perry's voice is just amazing ❤
Could have done without the cheesy video. It's almost as bad as Oh Sherry.
@@stoveboltlvr3798 it was the 80s all the videos were cheesy 🤣🤣
he's the best that was, is and ever will be !
nothing can stand up to this
If you can believe it...he sounded better live in concert! He’s hands down the best vocalist of all time!
to get a full appreciation of Steve "The Voice" Perry, you need to check out his LIVE tracks from 1981 Houston "Escape Tour".
Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin
Stone In Love
Who's Crying Now
Mother, Father
All of these will have you slackjawed. No digital enhancements- no autotune, no multiple takes. Just pure professional excellence.
Many bands nowadays worry about studio music, but back then to be successful, you had to be able to do your stuff and live because that was your bread and butter - if you didn't sound good live, you didn't make it.
ALL BANGERS IN MY BOOK!!
Agreed ! I was actually at that concert! I wasn't even a big fan at the time, but a friend wound up with an extra ticket, so I bought it. It was one of the best concerts I've ever attended.
It's a wonder I have a voice or feet left singing and dancing to them! Cleaned a mean house with their music blasting! 😂
Journey - Open Arms.... trust me BP
Journey’s live performances are better than the studio versions.
Dont Stop Believin’;
Who’s Crying Now- both from the Houston ‘81 show are phenomenal. That show was promoting the Escape album .
He should react to the entire Houston '81 concert. Definently worth the watch and listen.
Also mother father, it's awesome
Lovin'Touchin' Squeazin'. Great song! Escape album, marvelous!
Steve Perry and Ann Wilson (Heart) are my two favorite vocalists of the 80's.
same but i have a couple more to add lol
Steve is “The Voice”. Listen to the 81 concert where he sings Mother Father. Soooooo good. Great reaction!
I concur . Saw them in '81 . Steve Perry was like a mythical creature live in the flesh then.
Hands down my favorite song by Journey
Steve Smith is a jazz drummer. He uses the traditional jazz grip most of the time, but he will sometimes switch to rock grip depending on the song.
Steve "the Beast" Smith is an incredible drummer. 🎶
@@gram5751 he absolutely is, but I prefer Deen Castronovo on the kit with Journey. Steve is better in a jazz/fusion setting.
Neil Peart also switched back and forth frome traditional to matched grip.
@@leemiracle6840yeah, I think Rush even had a hiatus for awhile while Neil adapted to traditional grip.
Open Arms was the beginning of the power ballads. He is amazing!!
"Open Arms" is one of their biggest hits. "Stone in Love" and "Lights" are some of my favorite Journey songs ever!
Journey is even better live. Listen to this song live. Mother, Father on the Houston '81' live album is amazing. Yes, Journey created the power ballad. Listen to the Captured live album.
For real they were✨✨🥰🌹🔥🌹✨
The drummer doesn't get the recognition her deserves. He's one of the best
Sure is…Smitty’s terrific.
He played on many other songs with many other famous artists. He was a session musician after journey.
Steve Perry is known as The Voice. What range! Amazing!
Journey never goes out of style! They’re just that good!
It was used in stranger things. 16 albums most recently in 2022. This one was in 83.
Also should check out Styx
Steve Perry's voice is iconic !
Check out their later one "When you love a Woman". Perry's voice still as clear as a bell. No one ever sang like he SAAANNGG!
Yes!

I believe the best Live video you could find for Journey is the Live Houston concert where they specifically played a tune called "Mother Father". Has the greatest vocals you'll find anywhere...bar none....
Hands down!! 💯 🔥👏🥰
Wheel in the Sky live version is fantastic. Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin is another great one. Journey ARE Legends. Thanks for reacting to them. 🔥🔥🔥

ONE OF THE BEST GROUPS. I LOVE TO HEAR STEVE PERRY SING.
Journey and foreigner both Rocked and perfected the power ballad.
Another powerful voice example would be "Mother Father". Live from Houston concert.

Thx for playing it, also if u get a chance listen to "Lights" its also one of my favs ❤ BTW, love all your conversations & shares.
Now this is Journey, Steve Perry (lead singer) Neal Schon (guitar). Steve Smith (drummer), Ross V.(bass guitar)
Mother/Father live 1981 Houston concert you’ll be absolutely BLOWN AWAY!
This was one of my favorite songs back in the 80s when I was in my twenties. I was deeply into New Wave, had New Wave bands and dressed like a New Romantic (look it up!), and I was NOT into mainstream pop/rock....but I Loved this song! Still do!
Journey is the BEST!
Even Steve Perry's part in the "We Are The World" video was awesome!
"I'm almost a million percent sure..." that line is hilarious. Love ya!
Thank you for this reaction. Please react to Journey’s “Mother Father” live from Houston 1981. It was MTV’s very first live concert! You’re gonna love it! I just know! ❤😂
Journey Shaped the 80’s.
After seeing journey several times with Steve Perry he is actually better live then recordings imo! He is THE VOICE
Yes. Journey power love ballad
Check out "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'."
Love "Girl Can't Help It" and "I'll Be Alright Without You ".
this song wakes up so much memories. It came out in . . . 83 ? . . . I was 17 y.o. and my first vinyl had been ABBA best of . . . . but this one really changed my life.
From the first moment on I knew THIS IS SPECIAL. It touches heart and soul, it gives you good vibes and till the day I f***** die I will love it
STEVE PERRY FOREVER ! ! !
Still They Ride and Open Arms. Power ballad extraordinaire. Mind blowing vocals by Steve
Yes they did start the power ballad. They are the best. Drummer it was his style. Gotta love the 80s.
This is such an amazing song. I'm so glad they put it in Stranger Things to revive it for the younger generations.
Steve Perry is on my top 3 all time vocalist list.
I’m here for Journey all day, but I’m also hoping BP digs into the rest of the ‘80’s rock ballads. That’s my sht. 40!
Journey, started the Power Ballad, then every hair band recorded the power Journey's
guitarist Neal Schon wanted to always rock hard.
